My Personal StoryLike most of us, I’ve always loved food. I remember eating an entire box of donuts in one sitting. However, about 11 years ago, my wonderful husband needed care by me while he went through 2 bouts of cancer. It was my privilege. However, I didn’t notice how much weight I was gaining, nutrition for myself was non-existent. I became very sick and intolerances to food became apparent. I was toxic!

After he passed away about 7 years ago, I had to look at myself and didn’t like what I saw. I was sick, sad, obese and felt very alone. It was time to get to work—and that is exactly what I did.

On the left is me 7 toxic years

and 60 pounds ago

On the right, this is me now. I’m not smiling

because I’m thinner. I’m

smiling because I’m happy again.

Definition of Toxins

Environmental toxins: poisonous substances that come from outside of the body and can be lumped into two categories:

Chemicals – plastics, pesticides, gasoline, cleaning supplies – substances that should not be in your body.

Metals – heavy metals e.g. mercury, lead

Page 6: Detox 101 by ie

How Toxic Are You?Unfortunately the question is no longer IF we are toxic. The real question is HOW toxic we are.

Everybody in this world has detectable level of toxins in the body.

Study has shown that every organism on the planet has detectable level of Teflon in the body.

287 chemicals were detected in umbilical cord blood of newborns. They include pesticides, consumer product ingredients, waste materials from burning coal, gasoline, or garbage.

o 180 of the 287 chemicals found are known to cause cancer in human or animals.

o 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system.

o 208 of those are shown to cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests.

Our babies are born with toxic substances in their bodies, even before being exposed to the toxins.

Sources of Environmental ToxinsCDC’s Fourth’s National Report on Human Exposure to Environment Chemicals showed that of the 212 chemicals tested, ALL are found in blood and urine of most Americans!

Six chemicals in particular, are found in virtually every person, and they were identified by the CDC as probable health hazards!

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PDEs)

Bisphenol A (BPA)

Perfluoro octanoic acid (PFOA)

Acrylamide

Mercury

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE)

Page 8: Detox 101 by ie

www.IntegrativeEssentials.com

Sources of Environmental Toxins Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PDEs)

Used as flame retardant in all building construction. It is found in EVERY building.

Builds up in human fat tissue, causing damage to the nervous system, liver, and kidney.

Studies also implicated PDEs in causing sexual dysfunction, thyroid problems, and brain disorder.

Bisphenol A (BPA)

Found in plastic products, can linings. Until recently, it was considered safe.

Primary human exposure through food packaging plastics

More than 90% of people tested by CDC were found to have BPA in their bodies

Because BPA is a reproduction, developmental and systemic toxicant in animal studies and is weakly estrogenic, there are questions about its potential impact particularly on children’s health and the environment. Even a small amount has been found to have impact on our reproductive system.

Page 9: Detox 101 by ie

Sources of Environmental Toxins Perfluoro octanoic acid (PFOA)

Better known as Teflon, used in many applications.

Used in non-stick cookware, stain-resistant clothing, certain food packaging and other heat-resistant products

Studies verify that PFOA contributes to infertility and other reproductive problems

Liver and immune system dysfunction are associated with the use of PFOAs.

Acrylamide

Chemical carcinogen formed when carbohydrates are cooked at high temperatures. Perpetual exposure is linked to cancer and neurological dysfunction.

Charred food, french fries, fried chicken, coffee

Plastics, cosmetics, and water treatment products

Page 10: Detox 101 by ie

Sources of Environmental Toxins Mercury

Most common exposure route is seafood

May cause permanent brain damage

Associated with many neurological problems

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) Gasoline additive

Not currently used in the US, but detected in most Americans’ bodies. Found in our water supply

Additional exposure from second hand cigarette smoke

Causes neurological and reproductive problems

Symptoms of Toxicity

We are all different genetically, so we react to toxins differently and at different dosage. Toxic exposure can manifest itself very differently in different people.

Common symptoms of excessive toxic burden can include:

Fatigue

Depression

Headaches

Cognitive problems: brain fog, memory problems

Neurological issues: balance problems, tremors

Page 12: Detox 101 by ie

Symptoms of ToxicitySome conditions and diseases are associated with excessive toxic burden. Toxins probably do not cause these conditions, but they affect the expression and symptoms of these diseases.

Allergy and asthma

Diabetes

Obesity

Chemical sensitivity (any adverse physical, mental, or emotional reaction to the presence of a chemical smell)

Fibromyalgia

Fertility problems and birth defects

Parkinson’s Disease

Bone marrow cancers – lymphomas, leukemia, multiple myeloma

Auto-immune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s, thyroiditis, etc.

Page 13: Detox 101 by ie

Symptoms of ToxicitySome studies have shown relationship between toxins and certain diseases:

Dioxin

In a study done in 2006, and published in the Environmental Health Perspectives, it showed the link between exposure to dioxins – which is a common toxin – and type II diabetes.

There is a direct correlation – the higher the exposure level, the higher the chances of having diabetes. Dioxin is found to promote type 2 diabetes in humans.

Dioxins are present in farm-raised fish, dairy products, and beef.

Symptoms of ToxicityBPA

In a study published in 2008, a strong relationship is found between urine concentrations of BPA and the incidence of CVD, type 2 diabetes, and liver-enzyme abnormalities in a representative sample of the adult US population.

BPA is found in a lot of packaging plastics for food

Symptoms of ToxicityHeavy metal

On the EPA website, it is stated that patients are routinely exposed to heavy metal toxins through food, ground water, industrial waste, and exposure to industrial environment. Lead have been found in water, and mercury in fish.

It is hypothesized that toxin exposure is linked to the following increase in disease rates:

Autism – 10x increase from early 80’s to 1996

Male birth defects – 2x increase from 1970 to 1993

Childhood asthma – 2x increase from 1982 to 1993

Acute lymphocytic leukemia – 62% increase in children from 1973 – 1999

Childhood brain cancer – 40% increase from 1973 – 1994

Preterm birth – 23% increase from mid 80s to 2002

Infertility – 5 to 10% of all couples studied

Birth defects – 3 to 5% of all babies

Sperm count – 1% decrease yearly from 1934 to 1996

So What Can We Do? Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins

Use foods and herbs to support body’s natural detoxification process

Detox regularly to reduce toxin storage

Page 17: Detox 101 by ie

Reduce ExposureFood and Drink

90% of our toxin exposure to certain chemicals such as PCBs and dioxins come from the food we eat

35% of all the foods we purchase in the US supermarkets have measurable pesticide residues which make their way into our body. Pesticides are designed to kill pests, and they are poison.

To reduce your exposure via pesticides and herbicides on your food, avoid eating fruits and vegetables grown conventionally on the Dirty Dozen List. Choose organic substitutes for these foods.

Page 18: Detox 101 by ie

www.IntegrativeEssentials.com

Reduce ExposureDirty Dozen – they have higher concentration of pesticides, herbicides and toxins because of the way they are grown and harvested. Celery

Peaches

Strawberries

Apples

Blueberries

Nectarines

Bell Peppers

Spinach

Cherries

Kale, collard, and other greens

Potatoes

Grapes (imported)

Page 19: Detox 101 by ie

Reduce ExposureThe Clean 15 – because the way they are grown and how they metabolize toxins, they generally don’t concentrate too much pesticides, herbicides and toxins. It is ok to eat conventionally grown.

Onions Avocado Sweet corn Pineapple Mangos Sweet peas Asparagus Kiwi Cabbage Eggplant Cantaloupe Watermelon Grapefruit Sweet potato Honeydew and other melons

Page 20: Detox 101 by ie

www.IntegrativeEssentials.com

Reduce ExposureAnimal foods – avoid conventionally raised. Conventionally raised meat and dairy products have consistently

been tested and found to have the highest levels of “hormone disrupting” chemicals in them

An estimated 25 million pounds of antibiotics are fed to livestock a year. The animal feed is also highly sprayed with chemicals as well

Animal feed contains high quantities of fat which allow for the storage of fat- soluble chemicals and toxins get into the meat

The chemicals are then passed on into the human digestive system and body when you eat the products

Page 21: Detox 101 by ie

Reduce Exposure

Conclusion: to reduce toxin exposure from food and drink:

Choose free range, hormone and antibiotic-free dairy, meat, and eggs whenever possible

Choose fresh, cold-water fish that is wild-caught instead of farm-raised fish

Take care to identify fish that potentially contain a high level of mercury

When possible eat organic produce that are listed on the Dirty Dozen list

Always wash all produce very well before eating, peeling or cooking

Page 22: Detox 101 by ie

Reduce Exposure

Other exposure routes

Phalates, another toxin, is found in a large majority of plastic packaging and can leach into the foods that you eat. Use stainless steel or glass drinking container, reduce or eliminate all

plastic utensils, plates and storage containers

Store food in non-plastic containers and bag when possible

Never microwave in plastic containers

Page 23: Detox 101 by ie

Use Cleansing Foods and Herbs

Foods that support the body’s natural cleansing process:

Raw foods

Leafy greens

Lemon juice in warm water first thing in the morning

Carrot and apple to support elimination through colon

Beet juice to support lymphatic detox

Herbs that support the body’s natural detox process:

Milk thistle to support liver

Dandelion to support kidney

Page 24: Detox 101 by ie

Detox Regularly, and SafelyDetoxification is a process during which you normalize the body’s natural ability to process and excrete toxins that are stored in our fat, while you temporarily reduce the amount of incoming toxins.

Detox done without proper supervision can backfire:

Severe detox symptoms including headache, lethargy, and skin issues

If the body cannot process the large amount of toxins that are suddenly released into the bloodstream, the toxins will get re-absorb into the fat tissue

If you are looking to start a weight loss program, it’s best to go through a supervised detox program so fewer problems will arise when toxins are released as fat cells are burned off.

Page 25: Detox 101 by ie

Detox Regularly, and Safely

A safe detox protocol should:

• Have a gradual approach that can minimize withdrawal, sudden toxin release, and increase success rate

• Have enough calorie intake to support the body’s detoxification and elimination process

• Address issues of addiction prior to start of the program
