SYNOPSISThe design of a 10,000 Sqft. community center and
theater for the residents of Culver city
HISTORY IN CINEMAThe program is an extension to the rich history of Culver
City. Culver City contains various movie, editing and
productions studios, the biggest being Sony Picture
Studios. The two main components of the program are
two theaters. The first being an indoor cinema and the
second is a hybrid outdoor amphitheater and drive-in. The
program also contains classrooms to teach residents to
create an edit films. The design promotes scenes of seeing
and being scene throughout the site and building

SYNOPSISThe design of a 25,000 sqft. music school on Bunkerhill, in
Downtown Los Angeles.
SPACEA defining feature to the music school is space. Because of
the limited size of the program the form was molded to
create space not compliant to the traditional four walls, a
roof and a floor. The feeling of space, the familiar room,
was achieved through the manipulation of architectural
elements to enclosed what many would consider “outdoor”
space but still felt as though it were an extension of the
building.

site plansite plan
A semester long design of three different structures
encompassed on one site; a bus stop, housing for the
interim professors, and a film school.
SYNOPSIS
RESEARCH
An understanding of the site was the first crucial step to designing for
such a unique site. The project is located in West Oakland, California
next to the West Oakland BART station. A defining character to the Bay
Area is it’s mass transit system. One being the BART (light rail transit), the
other the bus system. Embracing these elements and acknowledging the
benefits and setbacks was needed to begin the design process.

LIGHT
Light was a crucial element in the housing. The
center cut through of the house was the main
circulatory atrium space that connected the
public and private areas of the house. Providing
light to this area was crucial. The cone-like
ends to the triangular cut-throughs provided
necessary light to the major areas of the house:
living room, dining room and master bedroom.
PLANS
SECTIONS
SYNOPSIS
Design 5 housing units for the year long interim
professors for the adjacent film school.
SHAPE
To break the conventional mold of the square
box, the use of the triangle created a dynamic
division between public and private spaces in
the housing.
PLANSPLANS
SYNOPSISDesign a film school housing a lecture hall, library, lab spaces and a studio lot.
LIGHT
The interlaced triangular shell plays with positive and negative space providing light into public spaces
like the offices and labs, while reducing the intrusion of light into other spaces like the lecture hall and
library. The cut-through in the building again allows natural light to enter the building. The main stairway
also acts as a light well allowing natural light to penetrate the center of a building where many of the
lounge areas are located for students to study and work.
SHAPEThe concrete shell of the building harkens back to the earlier designs of the interim professor housing
with interlaced triangular shapes. A similar cut-through in the building again provides the main stairway
circulation for the entire building.

Wooden Chair
Cabinetry for Homeless Halfway House
CONSTRUCTIONCONSTRUCTION
SYNOPSISCreate a chair entirely out of wood.
Wood joints and connections allowed
only.
CONCEPTOur team imagined a chair not
placed onto the site but was an
element of the site. We utilized the
tree, making the chair an extension
of it; a branch that extends out onto
the conrete planter.

SYNOPSIS
Create hanging space and storage
space for a homeless halfway house in
Berkeley, CA
COLORSThe colors were chosen to match
the colorful fences located in the
yard the children of the house play
in.
MATERIALThe hanging unit utilizes recycled
printing tubes to both reduce cost and
create an unique aesthetic
SPACE Because of the cramped nature of
the rooms we designed a narrow
wall unit that would rest behind
each bunk bed, giving each user
their own personal storage space
