HISTORY MAKING HISTORY

Breitling SA was founded in Saint-Imier, Bernese Jura by Léon Breitling in 1884. Breitling watches are made in Switzerland using Swiss components. Breitling makes two movements: the calibre B01 and calibre B04, a B01 with an added GMT module.

ETA and Valjoux are the primary suppliers of ébauches used in certain Breitling watches. The ébauches are completed in the Breitling Chronometrie Workshops before undergoing COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) certification.

In 2009 Breitling developed the BR01, a mechanical chro-nograph movement, used in the Breitling Chronomat 01, the first watch produced entirely by Breitling. The Chro-nomat has ever since used a Breitling movement with the latest addition (2012) to the range being the Chrono-mat GMT Limited, a limited edition watch; and the Breit-ling Chronomat 44 GMT, both with the B04 movement.

The company fits certified chronometers in all models.[3] Watches are usually marketed towards either diving (Su-perOcean) or aviation (Navitimer). Aviation models such as the Navitimer offer aviation functions largely as com-plications, since their function in aviation has largely been replaced by modern electronic instruments. The styling of Breitling watches is characterized by polished cases, bracelets and large watch faces which are designed to im-prove readability. Many models have an automatic winding mechanism that is purely mechanical (i.e. using no elec-tronic components) and frequently have complications.

first circumnavigation of the globe by balloon (Breitling Or-biter), the fixed-wing jet pack flights of Yves Rossy, aerobatics teams including the Breitling Jet Team and Breitling Wingwalk-ers, and the Reno Air Race.

Breitling was a sponsor of Team Bentley during their Le Mans 24 Hours campaign, running from 2001 to 2003. To commem-orate this, it created the Breitling Bentley 24 Le Mans Watch.[citation needed]

In the 1965 James Bond movie Thunderball, Bond is given a Breitling Top Time by Q, who tells him it is also a geiger counter. The geiger counter in the watch enables Bond to track down two stolen nuclear warheads. After the movie was filmed the watch disappeared. In 2012 it resurfaced in a car boot sale in England where it was bought for GB£25. It later sold at auction at Christies auction house for over GB£100,000

The Breitling Emergency watch contains a radio transmitter for civil aviation use which broadcasts on the 121.5 MHz distress frequencyand serves as a back-up for ELT-type airborne beacons.[5] (For military users, the Emergency has a minia-turized transmitter operating on the 243.0 MHz military frequency.) Under normal conditions—flat terrain or calm seas—the signal can be picked up at a range of up to 90 nautical miles (167 km) by search aircraft flying at 20,000 feet (6,000 m).

Since 1 February 2009, the Cospas-Sarsat Sat-ellite System has not monitored the 121.5/243.0 MHz frequency; however, the signal transmit-ted by the Emergency was never strong enough to be picked up by satellite, and Breitling has announced that, as these frequencies will still be monitored by aviation, particularly during the localization phase of a rescue attempt, there

are no plans to modify the signal’s frequency.

Reuters reported that in January 2003 two British pilots, Squadron Leader Steve Brooks and Flight Lieutenant Hugh Quentin-Smith, crashed their he-licopter in Antarctica and were rescued after activat-ing their Breitling Emergency transmitter watches.

The Emergency is available for custom-ers who do not hold a pilot’s licence, but they must sign an agreement stating that they will bear the full costs of a rescue interven-tion should they trigger the distress beacon.

The model was heavily advertised by the Bre-itling Orbiter 3—both Brian Jones and Ber-trand Piccard were wearing the Emergency.

Breitling sponsored the Orbiter 3 project, which in 1999 became the first balloon to completely orbit the Earth without landing. A commemorative Or-biter 3 version of the Emergency watch was subse-quently produced, with a production run of 1,999.

In April 2013, Breitling announced

a new version of the Emergency watch.[8] This upgrade transmits on the 121.5 MHz frequency, but adds the 406.04 MHz signal that is moni-tored by satellites. It has a separate, re-chargeable battery for the transmitter.The Emergency II is an improved ver-

sion of the earlier Breitling Emergency, which only transmits on a single an-alog frequency. It’s intended for sur-vival situations that can happen with-out a second’s warning, such as plane crashes, ship sinkings, mountaineering accidents and the sort of potentially fa-tal mishaps that can occur in deserts, jungles and ice caps around the world.

EMERGENCY IIEmergency beacons are great in-surance for aviators and sailors, but they aren’t worth much if a disaster leaves you in one place and the bea-con in another. Just to be safe, you might as well strap the beacon to your wrist, which is what the Breit-ling Emergency II does. The Swiss-made wrist chronograph watch pro-vides those who travel in remote, risky places with a dual-channel emergency satellite transmitter that activates with a twist and a yank.

The Longines Heritage Diver three hands differs from The Longines Heritage Diver chro-nograph with its daring mix of colours set off by the black dial, namely one red hand and red minute zones, touches of Su-per-LumiNova coating and grey rhodium plating. The graduated scale from 0 up to 60 enables the diver to calculate how long he or she has been underwater by synchronizing the 12 o’clock hour symbol with the minute hand. The inner flange is ac-tivated using the crown at 2 o’clock.
