Summer Assignment - English 4/4CP

Name:_____________________________________ English____,Period____Teacher:________________________________

Your written assignment is due in your English class on Friday, September 8th, 2017 and will count as 2 homework grades. There will be a 10 point deduction for every day late.

English 4, English 4CP Summer Reading Choices:

● Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen

The story follows Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British

Regency. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman. Mrs. Bennet is determined to find husbands for her five unmarried

daughters. While the eldest daughter, Jane, charms the rich and eligible Mr Bingley, Elizabeth clashes with Bingley’s haughty best friend, Mr.

Darcy. This unsteady courtship is at the heart of the novel; Elizabeth and Darcy are two lovers whose pride must be humbled and prejudices

dissolved before the novel can come to its splendid conclusion.

● The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas

An epic tale of suffering and revenge. Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantès is confined to the grim fortress of d’If.

There he learns of a treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to unearth the treasure and

use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration.

● Rebecca, Daphne DuMaurier

The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the handsome widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of

marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady's maid, she can barely believe her luck. It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate,

Manderly, that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife, Rebecca, will cast over their lives--presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens

to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.

● Ordinary People, Judith Guest

The Jarrets are a typical American family. Calvin is a determined, successful provider and Beth an organized, efficient wife. They had two sons,

Conrad and Buck, but now they have one. In this memorable, moving novel, Judith Guest takes the reader into their lives to share their

misunderstandings, pain...and ultimate healing.

● Brave New World, Aldous Huxley

"Community, Identity, Stability" is the motto of Aldous Huxley's utopian World State. Here everyone consumes daily grams of “soma” to fight

depression, babies are born in laboratories, and the most popular form of entertainment is a "Feelie," a movie that stimulates the senses of sight,

hearing, and touch. Though there is no violence and everyone is provided for, Bernard Marx feels something is missing and senses his relationship

with a young woman has the potential to be much more than the confines of their existence allow.

● The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson (nonfiction)

Author Erik Larson chronicles the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H.

Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor. Burnham's

challenge was immense; he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous "White City"

around which the fair was built. The activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes, who is believed to be responsible for dozens of murders around the time

of the fair, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the

fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims.

● Rosemary’s Baby, Ira Levin

Rosemary Woodhouse and her struggling actor husband Guy move into the Bramford, an old New York City apartment building with an ominous

reputation and mostly elderly residents. Neighbors Roman and Minnie Castavet soon come nosing around to welcome the Woodhouses to the

building, and despite Rosemary's reservations about their eccentricity and the weird noises that she keeps hearing, her husband takes a special

shine to them. Shortly after Guy lands a plum Broadway role, Rosemary becomes pregnant, and the Castavets start taking a special interest in her

welfare. As the sickened Rosemary becomes increasingly isolated, she begins to suspect that the Castavets' circle is not what it seems.

● A Time to Kill, John Grisham

John Grisham’s riveting story of retribution and justice. In this searing courtroom drama, best-selling author John Grisham probes the savage

depths of racial violence as he delivers a compelling tale of uncertain justice in a small southern town, Clanton, Mississippi. The life of a

ten-year-old girl is shattered by two drunken and remorseless young men. The mostly white town reacts with shock and horror at the inhuman

crime, until her Black father acquires an assault rifle and takes matters into his hands. For ten days, as burning crosses and the crack of sniper fire

spread through the streets of Clanton, the nation sits spellbound as young defense attorney Jake Brigance struggles to save his client's life… and

then his own.

● Into Thin Air, Jon Krakauer (nonfiction)

A bank of clouds was assembling on the not-so-distant horizon, but journalist-mountaineer Jon Krakauer, standing on the summit of Mt. Everest,

saw nothing that "suggested that a murderous storm was bearing down." He was wrong. The storm, which claimed five lives and left countless

more--including Krakauer's--in guilt-ridden disarray, would also provide the impetus for Into Thin Air, Krakauer's epic account of the May 1996

disaster.

● Teacher Man, Frank McCourt (nonfiction)

McCourt's book about how his thirty-year teaching career shaped his second act as a writer. Teacher Man is an urgent tribute to teachers

everywhere. In bold and spirited prose featuring his irreverent wit and compelling honesty, McCourt records the trials, triumphs and surprises he

faced in the classroom. Teacher Man shows McCourt developing his unparalleled ability to tell a great story as, five days a week, five periods per

day, he worked to gain the attention and respect of unruly or indifferent adolescents. For McCourt, storytelling itself is the source of salvation, and

in Teacher Man the journey to redemption -- and literary fame -- is an exhilarating adventure.

● How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents, Julia Alvarez The García sisters—Carla, Sandra, Yolanda, and Sofía—and their family must flee their home in the Dominican Republic after

their father’s role in an attempt to overthrow a tyrannical dictator is discovered. They arrive in New York City in 1960 to a life far removed from

their existence in the Caribbean. In the wild and wondrous and not always welcoming U.S.A., their parents try to hold on to their old ways, but the

girls try find new lives: by forgetting their Spanish, by straightening their hair and wearing fringed bell bottoms. For them, it is at once liberating

and excruciating to be caught between the old world and the new.

● The Metamorphosis, Peter Kuper (Graphic Novel)

A brilliant, darkly comic reimagining of Franz Kafka’s classic tale of family, alienation, and a giant bug. Kuper’s electric drawings—which merge

American cartooning with German expressionism—bring Kafka’s prose to vivid life, reviving the original story’s humor and poignancy in a way

that will surprise and delight readers of Kafka and graphic novels alike.

YOU MUST SUBMIT YOUR COLLEGE RESEARCH TO YOUR ENGLISH TEACHER ON OR BEFORE

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2017.

This assignment will count as your first test grade. COLLEGE QUESTIONNAIRE

Confused about how to choose the college that’s right for you? As a high school student, you may find it difficult to separate what you want from where your friends will be attending, or even from the desire to get away from home for the first time. Taking time now ensures that you’ll find a

school that meets your needs, and avoid costly and disappointing mistakes. Use this questionnaire to determine the living and learning environments best for you, then use the College Comparison Chart on the reverse side to rank your top contenders.

1. Majors should be enjoyable, challenging and help you reach your goals. Your favorite classes or activities can translate into majors and careers. List subjects that you would consider as a major. 2. Some colleges ask that you choose a secondary program, called a minor. This can complement your major or develop a completely separate interest. What subjects would you consider studying? 3. Of the subjects you are considering studying, which could translate into a career? Describe the subject and the potential career path. 4. What is your dream job? If possible, find someone locally who has that profession or is in a related field. E-mail or call him or her and ask about their education background, how they got where they are today, and their suggestions for someone pursuing that field of work.

❑ Sports (Varsity or intramural) ❑ Special interest clubs ❑ Paid employment ❑ Volunteer work ❑ Travel ❑ Performance/creative activities

7. What are your long-term goals? A four-year program can give you the opportunity to sample a variety of subjects and programs. Additionally, many professional fields require a four-year degree for entry. 8. What can you and your family afford? How much aid will you need from loans, grants or scholarships? 9. Do you plan to work during college? If so, how many hours and when? You may need a school that can accommodate a day job. 10. How important are living arrangements to your total experience? Would you prefer to stay on or off campus? Share space with a roommate or roommates, or have your own room?

College Search Websites

THE FOLLOWING SITES COULD BE HELPFUL IN FILLING OUT YOUR WORKSHEETS:

● www.collegetrends.org This is the website for PICS – a personal inventory of college styles. It analyzes a student’s personal style based on eight different

dimensions and gives the student insight on the types of colleges that may be a good match. You have to pay for the matching process! If you choose to

do so, take the survey, get results, and print them out. The printout will give further information when trying to choose among schools.

● www.princetonreview.com Go to the section for Counselor-O-Matic and complete the questionnaire. Have Counselor-O-Matic generate a list of schools

for you. Use this list to begin filling in a comparison worksheet of college options. Pay attention to the attributes of each school that are relevant criteria

for you. Things like size, location, faculty/student ratio may be important to you as well as Greek life or religious affiliation. Make sure the most

important attributes for you are listed on your worksheet. Remember each students’ worksheet will be different since each of you have different things

that you are looking for in a college Don’t forget to include information about the school's admission standards. That information will help you decide if

the school is considered a reach, safety or good fit.

● www.collegeview.com This site will link you to virtual tours of campuses and other information to aid you in narrowing down yourlist. While nothing can

take the place of actually visiting the school, sometimes having an Internet tour can help you identify questions you may have when you make your college

visits.

● A good site for helping you organize your thoughts and develop questions for your college visits is: www.nacac.com/p&s_steps.htmlThis is the Steps to

College part of the NACAC website. Under previous articles, scroll down to the one on college visits. Here you will find information to help you get the

most out of a visit and what parts of campus to see. The other articles here are also helpful, so read any others that may interest you.

● www.collegeboard.org Within this site are various sections dealing with college choice, financial aid, testing, and much more. A great resource for more information!

For students with special needs such as learning disabilities or ADD, try finding out about resources on campus to help you succeed. The following websites

offer guidelines in terms of what to look for and how to prepare for college if this is an issue for you:

● www.help4adhd.org/en/education/college/collegeissues - This is specifically for students with AD/HD and offer good questions to ask while on campus or

when searching for information.

● www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/postsecondary/ - The planning and selection part of this site offer additional help for students with learning disabilities.
