Situated in South Taiwan, Kaohsiung is home to 2.7 million inhabitants, and is second in size to Taipei, the capital city to the north.

With its relatively constant warm weather, outdoor activities can be enjoyed practically all year round. Its coastal location gives

Kaohsiung magnificent ocean and harbor views such as those from Xinguang Ferry Wharf, True Love Ferry Pier and No.13 Honorary

Pier and Fishermen’s Wharf. Boats are also a big part of the city’s tourism; take a ride on the Cijin Ferry or the Love Boat on the

Love River to enjoy subtropical exotic surroundings. History lovers will enjoy the Confucian, Yuanheng Buddhist and Cijin Tien Hou

temples, the former British Consulate at Dagou, Cihou Fort, Syongjhen North Gate and Cihou Lighthouse among touristic sites.

Since its creation in the 17th century, Kaohsiung has grown from a small trading village into the political, economic, transportation,

manufacturing, refining, shipbuilding and industrial center of southern Taiwan.

Cultural NotesLocated across the Taiwan Strait from China, Taiwan’s population consists

mostly of Han Chinese individuals who speak three dialects of Chinese:

Taiwanese, Hakka or Mandarin. Traditional Confucian values, including respect

for elders, piety and worship, education and hard work, remain strong among the

culture of the people. The Taiwanese value harmony and believe in working for

the collective good, treating others with respect and dignity.

Interactions in Taiwan are a formal process and getting it right can significantly

help build your “Guanxi” or personal connections. Greetings are formal, and the

oldest person in the group should always be greeted first. Handshakes are the

most common form of greetings with foreigners; some Taiwanese look toward

the ground when greeting someone as a sign of respect. When meeting someone

for the first time, and until they tell you to do otherwise, address the person by

their academic, professional or honorific title followed by their surname.

Business cards are also important in Taiwanese culture. The way you handle

someone’s business card shows the value you place on the relationship.

Business cards are exchanged using both hands — be sure that your business

card is facing the recipient. After receiving a business card, always place it in

your shirt or jacket pocket, but never in a pants pocket. Treat this exchange with

respect and watch your Guanxi grow during your visit!

Night Markets in KaohsiungTaiwan’s night markets are an inherent part of the island’s culture and are a must-

see during your trip to Kaohsiung. Soak up the distinctive atmosphere, sample

a variety of delicious food and walk away happy and full from exploring the best

Taiwanese food made with the freshest ingredients right in front of you!

Kaohsiung’s most loved and popular night markets include the Guanhua, Liouhe,

Rueifeng, Jhongsiao and Singjhong night markets. Each market has its own

appeal, whether it’s the affordable prices, range of dishes offered or the friendly

atmosphere that welcomes both tourists and locals alike.

One of the most popular dishes in the night markets is stinky tofu. You will

definitely smell it before you see it, but don’t let the smell put you off, as its

surprisingly tasty flavor has converted many skeptical tourists into devoted fans.

Made from a brine of fermented milk, vegetables and meat, stinky tofu comes in

many forms including deep fried, spicy, soft and stinky tofu shashlik; the latter of

which is popular with first-time tasters.

There’s no end to the amount of amazing food that can be found in Kaohsiung,

and all over Taiwan. It’s possible to spend days or even weeks just sampling all

of the special foods that Taiwan has become so famous for. If you’re a foodie,

you’ll instantly fall in love with this little island, and be blown away by the quality,

richness and taste of the local cuisine.

Pier-2 Art CenterOnce an abandoned and forgotten warehouse in an old

industrial region of the city, Pier-2 Art Center was created

by a group of artists who aimed to inject creativity and

inspiration into the area by establishing a place where both

tourists and locals can enjoy modern fine art. Beginning

in 2006, Pier-2 Art Center has showcased a variety of

exhibitions and festivals celebrating art, culture, dance and

music. The property grounds are also full of sculptures,

statues and decorated buildings. Pier-2 Art Center is widely

known as the headquarters for artistic development in

southern Taiwan.

Shoushan (Monkey Mountain)Located in the Gushan District and north of Kaohsiung

Harbor, “Shoushan” or Monkey Mountain can be seen

bordering the western side of the city creating a green wall

between Kaohsiung and the Taiwan Strait. This biological

preserve offers splendid views and hiking trails for people

of all ages. Monkey Mountain gained its nickname due

to the abundance of Formosan Rock Macaques, a rare

monkey only found in Taiwan in the area; over 100 bird

species can also be spotted. On your way to the top of

the mountain, various tea stations are available to stop at

where you can relax and consume local food and drink

while enjoying the view.

Old City of Zuoying (Old Fongshan City)Built during the Qing dynasty, the Old City of Zuoying

was the first city in Taiwan fortified by a defensive wall.

Surrounded by Turtle Mountain and Snake Mountain, this

city has several temples for visitors to explore. Three of

the four gates, which were used to enter the city, still stand

and can be found around the city. The North Gate features

two door god sculptures of Shentu and Yulei; door gods

are used to keep evil spirits from entering. The South Gate

sits in the center of a traffic circle, while visitors can find

a monument in place for the West Gate. The East Gate

is covered in vines and still connects to a portion of the

original wall of the city.

Lotus PondSituated on the eastern side of Zuoying District in

Kaohsiung, Lotus Pond has been a popular destination to

visit since the Qing dynasty and well known for the lotus

plants inhabiting the property and at least 20 temples that

surround the shoreline. Visitors can enjoy exploring the Old

Wall of Fengshan and a variety of pavilions and pagodas.

The temple of Enlightenment is the largest temple in

the area featuring traditional woodcarvings, while the

Confucius Temple, completed in 1976, is the largest one of

its kind in Taiwan. Amongst the temples, there are several

shops and restaurants to discover.

Former British Consulate at TakaoLocated on a hilltop overlooking Sizihwan and the

Kaohsiung harbor, the former British Consulate was

constructed in 1865 displaying the unique British colonial

style architecture with red-bricked archways. After

undergoing two major destructions in its lifetime, including

a bombing and a typhoon, the Kaohsiung City Government

classified the consulate as a historic site. Today, visitors

can explore a variety of displays showcasing historical

documents, photographs and cultural items. Other

nearby attractions in clued Shihba Wanggong Temple,

Shaochuantou Park and Cape café.
