The home of BoConcept is Denmark where we have been designing and

manufacturing design furniture for almost 60 years. That is our story.

And right from the beginning, our ambition has always been to create

furniture that not only looks good, but is functional and good value for

money too. By always thinking smarter and looking for a better solution.

To this day, we continue to produce furniture in Denmark as well as in

other parts of the world where we have chosen to work closely with a few,

select suppliers to ensure that our heritage and many years of experience

is carried through in everything we do.

Since 1952, we have come a long way with more than 250 stores around

the world. But our commitment to creating good, honest and useful

design is still the same. A commitment that is shared in all our stores.

Urban Danish Design since 1952 You have to start small to go big! And there wouldn't have been a

BoConcept if it had not been for two gifted Danish craftsmen, Jens Ærthøj

Jensen and Tage Mølholm, who decided to open a furniture factory in

1952 in the small town of Herning, Denmark. Their goal was not only to

make great quality furniture that looked good, it was to make it functional

and give good value for money. Jensen and Mølholm got it right. Their

vision turned BoConcept from a small furniture factory into Denmark’s

most global retail furniture chain with more than 250 successful

franchise-driven Brand Stores and 80 Studios in more than 50 countries.

‘The world today is far from 1952. It’s like a different planet. Yet some things never change. Like the desire for affordable luxury.’

1952 Wood was the dominant material for dining chairs.

2011 Modern production techniques give way to new details and shapes

that turn the classic dining chair into a refined and expressive

piece of design.

The world has changed dramatically since 1952,

and yet some things are just the same. Like

our customer's basic need for functionality and

comfort combined with aesthetics, simplicity

and price. That hasn't changed and probably

never will. We remain true to our great heritage

from Jensen and Mølholm while focusing on

new designs, colours and styles.

Another thing that has not changed since 1952

– we still design and manufacture furniture

in Denmark. Our team consists of Danish and

international designers, and we work with a

few, hand-picked certified suppliers in other

parts of the world. Our ambition is the same –

to create good, honest and useful design.

URBAN DANISH DESIGN

ANDERS NØRGAARDMasters in Architecture, Aarhus School of Architecture 1989.

Owner of Nørgaard Design in Aarhus, Denmark, he is a specialist in

designing great modular sofa concepts and chairs for BoConcept.

Optimise space. Having worked with BoConcept for many years,

Anders Nørgaard knows that this is essential for urban homes

where space has become a luxury. 'When you have a small space,

functionality tends to overrule beauty. My starting point for the new

Arco sofa was functionality. Achieving as many seats as possible

without taking up too much space in the room. But by trying to

think out of the box and working carefully with small details, like the

curvy armrests and piping, the sofa has a refined look with lots of

character.'

Anders Nørgaard begins with hand-made sketches. 'It's playtime

really. In the sense that at this stage there are no limits to what

you can try. Of course, I have certain guidelines for dimensions

and proportions based on experience, but a hand-made drawing

gives you a really good idea of what a detail can do for the overall

expression.'

The work continues with 3D visuals before the first prototype is

made. 'Having a prototype in front of you and a close dialogue with

the production engineers, we are able to make the final adjustments

together. So everything is optimised to ensure that the final result is

perfect in terms of look, function and quality.'

INITIATIVES FOR LIFE

INITIATIVE 16: RECYCLED MDF AND CHIPBOARDWe constantly find ways to make more out of less. That is also why we

have chosen to mainly use MDF and chipboard instead of solid wood in

our production. They are made from wood waste in the form of sawdust,

reclaimed wood or small wood pieces. A choice that effectively cuts down

the need for raw materials.

INITIATIVE 8: MAKING A HOMEOur business is furnishing homes. But some are not fortunate enough

to have a home. We have a policy that encourages our stores and

warehouses to donate ex-display and discontinued furniture or pieces

with minor faults to organisations that help the homeless. We have, for

example, donated mattresses to churches in New Jersey, and in Denmark

we have donated furniture to a nationwide youth organisation that helps

children and young people who do not have a home of their own.

It’s in our nature at BoConcept to think smarter. Not just about

furniture design, it’s about everything we do that affects the

never give up on. Here’s just a small sample of the initiatives we

INITIATIVE 13: GLOBAL COMPACTBoConcept supports the UN Global Compact, which is a strategic policy

initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations

and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of

human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

INITIATIVE 4: ECO-FRIENDLY LACQUERWe use UV-based lacquer for the majority of our lacquered furniture. This

type of lacquer hardens when exposed to ultraviolet light so we avoid

using chemicals. During the last decade, we have saved 425 tonnes of

chemicals by changing our lacquer to UV based. Another benefit of the

UV-based lacquer is that it effectively seals in formaldehyde found in

the majority of chipboard and MDF, thus making a piece of lacquered

furniture safer for you, our employees and the environment.

INITIATIVE 21: LESS TRANSPORTWe have regional distribution centres in Europe, USA and now in Asia

to reduce the distance that our products have to travel to reach our

customers. In April 2010, we opened our Asian Distribution Centre to cut

down on the transportation distance for this region, resulting in a 15%

reduction in transportation and CO2 emissions in Asia.

INITIATIVE 10: THE BOCONCEPT CATALOGUEThe BoConcept catalogue has been printed by Mohn Media in Germany

who works actively to reduce the environmental impact of print products.

Their innovative use of combined heat and power technology has reduced

the CO2 emissions by up to 52% in comparison to conventional print

methods in Germany. In 2008, we also moved from 196 pages to 164

pages. This has effectively reduced paper consumption and transportation

needs, thereby cutting CO2 emissions by 16%.

THIS WAS THE CHALLENGE FOR THE WATANABE FAMILY, WHO LIVES IN SHIZUOKA JUST OUTSIDE TOKYO, JAPAN. THE

LAYOUT OF THE HOUSE WAS A GOOD STARTING POINT WITH AN OPEN PLAN LIVING AND DINING ROOM, A BEDROOM,

Wood and veneerWood and veneer are affected by light. •

For the first 6–8 weeks, when the item is

first absorbing the surrounding light, keep

the surfaces clear of any objects to avoid

permanent marks and circles. At first, new

furniture will also need time to absorb light

before it will match the tone of your existing

furniture

Water is only to be used in small doses and •

only in the form of a damp cloth. After wiping,

always use a dry cloth

Wood and veneer are very sensitive to liquids. •

Wipe up spilled liquids immediately

Upholstery in generalIf possible, switch the seat and back cushions •

on a regular basis to extend the life of your

cushions and to ensure even wear over the

years

Cushions with a filling of foam• l feathers or

fibre should be shaken regularly to ensure

form stability

All our furniture is made from high-quality

Wood furnitureYou will find veneer surfaces on most of our

board furniture, such as wall systems, tables and

bed frames. Veneer is just like wood – a natural

material – and variations in the grain must be

expected. This is what makes each piece of wood

furniture unique. The majority of our wooden

parts are UV-lacquered 3–4 times to ensure a

very durable surface. Our surfaces are tested

continuously to ensure that the resistance to

scratches and liquid spills, and the colour fastness

meet our standards for normal, everyday use.

GlassMost of our glass table tops are made of tempered

glass for the safety of our customers.

We apply a heat treatment to our coloured glass

plates where the colour pigment is burned into the

glass. This ensures that the colour is resistant to

scratches. All edges are finished to the highest

standard.

Metal partsThe majority of our metal parts are made from

the highest quality metal, keeping any impurities

to the lowest level. Our chromed metal parts are

treated with two layers of nickel underneath the

chrome. It leaves a very smooth surface with

minimum risk of rust. Other metal parts are

powder coated. This gives a tougher surface than

when using conventional paint. Powder coating

is also an eco-friendly surface treatment as the

lacquer does not contain any solvents and excess

paint can be re-used.

Upholstered furnitureWe are dedicated to ensuring that every single

piece of our upholstery provides you with perfect

sitting comfort. That's why we primarily use high

resilient foam in our seat cushions. High resilient

foam is very structurally stable, ensuring optimum

comfort and a long lifetime. The back cushions

have channels inside them to keep the filling

material in place, but we always recommend that

you shake your cushions regularly to ensure form

stability. With time and use, foam and cushion

filling will stabilise so your sofa or chair will feel

smooth and comfortable.

The selection and application of hardwearing

materials, which contribute to the lifetime of

our products, is a key criterion for us – as is the

widespread use of solid wood where strength

and stability are required. Our products are

upholstered with high quality foam that ensures

both soft and rounded edges and corners, and

means that our fabrics and leathers wear less and

last longer.

Leathers and fabricsWe select our leather and fabrics based on the

design and function of the individual products

they are to be used for. We guarantee no colour

difference between different pieces of furniture

when commissioned as one order. Our only

requirement is that all the pieces of furniture are

ordered at the same time.

All leathers and fabrics will stretch during use.

To achieve the best comfort, covers cannot fit too

tightly. Therefore, some creasing may occur, but

this adds character to the sofa or chair.

All our furniture fabrics and leathers are tested

at internationally recognised and accredited

institutions.

These leather types are available from

BoConcept:Rio and Santos leathers are made from Buffalo and

Bahia and Salto leathers are made from cowhide

that have been treated to provide a consistent

structure and provide protection against spotting

and stains. All four leathers are comfortable

and hardwearing. Easy to maintain, they retain

their appearance over a long period of time. Rio

and Bahia are 0.9 mm thick leathers that can be

recommended for the majority of our upholstery.

Salto is a 1.2 mm thick leather that is suitable for

all types of upholstery, while the 1.9 mm thick

Santos leather is limited to be used for big, soft

surfaces giving you an even more exclusive look.

Estoril leather is made from cowhide, and is known

for its characteristic, exclusive feel and natural

grain. Soft and flexible, Estoril leather is slightly

corrected semi-aniline treated leather that ensures

maximum sitting comfort. Through use, Estoril

leather will receive a beautiful patina that adds

character to the product.

Salvador is top grain leather and classified as

aniline leather. The best selection of hides is

used for aniline leather. The natural softness

of the leather is preserved to ensure exclusive

seating comfort. Visible natural markings will add

character to the material.
