It would be unfair to describe yesterday’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale top lot as coming from an unexpected source. Just as it would be to assert that the

$560,000 Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) colt, secured by Orbis Bloodstock, is going to an unlikely home.

However, the delight of vendor Michael Flannery and prospective trainer Michael Costa could hardly be disguised after the sale of the colt out of the O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare Sistine Princess.

In truth, Springmount’s Flannery has gradually built to such a result but this was certainly a suitable reward for the experienced horseman’s decision to relocate from Western Australia in 2015.

And while nobody would argue that Costa is not an extremely promising trainer, even he could see the irony in acquiring such a high-priced yearling - indeed the second coming his way via the Paul King-managed Orbis Bloodstock - after putting his own hand up for a $26,000 Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) filly earlier in the day. Morning BriefingMelbourne Cup winner Americainto stand at Daisy Hill

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Americain (Dynaformer) will transfer to Daisy Hill as its foundation stallion for the 2019 breeding season after spending seven years at Swettenham Stud.

Americain, who won the 2010 renewal of the Flemington showpiece for owners Gerry Ryan and Daisy Hill proprietors Kevin and Colleen Bamford, is the sire of US stakes winner Causeforcommotion and the Australian stakes-placed Amerock and American Joy. He is also the sire of the David Payne-trained Costello, who is being set for the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick on April 6. Stud News page 14

“Yes, I was certainly buying at the other end of the spectrum….and I think I need to go for a run,” Costa said in reference to gathering his thoughts after Orbis had entrusted him not only with this Brazen Beau colt but also a Zoustar (Northern Meteor) colt, who sold for $500,000.

"It is a different strawberry for me, not kicking off on a shoestring budget, so to have the support of Orbis and the flywheel gathering momentum in the stable, this is a huge asset.

"I knew Paul when I was in Sydney and he has been watching the stable for a long time. Statistically, we have been running very well with limited stock and he was impressed by that.

“The integrity of the stable is another thing he has been impressed with. It was pretty much a cold call, then we had a couple of meetings and he liked what I had to say and it has blossomed from there.

“I’ve been very fortunate. I think the fact that we have a Queensland operation was suitable as a third leg for Orbis. I came down last Monday and looked at every lot.”

The competition was keen for Springmount’s colt with at least three bidders in play near the end,

including underbidder Henry Field of Newgate Farm, and Flannery was pleased with the outcome after one temporary lull in the auction process.

“He’s been a trouble free colt from the day he

was born. He was here to be sold and he was on the market at $180,000,” Flannery said, before adding that the mare Sistine Princess had a Street Boss (Street Cry) filly foal at foot and was in foal to Written Tycoon (Iglesia). “But I think she’ll going back to Brazen Beau,” he said with a smile and understandable intent.

Flannery sold the colt’s sister to Ontrack Thoroughbreds for $150,000 at Premier last year.

King said the colt was “very high” on his Premier list, while it was the third purchase of the week for Orbis Bloodstock after also securing Lot 4, another son of Brazen Beau, for $800,000 on Sunday.

“That’s us done for the week. We’re very pleased with the three colts we’ve secured. They’re all quality and you’d expect them to go very well. I guess we will know in 18 months’ time whether we’re right or wrong,” he said.

“This colt had a great attitude, a nice walker. He’s very athletic with scope to improve. I told the boss ‘I love him’ when he was on the end of the phone as the bidding went on and he was asking me whether we should keep going.”

The colt, who was catalogued as Lot 452, was the fourth most expensive lot sold during Book 1 of the 2019 Premier sale, which saw ten yearlings sell for $400,000 or more and to a top of $800,000.

Darley’s Victoria-based second crop sire Brazen Beau was responsible for five of the top ten lots and averaged $285,294 from 17 lots sold.

Big pinhook result for Maluka as Zoustar colt makes $500,000

Orbis Bloodstock’s other purchase of the day was a colt by Widden Stud’s exciting young sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor), who they secured for $500,000 from the Maluka Thoroughbreds draft.

The purchase also signalled a significant windfall for Maluka Thoroughbreds, who re-offered him in Melbourne yesterday after buying him for $230,000 as a weanling last year.

The colt was one of two expensive yearlings by the sire yesterday, following on from a filly who snapped up by trainer Tony McEvoy for $380,000 earlier in the session.

Luke Anderson of Maluka Thoroughbreds was delighted as well as relieved with the sales ring result, which justified his decision to go hard to buy the colt at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale last May.

“We purchased the colt with Peter McIntyre of Milawa Park who is a great judge of horses,” Anderson told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“What we are essentially trying to do is buy supreme racehorses, so we picked him out as a cracking type at the sales. We loved him, we believe in him as a racehorse in the future as he has so much speed and presence about him.

“We developed him to come to the sales and ideally make a profit. We want to sell Blue Diamond winners and to do that you have to push the boat out a bit at the weanling sales and buy the ones we want and that’s what we did.”

The colt is the ninth foal out of the juvenile winner Saffie Darling (Catrail), who is a half-sister to former Hong Kong Horse of the Year Sacred Kingdom (Encosta De Lago) and is the dam of five individual winners. The most expensive weanling bought by Maluka Thoroughbreds and also the highest-priced yearling the Andersons have sold, the colt was catalogued as Lot 425.

“He is a lovely type and very much has his old man’s head, he is a good walker and very athletic,” Orbis Bloodstock manager Paul King said.

“I was actually pretty happy at $500,000 and if I had to go higher I would have without a doubt.

“We have been looking for a while and my client was very keen to get one. I think he is probably one of the nicest ones that I have seen.”

Late in the Book 1 session, Maluka Thoroughbreds also sold a Tavistock (Montjeu) colt for $300,000 to Champion Thoroughbreds. Catalogued as Lot 506, he will be trained by John O’Shea.

McEvoy takes shine to Zoustar fillyTrainer Tony McEvoy, who bought a filly by Zoustar earlier in the

session, believes the similarities between his brilliant filly Sunlight and his latest acquisition by the Widden Stud-based sire is almost uncanny.

Such is his belief in the physique and conformation of the filly he says she is likely to be up and running in the early juvenile races later this year.

“What a powerful, fast filly,” McEvoy said about his eighth purchase of the week. “It is a cliche but Sunlight looked like that. All she wanted to do was run, she is full of fast-twitch fibre and she is going to be a ‘sit and steer’.

“She is a two-year-old, absolutely, and you’ll see her in October. She is a star of the future.”

McEvoy also made comparisons with another stablemate, this season’s BRC B J McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Sun City (Zoustar).

“They are not big horses but they are all power and just when she walked, it was all movement, she was like a machine with how everything fitted in,” he said.

“She is also off a beautiful farm in Mill Park, not many people do it better than them, and she is a beauty.”

The underbidder, Yulong Investments, are likely to buy back into the filly, who was the only daughter of Zoustar catalogued at the sale.

Catalogued as Lot 399, the filly is the second foal out of five-time winning mare Ravenous Lass (Stratum), who in turn is a half-sister to the juvenile winner and Group 2 winner San Nicasio (Hard Spun).

Mill Park’s Chris Watson was rewarded in the sales ring after electing

to target the Premier Sale with the Zoustar filly rather than send her to sales earlier in the year.

“She is an early, forward style of filly but we thought we would place her in a sale where she would be a real standout,” Watson told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“We hoped it would work out that way and it has.”Later on in the afternoon, Mill Park Stud also sold an I Am Invincible

(Invincible Spirit) colt for $310,000 to Hong Kong agent Willie Leung of Magus Equine. The colt was Offered as Lot 411.

At the end of the Book 1 Premier Sale, Mill Park Stud sold nine lots for $1,372,000 at an average of $152,444.

Watson reiterated the view shared by many vendors this week in that high-quality yearlings were being well found by buyers and selling for above expectations.

“We couldn’t be happier. The nice horses are well sought after and if you have got them here in 100 per cent fashion they have been really well received.”

Meanwhile, Stonehouse Thoroughbreds’ successful Book 1 offerings at Inglis Premier concluded with its one lot offered yesterday making $325,000 to the bid of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

That sum paid for Lot 403, an I Am Invincible colt out the Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) mare Recurring Dream, took the Storehouse gross to $2.4 million and had obvious appeal to the Sydney training team, with the dam being a half-sister to the multiple stakes winner Ecuador (High Chaparral), who won ten times for the stable, including four at stakes level.

“That was an excellent result,” said Stonehouse’s Ryan Arnel. “It was a little more than we might have expected but we he was popular and we knew where he stood, so it was just a matter of getting him on the market with a realistic reserve and the quick bidding supported that position.”

Webster calls for greater vendor supportInglis managing director Mark Webster, while pleased with the results

achieved through Book 1 of the Premier Sale, called on local vendors to greater support the sale next year.

“We had less horses in P1 [Book 1] this year and that was partly driven by fewer quality entries than last year,” Webster said. “So to be clear, after last year’s sale, there were some unhappy vendors, so we didn’t get as much support for the catalogue this year as we did last year and so to be in the position we’re in is a quite a positive outcome.”

“What we demonstrated was that there was a lot of strength at the top of the market. Last year we sold one yearling over half a million dollars - this year it was seven and yearlings sold over $300,000 this year was 32 and last year 23.

“So what I’d say for a catalogue that lacked the same level of quality across the board I think we’ve been able to get very good results.

“However, there’s definitely money left on the table as I go around to talk to buyers and it’s very frustrating that is still the case. I’ve been talking to vendors on the grounds about the need to back this sale with their entire drafts in the future not just part of their drafts.

“Vendors like Rick Jamieson and Gilgai had a fantastic sale averaging over $200,000. I think Rick was averaging around $260,000 before one went through at the end which was quite cheap and pulled it down a bit but to average that with what he submitted to the sale, that was fantastic after he took a draft to the Gold Coast.

“For a lot of vendors I believe we did a very good job for them. Some Hunter Valley vendors, notably Edinburgh Park and Bhima, came down and had a really good experience. Hopefully that will encourage other vendors to come down from the north.”.

Webster asserted that the sale must continue to be international in attraction and status.

“It’s an international sale if you look at the people out here this week,” he said. “If this reverts to being a Victorian sale it would be insular and wouldn’t get the same depth of buying.

“We’ve had people here buying on behalf of Hong Kong and Chinese interests happy to spend $500,000 to $600,000 on horses and that gives us great confidence. Fortunately they’re bidding on Victoria sired progeny, like Brazen Beau, which hasn’t always been the case.

“I still think those internationals would like to see a broader mix of those elite stallions and to get them we need those farms down here that produce them to keep them here and some of the Hunter Valley farms to come down.

“I think we’ve demonstrated we can get the international bench, they were all here and bidding strongly and a lot said they wished there was more on offer.

“That’s the message for next year, don’t allow money left on the table and show greater support for the sale and we’ll keep backing it. We’ve done everything we can to get these people here, from all over the world.”

Meanwhile, the two top lots of the Book 2 session yesterday were a Toronado (High Chaparral) colt and a Better Than Ready (More Than Ready), who both made $135,000.

The final Book 2 session starts at 11am today.

Osborne Bulls toNewmarket HandicapJames Cummings believes Osborne Bulls (Street Cry) is flying ahead of his bid to claim a first Group 1 win in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on Saturday. The gelding was last seen flying home for second in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m). “He's flying, Osborne Bulls," Cummings said. “He's gone ahead since the Lightning. He's just in great shape so we're quietly confident that we've got him where we visualised we might be able to have him at the very beginning of this preparation for a race like this.” Osborne Bulls will shoulder 56 kilograms while his stablemate and last-start Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) runner-up Encryption (Lonhro) has 51 kilograms.

Time To Reign readyfor TodmanTime To Reign (Time For War) warmed up for his Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) assignment this weekend with a searching gallop upsides older sprinter Vincero (Stratum) at Warwick Farm yesterday. The Gary Portelli-trained juvenile upset fellow Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) fancy Tassort (Brazen Beau), who is now a doubt for the race with a bruised foot, at his last start in the Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m). "Time To Reign beat Vincero in the gallop and has come on since his Silver Slipper win," Portelli said. "He is absolutely cherry ripe. He lost two kilos after the race and put it back on within two days. And now we know he can cope if it's wet or dry. We also know he will be going to the Slipper as fit as he can be."

Penalty for DreamforceLast-start Liverpool City Cup (Gr 3, 1300m) winner Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) has received

a one kilogram penalty for that victory, taking him to 53.5 kilograms in the weights for the $3 million Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). Trained by John Thompson, Dreamforce beat Snippets Land (Snippetson) by three-quarters of a length to win Saturday's Group 3 at Randwick under 59.5 kilograms and Thompson is confident the gelding can be in the shake up should he be granted a Doncaster start. "He just needs to get into the Doncaster and he will go well," he said. Saturday's Shaftesbury Avenue (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Violate (Sebring) was not penalised for his victory.

Eastender draws widein Adelaide CupIn-form Tasmanian stayer Eastender (Tickets) has drawn a wide barrier for his first interstate assignment in the Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) at Morphettville on Monday. The gelding has won his past four starts including the Hobart and Launceston Cups (Gr 3, 2400m) and has drawn barrier 18 in a capacity field of 20 plus one emergency for the staying feature. The Barry Campbell-trained five-year-old is equal top weight for the $400,000 contest on 58 kilograms, along with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Fabrizio (High Chaparral), whom he chased down to win the Launceston Cup at his last start.

Cummings happy with condition of AviliusJames Cummings says Avilius (Pivotal) has enjoyed a faultless build-up for Saturday's Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington having won the Carlyon Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) in the past month."He's had a faultless campaign and this is a target race, his best opportunity to win a Group 1 since arriving in Australia last year," Cummings said. “The horses on Saturday will be peaking and there's some

fresh form going into the event, but he's had the right form and he's come out of the right races. Getting to Flemington again where he was able to win The Bart Cummings last preparation will suit him nicely, I think, and he's looking for 2000 metres all over off his effort last start.”

Hayes warns against discounting So Si Bon Muntahaa (Dansili) may well be Lindsay Park's best chance to further its impressive Australian Cup record at Flemington on Saturday but co-trainer Ben Hayes has warned against discounting stablemate So Si Bon (So You Think). The gelding returned to form last Saturday when narrowly beaten in the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and Hayes is confident the step to 2000 metres will be no hindrance. "It was a huge run in the Blamey,” he told Racing.com. “It was a run that looked to me like he was crying out for 2000 (metres) and if you look back through his form, he's got good form over 2000 with a third in the Guineas at Rosehill and he's Group 2-placed over 2000 as well. He could run a big race."

Eminent arrives safely in AustraliaBritish import Eminent (Frankel) has reportedly taken the trip to Sydney in his stride as he settles in for two weeks quarantine at Canterbury. Trained by seven-time Olympian and dual gold medal-winning Eventing star Sir Mark Todd, Eminent is in the care of former New Zealand jockey Bruce Herd while the trainer is expected to arrive later this week. "He only lost about 8 kilograms on the trip, he's eating well and drinking well,'' Herd told Racing NSW. "It didn't seem to affect him at all. He's a beautiful moving horse who will really appreciate the speed on over here.” Eminent is owned by Sir Peter Vela and is expected to continue on to New Zealand and take up stud duties at the end of his racing career.

Jockey Tye Angland confirmed quadriplegicMultiple Group 1-winning jockey Tye Angland has been confirmed a quadriplegic as a result of injuries he suffered in a fall in Hong Kong. Angland damaged his spinal cord in the incident at Sha Tin on November 25 when his mount stumbled coming out of the barriers. After undergoing surgery in Hong Kong, Angland came home to Sydney just before Christmas and had further surgery at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital. The 29-year-old is in the Royal Rehabilitation Centre in Sydney where he is continuing treatment and rehabilitation. Angland reportedly has some movement in his arms but is unable to walk.

Rory Hutchings returnsto New ZealandJockey Rory Hutchings has returned to New Zealand after a four year stint in Sydney. The premier Sydney apprentice in 2015/16, Hutchings has endured battles with his weight and says it will be a month before he returns to the saddle having had his last race ride on January 12. “I am a bit heavy at the minute, so I will just be riding work and getting my weight down until then,” Hutchings said. “I will be based at Matamata to start with, living with my parents, so that is where I am going to be riding work until I get back to the races. I would like to spread myself around and ride for quite a few stables. If I can get back riding around 56 kilograms again, that is a big advantage.”

RAD Board variesWalker suspensionMichael Walker has had a small reduction in a careless riding suspension but will still miss this weekend’s Randwick Guineas meeting. Aquis Farm’s retained jockey lodged an appeal against the severity of a 10-meeting careless riding ban incurred at Sandown last Wednesday, but The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board only varied the penalty to nine meetings, leaving him ineligible to take up his rides on Aquis-raced youngsters Dubious (Not A Single Doubt) and Vincere Volare (I Am Invincible) in their respective juvenile contests. Walker's suspension will end on Sunday.

Currie inquiry facesfurther delayAn inquiry into allegations against Toowoomba trainer Ben Currie scheduled for next week could be further delayed after his lawyers returned to the Supreme Court. Currie was listed to appear at a Queensland Racing Integrity Commission stewards inquiry on Monday to face 28 charges from a raid on his stables last April. His lawyers had sought a judicial review the previous Friday week to clear up whether they could attend Monday's inquiry. After the judgment QRIC wrote to Currie's lawyers saying one of them would be admitted with Currie but there would be restrictions on what part they could play in the hearing. Currie's lawyers filed an application to the Supreme Court in Brisbane on Tuesday afternoon seeking another judicial review in which they will argue the restrictions are overly oppressive.

VRC to rival Golden Slipper? The VRC Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), which lost its Group 1 status in 2005, could be revived as a multi-million-dollar elite level feature to rival the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). The idea was put forward by Victoria Racing Club director Michael Ramsden as the club looks to continue to re-energise the autumn programme. "I've got a general view - which is a personal view - to make the Sires' Produce over 1200 metres and a sort of $3.5 million race, which will make things interesting," Ramsden told RSN927's Racing Pulse. "Flemington hasn't really got a strong two-year-old race. We've sort of chatted about it at racing sub-committee level. It's just a different idea.”

Racing.com Park to goahead on ThursdayRacing will go ahead at Racing.com Park on Thursday night after two important roads to the course at Nar Nar Goon were reopened on yesterday following a brush with the major bushfire. "Thursday night is no issue at all," Pakenham Racing Club chief executive Michael Hodge told Racing.com. "All signs are positive - the main one being the reopening this morning of the Princes Freeway and also Nar Nar Goon-Longwarry Road, which is our obvious entrance

into the Pakenham racecourse. The racecourse is no longer land-locked as of this (Tuesday) morning.”

Les Carlyon goneAustralian journalism giant Les Carlyon passed away on Monday, aged 76. Twice a Walkley Award winner, Carlyon held the position of editor of The Age, as well as editor-in-chief of The Herald and Weekly Times Ltd. Carlyon was once described by fellow Hall of Fame member, the late Colin Hayes, as “this country’s finest and most sensitive observer of racing”, before being inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame himself in 2016 for his contribution to broadcasting and documenting the history of racing. Carlyon had battled recurring pneumonia throughout his life, an illness that ultimately took his life.

Melody Belle confirmed for more Group 1 glory

Fortuna Syndications have confirmed Melody Belle (Commands) will shoot for her sixth Group 1 in the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie on Saturday after pleasing her connections in trackwork at Matamata yesterday. The Jamie Richards-trained four-year-old will also be looking for her third top-flight victory in succession after taking out the Waikato Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) and WFA Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) earlier this year. “Melody Belle has come through her Group 1 victory at Otaki in great style and her gallop at Matamata this morning in the hands of race day rider Opie Bosson was very good,” Fortuna Syndicate manager John Galvin said. “Opie is happy, trainer Jamie Richards is happy, she is ready to go.”

Sydney invasion imminent for Latta runnerThe Lisa Latta-trained Platinum Invador (Redwood) ran on well to finish third in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Ellerslie on Saturday and his connections have now shifted their focus towards Australia with the gelding. “It was a really good run and a big effort for the horse to back-up three times in two weeks, with two trips to Auckland,” she said. “He went straight to the paddock on Sunday, for a week. We are thinking of the Australian Derby, we obviously want to give him a week off and get him back into the stable and see how he has come through (the race).” Latta said he could potentially contest the Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) as a lead in to the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), but will wait until he returns to her stable before finalising a decision.

Gundown ready for Auckland Cup tiltGundown (High Chaparral) will be on the hunt for his first victory at stakes level on Saturday when he lines up in the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Ellerslie. The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained gelding was runner-up at Group level in the Manawatu Classic (Gr 3, 2000m) and Championship Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) last season and his connections are hoping he can go one better on Saturday. “He looks like a horse that might get the Auckland Cup distance,” Baker said. “He is a promising young stayer and he’s bred to stay. He’s had a good background this season, so he’s done the mileage, he’s very fit.”

Ladies First sidelinedLast year’s Auckland Cup winner Ladies First (Dylan Thomas) has suffered a setback that will see her autumn campaign shelved. The Allan Sharrock-trained mare had been on a path to the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) but pulled up sore after finishing tenth in the WFA Classic (Gr 1, 1600m). “It’s a minor strain in a tendon, so she will probably have three months to get over it,” Sharrock said. “With three months off, she will be fine. She had come up really, really well and I was quite excited. Her run at Otaki was probably a little bit bemusing. It was a pass, but it wasn’t what I wanted. Then on Sunday she was sore and I thought it might have been a stone bruise but it turns out it was a slight tear in the tendon.”

Ballymore pair mootedfor Sydney tripCo-trainers Michael Moroney and Pam Gerard are eyeing autumn Sydney Classic targets with two of their runners after pleasing performances at Ellerslie on Saturday. Pinmedown (Pins) was victorious in the Sunline Vase (Gr 3, 2100m) and will now head to Trentham later this month to contest the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m). “Our plan all the way through has been to get her across (to Australia) for something like the Australian Oaks,” Moroney said. “The New Zealand Oaks form usually reads quite well for that. It doesn’t look that strong a year to us, so if she performs well enough the Oaks will be on the cards.” Moroney was also pleased with Arrogant (Ocean Park), who could join his stablemate across the Tasman with the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) and Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) likely targets.

Avondale cancelledThe Avondale races on Thursday have been cancelled due to a lack of entries. The cancellation continues a worrying trend for the Auckland-based track, with just 61 starters greeting the starter across eight races at the club’s previous meeting on February 20. There are additional races to be added to Matamata and Te Aroha meetings next week.

Callan banking on Country Star to spark formNeil Callan will be hoping Country Star (Starcraft) can hand him his 11th winner of the season when he rides the talented gelding in the Arsenal Handicap (6f) at Happy Valley today. Country Star has five wins already in this his debut campaign. That tally equates to 50 per cent of Callan’s entire haul for the season. His 10 wins have been tough to accrue and represent a noticeable drop away from the kind of pace he maintained when securing 47 wins and third place in the premiership just two seasons ago. “It’s a little bit frustrating because I always want more and I want to be further up the table,” Callan said. “It comes down to getting the right runs, the right draws, and getting on the right horses at the right time. Sometimes that’s happened for me this season and sometimes it hasn’t.”

Calyx to be given Commonwealth Cup entryCoventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f ) winner Calyx (Kingman) is to be given an entry in the Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f ) at Royal Ascot in June as connections assess if his future lies over sprint distances. The exciting juvenile suffered a setback which curtailed last year’s campaign but has reportedly been training well recently. “We're going to look between seven furlongs and a mile for Calyx,” trainer John Gosden said. “He comes out of the gate and travels strongly but he'll also have an entry in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup. We're keeping our mind open as he's a big powerful fast horse and we'll have him well entered up. He's done really well over winter and we'll listen to him as to which way we go."

Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up catalogue onlineThe catalogue for the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale, which takes place from April 15-17, has been released, with all 147 lots eligible for the new £15,000 Craven Breeze-Up Bonus. The catalogue numbers 19 two-year-olds out of Group or Listed winning mares, including the Oasis Dream (Green Desert) filly out of EP Taylor Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) winner Lahaleeb (Redback) and the War Front (Danzig) colt out of the Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) winner Quarter Moon (Sadler’s Wells), who is a half-brother to Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) winner Diamondsandrubies (Fastnet Rock).

Guineas entries releasedAll the top two-year-old colts of 2018 are among the entries for the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket on May 4, including Champion Two-Year-Old Too Darn Hot (Dubawi). Other notable names among the 75 strong list include Quorto (Dubawi), Persian Moon (Kingman) and Ten Sovereigns (No Nay Never). Meanwhile, the Japanese-owned and American-trained The Mackem Bullet (Society Rock) spearheads 58 entries for the 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) the following day.

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Americain (Dynaformer) will transfer to Daisy Hill as its foundation

stallion for the 2019 breeding season after spending seven years at Swettenham Stud.

Daisy Hill’s Shane Freeman confirmed the change of stud farm for the rising 15-year-old stallion at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale yesterday.

“We are excited to have him here as our foundation stallion. We are also excited the way Costello is racing … and it could cement the horse on the map,” Freeman said.

“He suits breeders who are willing to give a horse time, the three- and four-year-old races over a bit of distance. We think he can do the job for us.”

Swettenham Stud principal Adam Sangster said Americain had thrived in a new environment since moving to Daisy Hill in December which,

@anz_news

in part, led to the decision for him to stand him at the Doreen property.

“He didn’t go back to America last year and he needed to settle a little bit as he had been travelling backwards and forwards (to the US) four times, so we thought the best thing was to send him to Daisy Hill af the end of the covering season,” Sangster told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“We haven’t lost faith in the horse at all. Of course, he only arrived in Australia as a five-year-old himself and his horses are only four and a half.

“I bred Costello who has had two nice wins and is heading to the Derby and I think it is a rather fitting that he is back with the owners.

“Sam Matthews and I will still be fielding calls for Americain but we are using Daisy Hill’s facility to keep him calm.”

Americain will stand for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

Al Maher to stand at Stockwell Thoroughbreds

Multiple Group 1-winning producer Al Maher (Danehill) is heading to Victoria to stand at Stockwell Stud for the 2019 breeding season.

A winner of the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) during his race career, Al Maher will move to the Diggers Rest based operation having stood the previous season at Aquis Farm on behalf of Emirates Park, who bred and raced the son of Danehill (Danzig).

“We have been petitioning Emirates Park over the years to send him down to us, as he is just beautifully placed here in Victoria.” Stockwell Thoroughbreds’ Mike Becker said.

“He is a proven producer of stakes and group performers, with 34 individual stakes performers and four heralded Group 1 winners. Coupled with a blue blood pedigree, he stamps his stock and produces great types, highly regarded by the best judges.

“In my opinion he is the most underrated stallion in Australia for the last five or six years

with what he has done on the racetrack and through the sales ring. He is a horse that we, like so many breeders, have always admired, and he ticks all the boxes.

“He will be arriving shortly at the farm, and we welcome all breeders to come out to visit the stud for an inspection.”

Al Maher has produced four Group 1 winners to date; Delicacy, Fat Al, Diamond Drille and Champion Two-Year-Old colt Almalad, and Becker believes that the entire’s pedigree will compliment Victoria’s broodmare band.

“Al Maher is still a brilliant breeder, highly fertile with a great libido. He can comfortably cover three mares a day and still positively hit 90 per cent plus – he loves his job,” Becker said.

“Having always been managed professionally throughout his stud career, he is a gentleman to work with and he will be a delight to have around the place. He is now proving himself as a broodmare sire with his daughters being very successful.

“He is not a high maintenance horse; a pretty chilled sort of customer and we are thrilled for all the Victorian breeders, that we finally got our hands on him.

“He will be well suited to the diverse group of broodmares residing in Victoria, who are free of Danehill blood, however the duplication of the Danehill line has also proven to work well. He has had top nicks with Canny Lad, Scenic and Royal Academy.”

Al Maher will stand at Stockwell Stud for a fee of $8,000 (plus GST) in 2019.

Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria president James O’Brien has confirmed that the push from some Victorian breeders to change the

Inglis Premier Sale date to go head-to-head with New Zealand Bloodstock’s Karaka in January has been scuttled.

“That’s definitely off the agenda now but, of course, we will remain keen to liaise with Inglis in terms of any tweaks which can be made to the Premier Sale to the benefit of all,” O’Brien said. “That’s something which will happen after the dust has settled from this week.”

That’s good news for Inglis managing director Mark Webster who said his own research indicated such a clash wouldn’t be viable.

“Speaking to international buyers and many prominent trainers, the view was that many of them simply wouldn’t come here if the two sales clashed,” Webster said.

Webster said the process of sales reviews was ongoing and the views of major vendors were always canvassed.

“We get daily feedback from major clients and I will have a number of one-on-one and one-on-two meetings with vendors over the coming days,” he added. “Plus, the Inglis team will meet for the usual post sale review.”

Webster said that the review of February’s Classic Sale concluded that the number of horses offered was “about right”, but that the company would look at the structure and set-up of the opening Saturday night session.

Everyone wants astallion prospect orto keep it in the family!

You can pay a million dollars or more for a “sexy” colt at Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale or Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January in the quest for the next super stallion. Or you might pay that and more buying all or part of an early season two-year-old winner.

Alternatively, you can try your hand and your luck at a more realistic price point which is the approach taken by Chris Bromley. Bromley’s CB Bloodstock combined with Caulfield trainer Mick Price to buy a Snitzel colt for $300,000. Offered by Blue Gum Farm on behalf of Robert Crabtree’s Dorrington Farm, the colt is the second foal out of Group 3 winner My Sabeel.

“I bought him for a colt’s syndicate of my clients,” Bromley said. “He’s the right type who will get every chance to make it with the right trainer (Mick Price). And at that figure, you’re a realistic chance to return the purchase price

via prize-money. He’s not heavy this colt, he’s good on his feet and had lots going for him in my view.”

Another Caulfield trainer Colin Little swooped just once at the sale to secure the Three Bridges Thoroughbreds offered Lot 120 for $250,000. The Brazen Beau filly is out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Colerne, who won at her only two starts for Little. Three Bridges offered her on behalf of former VRC chairman and long time Little client Rod Fitzroy.

Training cousins Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra were certainly active with seven Book 1 purchases, which came as no surprise on the back of their excellent results in 2018-2019. Those results included Group 1 success at either end of the spectrum - with Aristia in the VRC Oaks and with Booker in the Oakleigh Plate.

For the trivia buffs, that unusual double hadn’t been completed since 1999-2000 when John Hawkes won each with Tributes and Sports; a time at which a young Zahra was employed at the stable.

And the winneris Jonathan D’Arcy

As is the case with any sale, attendees do absorb an endless recitation of cliches which would rival - in almost song like fashion - McDonald’s “two all beef patties, special sauce etc…”

“Ladies and gentlemen, we present a lovely, athletic running colt from a running mare from a running family. The stallion needs no introduction but (post demise) they’re not making any more of them. All the good judges are on him. I am going to sell him…very well bought sir…”

Thus, it was refreshing to hear D’Arcy describe Let’s Elope, the grand-dam of Lot 242, as “having won everything bar the Stawell Gift.”

D’Arcy also took the silver with “a big announcement, a big change to this one ladies and gentlemen” delivered with great earnestness. “He’s a colt,” he said in reference to Lot 428 who was mistakenly catalogued as a filly.

Mind you, the indefatigable Peter Heaney is entitled to special mention for “this isn’t the Echuca horse sale” when things were going awry through the sale of one lot, and for suggesting that colleague Matt Scown might “look like a bag of chaff” after he assisted in luring one reluctant yearling through the selling ring doors. And well played to Brett Gilding and Bryce Bevan who made an auspicious auctioneering debut at a major sale.

D’Arcy revealed that he would be heading to Hong Kong, next week, on an Inglis goodwill mission ahead of next month’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Speaking of Hong Kong, the whisper was strong through the week that restrictions on the movement of horses between Hong Kong and Australia would be eased before the triple Group 1 Champions Day at Sha Tin on April 28. This would allow a prospective two or three Australian horses to compete with the list of likely contenders well and truly headed by Santa Ana Lane.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club, last week, announced that the minimum rating requirement to import previously raced horses had been reduced from 70 to 68 - a move widely applauded by bloodstock agents.

Racing – and indeed the world – has changed greatly in the past 135 years but way back in 1884 a stallion named Malua (St.

Albans) journeyed by ship from Tasmania to mainland Australia to win a remarkable series of important races in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne. Those races ranged in distance from the five and a half furlongs of the Oakleigh Plate to the two miles of the VRC Melbourne Cup in which he triumphed under 9st 9lb (61.25 kilograms).

While Tasmanian-bred horses have since won a number of major events in Melbourne including the 1972 Melbourne Cup with Piping Lane (Lanesborough), last Saturday’s Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Mystic Journey (Needs Further) became the first Tasmanian-trained horse since Malua to win a Group 1 at Flemington, and she did it in style.

Well back on the inside until the home

turn, the Adam Trinder-trained Mystic Journey was sent through a gap by journeyman jockey Anthony Darmanin before shooting clear in the straight to defeat Hawkshot (Fiorente) by two and a quarter lengths, with Group 1-winning filly Amphitrite (Sebring) just a neck further back in third place, fractionally ahead of the fast finishing Ringerdingding (Sebring). The race time was 1:35.79 and the final 600m was run in 34.26.

Saturday’s victory was Mystic Journey’s ninth from 12 starts and her best since her last appearance in Melbourne in the spring when she impressed in taking out the Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley.

Mystic Journey is the fifth filly to defeat males in the Australian Guineas since it’s first running in 1989 and she follows distinguished company, starting with Triscay (Marscay) in 1991, Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice) in 2007, Shamrocker (O’Reilly) in 2011 and Mosheen

(Fastnet Rock) in 2012, each of which went on to enjoy at least one more success at the highest level. Mystic Journey is expected to have only one more start this autumn in the $5 million All-Star Mile (1600m) with connections stating her spring mission will be the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m).

Trainer Adam Trinder paid a bargain $11,000 to buy Mystic Journey for owner Wayne Roser at the 2017 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale, where she was consigned by Armidale Stud which raised her for Victoria-based breeders Ralph Zito, his wife Peta and friends Joe and Rhonda Cichello and John and Diane Button.

Breeding buffs will find Mystic Journey’s female pedigree fascinating and coming from the second crop of Armidale Stud’s young sire Needs Further (Encosta De Lago) she has certainly brought him to national attention.

A lightly raced winner of the ATC Carbine

Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), Gooree Stud-bred Needs Further has an impeccable pedigree being a half-brother to dual Group 1 winner and Darley Stud sire Hallowed Crown (Street Sense) out of Crowned Glory (Danehill), one of the best juvenile fillies of the 1999/2000 season when she won the VRC Bloodhorse Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and, more significantly, was runner up to Belle du Jour (Dehere) in a memorable Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Out of Significant Moment (Bletchingly), Crowned Glory is a half-sister to two earlier winners of the Australian Guineas in Baryshnikov (Kenmare) and champion sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram).

The genetic strength of Mystic Journey’s sire is matched by the bloodlines of her dam White Gold (Colombia), twice a winner over 1200m and 1400m and whose unraced sire, a one-time top priced yearling at the New Zealand National Sale, is by Zabeel from the legendary producer Eight Carat (Pieces of Eight).

White Gold’s other foals include the good Melbourne winner Leodoro (Jayemzed) and the unraced Oh So Gold (Savoire Vivre), dam of Mystic Journey’s three-quarter sister Mystical Pursuit (Needs Further), who is twice a Listed winner in Tasmania and an earner of $202,450 in prize-money to date.

Still to come for White Gold are Emerald Crown (Needs Further), an unraced sister to Mystic Journey, and a filly foaled last year by promising Victorian sire Fighting Sun (Northern Meteor).

Mystic Journey’s pedigree chart is dominated by linebreeding to Zabeel’s dam Lady Giselle (Nureyev) 4f x 4m supported by duplications of two other notable producers, Natalma (Native Dancer) and Special (Forli), while her dam White Gold is 3f x 4f to another influential mare in Klairessa (Klairon)

L’Anno d’Oro (Habitat), fourth dam of Mystic Journey, is an unplaced sister to champion European sprinter Habibti (Habitat) and is closely related to peerless producer Eight Carat and to another successful broodmare in Great Klaire (Great Nephew).

Humidor (Teofilo) and Western Australia’s Material Man (Vital Equine) are other top class racehorses to emerge from this outstanding female line in recent seasons.

VERDICT Enjoyable Success was placed twice last month and, with ZacPurton booked, figures very prominently in calculations.

However, his Hong Kong strike-rate stands at 0-20 and slight preference is forMONEY WINNER, who got his head in front at Sha Tin on New Year’s Day and hasremained in good form since then. Little Fantasy has a very modest strike-rate butprobably won’t be far away.

VERDICT Danny Shum’s 6yo DOLLAR REWARD is still seeking his firstHong Kong win but has been knocking firmly on the door in

recent months and is selected to make full use of his inside draw today. SuperLucky disappointed when last in action but his emphatic win in January is still quitefresh in the mind and he is second choice. Brave Command made no impact onhis debut but the booking of Zac Purton catches the eye today.

VERDICT Jolly Bountiful has strong claims if judged on his close thirdfrom a wide stall two starts ago but he was beaten at short odds

when last in action and this can go to speedy front-runner VERY SWEET ORANGE,who benefits both from the inside stall and Victor Wong’s very useful 7lb claim today.Wonderful Journey and Gift Of Lifeline are others to consider.

BETTING FORECAST: 3iE Master, 11-2iGallant Return, 6iSpecial Stars,13-2iCoby Oppa, 10iDiamond Rhyme, Harrier Jet, Waldorf, 14iDream ComeTrue, 16iAlcari, High Five, 20iRelentless Me, 25iCheeky Bee.

VERDICT E Master has strong claims after winning two of his opening fiveraces in Hong Kong and he should be competitive in this but the

vote goes to COBY OPPA who looked a cut above these when coming right awayfrom his field over 6f on the dirt last month. He looks capable of building on thatdespite the attentions of the handicapper. Gallant Return is getting his acttogether and should be on the premises at the business end.

VERDICT Music Addition is on a roll and should still have improvementto come after just four starts and he should be able to hold his

own in this grade but preference is for COUNTRY STAR who looks a future starhaving won five from eight and is capable of defying the latest 8lb rise. CaliforniaFortune ran his best race of the season last time out and has claims on the back ofthat.
