DDPS v2Common Office Questions and Challenges

Can I use DDPS to deliver Office-centric deployment guidance? How to identify Office-only engagementsHow do I fulfill a DDPS engagement covering Office only? How do I fulfill the deliverables requirements for an Office-centric DDPS engagement?

Desktop Deployment Planning Service

Office Only DDPSOffice only baseline

Many organizations may wish to focus the bulk of a DDPS engagement on issues related to deploying a standardized configuration of 2007 Office. This guide serves as an appendix to the core DDPS collateral and identifies recommended strategies for delivering an Office focused DDPS session. It remains the responsibility of the delivery consultant to review the DDPS Delivery Guide for complete guidance on this topic.

This is not a session on how to do Office with XP.Office on XP or Vista requires the same PLAN / BUILD / DEPLOY / OPERATE approach core to DDPS engagements

Desktop Deployment Planning Service

Office only DDPSIdentifying Office-only engagements

Like any other DDPS, the delivery consultant and/or the partner account team for the customer should conduct a PreFlight Briefing via conference call 1-2 weeks before the anticipated kick-off of the DDPS.It will be at this point that you will have identified (or confirmed) that the customer will require extra emphasis on Office 2007 deployment.Key indicators may include the following:

Already deployed their base OS with Office 2003 and desire to follow up with Office 2007 deploymentMay want to upgrade Office 2007 to Office 2007 SP1May want to upgrade older versions of Office in placeMay want to standardize unsanctioned configurations or componentsWant to standardize both their Modern Desktops (Vista + Office 2007) and their legacy desktops (2000/XP + older versions of Office) on a single Office Platform

Desktop Deployment Planning Service

Office only DDPSSample on-site agenda

Like any other DDPS, the delivery consultant and/or the partner account team for the customer plan to follow roughly the traditional DDPS agenda with a focus on Office

In general a reduced focus on imaging or deployment technologies

Deployment Overview (optional)–may need to revisit the Deployment Overview deck at a more technical level. Again, this should be 1-2 slides on each area of the BDD wheel.

Core Infrastructure –Your goal with this deck is to understand what the customer has in place now, what could be used and develops an action plan or recommendations. This may include adjustments to AD, DNS, DHCP, WINS, SMS, security, etc. Anything that would block or impede successful targeting of an Office package.Application Compatibility – focus the deck on the core inventory features of ACT. Namely deployed versions of Your goal with this deck is to understand what they have deployed currently both in terms of versions of Office and any integrated applications. While ACT doesn’t necessarily show dependencies or call out Office add-ins, having a manifest simplifies identification.

Office only DDPSArchitectural Design Session (sample)

Imaging – focus the deck and the discussions of options and benefits of adding Office 2007 to their core image. Be sure to highlight BDDW/OCT integration here. Your goal with this deck is to ensure that the customer understands how Office-only deployments should be synchronized with core imaging processes.USMT – this topic area with respect to Office should focus on the fact that USMT already knows how to handle most aspects of an Office to Office deployment. Your goal here is to help the customer understand and identify any Office settings that may need to be persisted not only for Office only deployment but for their future migrations and refresh scenarios.

Office only DDPSArchitectural Design Session (sample)

Packaging – most likely won’t be needed unless there are Office add-ins which require packaging or can’t be chained as part of an Office Install. Your goal here is to help identify how Office will be deployed (SMS, GPO, logon script, 3rd party SWD). Each of these solutions may have different requirements in terms of flags, and command strings.SoftGrid – can possibly address key co-existence and training issues for the customer. Discuss how SoftGrid can be used to deploy either Office 2007 or older versions of Office for side-by-side requirements
