A COMFORTABLE NESTThrough a remodel to fill it with light and a thoughtful redecora-tion of treasured mementos, the Herritts’ home has evolved from dated domicile into a peaceful, comfortable joy.

FEATURESMODERNMARVELBuilt fresh from the ground up with a green outlook, ap-preciation for technology and exacting attention to detail, the contemporary Keoppel home definitely stands out … in the best possible way.

LIVING SMALLAlthough diminutive enough to fit into most suburban bed-rooms, the McCullocks have put plenty of thought and care into this aluminum camper; through downsizing, simplify-ing and remembering what’s important, they’ve made it home sweet home.

SETTING THE TABLEInspired by the warm tones of autumn and the crisp shades of freshly fallen snow, this duo of suggestions will help deck out the dining table in seasonal splendor.

DREAMING OFA BRIGHT CHRISTMASThe Shingleton home is a fantastic blend of functional-ity and fun all year, but their kid-friendly design philoso-phy shines especially brightly during the holidays. Comfort and good cheer live here.

fall 2014ONE OF OUR FAVORITE PARTS OF PUT-TING TOGETHER THIS MAGAZINE is stepping into the spaces that will be fea-tured within the pages. Seeing the myriad ways people surround themselves with comfort and style never fails to amaze and encourage us, and we are filled with a re-newed sense of purpose. Making a place to feel like home is one of the most fulfill-ing aspects of life, and we hope by taking you inside these residences you feel the same creative stirrings. We appreciate good design in its many forms, from modern and minimalist to traditionally opulent, and take something away from each encounter. Even in a loca-tion completely outside the realm of our known comfort zones, we find inspiration. Such is the case with the McCullock fam-ily’s abode, a vintage aluminum camper on a picturesque parcel of land just out-side of the metro. It is hard to conceive of living in such a small footprint, let alone happily relishing the change, but we’d be lying if we didn’t admit to thinking about cleaning out our closets and purging all the clutter from our garages and our lives after our visit there. A simplified exist-ence holds an undeniable appeal in to-day’s hectic world. Another serene location is captured in the renovated 1930s traditional home of Jana and David Herritt. Jana’s impeccable taste in furnishings and design is evident in every square inch. It is at once comfort-able and welcoming without sacrificing grand style. Shyon Keoppel has nearly single-hand-edly accomplished the creation of a unique construction that anyone would gladly occupy. With an open concept first floor, stunning outdoor living and modern fin-ishes throughout, it is a feast for the eyes. Speaking of a feast, Rachel and Simon Shingleton’s house is just that, with a full helping of color. It’s no wonder: Rachel has designed her surroundings to reflect her

talent and work as a stationery and prod-uct designer. Already incredibly colorful as an everyday rule, we got a special treat by seeing it during the holidays when the home was nothing less than a confection. In addition to these beautiful living spaces, we’ve also gathered together our recommendations for books to read, par-ties to throw and baubles and bits to add the perfect touch to your home. Thanks for allowing us to inspire you!

MINIMALISM IS A LEGITIMATE DESIGN CHOICE, and it can look seriously impressive if the home-owner is willing to make it work. But if you’re committed to that crisp, sleek look with a minimum amount of décor … this might not be the book for you. “Heirloom Modern” is a collab-orative effort between sisters Hollis-ter and Porter Hovey; while the title might sound like a contradiction in terms, it refers to a decorative phi-losophy centered around objects of genuine personal meaning, espe-cially those inherited pieces that tell a bit of family story, or which might tell future generations a bit about the present. The introduction, amid a flood of family photos (the better to contextualize the keepsakes from the past that fill the Hoveys’ own home) ends on something of a mis-sion statement: “For the last seven years, Porter and I have lived together in a loft in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, that’s filled with the mirrors, knick-knacks, pillows and paintings that our parents started with in New York, along with … countless other pieces. We’ve added our own style to the mix, reinterpreting the les-sons our parents taught us through a modern lens with a different set of influences and experiences. “Our home has become a living autobiography, tracing our family’s roots and telling the story of our childhoods and our experiences as adults. If we have our own children someday, we hope that they will love these pieces as we do – not for any kind of monetary value, but because of the memories and stories they relay. To us, that’s ‘heirloom’ in the most modern sense.”

In its 200 or so pages, “Heir-loom Modern” features 14 homes of the authors’ friends and relations, each installment with its own story and amusingly annotated captions – from a grandmother’s steamer trunk to a bounced check from Courtney Love Cobain. The book is a paean to owning and display-ing stuff, but stuff that has emotions attached. It’s not a question of col-lecting things that match, but of ac-cumulating things that matter to the homeowner. Memorabilia is fine, as long as it’s actually memorable. It’s not a how-to manual for deco-rating, since your individual trea-sures and trinkets will naturally be at least a little bit different than anyone else’s. Think of it more as a series of case studies, depicting how the principle of visually celebrat-ing life’s cavalcade of special events and memories can apply to multiple households. If our lives are a se-ries of individual moments, there’s something to be said for keeping some of the cooler ones around.

IF YOU HAVE ANY PRECONCEIVED IDEAS THAT SUCCESS BELONGS TO THE WEATHERED VETERANS OF COMMERCE, everything about Oklahoma City entrepreneur Shyon Keoppel will dispel that mindset. While most of his 18-year-old friends were buying subwoofers for their cars, Shyon was buying homes and remodeling them for resale. Now firmly established his career (and just in his mid-20s), he is green only in the context of his commitment to con-servation and eco-friendly features in the homes he builds or remodels through his home construction services business. With the collaboration of his team and a few other local com-panies, Shyon served as the designer, project manager and main contractor during the construction of his stunning modern resi-dence in northwest Oklahoma City. Conspicuously “not like the others,” Shyon’s two-story home stands out as a contemporary beauty in a neighborhood that, despite being ideally located, teeters between age and neglect. He owns other properties around his home and plans to revital-ize the surroundings by remodeling or replacing several der-elict properties.

Left: As he describes his hands-on role in designing and building the home, Shyon mentions the many Jetson-esque features of a smart house, all the while navigat-ing his iPhone to adjust the thermostat and turn on TVs, security cameras and, at sunset, the pool lighting. Keoppel’s familiarity with Control4 Home Automation technology began innocently enough. “I called A-Team Audio Video to install a $300 doorbell, and now, here I am. I’ll say this, it would be hard to live without the (automation) system now.” One of his favorite additions is the customized ceiling fan (from supplier Big Ass Fans), suspended over the front living area. A U-panel metal façade frames the remote-controlled fireplace. Concrete floors and high windows with low-E glass give sunlight unobstructed access throughout both levels of the house. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors “stack” open on the tracks, allowing guests to move freely from the kitchen, dining and living areas to the expansive pool outside. // Above: The home’s front entry was designed by Oklahoma City architect Robert Jenkins. The driveway, framed by horsetail reed plants, consists of concrete pavers embellished with mondo grass.

Page 20: Design Oklahoma Fall 2014

Construction on the property began almost two years ago with the teardown of the home that origi-nally occupied the lot, which Shyon purchased while he was living next door. While his company oversees commercial jobs on a much larger scale, this home rep-resented many firsts for him, beginning with the scope of the project. “I’ve had a role in almost every aspect of building this house from the ground up,” Shyon says. “This is the first house I’ve built from my own vision, starting from the framework, down to the minor details.”

18 DESIGNOKLAHOMA | FALL 2014

Page 21: Design Oklahoma Fall 2014

Shyon collaborated with Forest Kitchen Showroom to design the home’s ultra-modern kitchen, which features many convenient details, including a built-in espresso machine and a gas cooktop with retractable burners. The island and countertops are smoothed quartz by Freites Custom Marble & Tile. Prestige Lighting Solutions installed LED lighting throughout the home, including under-coun-ter illumination in the kitchen and bathrooms. The kitchen backsplash is made of satin glass from Consolidated Builders Supply, a feature that reappears in some of the bathrooms.

FALL 2014 | DESIGNOKLAHOMA 19

Page 22: Design Oklahoma Fall 2014

Above: In keeping with the home’s contemporary vibe, Shyon sourced furniture both locally and from California and Miami. Every wall and subfloor of the home was constructed with energy efficiency in mind. The 6-inch walls contain spray foam, which reduces energy loss, and also creates an excel-lent sound barrier from room to room. // Right: Where to begin … The bathroom’s centerpiece tub was actually an eBay find! Dual rainfall showerheads are equipped with LED sen-sor lighting to indicate the water temperature (blue for cold, red for hot). The walk-in-and-sit-a-spell shower is flanked by floor-to-ceiling mirrors, a heated towel rack and adjustable showerheads in the wall. Countertops are smooth quartz, and tile is from Emser Tile & Natural Stone.

The master opens to a balcony deck that overlooks the pool and backyard. // The master closet is conveniently equipped with a refrig-erator, as well as a washer and dryer.

IN 1994, MY HUSBAND AND I WERE THRILLED TO BUY OUR FIRST HOME. We loved the house, and still do. When we bought it, it was com-pletely gray – save for the wood floors. In the kitchen, the For-mica, the linoleum and the walls were all gray. The walls in the other rooms were various shades of the same. The only bathroom in the house was done in black and white tile – and of course we all know what happens when you mix black and white. It seemed I could not get away from this omnipres-ent color. I couldn’t wait to slap on the taupe – the hot color that every-one was using at the time. So I did, everywhere. And now … gray is back in a big way. You can thank Restoration Hardware. They’ve definitely helped keep this color in the limelight, and rightfully so. Gray is a great neutral: cool and smooth, perfectly calming when it’s light, with an enveloping rich-ness in a darker hue. Gray also has the ability to showcase any color. It can be the perfect backdrop in any form, from four walls to a large couch or a set of chairs. I can’t think of a color that doesn’t look good with gray. So here you go. Just a little vi-gnette that’s heavy on the gray, with splashes of color to show that not only is it here to stay, it’s per-fectly happy as the star of the show or in a supporting role.

AS A YOUNG MARRIED COUPLE STARTING OUT, Josh and Katie Mc-Cullock’s dream home initially wasn’t a 1973 aluminum camper, but it was off the beaten path. “For our first big home, we’d always talked about restoring an old house,” Josh says. “And we did it; we spent five years and way too much money renovating a house in the historical district.” Life took an unexpected turn, however, with youngest son Fisch-er’s diagnosis of a heart defect. Josh explains that he and his wife did a lot of rethinking during that time, about what they felt and believed about “home.” “Fischer’s open heart surgery when he was 8 months old really stopped us in our tracks for about a year and made us reevaluate a lot of things.”

“We went back and forth between Dallas for several months and then stayed there for a while during his recovery. When we came back to our 1,700-square-foot house after liv-ing in hotel rooms, we thought, ‘This is actu-ally a lot of work.’” With their eyes opened to the simplicity of small spaces, the McCullocks experienced an additional epiphany on a subsequent road trip that bolstered the desire to dial down. “Immediately after the doctors released Fischer, we took a month-long road trip,” says Josh. “Camping in national parks, all the way to California and back. That was what really sold us on making a change and having more free-dom in our daily lives; hitting the road with just the things we had and needed. We came back thinking, ‘This is the happiest we’ve ever been. Stuff had nothing to do with it.’” Plans had already been in the works for the McCullocks to build a new house on property shared with Josh’s parents and brothers, and the couple had decided to build a small cabin on the land to live in temporarily with sons Gavin and Fischer, while constructing their permanent home. Researching options for more diminutive dwellings on the Internet, they stumbled onto the small house movement, and in a serendipitous coalescence of timing, life change and opportunity, the plan changed.

Unique touches like the rustic table leg on the dinette (a souvenir stick picked up by Gavin on a trip to Taos, New Mexico) and geometric print cushions on the dinette (extra material from a sailboat renovation) add a sense of fun and are resilient enough for life with two small boys.

“Around that time a book tour came to Full Circle bookstore,” Josh says, “for a book called ‘Everything that Remains’ (written by Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus). It opened our eyes to the fact that we don’t really examine the toll consumerism takes on your space, your mental capacity to take care of so many things. We thought, ‘Instead of another big house, we’ll just live in the cabin.’” With the cabin now the ultimate destination, in-stead of a way station, the couple began building in earnest, but when their first home sold, the revved-up timeline left them in a quandary about a place to live until construction was finished. Enter the camper. “The Airstream came in at the last minute,” Josh explains, “I renovated it in a week-and-a-half in my driveway.” “We’re trying to build the cabin mortgage free, and the Airstream is the band-aid to help make that happen. I would have loved to have been farther along in the (cabin’s) building process, so that we wouldn’t have had to have an in-between solution, but we love Airstreams and I love renovating things.” Although the process of building their “dream home” is still ongoing (read about the continued jour-ney on the McCullocks’ blog at themccullocks.com or follow joshmccullock on Instagram), Katie and Josh are content in the present with their discovery of the power of simplifying, and know that the old adage holds true; home truly is where your heart is. Josh explains that

Slim closets flanking the refrigerator and stove supply storage, along with cabinets over the boys’ beds, but the principle of minimalism is mostly what keeps order. The engineered wood flooring was left over from the historic house remodel.

Many of the camper’s touch-ups add modern flair, but the bathroom exudes retro appeal.

Built by Josh and son Gavin, a free-standing greenhouse/cold frame/garden (the hinged top is made from old windows) houses herbs and showcases the family’s knack for repurposing materials, and blooming where planted.

the dividends they’re looking for, in the future, go beyond resale value, and that the purpose of all that they do – downsizing, building without debt – is to accrue the things that really matter. “Early on in my photogra-phy career, the one thing that I kept coming back to, about why I like to do what I do, is the freedom and the time.” “Money is one thing; you can make more money, but you can’t make more time.”

THE CHANGING OF THE SEASONS makes us ready to put away our light, airy, summer fabrics and replace them with something warm, cozy and thick. These deep, jewel-toned hues are just right for adding a touch of luxurious depth to your surroundings. Try changing out throws, pil-lows, or even curtains (if you feel ambitious!) for a pick-me-up to get into the swing of fall.

Urban Farmhouse DesignsIn a world of immediate gratification and mass

manufacturing, Urban Farmhouse Designs op-erates its entire business model on the premise

that objects of value are still made by hand and that quality not only takes time, it stands the test of time. As a locally owned, full-service manufacturer and retailer of residential and commercial fur-nishings and accessories created from reclaimed materials, Urban Farmhouse Designs specializes in one-of-a-kind pieces that celebrate a legacy and preserve the characteristics of enduring beauty and function. To do that, the company devotes much of its time to sourcing hard-to-find materials to be repurposed into a singular crea-tion that simply can’t be duplicated. Each piece created by Urban Farmhouse De-signs is manufactured on site in their 14,000-square-foot showroom in Oklahoma City by craftsmen who represent the best in their trade. Customers can bring de-sign ideas with them or find inspiration in the showroom’s ever-changing inventory of exclusive furnishings. Manufacturing, assembling and finishing can be seen in progress on-site, which always sparks an appreciation for the process and makes shopping a very experiential occasion. In addition to producing custom furnishings and accessories, Urban Farm-house Designs is a rich resource for homeowners who are building or remodeling. The company locates and makes use of reclaimed beams, mantels, doors and barn wood from several parts of the country, as well as quality wood from railcar flooring that dates as far back as the late 1800s. Urban Farmhouse Designs has also sourced items steeped in Oklahoma tradition from which they make pieces that are both beautiful and historic.

Homeowners Jana and David Herritt have a knack for welcoming guests into their home and making it seem they are a part of the family. “May I offer you something to drink,” Jana asks, “or are you hungry? Would you like something to eat?” A couple of canine friends, Bo and Abby, are on hand to greet you, as well as a 20-year-old cat named Punk. Built in the 1940s on a quiet, tree-lined street, the house has a traditional feel with an updated, modern flair. It is decorated in Jana’s favorite colors of grey, cream and gold. “When we bought the house 24 years ago, it was much different,” Jana said. “It was very dated.”

Above: “This was originally the dining room,” Jana said. “It was really wasted space so when we gutted the main floor we re-configured it and use it as a favorite place to watch TV.” // Looking toward the stairway – Jana says the home remodel made everything much more streamlined. “Before, the stairway had an old wood railing. Our contractors took all that out and made it much cleaner looking.”

“We added a room on the back and then added our bedroom upstairs. On the second floor, you originally had to walk through one bedroom to get to another.” The polished hardwood floors glisten. A large for-mal living space is anchored by an overstuffed gold

sofa. Above the sofa are handcrafted drawings of Jana and David’s three children: Amy, Robert and Brian. “Those portraits of our kids were done by a lo-cal artist, Mary Ann Fore, in Ardmore,” Jana says. “They were a gift from my parents and capture the children when they were young.

Clockwise from left: Stepping into the house, the main living area is the first thing guests see. Artwork provides a splash of color. // “This is where I often spend my mornings. It’s just a very peaceful place to sit and look outside, have a cup of coffee, answer some emails, or perhaps eat a piece of chocolate,” Jana laughs. // The spacious family room is flanked by a wall of full-length windows and doors that open onto the patio. Minimal coverings let in an abundance of natural light, and open the room up to the well-manicured lawn.

“On the other wall is a colorful piece of work from artist Joy Richardson. And on the bookshelf are a few classics we have collected through the years. I used the same white covering on all of them to give them a more uniform feel. “The house originally ended here,” Jana says as she steps down into the family room. “We added this room and the fireplace during our first remodel when we bought the house. A few steps away is the dining room. “This was an office when we first moved in,” Jana says. “It had a very low ceiling and you almost had to duck your head when you came in. It had grids on the ceiling like in the old school rooms. We took the attic space that was above it, added vaulted ceil-ings and the wooden beams so now it is very spa-cious and open. It makes it really nice, especially at Christmas when our family is all here.” Looking toward the front of the house, an el-egant writing desk is positioned in front of several full-length windows. “I really enjoy having such large windows; watching the falling leaves or the first snowfall. My 10-year-old niece lives across the street and in the spring and summer it is fun to watch her skate-board and ride her bike.”

Above: White orchids flank a piece of work from a local artist in the family’s TV room and living area. // Left: The dining area gets used a great deal when the entire family is home for Christmas.

Clean lines with open and spa-cious rooms are perfect for enter-taining. “We entertain some,” Jana said. “Not big parties, but last Friday we had a group of our closest friends over. The kids were here, plus David and I, so there were maybe 15 peo-ple. The open floor plan really lends itself to entertaining.” Jana and David are empty-nest-ers now, and did contemplate mov-ing at one point. “A few years ago when we had one of the big hail storms we con-sidered whether we should stay here or move. But when you have raised all your kids in one place, it just be-comes home. “The house has evolved into something that is very ‘us,’” Jana says. “Very peaceful, very comfort-able. I think we are pretty content.”

Clockwise from top left: “We enjoy our home and the things that remind us of good times we have done as a family. These antlers were a gift from our golden retriever, Bo. We were at the lake and he proudly brought them to us,” Jana laughs. // “We moved a bathroom from one part of the main floor to the other,” Jana says. “We installed a walk-in shower; recessed lighting and tumbled marble, giving it a very modern feel yet still rather Old World.” // Abby finds a comfortable spot on the stairway, basking in the afternoon light.

PROFILE

One of Oklahoma City’s most historic communities, Nichols Hills, is add-ing a jewel to its crown this year.

Located north of NW 63rd Street between Pennsylvania and Grand Boulevard, the new Glenbrook Park addition lies in the heart of northwest Oklahoma City’s finest shopping and dining and represents a rare opportu-nity for prospective homeowners. Accessible to existing Nichols Hills streets on both sides, Glenbrook Park is a pedes-trian-friendly enclave of cul-de-sac streets consisting of 14 lots and a neighborhood park. Of the 14 exclusive home sites offered, only ten remain available for purchase. Lot areas of up to 12,600 square feet can eas-ily accommodate up to 5,200 square feet of living area. The Glenbrook Park addition will benefit from all new storm and sewer systems, mod-ernized utilities, a homeowners association and superior police and fire protection by the City of Nichols Hills, according to respected Oklahoma City architect James Loftis, FAIA, the development’s managing partner. Loftis points out that the new develop-ment affords prospective homeowners sev-eral distinct advantages, among which are Nichols Hills’ exceptional location and es-teemed heritage, combined with an oppor-tunity for homeowners to create their own legacy in the construction of their home by using their own builders and designers. “What makes this opportunity especially unique,” Loftis explains, “is that Glenbrook Park represents the last available land for development in Nichols Hills. To be able to build something new in what is one of the most valued real estate locations in the city is very rare. It’s the best of both worlds.”

OF ALL THE HOLIDAYS, CHRISTMAS COULD ARGUABLY BE CALLED THE MOST SENTIMENTAL. Dickens used thenostalgiaandhopeassociatedwiththeseasoninhisnovella“AChristmasCarol”asameanstoencouragerecon-nection with the goodwill that comes so easily to us in our youth, and to il-lustrate the ever-present possibilityfor change when it’s needed. It’s a time for children – both actual and inner – and for establishing traditions, follow-ing them or bucking them, as needed. The balancing act of holding on to whatshouldbepreservedwhilecreat-ing something new – while consider-ing everyone involved, big and small– is one that’s familiar to Simon and Rachel Shingleton, and it’s a preceptreflectednotonlyintheirlives, butintheir décor choices as well … with a specialemphasisthatshinesthroughin their home at Christmas. “Oneofmylastingmemoriesfromchildhood is going to the neighbor’s house to play, andnot being allowedto sit on their beds,” says Rachel. “Itblew my mind because my mom was opentothingslikemedecoratingmyown room. I want [our home] to be kid-friendly,but Idon’t feel Ihave tosacrificemysenseofstyle.”

A white mantel wall acts as a canvas for an exuberant explosion of color; tissue paper hon-eycombs convey a spirit of celebration and echo the white tree adorned with bright ornaments, courtesy of Land of Nod, who also supplied the festive stockings and tree skirt. The Mathis Brothers couch and chair provide comfort with elegant lines (as does the pistachio-hued pouf, from Overstock.com), balanced by a brightly painted coffee table (a thrift store find).

One of the stars of the home’s structural makeover is the kitchen, where the removal of a wall and the original ceiling-mounted cabinets opened up a line of sight into the adjoining family room, and provided a way to maintain connection during meal prep or clean up, which fosters the kid-friendly utility so important to the Shingletons.

“I loved the plan,” says Rachel. “I remember thinking, I’m going to love being here, watch-ing my son.”

In keeping with the home’s fun but stylish feel, the red “Eat” sign – a purchase from Nor-man’s Antique Garden during Rachel’s college years – mirrors the playful hue of the candy apple Tolix chairs, and the nook near the back door houses a specially commissioned and designed painting by artist Erin Cooper, who also happens to be Rachel’s web designer.

The addition of an island made for more practical use of floor space, and a bar provides extra surface area, with seating supplied by shiny black barstools from Overstock.com that parallel the sleek countertops.

The Shingletons share their home with their six-year-old son, Jude, and two Chihuahuas named Coco and Nickles. They bought the house six years ago, after it had undergone a serious remodel, which included a kitchen redesign, the addition of closet space and an up-stairs playroom with dormer windows. “When I saw this house, it was midway through the renovation,” Rachel says. “It was dark, everything was torn up, but I’d seen another house that the owner had remodeled, and I understood what it was going to look like when it was finished.” That faith was well-rewarded; the final product is a fantastic blend of functionality and fun, with room for work and play, decorated with a comfortable style that re-flects the family’s approach to life year round, but finds a particular chance to shine during Christmas.

Clockwise from top left: The formal dining area is a perfect example of Rachel’s quest to maintain decorum while eschewing dowdiness; traditional de-tails like the wainscoting and classic lines of the Jonathan Adler for JCPenney table and buffet (an heirloom from Rachel’s grandmother) are balanced by crisp color and bright white. Mirrored panels reflect the light let in through generously sized windows, giving the room an airy atmosphere. // Son Jude’s playroom, while utilitarian and coordinated with the rest of the home’s colorful décor, also provides a few sentimental connections to the past: the elephant book caddy was Rachel’s as a child, and the enormous vintage Disney poster that adorns one wall was a gift to Rachel from Simon during their college years. Shelving and furniture from Pottery Barn provides streamlined storage for toys and a comfy place to relax. // “Our first home was built in the late ’50s or early ’60s,” Rachel explains, “And the lady had robin’s egg blue in every room of the house. She must have loved it – it was in the wallpaper, everything – and I came to love it, too.” A comforting visual theme throughout the home, the pale blue of the formal living area’s walls (a custom mix from Sherwin Williams) brings an aquatic tranquility to the room. The poolside artwork (a stock photo blown up and printed on canvas) adds to the effect, along with the sand-colored Pottery Barn couch and sunny-gold throw pillows from caitlynwilsontextiles.com. Cobalt blue accents in the Target pillows and lamp from Lamps Plus add depth, and clear glass bell jars from West Elm provide interest without distraction when paired with a glass Nate Berkus coffee table.

Bottlebrush Christmas trees make the entryway console (from Jonathan Adler for JCPenney) merry and bright, and putz houses gathered from a variety of boutiques and the Martha Stewart Collection add charm.

Like most families, the Shingletons have several commitments during the holi-days, but Rachel says that home has increasingly become a focus during that time of the year. “Our [extended] families are here, in Oklahoma, so we bounce around for Christmas, but it became important to my son to have Christmas morning at home. So for the past few years, we’ve worked at being here – in our pajamas, making breakfast – on Christmas morning.”

Clockwise from top: Pale yellow walls give the master bedroom a serene glow, accented with calmly colorful portraits in the form of colorful silhouettes designed by Rachel. A white linen Regency-style headboard from Williams-Sonoma Home paired with cheerful Pine Cone Hill bedding is the perfect mix for a stately slumber environment. Blue and white anchor throw pillows are from caitlinwilsontextiles.com. // Showcas-ing her knack for pairing new with vintage, and bright fun with cool, classic white, Rachel’s use of a dresser found at an estate sale (and painted periwinkle) as office furniture pairs easily with an Ikea desk and Eames-style chair from Overstock.com. A diamond-cut pink lamp from Lamps Plus and painting by lo-cal artist Rita Orloff add touches of inspiration-invoking style. // Rachel’s home office upstairs is another crowning achieve-ment of the home’s architectural re-do; what was formerly a dark hallway has been transformed (by removing a wall and bumping out two dormer windows) into a bright, spacious room that is simultaneously business-like and play-friendly, housing both a desk and work area for Mom and books and toys for Jude. “I wanted it to be a combined creative space,” Rachel says, proving that her desire for a kid-friendly home extends to her home business, as well. “He’s always been my little shadow, right next to me, so if I was going to be up here working, he needed a space, too.” // Lively patterns in the Ikea bedding paired with varying shades of soothing blue – from the navy Land of Nod bed to the sky-hued stripes on the walls (a painted labor of love that Rachel says will have to last her son until he moves out) – give Jude’s bedroom little-boy excitement without excess stimulus.

Clockwise from top left: Joyful signage from Target // Shelves from Ikea, repainted by Rachel, house both books and stylish accessories like the blue vase (a gift from Simon’s mother) and whimsical white seahorses from Z Gallerie. The framed print is Rachel’s design, available through pencilshavingstudio.com. // Star lights from Ikea set a calm and bright mood. // Land of Nod sponsored the furnishing of the home office, which includes totes from their collection to fill the Ikea shelving. // Tableware by Mackenzie-Childs, via On a Whim // Vividly hued place settings are vintage finds.

Simon works as a realtor and Rachel’s business – a line of home and tech ac-cessories and paper goods that she de-signs and markets – is based in the home, and operated through her website pencilshavingsstudio.com, which also features her lifestyle blog. “Land of Nod [furniture and acces-sory store] sponsored our Christmas dé-cor, and I proposed the idea of a bright, cheerful, colorful Christmas,” says Ra-chel. Her vision for decking the family home’s halls is simply a holiday version of its everyday style: stylish without be-ing stuffy. “It’s similar to my fashion sense,” says Rachel. “I like wearing high heels, but I might pair them with jeans and a striped shirt.” The image of a classy, casual denim-and-crisp-shirt motif is one that becomes obvious when walk-ing through the spacious but cozy resi-dence. Various shades of blue, often paired with white, are always liberally sprinkled with color. “I want our home to be cheerful and inviting, without being too formal. I want to be able to live in my house; I don’t want there to be any rooms that are untouchable.”
