I AINHOA RUIZ DE MORALES AYUDARTE, INTERIOR DESIGNER AND JOURNALIST

1. Do you use the stone when you

create an atmosphere?

Yes, of course. The stone is an ele-

ment that you think could use to start

a project. The possibilities with this

material are very interesting.

2. In your opinion, the marble

from Macael is a known material?

Without doubt is a reference in the

world of stone. I think very few people not know the material. But it hap-

pens, the only thing that you can do is close your eyes and imagine the

Court of the Lion (Alhambra). More than 100 columns and recently the

new pavement with marble from Macael and for this reason it is impossi-

ble not know the material.

3. As Interior Designer, do you think that schools and universities

have enough knowledges about materials from Macael?

We usually study all types of materials: stone, wood, metal, glass, cera-

mics, polymers .. We learn their properties, behaviors in different situa-

tions and external alterations, durability, viability ... But it is also true that

during the student days we are absolutely bombarded by new materials,

Interior Designer and Journalist

Page 11: Digital Magazine AEMA (23)

11

But after that, we use the materials of last generation with designs spec-

tacular and the stone is an example of that.

4. What do you propose to improve the approach to the new gene-

ration of interior designers, decorators, designers ..?

I propose to organize master class, workshops or seminars in which the

product is displayed to the students and everything to do with it.

In my opinion an interior designer should be in constant training. Compa-

nies devote their time to train and we eventually respond with projects.

As a professional I follow "pulling contacts" of companies that came on a

day to introduce its product in depth and put at my disposal other tools

that I have.

5. Would you use Macael stone for the interior of a house? Why?

Without doubt. Nowadays, the possibilities are infinite (countertops,

bath, kitchen, decorative elements and so on. With creativity we can de-

sign the best space for our project.

6. All that you can imagine, imagine in stone. The possibilities are

infinite. Do you agree with this affirmation?

In my opinion, the possibilities are infinite, but all the materials have a li-

mitations. The stone is extremely durable and undeniable quality. But not

fit in all areas imaginable. The warmth, for example, is not a quality in my

opinion.

Page 12: Digital Magazine AEMA (23)

12

7. For stone, which kind of finishes do you like?

The bush hammered finished I like it. In general, I like textures which give

naturalness and nobility to the material and I don´t use polished.

8. About textures, what is the tendency nowadays?

I think the trend is precisely in finding that naturally. The world of interior

design has been overloaded in all its aspects and there are a small obses-

sion to recover the simplicity of the spaces and elements and also includes

textures. When we do a project in stone, we have to be able to see the

person wants to touch it and then feel emotions that is a good design.

9. What qualities should have the stone to be chosen by an interior

designer for a project?

It should have aesthetic and structure, the rest is play with pieces and

combine.

10. In which project do you will use the product of Macael?

The living of a hotel. For me is strange to imagine without stone.

11. Could you tell the best quality for you about the product of Ma-

cael?

Beauty, quality and exclusivity.

The use of the Stone in the Architecture

The architecture is at the same time a

structural art, practice and visual. Without

solidity is dangerous, without utility is a

sculpture to large scale and without beauty

is merely a utilitarian construction.

Solidity, utility and beauty, three terms

that every architect tries to join to complete

their creation.

The first adjective is the starting of the

use of stone in the architecture, give

strength, stiffness, durability and long life to

our projects because for me the best thing is

to have the client happy with the work.

The purpose is to study the delicate process of getting to obtain it for your ultimate

enjoyment. This primordial material has been used throughout history by different civili-

zations, due to its excellent mechanical properties and sufficient availability throughout

the entire planet

The purpose of this article is, therefore, claim that the stone historic status deser-

ves to know their behavior and characteristics and, finally, raising the possibility of

using it today in the lining for both indoor and outdoor, as well as use of structural

form.

From the Roman aqueducts and Egyptian pyramids to, through the countless cat-

hedrals and medieval bridges and strengths and Arab walls, the stone has earned a pla-

ce in the evolution of the history of building and structures, many of which of them still

they remain today.

José García Lamarca

Architect

Page 20: Digital Magazine AEMA (23)

20

The stone is very much on our planet and from the beginning of time, for their du-

rability, has been fundamental to the human being who has used it and identified with

it.

What amazes me of this element of nature is its large structural capacity to use it

in various works of antiquity, which still remain and are a landmark of grandeur, beauty

and majesty. Therefore, I will mention two great works, as example and from my point

of view, have made a before and an after, giving value to the stone.

The first example is the Pantheon which represents the greatest achievement of

the Roman architecture. Combines the scale, daring and mastery of all the architectural

arts. A large room covered with a dome (still largely intact), mostly made of stone was

one of the first buildings in which the use of space and lighting sophisticated figured

prominently. This, along with the dome, the oculus and niches, make the building an

important predecessor of the Pantheon.

Passing through the portico of 26 meters high, the visitors came to the giant door

measuring about 6 meters wide and 12 meters high, supported by 16 huge columns

made in stone age. Upon entering it was

and still today - one of the most important interior spaces that the world of architecture

can offer. On a cylindrical base 43 meters hemispheric dome, which reaches 43 meters

above the pavement rises. But its full effect also depends on other factors, lighting,

space beautification, articulation and decoration.

A similar and more advanced, reminds us of this dome of the Duomo of Florence.

It is built with an octagonal inner and outer shell of brick and stone. The two shells di-

minish in thickness and ending in an octagonal oculus holding and is covered by a de-

corative lantern. The shells are reinforced and connected vertically by a large rib stone

in each of the corners of the octagon, visible on the outside, and two ribs of smaller

stone within each of the eight sides. As the twenty shells nerves diminish as they as-

cend. The horizontal reinforcements, consisting partially visible tension chains of stone

and iron and wood and encircle the vault containing the tensile forces within the dome.

Page 21: Digital Magazine AEMA (23)

21

But all this would not be possible without understanding the process involved in

making the stone to get to obtain work as finished product.

Thus, another way of looking at the stone, aside from the large buildings, it is one,

closest to the person who truly understands more delicate look, the artisan and the sto-

nemason. If we walk through the countryside and observe with some curiosity, we see

that in the folds of the terrain, the rock formations or on the surfaces of the stones are

formed figures, like clouds are often shaped like animals or human faces.

The stone itself carries a hard process to get development and oversight in its true

essence and elegance to the works. It begins with the extraction of it as a work of high

precision. Small blasts are made with the grain, and you have to calculate very well to

block out whole. This work is thanks to the quarrymen, which delimit the blocks by ver-

tical and horizontal holes must match. The skill of the quarryman is remarkable, often

make two holes next to each other to hit more easily, although they do almost always

the first. They try hard, because they appreciate the valuable marble, and the white

marble of Macael is the only extracted in this way, being a very exclusive material, very

strong, non-porous, the favorite of the great sculptors.

After the extraction in marble quarry, the material pass to the factory for processing. In

the factories, everyone has to wear ear muffs or plugs as a security measure. Before

everything was done by hand but now it is another world. There are factories where

they cut, polish and leave the marble ready for use, with all kinds of machines.

In the vast craft the most surprising at first, considering the type of work done on

them is the sense of order and neatness; everyone focused on her work, everything

working without apparent problems. Very well organized. That feeling that some ma-

chines are working alone when watching the looms they are huge block cutters or the

numerical controls. We know that the workers are responsible and control the machine

but it seems that they are alive.

It is a very hard, very precise and delicate work, everything is calculated to the mi-

llimeter.

Page 22: Digital Magazine AEMA (23)

The marble has served to immortalize emperors, kings and characters of all kinds,

new professions are appearing now, which adapt to modern reality like my job no-

wadays centre is management and design production, mediating between the designer

and the realization, helping the production of objects, furniture and sculptures allowing

sketches into reality and optimizing production.

Within the classical professions too, great changes have taken place in our time.

Architects have a different relationship with the stone. It no longer serves as structure

of buildings but as decoration. With their expressive qualities the stone brings an ele-

ment of enhancement and beauty to modern constructions.

22

The binding line is something that goes unnoticed down factories but that is as im-

portant as anything else, because, in my view, are those who have the hardest job. Ta-

bles covered with resin porous stone hot and emit very strong vapors that burn the

throat forcing them to always wear special masks, heavy gloves to avoid burns.

Page 23: Digital Magazine AEMA (23)

23

All of them work to the research, design, market research, marketing and promo-

tion of international stone and also there are enterprising entrepreneurs whose commit-

ment allows the traditional activity in the area can to continue in spite of some competi-

tors who do not respect the rules…

And so I close the circle, traces of the past to the future and the hard work of the

quarry to the delicate and refined work of craftsman at the factory to get get and see

works of our time, full of marble coating facades and floors, stairs and railings, stone ...

in all the world.
