Executive Conference On Thursday, we had our annual executive conference. We spent considerable time planning ways that we can increas-ingly encourage students to aim high and achieve their personal best. Providing opportunities for students to reflect, evaluate and plan their next steps is something we see as important. This will be on show at next Tuesday’s Year 12 parent teacher conference, where many students will lead the conversation, highlighting areas they feel growth is needed. Mobile Phones At St Ives High School we believe in educating and promoting responsible use of mobile phone devices. We realise that most families may want their child to have a phone for reasons of safety. We have a unique drawing area, which means some students travel long distances to and from school. While we could implement a plan that separates students from their phone during the day, the disruption to our daily routine would be significant. It’s important to educate children around what responsible use feels and looks like each day. It is hoped that the skills they will learn here at St Ives will transpire into university and the workplace. We recognise that some students can be distracted by their phones in the classroom. To this end, we have clear guidelines to all students. Next week, each classroom will have a visible poster that will outline the teacher’s expectation around phone use. Phones should only been seen if there is explicit permis-sion given by the classroom teacher. Teachers may choose to confiscate mobile phones during the school day in cases of misuse. Please support us in assisting our students to be responsible users of technology. When wanting to contact your child at school we request that you call our School Office on 9144 1689 rather than contacting your child directly. If choosing to call your child on their mobile, it is highly likely that they will not pick up as their phone will be in their bag. Afternoon Buses to Gordon This year, we have been in regular contact with Transdev communicating our concerns. The buses are arriving later than previous years, even though the bus times on paper remain the same. We are aware of this and are continually requesting changes to ensure our students are getting home as soon as possible. In the most recent letter to Transdev, we give detail around the number of students we have travelling from Hornsby, Asquith, Mount Colah and other sub-urbs in our northern drawing area. We hope that we will see some change very soon. Many thanks for your patience. Congratulations Congratulations to our Open Girls Softball team who played Narrabeen Sports High School. Nicole C (Year 11) reported ‘We were highly successful and won the game 21-0. Everyone contributed to the game extremely well and we worked cohesively as a team. Our next game should be in the next couple weeks as we go further on into the competition. ’ Thanks to Mrs Moss for leading the team and for her report in this newsletter. GIRLS OPEN KNOCKOUT SOFTBALL ROUND 2 MATCH vs NARRABEEN SPORTS HS Our girls played an outstanding match on Tuesday 12 March, defeating Narrabeen Sports HS by a stunning 21-0. The team has continued to move from strength to strength since last year with the inclusion of three highly experienced Year 7 girls. Congratulation to Nicole C for scoring several home runs. Also, there was some very skilled batting from Sophie A and Alana C. We are very fortunate in-deed to have Keradyn E as our main pitcher who pitches at 90km/hr and up and coming Harriet C who pitches at 60km/hr and is only in Year 7! We are looking forward to our Round 3 match which is due to be played later in the month. Jenni Moss Softball Coach

YEAR 8 JAPANESE CLASS VISIT THE SYDNEY JAPANESE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL STUDENT COMMENTS

Noah K: On March the 8th, the Year 8 Japanese language class travelled to the Japanese International School in Terrey Hills for an excahgne program St Ives High School was doing. When our class first arrived, we were greeted by the Japanese school students and teachers and through the day we did several activities with them. Some of the activities include: choreographing a dance, walking on stilts, playing a Japanese instrument, flying paper airplanes and even making our own lunch. Al in all the excursion was a blast and I’m pretty sure we all enjoyed our day at their school. Carmella R: The Japanese excursion was really exciting and interesting throughout the whole day. The sec-ond we arrived the Japanese students and teachers were wo welcoming and nice. We had many amazing activities with the year groups 5-8. We did games and even learned how to play a song on a traditional Japanese instrument. We were given good which was really delicious. It was sad to leave but that day was certainly one to remember. Seth A: On the 8th day of March 2018 Year 8 Japanese went to Japanese International School Terrey Hills, we all had a great time. We met Japanese students, saw an insight at Japanese schools. First we made a dance in groups of about five, then we saw Japanese games, and had a delicious lunch, rice with soup and some garnishes. We also saw traditional Japanese instruments and learnt a song called ‘Sakura’ on it. My favourite part was the food. I loved the Japanese Excursion and hope we can go there another time.

YEAR 7 HISTORY INCURSION

The History Incursion was held on Thursday 14 March and Friday 15 March. The day consisted of representatives from Macquarie University’s Museum of Ancient Cultures. One of the presenters, Gillian, is doing a PHD in Egyptology and describes her work. “We are running archaeology workshops that the students get to have a go at doing activities that replicate the work of archaeologists. We are focusing on Ancient Egypt and Rome. The students also get to handle the real artefacts from the Museum at Macquarie.” Students found the day to be delightful and insightful. Here are some quotes from the students about the activities they completed -

We were observing different ancient objects. It’s very hands on and we are learning a lot. Hanna P, Eva B, Mathilde B

We have been looking at bones and seeing if they’re male or female. We also sifted through sand trying to find objects that would be useful for an investigation. Emma G

We learnt how to write words in hieroglyphs and discovered different pieces of pottery. I enjoyed it very much. Yoyo X

We’ve learnt a lot about artefacts and their different uses. Everyone had a different opinion on what the artefact was used for. Declan R and Hana E

Thank you to the team at Macquarie University for providing an invaluable learning experience. Adrian Zaboklicki HSIE Teacher Year Adviser, Year 7
