What type of water produces celery that is crisp?

• You and your lab partners will design a controlled experiment, and write up a complete lab report based on this topic.

• You will conduct the study, analyze results, and determine why you obtained the results your data revealed.

• Let’s begin, move to the lab groups indicated on the next slide.

How will you organize your experiment?

Once you have your procedure organized…

• Person in row 2 (name in green) obtains your materials from the counter by the sink on the East side of the room.

• Prepare your experimental and control specimens, and don’t forget to label them with your names, and class period.

• Place them on the counter by the window - they need light!!

• Clean up!!!

While you are awaiting the materials, the person whose name is in red should obtain a life science book, and you should begin conducting research on the effect of salt water on living things. Look also at plants’ needs for water, and its use in the process of photosynthesis. Together, create a brief paragraph that will become part of your background reading (also called review of literature.) Visit this page for more questions to guide you.

Answer at least 2 of these in your back ground reading

• Does salt diffuse from outside the plant cell membrane into its cytoplasm?

• Where is the concentration of water the highest? (Inside or outside the cell in the salt water?)

• When a plant cell loses water from the interior of its cell, what happens to the turgor pressure and the shape of the cell?

• How are diffusion and osmosis different?
