My initial idea was to blend and merge the two colours together on the can, Whilst attempting this in Photoshop I created this merge effect which I was aiming for but the colours were to bold and solid.I made sure that the colours matched the original Irn-Bru cans by importing an image and extracting the colours from that image.

I then wanted to make my can design look 3D so I gave the colours a ‘multiply’ effect which then showed the original template and shading which made it look 3D.I also wanted my design to look more modern so I took away the merging effect.

When I first added the text I made each part a different colour to make it look different and interesting but I didn’t like that way I had positioned the words ‘IRN-BRU’ because it looked too modern and boring.I wanted to make sure that my text was big and bold to make it stand out.

I then changed the position and the angle of the words to make it look more interesting, I also added a more 3D effect by cutting off the edges of the words to make it look like it was wrapped around the can.I also changed the colour of the ‘32’ to make it match with the theme of my design.

My final design turned out with the writing a little bigger and more narrow, it is also changed to white to make it look brighter and eye-catching.I am happy with my finished design, If I was to change anything it would be the 3D effect of making the text look more like its wrapped.

Idea 1: Bold

Page 4: Design progress

This is an image of my first design idea which was initially just a Scottish flag covering the can.on this idea I kept the original colours of the image I had taken from the internet and just added a simple bold narrow font for the front, I warped the text to ensure that the design looked 3D and as if it were wrapping around the can.

After tweaking parts of the design I wanted to experiment with colours and which parts of the can were to be covered after this is had changed the colour of the text to an orange which ties in with the original colours of Irn-Bru and I took the top of the flag off so that it wasn’t covering the whole can.

I then decided that I liked the whole can to be covered to ensure that it didn’t look odd, I also changed the font back to black but still wanted the orang colour on the design too so I changed the centre of the flag to the orange colour and changed the blue parts to the blue which matched the original Irn-Bru colours instead of it being dark.

This is an image of my final finished design which I am happy with.I thought that it looked bare so added a quick slogan at the bottom but I may change the slogan throughout my work progress. If I could change one thing about it I would change how accurate the orange matches up with the blue outline.

This is my final finished design which I am happy with.I used the smudge tool on Photoshop to make the outer edge of the burn marks look realistic. Although I would like to change a lot on it I think that it is a good design. The main thing I would like to change is to make the burn marks look more realistic.

Before I made the mind maps for my initial ideas I quickly wrote down the idea of having an Irn-Bru can I had designed burning through the design of an existing can, I quickly made this design of the modern Irn-Bru can burning through a Coca cola can to give me an idea of what I wanted my final design to look like.

The idea for this design came from a Pepsi advert I had comeacross on the internet whilst Researching, which shows a PepsiCan dressed as a Coca-Cola can.

Magazine advert design

Idea 1: Make mine a bru

The initial idea for my first magazine advert was to use this old iconic war poster and edit it a little to make it look like an Irn-Bru advert. I added my main slogan to the speech bubble at the top and the second slogan to the bottom, I also added the product name and website to the bottom but I thought it looked too bare.

I then decided to add my irn-bru can design as if it were a tattoo so that the customer and the audience knew which product the advert was promoting.Adding this also allowed me to take away the bare look on the advert.

To make the tattoo effect look more realistic I then added more tattoo designs on the womans arms, to di this I had to use the burn tool to emphasize the arms and distort the tattoo designs so they looked like they were on the skin.

My second magazine advert didn’t have any development because I had drawn it out already and stuck to the original design and ideas.I wanted to keep the Scottish theme so used a very stereotypical Scottish photograph which also keeps in with the humour theme I have throughout my work.It took a while to edit this in Photoshop to how I wanted it because of the way the photograph had been taken in the first place, to make it look like the man was holding the can of Irn-Bru I had to cut out parts of his hand and create another layer for them on top of the can.I wanted to keep the simple font and simple design I had done with my other pieces of work and my other poster by just adding the same text I had on the first poster at the top and on the bottom, I think this worked well because it keeps a consistent theme and its easy to read.

Web banner design

Page 10: Design progress

The initial idea for my design was to incorporate the two main irn-bru colours for my web banner, the first thing I did was cut the banner in half and made one half an orange colour and the other half I made a blue colour.

I then decided that I wanted the colours to look more interesting and put them together in a different way, I also wanted to keep in with the theme of the drink so I used a water drip effect and made it orange as to still include the colours.

After making my posters and packaging designs I wanted to keep the theme of using the slogan ‘make mine a bru’ to do this I added the slogan in the same size and font from the posters I had already made.

I still thought that my banner looked bare so I added a small image of the irn-bru packaging I had created to make sure that the customer knew what I was advertising and to ensure that I had no bare place.

Idea 1: Liquid drip

Page 11: Design progress

My frame animation idea has been developed from the first banner I had made, I then looked at other web and developed my ideas and guidelines from there.

The first frame consists of the Irn-Bru blue on a blank frame, my own design of the Irn-Bru 32 can then appears on the blue followed by the slogan.

I still wanted to keep the orange coloured water dripping but instead of leaving it in the background I wanted to use it as a way to get rid of the text and add more. With this idea in mind I made the water drip move down the banner until it had covered the whole thing, I then let it pause for a few seconds before letting the words ‘Irn-Bru 32’ appear in white in the same font as before but centred a little and in a different colour.

I think that this banner worked really well because it is simple but easy to read and gets the message across, it is also not too messy or crowded, I have also made sure that I have not left any bare space on the banner.

Idea 2: Liquid drip gif

Idea 3: Mario gif

For my third web banner idea I wanted to change the way it would be laid out on the web page so I decided the make a skyscraper banner to be placed on the side of a webpage.I made a fame animation/gif of the game character Mario as if the game were being played at the side of the page, to start with I wasn’t going to make it as long and it was going to finish with 8 frames until I decided to add more to it and have Mario walk into another scene where he would retrieve the irn-bru can, I made everything similar to the game including the writing and the graphics. When Mario got the can I made his outfit change to the colours of the can as if he had been given a power or a level up, I then added the words ‘level up! With irn-bru 32’ on each frame in the Mario font.
