PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Dallas Club Members, Participation is being part of a Team. Webster’s definition of “Teamwork” is “the work or activity of a number of persons acting in close association as members of a unit.” While the author of the fol-lowing is unknown, “Lessons from the Geese” is a powerful illustra-tion from nature of effective teamwork. As you read about the natu-ral unity that exists among this species, remember – this same unity can and does exist within Desk and Derrick.

“Lessons from the Geese” “As geese flap their wings, they create an uplift for the bird following. By flying in a V formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if any bird were to fly alone. Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front. When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into formation and another goose flies at the point position. The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. When a goose gets sick or wounded or is shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it is able to fly again or dies. They then launch out on their own, with another formation or catch up with the flock.” Some of the lessons we can learn from the geese are: We can get where we’re going more quickly and easily, if we are traveling on the thrust of one

another. Stay in formation with those who are headed where we want to go, and be willing to accept

their help as well as give to others. Share the hard task and we become dependent on each other. Encourage each other in a positive way. Stand by each other and remember to drop back to help those who might need it. With the upcoming planning of the 2020 Central Region Meeting, we need all the involvement of the unit working as one! I hope this story helps to illustrate some of the concepts of TEAMWORK and/or PARTICIPATION and how Desk and Derrick and a flock of geese can be much the same. HONK! HONK! Keep up the good work!

Horizontal Well Completions: Motivation & Methods

Presented by: Kelly Blackwood

Vice President of Engineering, Asset Manager Browning Oil Company, Inc.

Horizontal drilling was developed as a way to recover more oil or gas without the cost of drilling multiple wells. In 1856, a French hydraulic engineer named Henry Darcy published an equation for flow through a porous medium. To-day this equation is referred to as Darcy’s law. The law was formulated based on results of experiments on the flow of water through beds of sand. This is the basis of hydrogeology. As stated above, part of the reasoning for going horizontal with drilling was to increase production. This was done by increasing the area being fractured. Conventional drilling allowed for access to the ‘pay zone’ being just the actual length/depth of that particular zone. The decision to go horizontal, not only allowed more access to the ‘pay zone’ for a single well but it also enabled multiple horizontal wells from a single well site. Using just one well site for multiple hor-izontal wells eliminated a portion of the drilling costs. The problem with horizontal drilling is the ability to deliver a problem-free well capable of producing economic quanti-ties of hydrocarbons. Drill a well two miles deep (TVD) and then drill two miles lateral (TMD). All of this has to be done under budget but can result in minimal “Spud to Sales” time. Horizontal wells are complex and require substantial planning. Resource plays and tight formations require massive hydraulic fracture treatments. So In most cases horizontal wells increase overall project economics. Submitted by Donna C. Taylor

May 2019 All four of the region meetings are now over. What a great experience it is to reacquaint with old friends and make new ones. I hope you were able to attend at least one region meeting. Great educational opportunities were offered and I commend the host clubs on all of the hard work that was put into the planning and programs. The members, as well as the GAC’s, to be commended for their hard work and dedication in putting these meetings together. Their ad-vice, expertise and extraordinary efforts do not go unnoticed. After attending a region meeting, I encourage you to take back to your clubs what you learned. Become a mentor for a new member, agree to serve on a committee, share new information with a member who was unable to attend—get involved and enthused! We need new mem-bers—they are the building blocks to make our Association stronger! I would like to personally congratulate the newly elected Region Directors:

Shelly McCool – Enid Club – Central Region Christina Forth – Edmonton Club – West Region

Shelly Hildebrant – Bay Area Club – Northeast Region Susan Miller – Westbank Club – Southeast Region

Please join me in extending well wishes to each of them and offer your support and volunteer. There are a couple of deadlines coming up. First of all, the deadline for the tax exempt form that each club must send in is May 15th. This is an important part of keeping our tax exempt status. Secondly, the deadline for nominations to the 2020 Board of Directors is approaching. Have you thought about being an officer of the Association? Being an officer or ADDC has been and is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. You have until June 7, 2019, to decide and submit your application.
