Founded in 1996, Le Krewe d’Etat wanted to resurrect the traditional satirical style of Mardi Gras parades. The club’s fi rst appearance in 1998 was well received by parade critics and the general public alike. In keeping with its name’s meaning, the “Dictator” reigns over the streets in place of a traditional monarch. The krewe guards its secrecy carefully; the identity of its ruler is never made public. d’Etat’s Latin motto translates, Live to Ride, Ride to Live. They were the fi rst krewe to introduce the blinking bead as a Mardi Gras throw. www.lekrewedetat.com
Le Krewe d’Etat presents a 24-fl oat satirically-themed procession. The theme is always secret until parade time. Special fl oats include the Dictator’s Banana Wagon
pulled by mules the old traditional way, and the Candy Wagon, styled after the Roman Candy cart in New Orleans. Other signature fl oats include the Dictator’s Royal Navy and the Dictator’s Guard. The captain and lieutenants ride on horseback. The 24th annual parade features the Budweiser Clydesdales and bands such as the U. S. Marine Band, Brother Martin High, Tulane University, Prime Time Brass Band (NY), as well as the Citadel Sumrall Guard, the Nawlins Nymphs, and the Dictator’s Dancin’ Daw-lins. Leading the parade is the fabled Skeleton Walking Krewe, which will hand out wooden nickels and the 17th edition of the d’Etat Gazette, which depicts and explains each fl oat. The 545 men of d’Etat will throw footballs, Dictator hats, lighted fl ambeaux beads, blinking gargoyle beads, and riding lieutenants’ doubloons and riding crops. The parade will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on WWL-TV on February 22 at 10:35 P.M. and on WUPL February 23 at 9 P.M.

Founded in August 2000 by a group of life-long Mardi Gras veterans who dreamed of starting their own Carnival organization, the Krewe of Morpheus is named after the god of dreams. Morpheus’s fi rst annual Grand Bal Masque was held in September 2001. Open to all men and women, the club actively supports local charities. www.kreweofmorpheus.com
MORPHEUSThe 20th annual parade of the Krewe of Morpheus rolls with 800 male and
female members in a 24-fl oat procession entitled MORPHEUS DREAMS OF AQUATIC ADVENTURES. Floats were constructed by Rizzuto & Company and subjects include Deep Sea Divers, Tropical Fish, and Beautiful Seashells. There is a new super title fl oat this year with the most up-to-date LED lighting features available. Reigning as Morpheus royalty this year are Jacques Legrand and Shari Fisher. Eighteen marching bands from six states will participate, led by the Spellman College Band. Parade goers can ask for plush Morpheus sheep, moons, and sleepy time bears, as well as hand-decorated sleep masks and new LED logo beads. Five different colored cutout doubloons will be available along with special doubloons for the captain and the king and queen. The parade traditionally includes nearly 70 units. The Morpheus Bash was held November 11, 2019, at Marche.
