The future of the San Diego Polo Club is always on our minds and so we are currently working with Surf Soccer to form a new organization so that we can secure a long-term lease on the property. We have been work-ing with the Mayor’s office, and all of the stakeholders in the San Dieguito Valley to make a long-term plan for the facility that will include polo, soc-cer, and other youth sports. We are ex-cited about this partnership and very appreciative of the efforts that Surf Soccer has made to improve our fields. This year, Surf Soccer has spent over $250,000 on field renovations and we

The USPA would like to congratulate the San Diego Polo Club on its 28th season as being one of the premier polo clubs in the United States.

It is amazing to think that 28 years ago a few dedicated polo players, in-cluding new president Chris Collins, joined together to turn a river slough into such a magnificent polo club. Offering five grass polo fields, stabling for over 400 horses, an exercise track and an outdoor arena, it’s no wonder people flock to the San Diego Polo Club.

The San Diego Polo Club has become an outdoor tourist attraction, wel-coming both local residents and international polo fans. GIVING BACKPolo players are driven, competitive and passionate. The strong

bonds that form within the polo community lend to a compas-sionate, interconnected group that learns from each other, leans on each other, and lends a hand when a teammate is in need. It is perhaps because of this generosity within the community that charity and polo are so closely associated.

Charity and polo have a long and storied history. Known as the sport of kings, polo has always been aligned with luxury and class. This prestige has offered charitable organizations unique opportunities for raising money and spreading awareness within the polo-playing community.

Since its first season in 1986, the San Diego Polo Club has partnered with a diverse range of local, national and international charities, from the American Heart Association to Sentebale, an international charity started by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. Charity events at the polo club raised over $50,000 in 2013 alone. The club is excited to partner with several new charities for the 2014 season.

Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) is dedicated to educating, em-powering, supporting and connecting families affected by autism. They serve a community of about 38,000, with an average of 600 new fami-lies joining each month.

Free Wheelchair Mission Project is an international non-profit or-ganization that partners with a vast network to deliver wheelchairs to impoverished disabled persons in developing nations. To date, Free Wheelchair Mission has delivered over 640,000 wheelchairs to 84 countries. Wounded Warrior Homes provides transitional housing to veterans who are suffering from traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. The housing gives them a place to stay that is close to medical facilities, and combats homelessness among veterans as they acclimatize to life after service.

Veterans Research Alliance partners with private enterprises, non-profit organizations, and private citizens to fund innovative, life-saving medical and clinical research to preserve the health and welfare of our veterans.

While somewhat unknown, the City of San Diego has a long-held tradition

of polo; one that dates back to the start of the 20th century. San Diego was the home of the first significant polo match in Cali-fornia, and its organizer, John D. Spreckels, is often referred to as the grandfather of the sport.

Spreckels was an entrepreneur from San Francisco and during a business trip to

San Diego, he was captivated by Coronado. Spreckels immediately began investing in the area, most notably in the emerging Ho-tel Del Coronado, and eventually he became the owner. Hoping to entice well-to-do visitors to the hotel, he built the Coronado Country Club on the property. It featured an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, an arena for national horse show competitions and, most importantly, three polo fields.

In 1906, Spreckels sponsored the first major polo tournament in Coronado. He imported a team of English Lords to play against the American team, which was comprised mostly of Naval officers. This match garnered significant attention, and Coronado quickly became known for the quality of its fields, the perfect climate and, most importantly, for the skilled players and horses it was attracting. Over the years, many prestigious polo tourna-


ments were held on Coronado Island and the best players and teams would travel from around the world to compete along-side millionaires and movie stars such as Charlie Chaplin. The grandstand often held the nobility and aristocracy of Eu-rope as well as Americans of great wealth and distinction.

The most notable of these matches was the Polo Challenge. In 1909, Spreckels commissioned a two-foot silver trophy to be presented to the winners of the Polo Challenge and the tournament then be-came known as the Spreckels Cup. Each year, the trophy was engraved with the names of the winning team members. The Spreckels Cup was played every year from 1909-1921 (with the exception of the World War I years), and the last team to capture the trophy was the famous Mid-wick Country Club team led by Carleton F. Burke. After he passed, his widow do-nated the Spreckels Cup to the Coronado Historical Society. Not fully understand-ing the trophy’s historic significance, it was stored away.

Interest in polo began to decrease with the emergence of World War I and there was less European participation, most notably amongst the English teams. Professional teams had to be brought in to replace the English ones, but these costs significantly increased the club’s expenses. By the time the Second World War had come to an end, so had Coronado’s opulent polo era. Coronado Country Club was eventu-ally sold to developers who quickly trans-formed the area into housing tracts and, overnight, polo in San Diego disappeared. While the sport continued to be played, it would take over 40 years before polo would find a permanent home in San Di-ego again.

There was a resurgence of polo in the 1970s and 1980s and a man named Wil-lis Allen set out to establish a new club.

He began searching for a location in Rancho Santa Fe with his son-in-law Harry Collins and his grandson Chris Collins. Allen had a deep connection to the sport. As a youth, he had played arena polo at the Coronado Country Club. After years of tireless work, the Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club opened its gates, and in 1987, the first match was held on the same fields where we play today. Over the past 28 years, the club has welcomed countless players and fans from around the world, and in 1995, the name was officially changed to the San Diego Polo Club.

In 1988, the glory of the Spreckels Cup found its way home as well. In the previ-ous year, Julie Mulvihill-Mayer was able to locate the Spreckels Cup at the California Breeders Association. At that time, it was being used as a punch bowl. However, with the help of Jessops Jewelers, the trophy was restored to its previous splendor and every year since, it is filled to the brim with red roses and presented to the winning team of the Spreckels Cup. Growing up the child of a 20th Century Fox casting direc-tor in 1940s Hollywood, Bill was treated to many days of

riding with stuntmen at the studio barns in Burbank. When Bill was gifted his first horse, Red, by one of the studio stuntmen, he sought out a place to play polo. In exchange for taking up the du-ties of flagman, scorekeeper and grandstand peanut sweeper at the Riviera Polo Club (then called the Beverly Hills Polo Club), Bill was able to board his horse and play some polo.

Bill’s mantra is “I always follow the sun around with polo”—though some would say that the opposite is true: wherever Bill travels, the seeds of a polo community seem to take root and grow. When Bill went off to ROTC training at Colorado A&M (now Colorado State), he and friends Bill Lyle and Marv Beeman created their own small club, which remains to this day. When he graduated, Bill entered the Air Force and was stationed in Yuma, AZ, where a new polo opportunity opened up.

Upon reviewing Bill’s recent accomplishments, his Director of Personnel, Colonel Gilmore, assigned him the job of setting up and running an Officer’s Club. About a year later, when the colo-nel suggested they set up a small barn with horses and tack, Bill seized the opportunity.

If you look closely, Bill Maybery’s fingerprints are all over the California polo community. Over his six-decade in-volvement with the sport of kings, he has had a hand in establishing several important California clubs. In 1957, he played in the first game on the Eldorado Polo Club grounds in Palm Desert, CA, and he was one of the founding members of the San Diego Polo Club in 1986. A horseman since the 1940s, Bill has left his indelible mark on California polo.

“I got a hold of an old cowboy called Woody,” recalls Bill. “He was the last guy that shot a guy in a bar in Yuma and was still walking around! I had a Chevy convertible. He was spitting tobacco out of my yellow convertible and I never did get the tobacco stains out of the car! Woody and I went all over. We bought ten horses, their saddles and bridles with $1500 paid out of petty cash. We were then able to stick and ball behind the runway.”

While stationed in Yuma, Bill started spending time in Palm Desert and playing arena polo. When the game times in Yuma conflicted with his broom polo duties on the base, his commanding officer arranged for young pilots to build up their flight time by flying Bill to his Palm Desert arena games after broom polo was done. Not a bad way to spend his time in uniform. (His uniform: Levis and polo boots.)

When Bill and his Palm Desert polo compadres, Lyle Nixon and Willie Tevis, decided to look for a space to play outdoor polo, they found and leased a grassy runway next to the Desert Air hotel (per-fect for flying in from Yuma!). When their circle of polo players eventually outgrew their little patch in the desert, they found the land that would become the first Eldorado Polo Club, in Palm Des-ert. He and his polo partners hit the Eldorado fields for the first game in 1957.


Over the next few years, Bill started his ca-reer in banking as a loan consultant, even-tually moving into real estate development. He started a family with then wife Susie, who gave birth to twins Billy and Hillary in 1970. Billy went on to become quite a polo player in his own right, playing profes-sionally until 1991. Bill’s daughter Hillary, who he describes as “a good horse gal,” is a professional photographer who has traded in her saddle for a snowboard and skis.

When Bill started his career, he was based out of Los Angeles, and over the next few years, he divided his time among the local clubs: Santa Barbara, Eldorado, Hollywood Park, and a newly leased field in Will Rogers State Park.

“When we lived in Los Angeles, I played at Will Rogers, which was one field and all lo-cal people. They would tell me how many chukkers they wanted and I would set it up. We’d all get together and go out there and play. And that’s the fun way to start polo. That’s how we started Eldorado. A bunch of guys get together and play.”

Bill continued to support the Eldorado Polo Club and when they decided to move to the new land in Indio in 1975, he was a part of the Lake Farm group who raised the capital to make the move. Bill was chairman of the new club and hob-nobbed with royals. In 1986, Bill had the opportunity to meet and play with Prince Charles.

“I was chairman of the club at the time, so I got to play. It was a lot of fun, and a good crowd. Prince Charles was charm-ing, and you could not believe the secu-rity. They had a little plane flying around with guys with guns. It was about 80 de-grees that day, in February of 1986. He got out of the Jaguar, and I was first in the receiving line. He said, ‘I hear you have a daughter and son that play.’ He was well-schooled. Sarah Ferguson’s father had been out three weeks before and they gave him a dossier of all the players that played. I played on his team with Glen Holden and Joe Baker. (We won by the way.)”

As chairman of Eldorado, Bill also played host to Prince Andrew and Sarah Fergu-son, Duchess of York, when they were at-tending a game organized for her father, Major Ferguson. If you get the chance, ask Bill about his behind-the-scenes sto-ries of the royals’ visits—or just about his general adventures in polo. His vantage point has afforded him some priceless candid moments.

When Bill’s friend Harry Collins ap-proached him about starting a club in San Diego, he thought this was a great new opportunity. Bill teamed up with Harry, Willis Allen, Ron Bonaguidi and Ted Gil-dred and found a piece of property that was owned by the City of San Diego.

“Harry got the lease from the City of San Diego,” recalls Bill. “My thing was to raise the money. We all signed notes. All my guys from Santa Barabra signed notes to get the club going. Many of the original guys still have their interests in the club.

“When we started the field down here in San Diego, we had a lot of fun,” remi-nisces Bill. “The fields were new and a lot of wealthy people were horse people and were starting to play polo. It was more of a player-based club—we didn’t get the great

crowds like we do now. Since the popula-tion has exploded, we get a lot more people out—they come out on a sunny Sunday afternoon and mingle with the horses and people. It is great for people watching.”

You can still find Bill out every Sunday to watch polo and share stories. He keeps his eye on the up-and-coming players at the club. “The great thing about polo is that you meet interesting people of all levels of soci-ety—from grooms all the way up to Prince Charles. I have to say, a lot of the success in my career, it was all because of polo. People I knew and people I did business with over the years—it was launched from polo. Some of my closest friends still are polo people.”

If you talk to anyone who has been active in West Coast polo in the last six decades, do not be surprised to find Bill Maybery’s name weaving in and out of their tales. Polo has shaped Bill’s life, and he has been there at every turn to support and grow the Califor-nia polo community. He has given his life to the sport, and it has given as much in return.

“Polo has been fantastic in my life,“ Bill smiles. “Doesn’t everybody play polo?”

how to watchWhether it’s your first polo match or you’re a seasoned fan, the rules of the game can sometimes be confusing. We want you to enjoy every action-packed minute of play, so we’ve put together this guide on how to watch. With these simple terms and rule explanations, you’ll be a polo aficionado in no time. Game on!

The object of the game is to hit the ball between the uprights (goal posts) at oppo-site ends of the field. By doing so a goal is scored. A goal is worth one point and

the team with the most goals at the end of the match is the winner. Matches normally consist of either four or six, 7 ½ minute periods. A period is called a chukker. There is a four minute break between each chukker and a 10 minute break at half time for the players to change horses.

The rules of polo are complex and designed primarily for the safety of the players and their horses. They also afford players the opportunity to create strategic plays and in essence out-smart their opponent. The primary rule is that play follows the line of the ball. Once a ball is hit, the player who is closest to the ball with the narrowest angle has the right of way. Opposing players cannot cross the line too closely to the player who has the right of way, nor can they approach the “on line” player at too sharp an angle, or they risk a foul and subsequent penalty.


HandicapsAll players are awarded a handicap by the United States Polo Association (USPA). Polo handicaps range from -2 goals to 10 goals and are based on a comparison scale with other players of similar skills and abilities. A -2 goal player would be a beginner and a 10-goal player would be among one of the very best players in the world. It is difficult to attain a 10-goal handicap and there are less than a dozen players worldwide with that ranking. Polo tournaments and leagues are handi-capped in order to make the matches as fair and competitive as possible. The sum of a team’s handicaps are always equal.

Positions on the FieldThere are four players per team and their positions correspond with the numbers on their jersey. The Number One Player is an offensive role and he is responsible for neutralizing the opposing team’s de-fense. The Number Two Player is both offensive and defensive and his primary job is to defend and neutralize the Num-ber Three Player on the opposing side. The Number Three Player functions similarly to a quarterback and he is nor-mally the strongest player on the team. His main objective is to set up offensive plays while at the same time, breaking down the offense of the opposing team. The Number Four Player is defense and must be able to execute strong back shots from both sides of the horse. Players will often interchange positions throughout the match.

Defensive PlaysPolo is a contact sport, and one of the best defensive tools a player has is his horse. The ride-off or bump is when a player uses their horse to push their op-ponent off the play or keep them away from the ball. A player may only bump their opponent if they are traveling in the same direction and at the same speed as their opponent, and they must make contact saddle to saddle at less than a 45 degree angle.


FoulsA foul occurs when a player commits an infringement of the rules, whether acci-dental or intentional. Most fouls occur when a player crosses the line of the ball, makes a play on the ball when not hav-ing the right of way, or makes a play that the umpire deems dangerous. When the umpire blows the whistle, play immedi-ately ceases and the time clock stops. The severity of the foul depends on how dan-gerous the infraction was to the horse or player.

PenaltiesA penalty shot is awarded when a foul is committed. Each foul is given a rating between one and nine by the umpires. The severity of the infraction, whether the foul was committed by the offense or the defense, and the intent, all determine the level of penalty imposed. There are five different penalty shots that may be awarded to the team that the foul was committed against, and they can be tak-en from various points on the field.

Throw-inPlay begins, or is resumed, when the umpire throws the ball into play. For a throw-in, teams line up at center field in positions one through four, facing the umpire. The start of each chukker begins with a center-field throw-in and after each goal is scored, the teams line up again.

UmpiresThere are three officials for each match and they are responsible for ensuring safety and enforcing the rules of play. The two mounted officials are the um-pires and the 3rd official is the referee. If the two mounted umpires ever disagree on a foul or the penalty number to be awarded, the decision is given to the referee who views the match from the center-field sideline.

Roberto’s maternal and paternal heritage comes from prominent ancestry. The Estudi-llo family was one of the first European set-tlers in southern California and have lived in this land for over 200 years, from when it was the territory of New Spain, then Mexico and today the United States. They lived in Casa de Estudillo, considered the finest house in Mexican California; it is located in Old Town San Diego and is now a Museum and Nation-al Historic Landmark. His maternal lineage comes from Yucatan, where the family was well known in the region for their cultivation of the henequen plant. His maternal grandfa-ther was a very distinguished, award-winning Civil Engineer and served as Governor of Baja California.

Roberto studied law and is a licensed attorney. His professions are entrepreneur, merchant, and real estate developer. He also studied Polynesian martial arts in the style of Lima Lama.

He was introduced to polo by his brother-in-law Fernando Gutierrez Barron . His polo career started in Rosarito, Baja California, where they played polo at Rancho San Fer-nando. This is the reason Roberto’s team name is San Fernando. He currently owns over 20 polo ponies distributed amongst San Diego, Mexico City, and Rosarito. He has been a member of the San Diego Polo Club for over 15 years, one of the few members to have con-tinuously played during that time.

Roberto sees polo like life: beautiful, exciting, and no matter how many chukkers you play, it’s never enough! His philosophy on life is simple: We are all here for a purpose, we each have a mission to fulfill; we must find it, ac-complish it, and when we leave this world we will have made it a better place.

Samaniego BrothersDavid and Harrison Samaniego have been riding horses since before they could walk. Their mother, Julia Tyler Samaniego, grew up

riding and started playing polo on the University of Virginia Women’s Polo Team. Both Samaniego boys inherited her love of horses and the game of polo and recall their grandmother, Paynie Tyler, riding with them on her lap before they graduated to their own ponies. Both David’s and Harrison’s passion for the sport is reflected in their great respect for horses and love for the game.

As a member of the Westmont College’s intercollegiate polo team, David has contributed to national wins in the 2013 and 2104 seasons. David was the recipient of the 2013 Wil-lis Allen Award for the most promising player under 25 and the 2014 NIC Connie Upchurch Sportsmanship Award.

What is your most memorable game?It would have to be this last win at the USPA National Intercol-legiate Championship. We didn’t want to be seen as the lucky team that upset all the good ones last year. I played one of my best games ever in the finals.

Have you had a chance to travel with polo?In February, I went to the SUPA [Schools and Universities Polo Association] national tournament in England as part of the co-ed intercollegiate Team USA. They have one big tournament a year where everyone competes and then the top four play in the finals. There were 500+ players involved. It was really cool because they shut everything down for our game, so everyone was watching. It was a great experience.

Who has helped you shape your game?My coach John Westley. I train with him five days a week and he has helped me improve my game. Also, when I was playing with Ron Bonaguidi last summer, he really guided and taught me along the way.

What do you love about polo?When I got into high school, the competitive aspect of the game really drew me to it. The more I played, the more I appreciated the horses. I took care of them and really focused on one at a time to get to know their individual quirks. Now I see them as my friends and partners—not just machines that I ride out there.

Harrison came up through interscholastic polo, playing out of Poway for his teenage years. He was chosen to par-ticipate in the prestigious Team USPA program last year, which gave him the opportunity to learn from some of the best polo players in the U.S. and become a mentor to up-and-coming players.

What is your most memorable game?I was playing on a 12-goal team at the Flying H Polo Club with Julio Arellano, the highest rated U.S. player (9 goals). The strate-gies that he taught me made me understand how important that position was in the play.

How was your Team USPA experience?I went to the International Palm Beach Polo Club in February for a clinic and then over the summer I went to Big Horn, WY for training. I was there for 6 weeks with five other Team USPA players. We were mentored there by a lot of different professional players, like Owen Rinehart. Once a week, I would go out to run a polo school, helping out beginner players. The experience opened up a lot of opportunities to play.

What polo player do you admire?I learned lot from Kimo Huddleston at the San Diego Polo Club. He has coached me for many years, playing both with him and against him.

What do you love about polo?I love the fact that horses are involved—it adds a whole other fac-tor of difficulty. Once you get good at it, it feels good to be able to ride like that. It adds a whole other level of excitement being on an animal during play.

new zealandTravel is one of the great joys of life, but sometimes it is

difficult to get a horse lover out of the barn and on the road. There is no better carrot to dangle in front of a polo player than the promise of a game. New Zealand is not only one of the most beautiful countries in the world, it has an ex-citing polo season that affords all that a player might wish for: big glitzy tournaments; visitor-friendly clubs that dot both islands; and polo schools that afford instruction, interaction with local players, and a chance to play on New Zealand thor-oughbreds. As you travel between polo clubs, you just might get a chance to take in all that these two lush islands offer.

Polo has a long and remarkably organized history in New Zealand. In line with its history as a military game, polo was

brought to New Zealand by visiting naval officers in 1888. The first game was organized by E.D. O’Rourke in Auckland, on the North Island. In his enthusiasm, he also brought the game to Christchurch, on the South Island.

The sport grew enough that in 1891, players from the many informal clubs that had sprung up gathered to form the sport’s regulating body, the New Zealand Polo Association. Polo flourished in New Zealand, its growth only interrupted in times of war. The New Zealand Polo Association current-ly recognizes 24 clubs in the country, with over 300 active members.


The gameNew Zealand’s polo season starts with club league play in November that runs to early April, with the major high-goal tournaments of the season happening in January and February. Teams are structured differently in New Zealand than they are in North America. Instead of a patron hiring a team of pros, club selectors put together teams based on the players at their clubs. There is a lot of mobility through-out the season, with players and teams traveling from club to club on the weekends for matches.

Playing polo in New Zealand is a spectacular experience, from the lush couch fields to the landscapes. “The polo in New Zealand is unique for a number of reasons,” says Nina Clarkin, who owns the Mystery Creek Polo Club with her husband, John-Paul Clarkin, the country’s top polo player. “I love it because we play on fan-tastic grounds, in beautiful settings, with good weather. More importantly, I think, is that no matter what level you are playing at, 4 goal or 20 goal, it always incredibly competitive, open, and fast running.”

The MatchesIn 1890, the first major New Zealand tournament was organized around the dona-tion of a silver cup by Captain Savile (aide-de-camp to the governor). Four teams competed in that first match, which was played in Auckland, including a team made up of visiting naval officers and a visiting team from South Island (who took the cup). In 2014, the 124th Savile Cup was won by the Cambridge Polo Club. It remains one of the most prestigious annual tournaments in New Zealand, played at a different club venue each February.

If you are planning your polo trip to New Zealand, the peak time to catch the best high-goal tournaments and the season’s top social events is from the end of January to the end of February. The Dewar Cup starts off the season’s major tournament play at the end of January, followed by the International Polo Day. Held at the Kihikihi Polo Club in the interior of the North Island, International Day boasts a match between the North and South Island teams, which leads into the main event: the International Test Match between the Australian team and an invited interna-tional guest team. The Keyte Watson tournament, held at Cambridge Polo Club, and the Tiger Building Charity Weekend, held at Auckland Polo Club, are also season highlights. All of these tournaments are 16 goals or higher and are supported by teams from around the country as well as international players.

The highlight of the polo season is the BMW New Zealand Polo Open, held at the Auckland Polo Club in February. Unlike in club play, this is a more commer-cial tournament composed of teams with three professionals and one patron. In addition to the high-goal international polo, this year’s week-long event featured Fashion in the Fields, a high-end fashion show that was complemented by celebrity fashion judges circulating to find the best dressed among the attendees. Food trucks lined the outskirts for the hungry attendees and a DJ spun at a fieldside dance floor between matches. The week culminates with a swanky cocktail party, which was hosted at the Britomart Country Club in 2014. The event’s opulence and popular-ity are aimed at keeping the profile of polo high enough to stimulate the interest of new players each year.


Destination: North IslandMystery Creek Polo Club, Mystery Creek, North Island

The Mystery Creek Polo Club is owned and operated by the family of the best polo player in New Zealand. With his 8-goal handicap, John-Paul Clarkin is the highest-ranked polo player in the country. His father, Paul Clarkin, was a popular polo player in his own right who was known on the international circuit as “Mr. Polo.” When Paul died tragically in a polo accident in 2013, Nina and John-Paul joined his mother Chele and cousin Simon in running the family polo club, Mystery Creek.

The club features a bed and breakfast and great “farm chukkas” for players of all levels. Stick and ball is available every day (except Mon-days) and there are organized polo chukkers three days a week in the mornings. Match polo with 4- and 5-goal players is played in the afternoons. A number of top players are based out of the club and they offer the opportunity to compete in tournaments on the weekend. Individual coaching and stick and ball sessions can also be easily arranged.

If you are coming directly to New Zealand from North America, you can fly into the Auckland International Airport and have an adventure on your way to Mystery Creek. Of course, your first stop should be the BMW New Zealand Open at the nation’s largest club, the Auckland Polo Club, in February. The club is just 25 minutes from Auckland International Airport, and nestled in Clevedon Val-ley, known for its fresh oysters, vineyards, and, of course, polo. The North Island offers many cultural experiences as well as high-octane adventures. You can arrange to a visit a traditional Maori Tribal grounds or organize a wine-tasting tour with New Zealand Wine (www.nzwine.com). The Waikato Bay of Plenty is a popular wine region that is just a short drive from Mystery Creek. If you are feel-ing more adventurous, you can explore the active volcanoes of the north, or even explore Middle Earth on one of the many Hobbit/Lord of the Rings tours.


Destination: South IslandMark Harris Polo School, Christchurch City, South Island

Christchurch is the hub city of the south, boasting South Island’s international airport. Just a 15-minute ride from Christchurch, the Mark Harris Polo School is an incredible polo experience. Mark Harris represented New Zealand on the international polo stage for many years. He has hosted polo players at his property from all over the globe for the last 15 years. Catering to all ages and levels of expe-rience, Mark focuses on one-on-one instruction on his high-quality ponies and lush property. The local polo community is strong and Mark is happy to arrange some local club play for players who are interested—he can even set up some friendly chukkers on the near-by beach. He has a self-contained apartment on the property for guests, though there are many hotels and motels nearby for those who prefer to stay off-grounds.

In addition to polo, the club’s location gives you access to a full range of New Zealand experiences. In Christchurch, you can spend your days in open-air markets and public gardens, and your eve-nings in the city’s buzzing nightclubs and restaurants. Once you leave the city, the unspoiled splendor of New Zealand’s spectacular landscape offers an endless number of adventures. You can ride the Mount Cavendish gondola, trek the beautiful Milford and Heaphy tracks, and go rafting in the gorges. Spend relaxing days sunning on the beach, or learn to surf at Kaikoura and Dunedin. And if you want to practice your other swing, there are many lush golf courses to choose from within 15 miles of the polo school.

After his passing, the Estudillo & Gutierrez Families cre-ated an annual memorial tournament in his honor. Roberto Estudillo has since named his team San Fernando, meaning “Saint Fernando.” Monique Estudillo Gutierrez, wife of Fernando and Rob-ert’s sister, and son, Fernandito Gutierrez support this wonderful event every year, and in 2013, the entire Estudillo Fam-ily, including their 101 year-old Grand-mother, was present.
