Happy 2014For Cyprus, 2013 has been a memorable year. Much has beensaid about the calamity that descended upon us as we haveendured the economic crisis, banking crisis and finally thebailout. All of us are ready for a change and, thankfully, theexpectations for 2014 look very positive.

The national awakening to foster change and determination tosucceed involved a good dose of selfanalysis. Much neededair of accountability and openness is setting in across the

island. Readjustment in attitudes and the reevaluation of business practices haveall been on the agenda and best of all, our learned elite in government andeconomic circles have embraced innovative remedies with considerable urgency.

Cyprus’s key lenders have firmly focused on the restructuring of loans as per theCentral Bank (2013) Directives and play an active role in offering lower interestrates on loans and overdrafts. The Cyprus Bank self analysis on the accumulationof toxic debt mentions being ‘ swayed by the climate of prevailing economiceuphoria’.... brings some comic relief only to form a basis for some serious bankrestructuring. On the last day of November Cyprus was greeted by the Standard and Poor’supgrade in its longterm sovereign debt rating to B from the lowly CCC+! It is amilestone which Cyprus waited three years to achieve amidst stringent analysis ofthe Cyprus economy, the completion of the first two Troika’s programmes and thedecisive policies of the government. The next criteria is to achieve theprivatisation objectives, an issue not palatable in some circles, however, most of thecitizens are very keen to shed, for example, the dubious title of payers of the highestelectricity bills in Europe.Cyprus Louis Group operating a number of local hotels and cruise ships recorded aturnover of €172.7 million from €165.4 last year which is indicative of a healthytourism industry. Paphos with its pristine coastline, great beaches and huge numberof the historical sites, a lot of these UNESCO sites, is a natural magnet for tourists. The opening of the brand new Kings Avenue shopping mall on the corner of theApostolos Pavlos and the Tombs of the Kings Avenue in Kato Paphos (110 mil.investment) is another bright light fortourists and locals alike.Restaurants, great shops, supermarket, cinema, etc, etc its a constant buzzof activity and for Paphos, a grandfinish to the year and a promisefor Bright and Happy New Year.
