GEE’S BEND QUILTEXPLORATION PROFESSOR ROBERT COWHERD

FALL 2010

THE QUILT EXPLORATION PROJECT WAS INTENDED FOR STUDENTS TO EXAMINE OBJECTS IN A DEEPER, MORE CRITICAL WAY. OBJECTS IN A DEEPER, MORE CRITICAL WAY. FOR ME, I SAW MY TWO DIMENSIONAL QUILT AS A THREE DIMENSIONAL OBJECT. I SAW THE PATTERN OF “L” SHAPED BEING LAYERED OVER ONE ANOTHER OVER AND OVER AGAIN TO CREATE THE TWO DIMENSIONAL VIEW. THESE “L” ‘S WERE PILED UPON EACH OTHER TO CREATE THE THREE TO CREATE THE THREE DIMENSIONAL OBJECT. A KEY COMPONNENT THIS CONSTRUCTION WAS THE CONCEPT OF MOVEMENT WITHIN OR AROUND A SPACE DEFINED BY THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF THE TWO DIMENSIONAL QUILT.

THIS PROJECT WAS TO BECOME AN INTEGRATED STUDIO FOR THE USE OF STUDENT IN BOTH THE ARCHITECTURE STUDENT IN BOTH THE ARCHITECTURE AND INDUSTRIAL DESIGN STUDIOS AT WENTWORTH. THE CONCEPT BEHIND MY DESIGN WAS FOR THE CONNECTOR TO BE A SPACE WHERE EACH STUDENT FELT LIKE A PART OF A LARGER WHOLE. THE STUDIO SPACE IS A LARGE OPEN ATRIUM THAT ALLOWS FOR PLENTY OF NATURAL THAT ALLOWS FOR PLENTY OF NATURAL LIGHT. THE HALLWAYS OVERLOOK THE STUDIO AND ACT AS LIGHT SCREENS FOR THE STUDIO TO FILTER THE SUNLIGHT.

A KEY CONCEPT TO THIS PROJECT WAS TO USE THE STRUCTURE FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. THE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. THE CIRCULATION SPACES IN THE CONNECTOR ACT AS A DOUBLE SCREEN FOR THE CENTRAL ATRIUM/ STUDIO. THIS AIR SPACE IS USED TO INSULATE THE STUDIO SPACE AND KEEP IT WARM IN THE WINTER AND IT WARM IN THE WINTER AND COOLER IN THE SUMMER.

THIS PAVILION WAS BUILT FOR TWO CLIENTS, HUBWAY AND ADVENTOUR, TO BE USED AS A SPACE FOR RENTING THEIR BICYCLES. THE CONCEPT WAS BICYCLES. THE CONCEPT WAS TO HAVE A SPACE IN WHICH THE EXPERIENCE WAS THE SAME AS THAT OF THE REST OF THE COMMONS. BYPASSERS COULD FREELY EXPERIENCE THE SPACE WITHOUT DETERING FROM THEIR ORIGINAL ROUTE. FROM THEIR ORIGINAL ROUTE.

LEARN-TO-SAIL CENTER ANTHONY’S PIER 4 BOSTON, MA ELIZABETH GHISELINE FALL 2011

THIS WAS A PROJECT USED TO INVESTIGATE TECTONIC ELEMENTS, METHODS, AND TECHNIQUES AND THE EFFECTS THEY HAVE ON A BUILDING’S FORM, STRUCTURE, PURPOSE, AND APPEARANCE. THE CONCEPT I USED TO DRIVE THIS PROJECT DEALT WITH THE FOUR VERY DIFFERENT EDGE CONDITIONS THAT INTERFACED THE PIER. ALL FOUR EDGES CONDITIONS THAT INTERFACED THE PIER. ALL FOUR EDGES HAD UNIQUE QUALITIES, BUT ALSO HAD QUALITIES THAT THEY SHARED WITH EACH OTHER. MY SAILING CENTER WAS TO BE THE PIECE THAT CONNECTED ALL FOUR EDGE CONDITIONS IN A UNIFYING AND SEAMLESS MANNER. THE BUILDING ALLOWED FOR THE BLENDING OF THE CONDITIONS TO CREATE A HARMONIOUS CONNECTION AMONGST BUILDING, LAND, WATER, HARMONIOUS CONNECTION AMONGST BUILDING, LAND, WATER, AND EDGE. THE BUILDING ONCLUDED CLASSROOMS, OFFICE SPACE, AN EVENT SPACE, AND A WATER-ACCESSIBLE BOAT STORAGE. THE BOAT STORAGE WAS A KEY PROGAM ELEMENT IN MY BLENDING OF CONDITIONS. IT ALLOWED FOR AN OVERLAP OF WATER TO LAND IN A VERY SIMPLE AND SUCCESSFUL MANNER.

THIS PROJECT WAS A CARTOGRAPHER’S STUDIO SPACE IN THE MIDDLE OF A 4,000 SQUARE FOOT OPEN MEADOW. MY CONCEPT WAS FOR THE BUILDING TO INTERACT WITH BOTH THE GROUND BUILDING TO INTERACT WITH BOTH THE GROUND PLANE AND ALSO THE PLANE CREATED BY THE TOP OF THE MEADOW GRASS. THE WAYS ONE WOULD ENTER AND EXIT THE BUILDING AND ALSO HOW ONE WOULD EXPERIENCE THE SPACES ARE INFLUENCED BY THE TWO VERY DESTINCT PLANES. THE KEY SPACE IS WHERE THE CARTOGRAPHER WOULD DO HIS MAPPING. THIS CARTOGRAPHER WOULD DO HIS MAPPING. THIS SPACE IS VERY INTIMATE AND IS CREATED BY THE CONTRAST BETWEEN THE GROUND AND GRASS PLANES.
