Design considerations of casting
Which size of casting can be done?
Why casting?
Complex parts which are difficult to machine, are made by the casting process using send mould
Size of the send casting can be as small as 10g and as large as 200 k kg
Basic considerations of casting• Always keep the stressed areas of parts in
compression
(a)Original component(b)Use of Tie-rod(c)Use of Bearing-cap
Round all external corners
Wherever possible, the section thickness throughout should be held as uniform as compatible with overall design considerations
Avoid very thin sections• It depends upon the process of casting such as
sand casting , permanent mould casting or die casting
• Min. thickness for grey cast iron component is about 7mm up to 500 mm
Avoid concentration of metal at the junctions
Short blast the parts wherever possible
