tv Fathom10 commissioned for, among others,
• Shipboard familiarisation• Unberthing, berthing and anchoring procedures• Basic chartwork: setting courses, position fixing & calculating ETA’s• Identifying terrestrial aids to navigation: channel buoys and
lighthouses• Pre-sailing checks: Bridge equipment, ME’s, steering gear and
requisite sailing information• Application of Colregs & basic radar operation / radar plotting• Hand/manual steering; switching to auto-pilot• Performing watchkeeping & lookout duties• Basic weather reporting for entry into Deck log: Wind, barometer,
wind direction and speed, air and sea temperatures • Emergencies, e.g. MoB; Fire in ME compartment• General onboard, practical activities• Radio communication (VHF Ch 12) • Supplementing AB/OS and Oiler/Wiper Course
CHALLENGES•Placing our female students at sea• Paucity of cadet beths creates a bottle neck effect (unemployment)• Attracting the right calibre lecturing staff (Master’s degree & Master Unlimited / Chief Engineer CoC)• Non-recognition of CoC by CPUT (SAQA evaluation ?)• Sourcing funding to develop lecturing staff abroad to Master’s degree level • Updating the TRANSAS simulator to satisfy the revised STCW Manila requirements • No dedicated, SAMSA accredited, MEWT to integrate theoretical & practical training
