Preface

Shimla is a historic hill top city and capital of the Himachal Pradesh. It has an average altitude

of 2,206 meters above mean sea level. There are no water bodies near the main city and the

closest river, the Sutlej, is about 21 km away. Due to water scarcity, people faced hardship in

getting drinking water, thus there is a water crisis in the city.

Despite acute water scarcity, water infrastructure is too old. Most of the distribution pipelines

are laid during British era, as a result the Non-revenue water (NRW) level is high and there is

no consumer satisfaction. With an aim of increasing drinking water availability to the city and

improving service level, Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) has a planned a comprehensive

water supply project. Government of Himachal Pradesh (GoHP) has incorporated this scheme

in AMRUT program aided by the World Bank. To begin with, a 24x7 water supply scheme has

been suggested in three Demo areas of Sanjauli1, Sanjauli2 and Totu. Design of distribution

system of these demo areas has been submitted.

As the pressures in the pipelines are very high, it is necessary to provide strong pipes to sustain

the pressures. Hence, design of pipe thickness for transmission mains have been carried out

which is submitted in this report.

Design Procedure

Design of M.S. Pipe for Internal Pressure

The thickness of pipe shell is required to be checked to withstand internal pressures. The

internal pressure for which the pipe thickness is required to be checked which should be the

maximum of the pressure for the three conditions given below:

1. 1.5 times working pressure

2. 1.5 times maximum static pressure

3. Maximum operating pressure plus pressure due to water hammer.

Field Conditions

Following field conditions are considered:

• Since flow in entire distribution pipe network is by gravity, water hammer pressure is

not considered. Hence, only above conditions of (1) 1.5 times working pressure and (2)

1.5 times maximum static pressure are considered and the maximum pressure shall be

the maximum of these two conditions.

• It is assumed that the pipelines are laid above ground level on RCC chairs. Design of

the chairs shall be such that the deflection shall not be more than the permissible value.

It is strongly suggested that the spacing between the two chairs should not be more than

5m. Proper expansion joints shall be provided.

Analysis of Results

From pipe results provided in Volume II, maximum pressure acting on each pipe in demo zone

is known which is considered in the design. These pressure are increased to 1.5 times as per

above conditions of internal pressure, so the maximum pressure for which pipes are to be

designed is computed.

The analysis is made for two cases, (i) pipes with Pressure reducing Valves (PRVs) and (ii)

pipes without PRVs. The pressures will be maximum for the demand of the year 2020 and

without considering the peak factor. Hence, analysis is carried out for the two cases- (a) Pipe

results with PRVs, with demand of 2020 and without peak factor of 3 and (b) Pipe results

without PRVs with demand of 2020 and without peak factor of 3. The two tables with results

are shown in Appendix. The pipe material, diameter and thickness are shown in Table (b).

Procedure

(1)Minimum Thickness:

As per IS 3589 : 2001, Edition 4.2, the minimum thickness of the M.S. Pipe line shall not be

less than the thickness’’, worked out by the formula given below.

2

PDT

S=

Where:

P = Internal design pressure in Mpa

D = Diameter of pipe in mm (O.D.)

S = axfxe

a = Design factor

= 0.6 for working pressure

= 0.9 for test pressure

f = minimum yield stress in MPa

= 235 MPa for Fe 410

e = Weld efficiency

= 0.8 to 0.9

Corrosion Allowance: Corrosion Allowance of 1.5 mm has been considered in the design.

Check for minimum wall thickness: If D/t ratio is less than 300, minimum wall thickness

computed as above is correct.

(2)Hydraulic Pressure Test (Factory Test)

As per IS 3589, each pipe shall be hydraulically tested at the manufacturer’s works before the

pipe is coated, wrapped and lined. The maximum test pressure to be limited to 5 MPa wherever

applicable.

(3)Vacuum Design:-

Under certain conditions of operations, water may get removed from some section of pipeline

faster than it can be supplied from the source. Such condition may occur as a result of valve

operation (sudden full opening of scour valve) or draining of pipe /rupture of pipe at a point at

low level. If at such locations the pipe is exposed to atmosphere and the thickness of the pipe

is small, air must be admitted into the pipe to prevent an excessive reduction of the internal

pressure and the subsequent collapse of the pipe throughout in portion of its length because of

external atmospheric pressure.

Page 6: Detailed Design Report - SJPNL...Detailed Design Report Hydraulic Design & Network modelling for Shimla Water Supply, World Bank Program Volume V: Pipe Thickness of Transmission and

6

The resistance of an exposed pipe to vacuum pressure depends on thickness to diameter ratio.

As per American Practice (Errata of M11 Code), the critical collapsing pressure of mild steel

pipe can be calculated as under: 3

66,000,000c

tP

d

=

Where t = thickness in inch

And d = diameter in inch

Pc= Collapse pressure in psi

The pressure obtained shall be converted to kg/cm2 by the relationship

1 psi = 0.070307 Kg/cm2

Also as per I.S. 5822 – 1970, the pipe thickness shall be strong enough to withstand partial

vacuum corresponding to two third of the atmospheric pressure, which may occur with in the

pipe. This means the Pc shall be greater than 0.34 kg/cm2.

Water Hammer Pressure is given by:

0.5

1425 Pr ( )

1

WHWater Hammer essure PKD

Et

= +

Where K= Bulk modulus of water = 2.07E+08 Kg/m2

D = Pipe dimeter in mm = 2.07E+10 Kg/m2

E = Modulus of elasticity of pipe material=

t = Pipe thickness in mm

(4)Design Scenario

As terrain is hilly, huge pressures are encountered. Pipe thickness shall be strong enough to

withstand pressure at worst condition. Such condition shall be when the pipes are subjected to

the demand of the year 2020 and the PRv are inactive (fully open). Hence, the thickness of

pipes have been computed for this condition. Summary is shown in Table 1 and computation

are shown in Table 2 in Appendix.
