DU MAURIER COUNCILANNOUNCES GRANTS FOR '75Senator Donald Cameron, Chairman of theDu Maurier Council for the Performing Artshas announced that the Council will allocate$336,000 to thirty-six Canadian performingarts groups. The recipients will utilize themoney in the presentation of a variety of1975 projects.

The national performing companies includesymphony orchestras in the following cities:Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina,Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Hamilton,London, St. Catharines, Windsor, Kingston,Montreal, Sherbrooke, Quebec and St. John's.Theatre groups in Vancouver, Victoria,Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Sud-bury, London, Montreal, Eastman andLennoxville will also receive grants.Opera associations have been selected aswell and include the Canadian Opera Com-pany, L'Opera Du Quebec and the SouthernAlberta Opera Association. The BanffCentre will receive financial suppqrt forthe Banff Festival of the Arts and LesGrands Ballets Canadiens and the InstitutInternational de Musique du Canada will beallocated grants to complete the list of suc-cessful applicants.

LONDON TO DISTRIBUTEFOR PENNY FARTHINGLondon Records has just completed anagreement to handle Canadian distributionfor Penny Farthing Records of England,owned by Larry Page.The first release scheduled under the agree-ment is "If You Get Hurt" and "Girl CalledLove" by Paul da Vinci. Da Vinci is, notedfor his backup vocals on the Rubettes hit"Sugar Baby Love".

LISLE IS SHOWCASEDAT TORONTO'S FRIARS,Bronco recording unit, Lisle, played theFriars, one of Toronto's top rock showrooms, week of Nov 11. Their repertoireincluded several popular melodies andtheir own original material, not to men-tion several rock and roll revival skits.The group is a high energy entertainmentpackage, well -costumed and choreographed.Coupled with Lisle was fourteen year oldJoey Dion, who paraded his talents to aless than interested audience. The boy'saggressiveness and arrogance combined toovershadow his talents. One must alsotake into consideration the setting.

DEMIS ROUSSOS TO TOUREASTERN CANADIAN CITIESLondon Records has confirmed plans forinternational recording star, Demis Rous-sos, to tour Eastern Canada during thefirst part of December. The scheduleditinerary includes appearances in Toronto(6) at Eaton's Auditorium, Ottawa (7)Centre National des Arts, Sherbrooke (8)the Cinema Granada, and Montreal (9-10) Theatre Maisonneuve.Roussos has earned superstar status inEurope and South America as a formerlead singer for Aphrodite's Child and as asolo star whose albums number three todate - "Forever and Ever", "My OnlyFascination", and "Greek Side Of MyMind". The multi-lingual singer's latestsingles are "Forever and Ever" and"Lovely Lady of Arcadia".

COOPER'S GREATEST HITSCERTIFIED AS GOLDThe RIAA has certified "Alice Cooper'sGreatest Hits" as gold in recognition of salestotalling over one million dollars. In additionto this most recent gold award, Cooper hasfive other LP's surpassing the million dollarmark - "Love It To Death", "Killer","School's Out", "Billion Dollar Babies"and "Muscle Of Love". The albums all comeunder the Warner Bros. catalogue listings."Killer", "School's Out" and "BillionDollar Babies" have all gone on to earnthe Warner Bros. platinum award for unitsales in excess of one million.

WARNER BROS. $ENDSTOP ARTISTS TO EUROPEWarner Bros. Records has announced amajor concert and promotion tour of Eur-ope which will feature six major acts includ-ing the Doobie Brothers, Tower of Power,Montrose, Little Feat, Graham CentralStation and a special guest to be announced.Titled "The Warner Bros. Music Show" thetour launches in Manchester, England onJanuary 15th and will play the final dateon February 4th in Paris. Seven other Euro-pean cities will play host to the show, theyare: London, January 18th and 19th, Frank-furt (20,21), Munich (22,23), Hamburg (25,26), Dusseldorf (27,28), Amsterdam (29,30), and Brussels (31) and February 1st.

A complete production is planned for stagesetups using Warner Bros. cartoons and films.Two three -act performances are slated onsuccessive nights in each of the nine citieson the itinerary. Several months of prepara-tion have gone into the project and activitieswere supervised by Warners' heads of ArtistsRelations & Development Bob Regehr andCarl Scott, with Jo Berman arranging asso-ciated tour activities. The tour will be trans-porting more than 100 people consisting ofartists, company personnel and road crewsin addition to 28,000 pounds of stage equip-ment. Brian Croft and his company willserve as European road managers, with ChrisEhring acting as the American road manager.Muriel Hodler has been appointed as theEuropean merchandising coordinator and allpublicity will be taken care of by Anne MarieMicklo of Warner's International CreativeServices Department in conjunction withMoira Bellas, London Press Officer forWarner Bros.European promoters for the string of con-certs are Barry Dickens in England, Lippman& Rau and MAMA in Germany, Barry Visserin Holland, GEMCO in Belgium and AlbertKoski in France.

ANDERSON TO LONDONSALES/PROMO 'PEGBruce Anderson has been appointed salesand promotion representative for LondonRecords of Canada to be based at the label'sWinnipeg branch.Anderson has been with the Winnipegbranch for three years where he has acquireda sound knowledge of the business both /

from a marketing and promotion standpoint.He replaces Gary Chalmers who has movedto London's Montreal headquarters as Cana-dian label manager.

NABET MEMBERS AGREETO CANADIAN AUTONOMYAt a recent convention in Atlanta of theNational Association of Broadcast Employeesand Technicians, delegates representing4,200 Canadian members and 5,900 Ameri-cans agreed that Canadians should havecomplete autonomy, thus setting the wheelsin motion for the election of a Canadian"international president" next month. Themove for separate identity was initiated byMontreal delegates, and supported by most'other Canadians. Interim Canadian presi-dent, Ronald Pambrun, said about 60% ofAmerican delegates voted in favour. Thetwo national groups will continue to sharethe same name and seal, and will hold a jointone -day convention every four years. Ajoint council will be set up to deal withmatters of common interest, but will have anadvisory function only.Since NABET began operating here in 1951,dues from Canadian members have beenretained in Canada, and the internationalexecutive council, though dominated byAmericans, has never exercised its constitu-tional power to intervene in the Canadianunion's affairs. The Canadian union has nomembers outside Canada at the presenttime, but might try to organize broadcastingworkers in other countries in the future.According to Pambrun, the union plans toextend its jurisdiction into areas outsidebroadcasting, such as electronic manufactur-ing and installation of closed-circuit televisionsystems.

TIMBRE SOUND REACHESMULTI -MEDIA STATUSSince Timbre Sound Industries purchasedYellow Point Lodge in Ladysmith outsideNanaimo, B.C. on Vancouver Island, it hasincreased in size to the point where othercompanies have been acquired - Timbre OneSound Studios Ltd., Thunderbird Produc-tions Ltd., Yellow Point Productions Ltd,Vancouver Music Publishing, SweetwaterRecords, Stamp Records and Natural SoundsRecords.

Timbre One Sound Studios Ltd. is locatedin Vancouver and offers 16 -track facilities,Thunderbird Productions Ltd. is a communi-cation consulting service which specializesin work on feature films, brochures andmulti -media displays and Yellow PointProductions Ltd. deals with producing starsand hit records.Yellow Point Lodge now houses a milliondollar recording studio which is scheduledfor completion in 1975. The concept offeredis "A Canadian High" and studio and lodgetimes are available upon request. Timbre OneStudios in Vancouver will accommodatemusicians until the studio at Yellow Pointis finished.

MATERICK/MANN LEADWEA'S BOOKING SKED.WEA's Gary Slaight has a full month ofactivity for personal appearances by manyof the label's top acts. Asylum artist RayMaterick ("Linda Put The Coffee On") isbooked at Toronto's Riverboat (3-8). On the12th Manfred Mann and The Earth Bandplay Convocation Hall and Genesis isscheduled for a concert bowl performanceat Maple Leaf Gardens on December 16th.Dionne Warwicke and the Miracles willappear at the O'Keefe Centre for a week-long engagement (9-14). Charles Mingus isfeatured at the El Mocambo for six days(16-21).

DATES SET FOR C11 ANDJUNO AWARDS SHOWThe Annual Juno Awards and Communica-tion Eleven (C11) have been set for March22nd to 24th. The C11 meet will be held atToronto's Four Seasons -Sheraton HotelSaturday, March 22nd and Sunday March23rd. The Juno Awards will be televisedfrom the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto'sCanadian National Exhibition grounds onMarch 24th (Monday).Details are now being finalized and advanceregistration for the events which will takeplace over the three days in March, willbe announced in January.The C11 meet will be comprised of aspeaker's session Saturday morning andafternoon. Speakers will be announced inRPM at a later date. On Saturday evening,RPM will host a reception in the CivicBallroom of the Four Seasons -Sheraton forregistrants and registered guests. On Sunday,there will be hospitality suites open through-out the hotel and events throughout the day.Co-ordinating C11 for RPM will be StanKlees of Stan Klees Ltd., who looks afterSpecial Projects for RPM and the JunoAwards.On Monday evening, the Juno Awards willbe televised from the Queen ElizabethTheatre in the CNE grounds in Toronto.This year's Juno Awards will be televisedfor the first time and will include perform-ances by Canadian recording artists. A com-mittee representing various segments of themusic industry has been formed to arrangethe performances and to revamp the JunoAwards for television. The committee isworking very closely with the CBC.Various aspects of the voting and categorieshave also been revamped by the committeeto upgrade the Juno Awards as a promotionalvehicle for Canadian recording artists and tomake the show more acceptable to the view-ing public.Based on last year's attendance at the JunoAwards,the event will sell out well in advanceand requests for tickets are already beingreceived. No advance tickets will be madeavailable until the official announcementappears in RPM.

March 22, 23 and 24 will be the big daysand possibly the biggest days in the Canadianmusic industry.

SUPREME COURT UPHOLDSJUDGEMENT AGAINSTMUSIC PUBLISHERSCanada's Supreme Court handed down ajudgement in favour of several music pub-lishers (Oct. 11/74) against Canusa Records,Inc., a Canadian recording company and itsprincipal officer Tony Roman.Mr. Justice Collier held that Canusa hadrecorded an unlicensed version of "ThereGoes My Everything", a country song,which was translated into French under titleof "Quand Tu Libras Cette Lettre". TheCourt held that such recording and transla-tion was an infringment of copyright inCanada. Damages were awarded for bothinfringement and conversion, an accountingof profits, an injunction and costs against,not only Canusa but against Roman person-ally who, the Court held, had authorized anddirected Canusa throughout.A spokesman for the Harry Fox Agencyapplauded the decision and indicated thatother legal actions were pending againstsimilar infringers.

The second Big CountryThe second BIG COUNTRY meet was heldon November 23 and 24 at Toronto's Inn onthe Park. Approximately one year prior, BigCountry had taken place at the Holiday Inn(Don Valley). Somehow the meetings appear-ed to be very similar, but the latest versionhad one ingredient that seemed to make itmore of a positive. In his opening speech WaltGrealis told the audience:

.. We have gathered you here to communicate. To share opinion and fact. Your inputas well as the evaluation of the output ...will be the sum total of what you will gainfrom these two days.

"It may result that at the end of this twoday meet, a group of you will join forces toform an association of country music in

". . . the prophets of doom, the messengers of

mediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the new genera-tion of competent, creative, confident artisans andby all those of preceding generations who havealready demonstrated their freshness of mind, theirtalent and their capacity for inspired leadership."

We alto can enjoy ourselvesas a group with a common interest." ... This is not an IMITATION of any-thing that goes on in other countries ...because this is NOT another country. Weare here ... now ... and we are uniquelyCanadian.

"RPM is the medium of the industry. Any-thing I have to say, I can say 52 times ayear in a trade paper that has the largest cir-culation of any music trade paper in Canadaor that comes into Canada ... if not agreater readership than all the other tradepapers combined."I should make way for a group of gentlemenwho will inform and stimulate your thinking.They WILL communicate. You in turn willhave the opportunity to communicate withthem."

From the very beginning that's exactlywhat seemed to happen. Each speakerbrought forth a very positive view of whatcountry music in Canada could be. Solu-tions were in the forefront. The problemsseemed to be known by all the speakers whocame up with inspiration and innovationthat could lead Canadian country music ina positive and meaningful direction.Excerpts from many of the speeches appearin this issue.

In the afternoon session, Cam Ritchie,General Manager of BMI Canada, moderatedone of the best sessions that has ever occur-red at any of the Communication series ofmeetings. A great deal of the success of thecommunication can be attributed to Mr.Ritchie's ability as a moderator.The panel consisted of: Pete Beauchamp/A&M Records, Jack Feeney/RCA Studios,Barry Haugen/RCA Ltd., Dave Johnson/CFGM Radio, Dave Peevers, Charlie Russell/CJCJ Radio, Terry Trojek/Taylor's RecordSales.

Each of the members of the panel made anopening remark and opened for questions.The panel supplied so much input, thathalf way through the afternoon, the audiencegot wrapped up in the dialogue to the point.that much of the input was coming from thefloor. What was said was valid and the paneleventually became the audience. Participa-tion was at a high point.

Cam Ritchie put it well at the end of thesession when he said, "The mind can absorbonly that which the seat can endure", anda four hour session of complete communica-tion and participation reluctantly came to anend.

In the Communication Series tradition,Saturday night was set aside for informalcommunication at the RPM cocktail party.Here too, small groups gathered to discussthe subjects of the day's meetings, renewOld acquaintances and make new contacts.Here were Canadian country people gatheredtogether with a common cause in a congenialsetting. Who can tell what the end result ofall togetherness will bring.Certainly, country people did share theirproblems and solutions. They must havefelt that the struggle of country music wasone that many others shared.Two to three hundred people gathered inthe Centennial Ballroom on Sunday after-noon for the Big Country Showcase. Theshowcase had grown from a five hour eventto an eight hour extravaganza. Over thirtyperformers were showcased in a concert -likesetting with full and elaborate lighting anda battery of sound equipment. The stagingwas good according to many of the artists(who chose to comment) and the sound wasexcellent.

One of the problems was the equipmentchanges which occurred after each set, butthis was an opportunity for Walt Grealis tointroduce some of the country disc jockeysfrom across Canada who took over the MCingchores.

Throughout the day, artists and audienceshowed great enthusiasm. Here was a settingmuch like the benefits held in the legitimatetheatre. Many of the artists had never seentheir contemporaries work before. Bookersand promoters saw the acts in a theatricalsetting. Many in the audience sat throughthe whole eight hours of entertainment.Running opposition to the showcase was theGrey Cup game (a tough act to compete with)and many companies had hospitality suitesthroughout the hotel, but the stalwartaudience remained to watch the best thatCanada has in country music.

It was put very aptly by one entertainerwho said, "I wouldn't have missed these twodays for the world".

When will Big Country come again? Nextyear RPM will sponsor a different kind ofBig Country meeting. Many of the ideas thatcame forth at this meeting are now beinglooked into. The next Big Country will betopped off by the Big Country AwardsPresentation.

We are working on it now. Don't miss it nextyear.In view of the importance of the messagesconveyed to Big Country delegates byfour very knowledgable members of thebroadcast and record communities, wehave taken the liberty to devote as muchspace as possible to their texts, reprintingentirely those texts which were madeavailable to us.

Ben Nobleman, as a York Borough Alder-man and president of the Toronto chap-ter of the Association of Canadian Tele-vision and Radio Artists (ACTRA) usesboth of these offices to promote Cana-dian talent and is one of the few Canadianpoliticians to offer his time and effort tomake the lot of the Canadian entertainera better one. In his speech Noblemannoted: "Canadian talent has, in the pastthree years, made enormous strides - main-ly due to Mr. Pierre Juneau and the CRTC,who could be called the Sir John A. Mac-donald of Canadian content". Noblemanmade his nationalism clear explaining:"I'm not anti-American - I'm pro -Cana-dian and there's much we can learn fromthe Americans, especially in the field ofpromotion. Because they know how to

shout from the rooftops that 'We are thegreatest' and really, this is what we haveto say. We have to stop being shy. We haveto yell from our rooftops 'We have greattalent in this country, and we're proud ofit' this is what we have to do constan-tly". Nobleman touched on the problemsCanadian performers were having withthe U.S. Immigration laws which stemmedfrom an act of the U.S. Congress in 1968.Nobleman has approached the Canadianauthorities: "I think there has to be reci-procity at the border", adding, "I'vewritten to Mr. Trudeau suggesting that hebring this up when he is next speakingwith the U.S. President!' Nobleman hasconstantly called on government officialswho, in turn, have advised him that theirefforts in easing the border problems haveall been in vain. He also touched on hispet subject - the CNE Grandstand, andoutlined some of the areas in which hewould like to see improvement. He pound-ed home his point with: "The feeling thatthe Canadian public will not support Cana-dian pertormers is erroneous. It you pro-mote enough - if you educate enough, theCanadian public will support your Cana-dian acts".Jury Krytiuk, president of Boot Records,in his first major speech to the industry,was encouraged by: "Such a feeling ofoptimism in the Canadian country musicindustry". Krytiuk was critical of theaverage promotion man and his promotionendeavours with a new Canadian countryrecord. He asked the question: "Howmuch time does he devote to countrymusic"? He asked the same question ofretailers, insofar as the space they allowfor the promotion of country records intheir newspaper ads and display. He drewa parallel between his company and othersin the prOmotion of artists and records.He pointed up how Boot Records got be -

"In Switzer-land", said Krytiuk, "there are two super-stars - Johnny Cash and Stompin' Tom".He revealed that in Germany over 50%of country music programmed on radiois Canadian country rather than the Nash-ville brand and that the feeling for Cana-dian country has grown tremendouslythroughout Europe. He said: "There's'something that Canadian country musichas that people outside Canada are accept-ing and are liking, but we, here in Cana- -da, aren't standing on the rooftops andshouting about what we've got. Tellingthe people what we have. We're hiding inour bedrooms saying that what we gotisn't good enough". Krytiuk would like tosee more Canadian news, spread interna-tionally and pointed up how importantRPM is, saying: "RPM has grown to bethe widest read trade publication in Cana-da. It is also the publication that foreign-ers look to for news of what is comingout of Canada. People in Nashville, Japanand England want to hear of our latestsuccesses and RPM is a tool which canbe used to tell of our latest successes".He asked the question: "Are we doingthat? Are we standing up and braggingthat Terry Jacks had the biggest sellingCanadian single of all time? Are we stand-ing up and telling what grosses are doingin the concert business compared to otherforeign acts"? He left his audience with:"We're almost there. We're almost to thestage where the country acts that we havein Canada are going to succeed worldwide,the same way as the Nashville acts are do-ing. We've got the talent - we've got thesongwriting ability and all we need is that

Justin McCarthy, president of CommunityCommunications (CHOO Radio), was one ofthe first Canadian broadcasters (owners) toresearch the problems of programming withavailable Canadian content and lay his cardson the table. His speech is reprinted here inits entirety.

"My real purpose here is to share with yousome of the considerations that went intothe decision -making process of selecting acountry format for our station. This wasnot a whim or caprice - it was a decision basedon a study of the community we are licensedto serve and an analysis of what else wasavailable in our area.Several factors were conspicuous in the dem-ography of our community which wouldinterest you.The industrial output per capita is 3 timesthe Canadian average and 35% higher thanHamilton. Disposable income is 24% higherthan the Canadian average, but educationlevels showed less than 4% with any univer-sity training and by far the greatest percentwith only some high school.These are hard working, industrious people,many of whom are employed in skilled andsemi -skilled factory work. They are family -oriented with some 25% more people perhousehold than the Canadian average.We then took a look at their media habitsand found that the dominant station wasCHUM which was somewhat of a surprisebecause we thought we were dealing withan extension of Metro where CFRB is thedominant station. Our limited funds andconsuming impatience made us realizevery quickly that it would be foolish to tryand fight CHUM. We also learned thatquite a number of people were listening toCFGM but were having trouble with recep-

tion. At this point we started asking moreand more questions because we were playing40% country and 60% pop - trying to gen-erate a sound we called "a working man'sCKFM". We discovered that the countryfans didn't like the pop and the pop fansdidn't like the country - so our attempt tokiss all the girls was failing.Based on what we had learned about ourcommunity demographically and theirpropensity for a particular type of music,we elected to go country. This was going todo several things for us: First, it wouldmeet the needs of a sufficiently large segmentof our community to develop a sizeableaudience which, secondly, would respondto our advertisers' messages and keep us inbusiness.

Well, the response has been most gratifying.At this point, I can't give you audiencefigures but we know from the phone calls,letters and reaction to advertising that theyare listening to us and liking us - and yeswe are making money.

In the past year, I have been exposed to allaspects of our broadcast operation - fromengineering through programming, sales -the whole spectrum and from this I wouldlike to draw your attention to a problem wehave at 14 CHOO, which I am sure is sharedby all broadcasters in Canada. It has to dowith the 30% Canadian content rule.I would ask you to pay particular attentionto this problem because you are the peoplewho can do something about it.The problem, in a word is this - we as broad-casters are required, as a term of our licence,to play 30% Canadian content, and there is ashortage of "first class" Canadian material.The Canadian record industry - sales that is,all product sold in Canada - had sales of$148 milllion in 1973. Of that amount only$10, 360. or approximately 7% were

Canadian releases. This means that 93% ofsales were of U.S. material.

We as broadcasters are having to work the7% of your output almost to death in orderto comply with the 30% Canadian contentregulation. I can't tell you what percentageof the 7% is country, so you can see, for acountry station, the problem is magnified.Let's examine the problem to see if we canfind a solution. It is a fact that most recordcompanies in Canada are American owned.

Is it not also a fact that they are Americancontrolled with business decisions beingmade in the U.S. and their prime objectiveis to promote American product in Canadaand to hell with the Canadian musicindustry?Here's the crunch. The CRTC is not aboutto rescind or relax the Canadian contentrule - so we must conclude they are deadserious about forcing the development of a

Canadian music industry. The CRTC has nojurisdiction over the record industry but weall know that other branches of governmenthave complete jurisdiction anytime they wantto use it and it may be wise to recognizehow serious they are about this aspectof Canadian culture and do something aboutit before the Customs and Excise peopleget into the act and slap a tariff on all impor-ted material.It is bound to be noticed that one Americanrecord company recently dropped sevenCanadian country artists from its roster,presumably because their material wasn'tselling or not selling sufficiently. I amwondering what quantity and quality ofpromotion was put behind their recordingsas compared with American recordings orwere they given a chance at all.We are all very aware of the marketing prob-lems. We understand the costs of doingbusiness in every stage from production,

packaging, promotion, distribution etc., butwith the broadcast industry crying forproduct and regulated to play it - it mustbe looked at as a business opportunity.Half the marketing job is done.You know, many broadcasters were shockedwhen the 30% rule became legislation. Theyhad been warned and couldn't see the hand-writing on the wall. I guess I have to suggestthat the record industry take the necessarysteps now because the CRTC is dedicatedto this objective and the handwriting is cer-tainly on the wall for you as it was for thebroadcasters.

In closing, may I suggest a solution?

Let us, collectively, combine our efforts, inorder to form a Canadian country musicresource. With our understanding and exper-tise in computers, and related technology,surely we can design, execute and control aCanadian country music talent bank fromwhich any or each of us may draw. Itcould be a clearing house for talent whichwould at the same time provide motivation .

It is an honor I intend to take very seriouslyand to devote my time to the furtheranceof country music outside the United States.

I suppose, apart from loving country music,my other credentials are the fact I was bornin Wheeling, W. Va., appeared on WWVA inthe late 20's with a group called The GrayGoose orchestra selling Buster Brown shoes,and was a regular attendee at the SaturdayNight Jamboree throughout the 30's.As the international Board member of CMA,along with Gary. Buck, I would first like tosummarize the CMA Presidents report thatwas given at the October convention andthen talk about the Canadian country musicbusiness.

I give this report not for purposes of propa-ganda but rather to inform you of the growthof country music, especially in broadcastingand to indicate the various projects thathave been developed and services available tous for future planning consideration inCanada.

'The Country Music Association is now inits sixteenth year and has 4,917 members.

In its objective to find and sponsor new pro-jects to further country music the past yearthere was the Awards Show which had anaudience rating of 40.

The Country Music Hit Parade also had anaudience rating of 40.

The CMA participated in the Johnny CashMidnight Special with a 37 rating, and thelylac Davis Midnight Special with a 34 share.this year's Fan Fair attracted 15,000 andthe CMA participated in, or directly pro-duced the Country Girls Show hosted byLynn Anderson; CMA Show hosted byDave Houston; the Reunion Show and theGeorge Jones - Tammy Wynette Show.The International Show at the Conventionhad artists from Belgium, Canada (CarrollBaker), New Zealand, Australia, Hollandand Japan. Gary Buck was the co -producer.The Country Music Radio Seminars andTalent Buyer seminars to study and improvethe inner workings of the country music in-dustry are gaining in interest and attendance'.The CMA survey of all radio stations in theUnited States and Canada has become oneof the most helpful documents in the countrymusic industry. This survey is re-evaluatedand updated every year to determine thenumber of stations that program countrymusic.

This year's survey indicates the following:1,116 stations program country music on afull-time basis; 1,364 program three hours ormore; 2,913 stations program some countrymusic during the day, whether full-time orless. All told there are 27,499 hours ofCountry Music being performed daily overthe airwaves in the United States and Canada.In other areas the Country Music Associationis deeply involved in the problem of tapepiracy, participation in the Country MusicMonth and the D.J. awards contest.

It has grown in sixteen years to a viableorganization dedicated to serving all facetsof the Country Music industry on an inter-national level.Now let us turn to the Canadian CountryMusic Industry.I do not share the opinions and prophesiesof those who say it is rapidly dying and ifnothing constructive comes from thesemeetings we can write it off.We must remember the Country MusicAssociation which was founded for the pur-pose of assisting in the building of an indus-try has only been in existence for sixteen

years. And it was founded at a time whenthere were only about 100 radio stationsbroadcasting country music compared to2,913 today.I am also concerned, and have been for sev-eral years, that criticism and praise in themedia has been confined to broadcasters,artists, promotion people and record companymanagers.If we are to begin to develop a Canadianmusic industry, and today we are talkingabout a Country Music industry we mustdefine the components of that industry-we must conscientiously analyse ourweaknesses - and we must begin a longrange program of objectives that includestotal involvement of all segments of theindustry.Picture the industry as a circle. It is infiniteand unbroken, if any segment is brokenthere is no industry.At the top of the circle is the artist, or groupof artists. Because it all begins when anartist decides to dedicate his life to thisprofession.At the time he has made this decision healigns himself with a manager, or decides togo it alone. For those who have a manager,this manager and his degree of professional-ism forms an important segment of theindustry circle.When a recording contract is signed we moveto the segment of marrying the artist withthe repertoire and a producer.The fourth segment of this circle, and thefinal in the creation of the product is therecording.We now have what the artist, the composer,the producer and the A&R man feel is HITproduct.As we progress into the next segment of thiscircle it is the one that receives the mostattention, praise and criticism. However,the praise and criticism for the success orfailure of promotion has been limited tobroadcasters and promotion men. I haveread very little press regarding the areas ofartist exposure in the press and magazines,in-store displays or the extent of wholesaleand retail outlets to participate or not parti-cipate in co-op artist promotions.We do agree however, that the promotionsegment of this circle is vital to both artistand country music success, and it must takemany forms by many people.The extremely important part of the circlethat is constantly overlooked in analysingways to develop a music industry is distri-bution.Record sales are to a large percentage basedon impact buying and if the record is not inthe store or prominently displayed, a saleis lost. Very rarely will a customer place anorder for a record and come back a weeklater to pick it up.Because of rising costs, cost of money andinventory, the distribution chain is movingmore and more into buying product thathas fast turn -over. And as managers theyare rightfully fullfilling their responsibilitiesto their shareholders. To build a CountryMusic industry with Canadian artists theymust participate in this total involvementand gamble like the rest of us.And so the final segment of this circle isthe purchase of the product by the public.To relate this industry, as I have attemptedto define it, to Canadian Country Musicand the development of a long range pro -

Joy in the hockey arena atten bucks a headI must be getting old. I went to a GeorgeHarrison concert the other day and cameaway feeling like I shouldn't have gone.Shouldn't really complain, I suppose. BruceBissell of A&M Records kindly arranged

for two tickets, they were scarce and expen-sive, for yours truly and companion to seeGeorge and company, including Billy Prestonwith the hope no doubt that I'd have a niceword or two for Billy and for George's DarkHorse Records which A&M distributes. I dohave a nice word or two: Billy did a hell ofa show, stole it, in fact and Dark HorseRecords is putting out some good stuff, asmay be seen in the new albums feature.But Godammit, if I'd been one of the payinghorde, I would have felt pretty bad abouthaving sprung twenty bucks to breathe otherpeople's second hand smoke and to see theback of George's head bobbing up and down.The thing was thrown, you see, in the PacificColiseum, which is Vancouver's answer tothe Roman Forum. Instead ofgladiatorsand lions, however, the Coliseum is usuallypopulated by teams of inept men withwooden sticks who chase a small disc ofhard, black rubber about on ice. Theacoustics of the place are great for that, slap -shots echo dramatically across from wall towall. When you're trying desperately tohear "Something" though, the sound leavessomething, a lot of things, to be desired.The tickets I had, each worth according tothe legend thereon, the sum of ten bucks,carried the message that seating was to be"festival style". What sort of festival thepromoters had in mind, one cannot be sure,but the resulting seating pattern closelyresembled early Mongolian uprising. Peopleover two hundred pounds with no sense

of humour and large clubs were actually ableto catch distant glimpses of the great George'sface through the haze. Those of us who tipthe scales at less than two hundred pounds, orwho are not of a violent bent, or who weresilly enough not to bring a club had tocontent ourselves with quick flashes ofthe man's back as he came into sight aroundthe speaker columns.

The stage, an imposing affair, was cunninglyplaced between the red line and the blueline, effectively eliminating the view of atleast a third of the people. I figure theytook in about forty or fifty thousand dollarsfrom people who didn't even see the show.I really wish I could say something niceabout the whole thing. I'm one of the hardcore Beatle admirers from way back and wassure that the show would give me ampleopportunity to praise George and the wholeLiverpool madness to the skies. Sad to say,except for the brief heights to which BillyPreston was able to carry us, the show wasa chaotic, numbing disaster.The strange thing is that the people whoput out the bucks for those things, andmake arrogant, low principled promoterswealthy, don't care. For reasons beyondmy understanding, they will continue topay exhorbitant ticket prices to attend showswhich they cannot see and can barely hear.Maybe they don't care. Maybe the wholeidea is simply to surround yourself withnoise and people and the pungent aroma ofsmoldering grass. Maybe the music is onlysecondary, an excuse, and a flimsy one atthat, to congregate, to form for an houror two a tribal bond with twenty thousandother people in the same lonely boat.If some promoter were to latch onto thatidea, the music business could be in fortrouble. Imagine for a moment sellingtickets (ten bills per head, of course) fora tribal gathering, "festival" seating naturally.Christ, you could eliminate the live enter-tainment altogether and barely notice thedifference.

As well as major and independent recordlabels, RPM goes to all the major radio sta-tions in the U.S., developing an increase ininterest by music directors and on -airpersonalities.

Politically Canada is divided into ten prov-inces and two territories. Each of the prov-inces is sovereign in its own sphere, tothe degree defined in the British NorthAmerica Act and its amendments, and asnew provinces have been organized theyhave been granted political status equivalentto that of the four original provinces whichunited in 1867. The Yukon Territory wascreated in 1898, the Northwest Territoriesin 1905; these territories are administeredby the federal government.

In each province there is a provincial legis-lature to which Members are elected fromthe various electoral ridings throughout theprovince. In the province of Quebec there is,in addition, an Upper Chamber called theLegislative Council, whose members areappointed for life. By law, the provinciallegislatures must meet at least once a yearand there must be an election at leastevery five years. The head of a provincialgovernment is the Premier, normally theleader of the political party having thesupport of the largest number of Memberselected to the Legislative Assembly. ThePremier appoints Ministers to head thevarious departments of government and putinto effect the measures decided on by thelegislature; the permanent head of eachdepartment, its senior civil servant, isusually called the Deputy Minister.

The single,"Has Anybody Seen America", by IanMcLean, a songwriter debuting the recordscene, is lyrically strong - and complimen-tary to the U.S., a rarity today, even fromtheir own artists. McLean is somewhat ofa unique talent as well. His isn't the poli-shed, bushy -tailed, over -gushy delivery -he communicates in such a manner as toinstil instant confidence that what youare listening to is an important message,and his impact line,."Has Anybody SeenAmerica", remains with you for the re-mainder of the day.

ATTIC'S PONDWATER PACTSWITH DOWNCHILD MUSICPondwater Music, the publishing arm ofAttic Records, has signed a contract withDownchild Music whereby the latter'scatalogue will be administrated by Pond -water. The negotiations were firmed byDownchild's David Bleakney and Alex-ander Mair of Pondwater/Attic.Both companies have combined forces todevelop a major promotion push for Down -child Blues Band's initial thrust into theU.S. market. The campaign, in conjunctionwith the group's Cleveland engagement inDecember, will include radio spots, dealerdisplays and interviews. Downchild re-leases on the Special label in Canada but,at time of writing, have no U.S. distribu-tion. They are currently represented onthe RPM charts with their single, "TellYour Mother" and their "Dancin" album.

FAMILY BROWN SETTINGSUMMER TOUR SCHEDULERCA's Family Brown are now putting to-gether a coast to coast road tour for thesummer of 1975. Their popularity in thecountry field; through their RCA record-ings as well as their own "Country Way"television show now syndicated through-out major market areas in Canada as wellas appearing on every major country tele-vision show in Canada, has prompted thetour.The Family have been together as a groupfor six years and have scored with a hitsingle for each of those years. They havealso chalked up impressive sales on theirfour album releases. Their most recentRPM Country Playlist single was "LoveIs Simple" which enjoyed eleven weeksof action in the Top 50 and is still an ac-tive seller and programming item.

PETRALIA BOWS ANOTHEROSHAWA JAMBOREE SERIESGeorge Petralia, affectionately known asthe Sicilian Cowboy, has decided to tryonce again with his Sunday eveningCountry Jamboree. The setting for theopening was Oshawa's Canadian LegionHall (Dec 1) at 8PM.Headlining the show will be Gaiety record-ing artist Carroll Baker. 5/11/74 years in this business. To see and hearfirst hand, guys like Dick Damron, BruceMiller and so many others is nothing lessthan exciting. To have a preview of somepotentially strong new acts who have yetto really establish themselves on the re-tail market is very useful.

It was interesting reading the reprint of yourFebruary 9,1974 editorial in the November2 issue of RPM. One statement that recurs in

many discussions in the "Sloping off ofCanadian hits in the U.S. charts since thepre -regulation days of 1969-70", (CHUMReport). Unfortunately, we don't haveaccurate comparative statistics, on a weekby week basis to support or deny this com-ment. However, Record World has 8% Cana-dian Content in their Top 100 this week and

the current Gavin Report mentions B.T.O.,Gino Vannelli, Gordon Lightfoot, De FrancoFamily, Paul Anka, Andy Kim, Fludd, Moon -

quake, Ron Nigrini, and the Guess Who, aswell as Prelude's version of Neil Young's"After The Goldrush". Agreed some ofthese are questionable as to whether or notthey ethically qualify as Canadian Content.Last January, 15% of the U.S. charts wereCanadian Content. I don't believe we aresuffering on the U.S. charts, if you look atthe charts over a long period of time. Itwould be interesting if anyone has keptaccurate statistics. I just don't believe we are

,slipping.In looking at the U.S. charts, we must remem-ber that Canada is turning out "pop" records,which don't have the opportunity to cross-over from the black or country charts. There-fore, we can't compete on equal terms withall the U.S. product, only their "pop"records, which usually have less than 50% ofthe Top 100. U.S. interest has never beenhigher, and this is evidenced by the increasednumber of U.S. releases on Canadian product.This can only lead to further penetration oftheir charts, and increased cash flow back

to the Canadian industry.As a Director of CAPAC, I know receiptsfor Canadian writers and publishers fromoutside Canada are dramatically increasingannually, and^this money goes back into the

industry here. We should look past U.S. chartsuccess to the rest of the world. Canadianartists such as Lightfoot, Andy Kim, Terrylacks and The Guess Who have never beenhotter in Europe and the rest of the worldthan they are now. In case you're wondering where the covercame from, it's "The Day The Earth StoodStill", Michael Rennie, 1951. Now aboutthe record. Ringo must be a nice guy, justlook at the friends he has, John Lennon,Elton John, Dr. John, Billy Preston, RobbieRobertson etc. etc. The result is, to say theleast, instrumentally superb. Coupled withRingo's vocals the result is often comedicbut always entertaining. Our favourite is thelighthearted "No No Song".THE WHOOdds And SodsMCA2126-JSort of "The Who's Greatest Non -Hits",Odds And Sods" is a collection of whatare apparently leftovers spanning the period1964-74. If these are non -hits, well ... justlisten to "Little Billy" and "Glow Girl".These two particularly are reminiscent of

the peak the powerful British rockers hitwith "Tommy". Although an unusual con-cept, "Odds And Sods" is an extraordinaryalbum with a wealth of previously un-heardmaterial which should delight listeners.NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGEBrujoColumbia PC33145-H

In the same vein, but lacking the classy har-monies of the Eagles, the new Riders of thePurple Sage give us here a collection ofditties which make up in enjoyability whatthey lack in surprises. About the onlything we can criticize about this one is therepetitive and annoying appearance of StevieWonder's name in every cdrner of the labeland jacket. Syreeta is Wonder's ex-wife andwhile it may be a nice gesture, Syreeta is quitecapable of making it on her own. "Your KissIs Sweet", "Just A Little Piece Of You" and"I Wanna Be By Your Side" should provethat.VICTOR PASOWISTYUkrainian FeastRCA KCL1-0069-NYou don't have to be Ukrainian to enjoyPasowisty, who has a knack of injectinga bit of the Red River country into hispolka and waltz stylings. Try on "ValleyRiver Polka", "Rosa Waltz" or "KalinaPolka" and "Dancing By The BrookPolka" - they could be straight out ofCape Breton. This is an instrumentalalbum with just plain down Manitobapotpourri ing.NED LANDRYFiddlin' And Other FunAfton AF 90142If you're into fiddlin', particularly Cana-dian fiddlin', there's none better thanNed Landry who comes up with almosta full house of original Landry material.The production took place at Audio At-lantic (Halifax) and was produced byGrant Kennedy. This is the type of toe-tappin' and ballady material that turnsMaritimers on and an instrumental albumthat's a must for those country program-mers looking for an all-round Saturdaynight record jamboree. From the lively"Bow & Strings" to the very sad "AnnieLaurie Two Step" that develops into aMari timer's wake, Landry doesn't havetoo much difficulty living up to hisbilling of "The master country fiddler".LINDA BROWNSing -A -Long With MeA&M SP 9012-WA&M have been working on the develop-ment of Linda Brown with her two singlereleases, "Empt Closets" and "Sing -A -LongWith Me", bringing her into proper focusbut still lacking that "perfect" song tocarry her into the hit arena. She camevery close with "Closets", a Carrol Fel-lows penning included here, and justmight carry it through with her newsingle, "Roll It On Homeward (My TruckDrivin' Man)" also contained on this set.Linda displays a great deal of confidenceon this particular cut and the arrangingand vocal and instrumental backing witha production credit by Joe Palaschukhas "quality" written all over it.

Whenwe have the answers to these questions wewill have a pattern of the state of the countrymusic industry today, and how to establisha development program to upgrade theindustry.Again starting at the top with the artist andmoving around back to the artist -1. How many artists work without amanager?2. How active are you as an artist in develop-ing and supporting fan clubs?3. Do you supply postcard photographs toautograph at concerts at your own expense?4. Do you insist on recording only your ownmusic rather than using other writing talentsavailable in Canada?5. How many times have you visited eitherthe Fan Fair or D.J. convention in Nashville,at your expense, to attend every concert andseriously study the style and performancesof the artist in concert?6. If you have a top 10 record in the UnitedStates are you willing to devote 3-6 monthsof your time there in concert to maintaincommunication with the public after yourrecord is no longer playlisted?

Moving on to managers, there are four mem-bers in the Country Music Association fromCanada.

1. How many managers attend the TalentBuyers Seminar to study what these buyersare using as a criteria for contracting artists?2. As a manager what is the depth of yourassociation in the industry?3. How many managers work on their own to

get maximum press coverage for their artists.4. How many managers are on a dailyworking basis with the record companies toco-ordinate promotion and artist tours?

There is always the argument among musicpeople as to what is HIT product. Some sayit's the words and music. Others believe itwas the artists interpretation.There is no qeustion the words and music andthe production are vital.1. How many writers and producers con-sistently buy the top 10 to top 20 recordsto study them, not only for content, but asan indication of trends?2. How many writers work through theirown publishing house rather than assigningtheir material to record company publish-ing affiliates or even large independents inNashville? Both of which have greater exper-tise and ability to place your product notonly in larger markets but to give recognitionto you as part of the Canadian CountryMusic scene.

I have said before the promotion area is themost praised and the most damned. There-fore, to make a beginning in the building ofa Country Music industry we must build astructure that adjusts itself to the answersfrom these questions.Starting with the record companies, becausethis is where the product is created -1. How many companies have a separatecountry music department including A&Rand promotion?2. How much of the A&R and promotionbudget is allocated to country music?3. How many country recordings are super-vised by non -country oriented A&R andproducer personnel?4. How many companies have a policyregarding country music that is concentrated

on release in the United States market andignores regional markets?In Canada there are approximately 200 sta-tions broadcasting country music. Yet thereare only 14 members of the Country MusicAssociation in the radio category.So we must ask ourselves how deeply involvedare the people in radio in the country musicenvironment?I have seen some press that says if we are tohave a Canadian Country Music industry weshould not copy.Over the years I travelled internationallyafter the war, I constantly ran into delega-tions of Japanese throughout Europe. Some-times even saw the same delegations in twodifferent companies in two countries.

I believe it is fundamental we establish anational identity but we must never ceaseto learn and broaden our professionalism.

And so the first question in this area ofpromotion we should ask, in order to builda base is -1. How many program directors and diskjockeys attend either Fan Fair or the RadioSeminar to exchange ideas with their peers?

2. How many program directors periodicallyfeature an entire program of interviews andmusic with a particular Canadian countrymusic artist?3. How many program directors devote oneprogram per month to only Canadian newreleases?4. How many program directors developcontests involving Canadian country artists?The printed word is equally important asradio in the development of a star system.We see this work very effectively in Quebec.There are magazines devoted to the enter -

tainment industry.In the entertainment section of the Frenchnewspapers there are constantly specialfeature articles on French Canadian artists.

1. What is necessary to convert Englishlanguage newspapers from 'a straight concertreview entertainment section to one whichfeatures also artist interviews?2. How difficult is it to place feature articlesin magazines on Canadian country artists?In the United States there are three majorcountry music magazines - Country MusicMagazine with an estimated circulation of200 thousand; Country Song Round -Up withan estimated 125 thousand and Music CityNews with approximately 50 thousand.We have had our Canadian magazines. Whydo they fail?

I previously attempted to point out thatwithout the total involvement of the distri-bution segment everything else is really fornaught.If we are to include the distribution segmentinto our plan, and we must, then we shouldknow the answers to these questions -

1. Do the rackjobbers and large retail chainshave buyers in their organizations who areinvolved or are knowledgeable of countryproduct?2. How many organizations or buyers aremembers of the retail category of the CountryMusic Association?3. What is the reception to co-op promotionon Canadian country music?4. How many dealers have a country musicsection in the back of the store and theproduct identification is only a dirty artistheader card?5. How many dealers feature Canadian newrelease country product in a prominent placein the store?6. How many dealers would feature a newCanadian country artist LP in the front ofthe store with in-store and window displayssimilar to contemporary product?7. How many dealers include country musicon their in-store turntables?And so, we could go on and add many ques-tions to our investigation. But we mustmake a beginning. Today is a step. Theremust be more.

Gary Buck and myself, along with the guid-ance of Harold Moon have had meetings asto how we can best serve as your representa-tives on the Country Music AssociationBoard of Directors to further CanadianCountry Music.We are enlisting the various Canadian mem-bers of CMA to join us in the formation ofvarious committees dedicated to the longrange goal of building a Canadian CountryMusic industry with a Canadian identity.We are planning a Radio Committee to deve-lop imaginative plans using the talents ofCanadian broadcasters and the resources ofthe Radio sector of the Country Music

Association. An important charter of thiscommittee will be to work with the recordcompanies to improve service and availabilityof promotion material.

Ir is in the plan to develop a Promotioncommittee to feed material to the press bothhere and the United States. It is our objec-tive to have a Canadian section in each ofthe three magazines I mentioned.We see no obstacle for 1975 to establish aCountry Music Month. On this committeewe would have representatives from Radio,Press, Television, Artists, Artists Managers,Retail and the Record Companies.We feel that if we start now, it is feasibleto have our first Canadian Fan Fair in thesummer of 1975. However, I would cautionthat we program this on a small scale and letus grow into the magnitude of Nashville inthe years ahead.

And it will grow. Remember over 15,000attended a Blue Grass Festival in Ontariolast summer.

I have given the problems in the form ofquestions that become our challenges. Letme close by quoting from some of theletters I have received.

"It is my belief that the best kind ofCanadian content record is in fact thecountry record. There are more good Cana-dian country records on the air, and onthe market, than any other kind of Canadianrecord."

Johnny Murphy - VOCM"The country music industry as it existsnow is a big moneymaker for Canada's bars,which keeps them content and gives theartist concerned a place to perform but thetranscription of bar music doesn't seem tohold the same interest when it's fed overthe airwaves. That is due largely to thelistener not being in a bar room atmosphereand not having a snoot full at the time -The transformation of Canada's CountryMusic Idiocy to Canada's Country MusicIndustry is long overdue."

"A LETTER TO WALT ORHOW TO GET INTO THERECORD BUSINESS WITHOUTREALLY TRYING"

It was the summer of 1957, while workingas a music director at a Winnipeg radio sta-tion, the phone rang in the library. (I didn'trate an office, in fact, I didn't rate a desk,I used the back half of the librarian's desk).The receptionist at the front office saidthere was a Mr. Orndorf from Minot, NorthDakota to see me. I didn't know a Mr. Orn-dorf but whoever he was I would not wanthim to know that I didn't rate a desk untilone became available from the Ad -Servicedepartment, so I walked out to receptionto meet him.

He introduced himself and explained thereason for his trip to Winnipeg. It seemsthat Gene Orndorf met a friend of mineat a restaurant in Minot, Gene had told myfriend about his ambition to start a recordcompany which he will name Canadian -American Records and how Winnipeg couldbe the Nashville of Canada because of allthe great talent there but he needed a goodA&R man who would be in charge of theCanadian recording sessions. My friend hadtold Gene Orndorf what a smart fellow Iwas, hence the trip to Winnipeg and hisoffer of a job with his company, but as yethe didn't have any money. As I consideredmyself to be a loyal employee of thestation, I should not be discussing prospectsof a new job, without pay, on companytime so I invited him out for coffee. Later,we had lunch together, then dinner at ourhouse but Gene ate very little becauseevery minute he talked, he became moreexcited about the company. By two o'clockin the morning I suggested it was late and Ihad a day's work to do tomorrow whichwould demand all my creative ability copy-ing Billboard and Cashbox charts and plan-ning our "Top Twenty". By two AM, Genehad made me vice-president, music directorand A&R man of Canadian -AmericanRecords Ltd. He would be president.This made two in the company so far but afriend of his in New York would join themerry group, so all we needed now was a fewbrochures explaining our plans. Thesebrochures were to sell us $100,000 worth ofshares and from then on everything wouldbe down hill coasting.Gene Orndorf was about five feet, two inchestall, and a little on the plump side. He dearlyloved his family; mother, father and brother.His second love was to have a record com-pany and nothing in the world would stophim from persuing this goal. His experiencein the record business was three months ofreading the trade papers which he hadmemorized and could quote items of inter-est from every issue, particularly the articlesdealing with the millions of dollars in therecording business.

I spent my summer holidays of 1958 inMinot, North Dakota going over the possi-bilities of recording in Winnipeg, wherethe head office would be, but the onlyexciting thing that happened was drivingdown the main street of the city where ateenager, on seeing our 1949 Jaguar Mark V,screamed "Scotland Yard".In the fall of 1958 strange things happened.With brochures that looked like they hadbeen printed in a dark basement on a 1920

The hand -lettered scroll, presented by CCBA President,Don Lawrie, reads as follows:"For his ability to recognize talent in peopleand his willingness to support and encouragethose he feels will enhance the broadcastingbusiness.

joined the late Ken Soble when he pur-chased CHML/Hamilton from SenatorHardy of Brockville. The Soble-Darlingteam became a major factor in Canadianbroadcasting until the demise of Mr. Soblein 1966. When CHML/CKDS was purchased

by Western Broadcasting Ltd. in July, 1971,Darling was appointed President and GeneralManager of Radio ML, and Vice -President(Ontario) of Western Broadcasting Co. Ltd.Among the innovations credited to Mr.Darling, were the on -the -spot broadcasts andinterviews with Dr. Dafoe when the Dionnequintuplets were born in 1934, which werefed coast -to -coast in Canada and the U.S.A.

With Soble, he was also responsible for theCHML Dream Home promo which built ahouse in seven days, and raised $250,000 forthe Winnipeg Flood Relief in 1952, thefirst Easter Seal broadcast from Maple LeafGardens in 1947, and the regular com-mencement of City Council broadcasts inHamilton in 1944. More recently he wasresponsible for the commencement of open -line programs on CHML (1953), the firsthelicopter traffic reports in Canada (1957),ana installation or tne rirst Kaaar weatnerUnit in Canada at CHML (1961).More important has been the assistance '

given to the careers of so many Canadianbroadcasters by Mr. Darling. The long listincludes such notables as Ed Preston, GordieTapp, Beverly Marsh, Tommy Hunter, GeorgeWilson, Daryl Wells and Tom Harvey.

CHMR/MOHAWK UNDERGOESSLIGHT FORMAT CHANGETwo recent CHMR surveys covering students'musical tastes, desirability for newscasts,and general acceptability of CHMR, haveresulted in a slight format change.The students' predilection for an average of3.5 newscasts per day have resulted in thestation continuing to offer 3 five-minutecasts, and 1 ten-minute cast over the TVmonitors throughout the school. Accepta-bility by the students of CHMR has increasedgreatly. The station presently broadcasts inthe two cafeterias from 7:30AM-7PM. Amajority of those surveyed wanted broad-

CFRB REBROADCASTSCHURCHILL TRIBUTESaturday, November 30, the 100th Anni-versary of the birth of Sir Winston Churchill,saw the rebroadcast of Jack Dennett'sclassic tribute to the late, great statesman,originally aired on CFRB/Toronto, January24th, 1965, the day of Churchill's death.Response to the 30 -minute feature, "A Trib-ute To Sir Winston Churchill", written bythe late John Collingwood Reade and nar-rated by Jack Dennett, was so overwhelmingthe provincial Ministry of Education presseda record of the piece for distribution to allthe schools in Ontario, and CFRB subsequent-ly also made a record of it.

The weekly pubs in the cafeteriashave live entertainment in one cafeteria, whileCHMR plays music inthe other from 7PM-1 AM on Wednesday night, as well as supply-ing entertainment for Basketball pubs,Nursing pubs, and other social happeningsas well.

Information compiled on music has resultedin the station taking the top end of AMmusic which applies to their audience, andintermixing that with album cuts and FM -style singles on their playlist, with the hoursbetween two and seven strictly for FM play,mostly from albums. With their rotationschedule, songs appearing on the playlistare guaranteed air -play at least once per day,and stay on the chart for a maximum ofabout 12 weeks, depending on how high thesong moves and how quickly it moves.

CBC-TV'S MURIEL SHERRINTOURS WESTERN CANADABecause of her belief in the importance ofincreased knowledge of the talent workingand living in all areas of the country, MurielSherrin, head of casting for CBC-TV's dramadepartment, recently made a tour of WesternCanada, attending performances at theVancouver Playhouse, Victoria's BastionTheatre, Regina's Globe Theatre, Edmon-ton's Citadel Theatre, and a rehearsal atthe Manitoba Theatre Centre. She was also intouch with the ACTRA representatives inthese cities.

Over the past two months members of thecasting department, in conjunction withtheir policy of seeing talent working, haveseen all theatrical productions and Canadianfilms that have been available in Toronto,Hamilton and vicinity. Mrs. Sherrin's trip,and others that will follow to other parts ofthe country, is an expansion of that program.Her heavy schedule gives an indication of hercommitment to finding, developing and usingCanadian talent.

Dave Tollington, formerly with The Pro-grammers, RPM, and now with CJ FM/Mon-treal, will be producing a regular Sundayevening series, "Live Music in Montreal", tobe aired at 9:30PM. The show will featureinformation, music, interviews, and com-ments on artists performing in Montreal inthe near future. In keeping with CJ FM'sformat, the artists will be primarily fromthe jazz, rock and folk scenes.

There have been several really good Canadiansingles released in the past couple of weeks,covering all fields of music. This opinionwould seem to be confirmed, at least in thecountry field, by the CFAC/Calgary addi-tions this week. The list consists of all Can -con numbers.

Bill McGee of CFCW/Camrose reports heavyrequest action on "Sally G" by Paul McCart-ney and Wings. He feels it should do well onthe charts.

Jeff Hyslop and Ruth Nichol welcomedspecial guest, Christine Anton, to "Oompapa"Sunday, December 1, on CTV. Ms. Anton,originally from Greece, now resides inVancouver. Broadway musical featured onthe show was "Carnival", the story of ayoung girl who joins the circus and falls inlove with a lonely puppeteer. "Oompapa"is produced by Paul Kimberley and directedby Michael Watt at CTV's Vancouveraffiliate, BCTV.Dave Jennings, Music Librarian at CHOK/Sarnia, feels Columbia will be missing agood bet if they don't pull "Soft, SweetFire" off the Mac Davis album, "Stop andSmell The Roses", and release it as a single.

New York. This Manitoba company waslaunched January 1st, 1959 ten years tooearly for the CRTC Canadian talent contentregulations.In Winnipeg we experimented in a studiowhich was an electronics workshop by day.By pushing a few work benches to the wallsand placing a couple of mikes in the centreof the room, it was transformed, into aworkshop -with -benches -pushed -to -the -walls by night or in a word a Nachtstudio-mitbenchesYERKEN. Starting this transfor-mation at 5PM while the engineer wenthome for a leisurly supper, we could be allset up for a recording session at the crackof 7PM if the equipment was in workingorder. The Engineer said he liked workingwith me because it was very relaxing forhim after a hard day with his electronicsbusiness. Sometimes during a session thephone would ring. After the telephoneconversation we would run through a good"take" while the phone conversation wasstill on the engineer's mind and the record-ing switch was in the "off" position. Thisworkshop was on the main floor at anapartment block so by 10PM the upstairstenants began to thump because they'd hadenough of the same song being repeated allevening. It was decided that we should tryrecording in New York.My next holidays from Winnipeg radio werespent in New York with Gene Orndorf. With$60,000 to spend it was easy to makeappointments with recording studios. Wehad a very short visit to the Cash Box office.When a man came to the front counter andasked what he could do for us, Gene askedhow we could arrange to have a recordlisted on the Cash Box charts. The mandidn't answer - just went back to his desk,so there didn't seem to be any point inpersuing this topic. We spent a full morningin a lawyer's office who's biggest problemwas finding a large enough desk underwhich to store payola money. He was avery nice chap who later sent a bill to theCanadian -American office for $10,000 forhis services with a letter stating that if Wedidn't pay he would sue the company,since sueing was now the popular thing to do.In New York Gene introduced me as anexpert on everything in the music businesswhich verified my previous thoughts thathe had either lost his marbles or was abusiness genius. I had read about geniusesbeing very close to having displaced marbles.I went along with his ravings about mebecause it was good for the ego and quitethe reverse from working for a PD whofigured I didn't rate an office desk.But Fun City time ended and it was back to ,

Winnipeg radio and the hit charts. Hitcharts was how I got my big change fromCKRC. I was music director there when thisoffer came from down the street. When Iwent for the interview I was introduced tothe PD who opened two trade papers and

asked me what was number one on thecharts, then number five, then number ten.With this vast knowledge at my finger tipsI was immediately hired for the job as musicdirector, which, much to my surprise didnot turn out to be the music directing Ihad successfully been doing at CKRC. Onthis new job my own choice of records wastaboo. Only if a record appeared on achart, did it have any value to programming,even if it was only number 56 in Forgetitville,Nebraska, that, at least, was consideredbetter for programming than any personalchoice I could make. I suggested a newrelease titled "Moon River" but this sugges-tion was squashed because it wasn't on achart (at that time). Mercer and Manciniwill be happy to know that we did eventuallyput their song on our playlist. In fact "MoonRiver" went on then off our charts threetimes, depending on which way the windwas blowing down south. Then one daymy new 17 year old assistant said a funny.It was after a get-together in the librarywith the PD, a jock and myself discussingour new playlist. When the PD and jockleft the library, Shirley, not looking upfrom her typewriter, remarked, "Imaginegrown men playing with teen-age records".It was at this point that I thought therecording business would be a little morechallenging. Our hit list really got fouledup when we made phone calls to recordshops for their top ten best sellers. Accord-ing to the stores a local Ukranian instru-mental was number one on the westernchart. But life was still worth living becauseI was moonlighting as a trumpet playerwith the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra atunion prices, almost as high as plumbers,with according to the tax department,placed me in the executive income bracketwhich by the present 1974 standards wouldamount to something close to the Federalminimum wage.It was a typical 20 below zero January,Saturday afternoon when two people cameto our house and said "Orndorf sent us!"A tall gentleman in his twenties and a girl inher teens. They were from Minot, N.D. andwere the manager and secretary for Canadian -American Records and where is the officeand where do we live. So all we neededwere places to live, an office and work forthe new staff. In time we found officespace, also received our first shipment of2,000 of a brand new 45s, out of which weeventually sold six copies at 42 cents eachwhich the secretary sent out by cab becausewe didn't have a delivery department.The next exciting day was when Genephoned from New York to let us knowthey had a nice office there with colorfultelephones and we were to change our blackphones to a sexy colour. After all we werein show biz. Strange as it may seem, estab-lished record distributors didn't want ourproduct. It was like trying to get Top 40

They hadbrought along 30 demos which had beensent from the New York office, and wouldI select one from the 30 which we wouldproduce and distribute and give the share-holders a run for their money, and whatare my suggestions about the Winnipegoperation. I told them to send the "stall"back home and close the office and let's

listen to the demos. The New York mana-ger thought we should go with the demo bythe two guitar players. After listening tofive 1959 screamer type demos I went alongwith the guitar thing by Santo and Johnnywho, I was told, couldn't read music. _

When you work for a radio station and youare. also vice-president of a record companythat gets itself a million seller like "Sleep-walk" you got big troubles. AnnouncerDoug Burrows had friends who coulddistribute from their house, so LaurelRecords was born. Record distributorsfrom other parts of Canada phoned to askfor distribution of C&A. Where werethey when we wanted them? What do youdo when you are an employee at a radiostation and your record company has sixrecords listed in the trade paper Hit charts

in an era of big payola stateside. Embarrassing.A group under Chad Allen cut two sides inMinneapolis and I put it on Canadian -American. When the local record outletsnamed it number four, that was too muchfor the PD I worked for. He told me it wasonly a local group and it looks bad havingthis on our charts when an employee ispart of the record deal.Gavin gave the disc a good plug in Billboardbut it wasn't enough to get our C&A NewYork manager to accept the contract forU.S. distribution so the poor chaps had tofind another record company. They becamethe "Guess Who". He also refused BobbyCurtola's first record, but our now establishedGrand Forks office came up with a big sur-prise. We were in the movie business. Themovie director, a young man about 25 ofslight build came to Winnipeg looking foran engine whistle which had to be about1890 vintage. He explained the movie plotwhich was based on a true historical Wis-consin story in which the Indians are theheroes instead of the U.S. calvary. The firstscene is to be a cloudy sky. Enter Indianwith bow and arrow. Indian lets go an arrowtowards the clouds. The clouds open uprevealing a blue sky and the arrow disappearsinto the bright blue yonder then the title"Hole in the Sky". My wife made enquiriesabout an engine whistle, and to our amaze-ment this item was available at a shipyardoffice in Selkirk, Manitoba. She drove the25 miles to pick up the whistle and alsopicked up a ticket from the highway policefor driving 18 miles an hour in a 15MPHzone which later was changed to 30MPH.The movie director drove back south, happywith his authentic piece of locomotive, andthat's the last we heard of the whistle andthe movie saga.

As Gene Orndorf had said "Everythingwould be downhill" and that's exactly theway Canadian -American was now heading.Although Gene had spent most of the share-holder's original investment, he was themost honest man I have ever met. It was hisgroundwork that set the scene for a success-ful but short-lived company which movedinto the quarter of a million dollar bracketbefore going the way of many small indepen-dent producers. His one big fault was thathe was ten years too early with his Canadianrecorded talent idea.Although C&A dissolved, I was left withenough office equipment and record exper-ience to start up again. This time I wouldplay the secret Agent 007 and no one wouldknow my record involvement. Everythingwas farmed out.After five years at record work on week-ends I sold the company, left radio and I'mhaving a great holiday. Soon it will be timeto get back to the drawing board. I don'tknow how many guys in Canada own recordcompanies and also work in radio but Iwould say they've got troubles unless theyhappen to own both. Herb Brittain
