ORIENTAL – Lanterns by the Lake by Joan S. Grigsby & Misc Books on Far East
Lanterns by the Lake, by Joan S. Grigsby, 1929, An interesting collection of poems by an itinerant British author who came
to settle in Canada after a period travelling around Japan and Korea, during which time she composed verses inspired by her
surroundings and in the native style - a handful of poems in this collection are 'adapted from' or 'suggested by' a Japanese
model, but the majority are original. Grigsby also published under her maiden name of Rundall. The illustrations provide
additional interest: again, showing a western artist using the techniques and scenery of Japan and Korea. Unlike her close
friend Grigsby, Miller had been born in Japan to an American family and spent the early part of her life there before returning
to the US to complete her education - following which she moved to Korea and then moved between there and Japan, only
ending her association with the country of her birth following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The two would collaborate
further on Grigsby's collection of versions of Ancient Korean poems, 'The Orchid Door', whilst Miller had published her own
collection of poetry in a similar vein two years previously.; The Building in Japan; includes various books in a Japanese or
Chinese script (qty)

pages). "The first Afghan War of 1838-1842 witnessed one of the greatest defeats ever inflicted upon the British by an Asian
enemy--the retreat from Kabul. On January 6, 1842, a British force that, with its followers numbered some 16,000, marched
out of Kabul under an illusory safe conduct; one week later, nearly all of them- -men, women, and children-lay dead along the
ninety mile route, some killed by the Afghan enemy, the rest frozen to death in the snow. Of all the participants in the
tragedy, none has told the story better than Lady Sale. This is her journal. One of the few witnesses who survived the
massacre, Florentia, Lady Sale, was the wife of second-in-command at Kabul, Sir Robert Sale. Her journal begins in
September 1841 when the whole position of the British, and the butterfly social existence they led in the Kabul cantonments,
was menaced both by Afghan intrigue and by the incompetence of their own command. The journal ends a year later, with
the rescue of Florentia by her husband from nine months of captivity in Afghan hands. In the intervening period she had
witnessed battle, murder, and sudden death, had been exposed to freezing cold and burning heat, had endured vermin-
infested lodgings and incessant earthquakes--all recorded with a laconic imperturbability and an occasional flash of sardonic
humor." Interestingly, the present copy includes a publisher's notice tipped in advertising Eyre's suite of lithographs, titled
Portraits of the Cabul Prisoners: "The plates will be published in such as size as to enable purchasers to bind them up with

The Defence of Cawnpore by the Troops under the Orders of Major general Charles A. Windham in Nov. 1857, written by Lt
Col John Adye, 1858, Original red embossed cloth, title gilt to front board, reddish-brown surface-paper endpapers, printed

creation of an enemy outpost in General Havelock's rear. Author defends General Windham's actions. Includes dispatches”.
Following the outbreak of the Indian mutiny, Adye was sent to India as assistant adjutant-general of artillery. Arriving at
Cawnpore he discovered that Sir Colin Campbell had already left to relieve Lucknow, with the Gwalior contingent advancing
on Cawnpore. "He took part in the actions fought there by Major-General Charles Ash Windham and afterwards wrote The
Defence of Cawnpore. He was present at the battle of 6 December, in which the Gwalior contingent was routed by Sir Colin
Campbell after his return from Lucknow. His administrative duties then compelled Adye to return to Calcutta, and he saw no
more fighting during the mutiny". From early 1859 Adye commanded the Madras artillery; deputy adjutant-general of artillery
in India from March 1863 until 1868; "and implemented the amalgamation of the three East India Company regiments of
artillery with the Royal Artillery, which required patience and tact". Following his return to England in 1866 he was
successively Director of Artillery and Stores, governor of the RMA, Surveyor-General of the Ordnance, and finally Governor

AN IMPORTANT OFFICIAL MEMORANDUM REGARDING THE ESTATES OF THE WIDOW & SON OF MAHARAJAH
SHER SINGH OF THE PUNJAB INDIA & PAKISTAN - Memorandum of Maharajah Sher Singh’s widow
A fine 2pp handwritten copy of an official signed memorandum from the Under Secretary to the Government of India to the
Agent to the Governor General at Benares, dated Fort William 29th August 1859. The document pertains to correspondence
from Rani Dukhno, widow of Maharajah Sher Singh, for the jagheers (estates) allocated to her son Shahazada Sheo Deo
Singh, and her allowance. In response the Governor general ‘does not consider that the estate yielding 8000 rupees a year is
an inadequate provision for the Shahazada’, and it further states that his Excellency informs the Rani that her own stipend of
1200 rupees will not be diminished under any circumstances.
The Rani Dukhno and her son Shahazada Sheo Deo were exiled from the Punjab with Maharajah Duleep Singh to
Fatehgarh Camp in 1850. When Duleep Singh was sent to England, the Rani had hoped it would pave the way for her son to
be made the Maharajah of the Punjab if the opportunity arose as Duleep Singh had become a Christian. But after the
ransacking of the Camp by mutineers in 1857, mother and son found themselves desolate and lived their remaining years in
Benares with very little means. When the Shahzada came of age he was given a meagre stipend. He and his mother spent
their last years sending Duleep Singh begging letters for financial assistant.
