Potentate’s MessageRudy F. NoblezaFirst and foremost, I would like to say “Welcome to a New Year,” and hoping for a better and brighter 2021.

The simple act of saying “thank you” does wonders.

Yet sometimes, those two words alone don’t seem to suffice. Sometimes the person/persons you are thankful for, made such a difference,

and your gratitude is so profound, a pat on the back just isn’t enough.

Appreciation is more than saying thank you. It’s about demonstrating that your gratitude is truly seen and heard by thanking them for specific actions. It’s about showing that you understand and empathize with the struggles your organization faces every day. And it’s about purpose too, true appreciation connects your organization’s efforts back to a grand vision and mission.

So it’s time to diversify your portfolio of reliable tips and go-to words of wisdom for expressing your undying appreciation.

In an organization, appreciation increases the value of your most important assets—your members—over time. Here are some ways appreciation enhances member relations:

• Appreciation makes members stick around. In fact, statistics suggest that a lack of appreciation is the main driver of member turnover, which costs an organization’s member attendance to go down, as any fraternal organization chart is showing.

• Appreciation reinforces members’ understanding of their roles and expectations, which drives engagement and performance.

• Appreciation builds a strong organizational culture that is magnetic to both current and prospective members.

• Appreciation might generate positive long-term mental effects for both the giver and the receiver.

• Appreciation motivates members. One experiment showed that a few simple words of appreciation compelled members to make more fundraising calls.

To summarize it all, I would like to say “THANK YOU” to all of you, for all you do, and especially for being patient thru this Covid-19 crisis.

“For when the Great Scorer pens your name, HE writes not if you won or lost, but how you played the game!” – Grantland Rice

4 JANUARY 2021

There was born an idea that was to become Al Bahr’s first Clown Unit. The year was 1946 when the incoming Potentate asked a professional clown to plan for the initiation of a new unit. With the help of some very dedicated Nobles the beginning of the Al Bahr Shriners Clown Unit was established. The groups first appearance in makeup earned a prize for the best costume and makeup at the Al Bahr Shrine Camp Halloween Dance. The next appearance was at the Toyland Parade in North Park, followed by an appearance at the Boys Club of Logan Heights. The group was on its way! It was not until two years later that the Potentate gave the official nod of recognition for the group to become a Unit. Little did anyone know at the time that the Clowns would become one of the Shriners signature and most recognizable Units for years to come. From these modest beginnings the Clowns have represented Al Bahr Shriners all over the Western half of the United States, including

Peace Officers Shrine Club & Greeter Unit- Mike RandallAny Al Bahr member who is interested in either the Greeter Unit or the Peace Officer’s Shrine Club is welcomed to attend the meeting of the unit or club of your choice. If each of us just brings in one new member, we could be on our way to being the Unit or Club we once were. We need new members so if any of you wish to see what we do, please contact me below. Our Greeter meetings are held quarterly on the second Monday of the meeting month. For 2021 our meetings will be Jan 11, Apr 12, July 12, & Oct 11. Our next Greeter’s meeting will on January 11, 2021 at 6:00 with social and dinner around 6:30 and 7:00 for our meeting.

Our POSC meetings are now held on third Wednesday of the meeting month. For 2021 our meetings will be Jan 20, Apr 21, July 21, & Oct 20. Our next POSC meeting will be on January 20, 2021 at 5:30 social with dinner and 7:00 for our meeting. ALL of these dates are “assuming” that we will be out of this COVID-19 lockdown.

Past Masters - Abe RavitchLadies and Nobles, The holidays are over, but let’s look forward to the good times to comes. With that in mind. Please be safe. Before we do all of that though, let us remember all the people who have passed before us. Whether they be family or otherwise. Have a happy new year! .

Sons of the Desert - Bill RomerHolidays are behind us, a New Year is in front of us. I hope all are well and looking forward to some good news. Let’s forget the past and look toward our future. Now is the time to reach out to our friends & family, place a call, see how they are doing, see if there is anything you can do for them tp make their day better. Join a Club or Unit, Do your part to make our Shrine shine.

See You in 2021

Chaplain’s Message - Dave WinesettA Time for Renewal

The New Year offers a time for reflection about our lives and our relationships. We make resolutions for self improvement and commitment to things we hope to accomplish in the months ahead. Also, it is a time for thinking about others and how we can be of service by sharing our talents, our time and our encouragement.

The New Year reminds us that we need spiritual renewal to guide our thoughts and to seek strength from our Creator. There are many scriptural verses to support this spiritual renewal and focus our thoughts. One such verse is found in Psalm 116:2, “How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me?” Obviously, each of us will have a different set of things we can do. What gifts can we offer to make a difference in someone’s life in this New Year -- a gift of friendship, of love, of caring? However small the gesture, it can make a big difference. This extends to reflecting about our obligations as Shriners -- to our brothers, our families and to those thousands of children whose lives are enriched by our efforts.

Direction for us to follow in the New Year can be found in Micah 6:8, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Tin Lizzies - Alex C. Manzano Although we are facing unprecedented times this year, let us take a moment to give thanks to our family and friends, good health and camaraderie in the Al Bahr Shriners. I appreciate and thank all members of the Tin Lizzies for your dedication as we continue to be safe ,strong together through this pandemic.

My family and I wish you all peace and happiness. May there is success and goodness. May there is positivity and lots of opportunities for you this year. Thank you and May God Bless Us All.

“Maligayang Bagong Taon” Happy New Year 2021

Clowns - Tex “Clubber” PerryOur One of a Kind Christmas season is over and as we bring in the New Year, let me just say “Thank You” to each and every one of our Nobles for their support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children! I wake up every morning knowing that I am blessed to have so many great, kind hearted, and just good people – it makes me smile.

Hopefully the Clowns will be able to start clowning around again – causing smiles and laughs throughout the crowds! Let’s all pray that the Covid curse is lifted with the new vaccine coming our way. May you and yours be safe until we meet again in person.

PS. I would never forget to give a bigger “Thank You” to our Ladies, Family, and Friends – for not for them, we could not do what we do.

Hawaii, in both Shrine and Civic functions. The Unit, 21 members strong in 1977, has lightened hearts of the Young and Old alike at hospitals, parades, community functions, Temple events, and locations everywhere that sunshine, merriment, and laughter are needed. The Unit is especially proud of the fact that all personal equipment, costumes, makeup, balloons, and other expenses of the individual are solely maintained by the members themselves. In the past the Clowns would hold a Carnival Breakfast to assist in the support of the Units inventory of equipment. Over time the Unit has had equipment such as the following: frolicking galloping bicycles, very small bicycles, a resplendent white and gold ‘steam calliope’ mounted on a trailer, a backseat driven model-T funny car, and of course the Calliope mounted on a truck that we all know and love. Many active clowns have participated during the 73 years of fun, frolic, sweat, and tears the clowns have been around, all dedicated to bringing a smile where a frown may have been and lifting the hearts of the less fortunate, whether young or old. We appear whenever called upon to support our fraternity, Children in the Shriners Hospitals, as well as other organizations such as the Lions Club, Ronald McDonald House, and many others. Behind each clown, and sometimes standing beside us as a lady clown, is our lovely ladies without whose talents and dedication none of this would be possible. If you are interested in becoming a Shriners Clown please contact Tex “Clubber” Perry at 858-263-9084 or [email protected]. The club will be more than willing to assist you in getting started in Clown with instructions on Makeup, Costumes, and Balloons. New members are always welcome. There is a Clown in each one of us, let us help you bring it out and make them smile!
