The Society of Theatrical Angels, Gallivants, Enthusiasts, Inc., was founded in 1977 and remains a group of dedicated patrons. S.T.A.G.E., Inc., memberships provide support for UNI theatre students in small ways by funding some of the food for strike nights and in more academic ways by helping fund student trips to Minneapolis or Chicago theaters. Most important, however, the majority of the funds collected in the annual drive provide scholarships to students of the UNI Department of Theatre. Today’s graduate typically faces an enormous debt load of school loans, and the S.T.A.G.E., Inc., patrons make it possible to reduce some of that burden as our graduates pursue careers in the arts. One hundred percent of the membership contributions is spent on student support.
Full memberships begin at only $20 per year.
If you believe in UNI’s theatre program and want to help support it, join S.T.A.G.E., Inc., today.

Welcome to the Strayer-Wood Theatre 2009-10 season! Tonight’s performance touches on issues of discovery and growth. Even though it’s set in another time in history- another time when fathers were away at war- I bet many of you can think back to times when you were uncertain about your place in the world and your sense of direction. Tonight you’ll be reminded that the guidance that comes from family, friends and occasionally from unexpected places can help you find your path again- and maybe reveal new paths.
Strange and interesting goings-on next door in our large theatre, as we continue work on Marat/Sade, our next offering. Visual artist Cat Chow is bringing her unique interpretation to the costumes, and the students and faculty working on the other aspects are discovering a complex landscape of ideas in this dynamic script. Get ready for an in your face exploration of politics, history and power.
Thanks so much for being with us!

From the Artistic Director
The mission of the Department of Theatre is to create theatre which excites, and which illuminates the human condition in ways that are relevant to students, audiences, community members, teachers and guest artists. To this end, the department offers coursework and productions that are diverse, creative and participatory, serving students who want to prepare for a life in the theatre and also students who want to prepare a place for theatre in their lives. We create theatre and, in this process, educate.

When closely examined, A.R. Gurney has written an incredibly tight script that becomes ever more apparent throughout the rehearsal process. Although he sets the play in 1945 and on the Canadian shores of Lake Erie, the events of this play could easily be placed in 2009 on the shores of Lake Okoboji. It could easily be placed in your community where there may be a wife or a husband suddenly consumed with the sole responsibility of running a household, bills, and the raising of children as they await the return of their spouse from a long drawn out war.
What I Did Last Summer could perhaps be placed in your home. As parents we think we know what is best (or what we perceive to be best) for our children. We share our knowledge, experiences, talents and even mistakes with our children in order that they may achieve their dreams with the least resistance possible. And when doing so it’s not unusual to receive the “look.” The “look” that politely says “Thanks, but no thanks.” I know that look. I gave it to my mother many times, many years ago. Ultimately however, we must trust ourselves and our children to make decisions that will be best for them. Under the best of circumstances we may even learn from each other.
What I Did Last Summer is a memory play, a coming of age story. Having been raised on the shores of Lake Erie, I have had the opportunity to revisit my childhood where the lake and the shoreline were my friends and often my escape. Like Charlie, my memories are vivid, yet selective. There are days I think I am still coming of age as I continue to discover who I am, what I should do, and where I belong. Life is journey, as is our play. Welcome and enjoy.
