Estimating Solar Photovoltaic Installations

Converting sunlight directly into electricity

6. How to defend your estimate when compared to “Industry Published” cost per KWh.

Hear Ron Gouldsmith, CPE

Ron began his career as an apprentice electrician with Local Union 124 is the early 80’s. After completing the apprenticeship program he continued working for electrical contractors in the capacity of Journeyman, Foreman, General Foremen and Service Truck Driver until 1996 when an injury ended his ability to do field work. He continued working for local electrical contractors as an estimator until he came to work at Burns & McDonnel in 2006 where he continues to work. At Burns & McDonnell he has estimated a variety of projects from Consumer Food line additions, Refineries and Gas Plants, Transmission & Distribution Systems as well as Alternative energy projects. Much of the estimating Mr. Gouldsmith’s estimating begins as conceptual in nature for feasibility purposes and continues through the design progression until an EPC (Engineer, Procure, Construct) estimate can be assembled.

Join Mike Phillips at the AGC office the third Wednesday of the month at 11:30. The next scheduled meeting is October 18th, 11:30, AGC Tulsa Office. $15 donation will help to defray the cost of boxed lunches provided each time.

You do not have to be an ASPE member to attend, and can invite anyone to the meetings. AACE members are also welcome to attend.

Denver, Colorado  Denver, Colorado

Like most professionals, the path to success was not ready-made, and I found myself loving the preconstruction field after gaining an understanding just how impactful it is to work with owners, architects and project teams to bring their dreams to realization. I graduated in the middle of the recession with a BFA in Interior Design from Oklahoma Christian University. Excited to join the work force, I was fortunate enough begin my career with DBG Construction, a firm that was willing to invest in me and offer entry level training into the construction field. At the time, the company was small, but growing fast. I drank out of the proverbial fire hose and learned everything I could about the technical skills required to construct buildings; it wasn’t necessarily the career I’d planned for at the time of my graduation, but it proved to be exactly the challenge I wanted in my professional life. I was given the option of becoming lead estimator, and helped to cultivate the company by generating work and improving efficiency at every opportunity. During my tenure as an estimator, I also completed my MBA in Organizational Development. As the organization grew larger, I managed the estimating department and the company continued to earn local and national recognition. In 2014, I joined Timberlake Construction, working in the field as a Project Manager. While working as a PM, two of my projects were honored by

“We build the community,

we build the future.

This phrase is the driving force that inspires me daily and why I’ve chosen

to make my career in the construction industry.”

the Oklahoma Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) with Build Oklahoma awards. Although getting back into estimating and preconstruction was always my professional goal, my time in the field laid the groundwork to excel as a preconstruction professional. In 2016, I was appointed to the position of Vice President of Preconstruction for Timberlake. In this role, I actively work with owners and architects to bring projects to fruition through collaboration on constructability and costing. This year I took another professional step and received my CPE certification. Since estimators typically get to their positions through apprenticeship and on the job training, becoming a certified professional estimator is an important step to signify not only a uniform knowledge base, but an understanding of the standards that we as preconstruction professionals are expected to adhere too. I look forward to further career growth, and in turn, the growth of the community, as we build the future together.

Lani Gunderson is currently the Vice President of Preconstruction at Timberlake Construction Company in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Drake Riedy and Jamie Gore, IE;Blinds, drove up from Tyler, Texas to make a presentation and share their wares at our September ASPE Meeting.

Integral Blinds are interior and exterior windows with sealed units, enclosing blinds between two panes of glass. Their use provide shading, privacy, sound acoustics, security and are good for use where sterile conditions are required. Thus, they are a great choice for hospital type establishments. Because the blinds are inside the window, they have a long lifespan, easier to clean and keep clean.

A description of the Integral blinds is as follows, the blinds are commonly 5/8” micro blinds of cold rolled aluminum, but can be made of other materials. They are completely customizable, so these are not an inexpensive choice. There are many options to select depending on the project’s requirements.

The blinds can be tilt only or tilt and lift, with various controls. The controllers can be direct drive, a hex key, dual or single control, and manual controls with a sliding handle or cords. The window can be either double or triple glazed, and the most common selection is clear tempered glass, even though all types of glass can be used. A different type of glass can be used on each side of the window unit. Triple glazing would of course require additional width, but could accommodate gas filled glazing.

Privacy is a big issue as well as observation of patients in a hospital type setting, and integral blinds offer solutions to achieve both needs. They can be angled to limit visibility into a room, but allow patients can be monitored.

The standard manufacturer’s warranty is ten years, and one year for motorized controls. The maximum height and width is ten feet both directions.

Integral blinds have several benefits over conventional blinds. They are silent to operate, don’t sway or gather dust. They last longer because they are protected between the glass panels. They don’t require additional space than a standard glazing pocket, or mess up the walls to hang traditional blinds.

Contact Drake Reedy or Jamie Gore for a quote. Because each project is custom, it is difficult to give a typical per square foot cost, but can range from $125/sf for one window to $60/sf for 20 windows, for material only (add freight and light kit cost).

NW SW Fall Regional Two chapter members will attend the Fall Regional in southern California. Regionals are great places to meet other ASPE members from other states, learn about the society business changes as it affects members and chapters, and to rub elbows with other chapter leaders in the regions. Solar eclipse The photo on the front page was taken by St. Louis, Missouri ASPE member Frank Kutelik’s grandson, as his family watched the solar eclipse in Arnold, MO, on August 21st, and experienced the full two minute totality. “The crickets were crazy loud, bees left flowers, birds stopped flying, and hummingbirds didn’t return till the next morning,” said Frank’s wife, Betty Kutelik. Clear skies allowed them to witness this “awesome and inspirational event.”
