BMD Constructions has experience delivering terminal expansions, wharf refurbishments and ocean outfalls across Australia.

rELEvANT ExPErIENCE

BMD Constructions was engaged to design and construct the Materials Offloading Facility as part of early works to facilitate the delivery of pre-constructed modules making up the Australian Pacific LNG plant.

The works involved the design and construction of a Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro), Lift-on Lift-off (Lo-Lo) wharf including suitable heavy pavement construction and associated electrical and firewater systems as required by an international port.

Early understanding of the isolation that comes with building on an island, and the demand placed on Gladstone suppliers during the peak of construction of three major gas facilities, allowed the project team to develop procurement systems which were managed through alternative marine logistics. This was key to allowing the project to be completed in line with the client’s stretch target, well ahead of the contractual requirements and achieved client recognition from every level.

Safety was not compromised, completing in-excess of 300,000 hours LTI free.

Overall BMD developed an excellent working relationship with Bechtel exceeding their safety, quality and operational protocols within a challenging environment.

BMD Constructions was originally engaged to deliver the client’s pre-reclamation, quarry and reclamation contract as part of the overall expansion. Works largely involved the reclamation of 10.2 hectares of land including the excavation, processing and hauling of 1.3Mt of material.

During the performance of the original contract, BMD Constructions was awarded additional contracts comprising of the Onshore Civil Works and General Services Contract. The additional works included the construction of the concrete foundations, washdown slabs, underground conduit and services installation and site facilities maintenance and management.

BMD Constructions was awarded an additional $125 million in contracts as a result of performance, safety initiatives, management and completing in excess of 650,000 hours LTI free.

After three years of construction, the completion of the major coal terminal expansion not only delivered to the highest technical standards but also placed staff and local businesses first.

Commissioned in the early 1970s, the Christies Beach Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) receives and treats wastewater from surrounding communities and businesses. During 2009, SA Water undertook a major upgrade of the plant to increase capacity and meet the expected growth of the area.

Part of the overall upgrade, was the construction of a new outfall to discharge excess treated effluent in line with new environmental protection guidelines. The pipeline is partially buried on the sea floor and extends some 650m from the shore into the Gulf of St Vincent.

The team adopted a ‘J’ curve pipe configuration involving smaller pipe strings that overcame steep on-site grade issues and could be better handled within the limited site area.

An innovative delivery method was established that involved a 180m temporary bridge, adjacent sheet pile cofferdam, and shore-based winch pulling through an offshore anchor.

Executed a well planned launch sequence that continued without interruption for seven days until pipe lay in its final position on the seabed.

Abbot Point is located 25 kilometres north of Bowen, at the northern end of the Galilee and Bowen coal basins.

The X50 expansion of Abbot Point Coal Terminal has increased annual throughput of coal exports to 50 million tonnes and effectively duplicated the existing terminal infrastructure.

BMD Constructions delivered all onshore civil and concrete work, under the contract which included a new machinery bund, in-loading conveyors, out-loading conveyors, transfer towers, surge bin, major drainage structures, services installations, access roads and bridges.

Additional scope included six single span reinforced concrete bridges; 220,000m3 bulk earthworks 145,000m3 drill and blast; 69,250m3 imported fill and 3.6km of polyethylene water.

BMD Constructions also participated in the client’s local employment initiative which secured placement for local indigenous trainees.

Based on performance, BMD Constructions was awarded additional contracts as part of the overall X50 Expansion project.

wyndham harbour Werribee South, vIC, $58m

Wyndham harbour Pty Ltd June 2011 - August 2014

Wyndham Harbour is the single largest marina in Port Phillip Bay. The scope of works include the construction of two VicRoads intersections, five stages of subdivision, three kilometres of breakwater, 149,000m³ of dredging, foreshore protection and beach construction.

BMD entered into an early contractor involvement (ECI) period with Wyndham Harbour in order to review the concept design and provide a more practicable and affordable solution. In order to achieve this, BMD were given access to the client’s consultants engaged for the project. After successfully demonstrating value for money, BMD then entered into a D&C contract with the client.

Successful management of scope changes to the foreshore including revised design and works methodology. This also included the protection of endangered vegetation and an underground aquifer.

Innovative use of dewatering technology from the USA to manage the reuse of dredge material on site. Created cost saving opportunities for both the client and BMD by challenging the design.

The Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT) is located at the Port of Hay Point, 38 kilometres south of Mackay, Queensland. In 2004 the terminal commenced its seventh expansion (DBCT 7X) to increase the terminal’s export capacity.

BMD Constructions was engaged to construct machinery Bund 5A. After achieving exceptional results, BMD was invited to tender on a sole source basis for many additional contracts.

Final works included Bunds 4A, 5A, 6, Access Road and Hay Point Road Conveyor Underpass, Surge Bin SB3 Reclamation Works and Final Site Wide Civil Works - Stage 2.

BMD scored 96% compliance on Connell Hatch Safety Audit (90% benchmark). All progressive handovers and completion dates were achieved.

The team achieved 500,000 hours Lost Time Injury Free and accredited with the Australian Government Building and Construction OHS Scheme.

The project achieved winner of the 2009 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards.

Port botany container Terminal Expansion, Sydney, NSW, $57m

Patrick Corporation October 2004 - March 2010

As part of an ongoing initiative to work continuously for greater efficiency and competitiveness, Patrick Corporation elected to reconfigure operations within the boundary of its Port Botany Container Terminal.

Initially, BMD Constructions was awarded a $15 million contract to upgrade pavement and services, and construct rails for remote gantries and associated roadworks and earthworks. In recognition of the positive working relationship that ensued, subsequent contracts were awarded totalling $57 million.

Working within the container terminal, BMD Constructions was subject to strict security and entry restrictions in line with the Maritime Transport Security Act.

The project team achieved cost savings through alternative dowel cradle system for heavy duty pavements; recycling surplus sand and roadbase; backforming of inground overhead gantry crane beams; and alternative joint service trench sections.

The project is located at the former BHP Newcastle site, which was established in 1915 and ceased production in 1999.

The project at Mayfield Wharf involved the refurbishment of the dilapidated 265m long BHP Ore Wharf No.5, which will result in the site becoming a multipurpose wharf facility catering for bulk goods, break bulk and containers.

BMD Constructions was awarded the $29 million wharf refurbishment and hardstand construction contract for the Newcastle Port Corporation in late 2008.

Working within an operational port facility, BMD Constructions was engaged to reconstruct a severely dilapidated 265 metre long industrial wharf and rehabilitate 10,000m2 of contaminated land.

Notably, the project team designed an innovative modular falsework system that accelerated the construction program and met tight environmental and safety controls for both on land and over water works.

BMD Constructions safety performance across all packages was exemplary, including the way in which the onsite project team embraced the project’s safety standards with a strong commitment at all times, and the BMD Constructions contract man hours were a significant contribution to the first million hours LTI free worked on the DBCT 7x Project.
