EVENTS REPORT Introduction The Electrical Engineers Association (EEA) was started as an

effort to make engineering a passion rather than letting it

remain a monotonous way of life. It was one of the premier

branch associations to be started in the history of the

institute. Since then it has become an integral part of the

Electrical Engineering Department. From a small beginning it

has come a long way in participating in various issues

pertaining to Electrical and Electronics Engineering. It has

been involved in organizing various activities ranging from

various mock tests to seminars.

The EEA has always been a major contributor towards

organizing NIT Calicut’s technical festival, Tathva. Its EEA is a

student friendly association and has always aimed at

promoting the interests of the students. Its main focus has

always been to uplift engineering standards.

This is an archive of reports of events conducted by EEA in the

previous academic year. A tentative list of events planned to

be conducted by EEA in the upcoming future is also listed

towards the end.

OVERVIEW

The subject of electrical and electronics engineering requires students to have a strong

understanding of the fundamental principles of electricity and the ability to apply them

for finding solutions to real life engineering problems. They also need hands on

experience to complement their theoretical knowledge. In order to achieve this,

Electrical Engineers Association, NIT Calicut decided to conduct a summer camp for the

present second years.

The camp was a resounding success with more than fifty students registering for the

camp. The camp was held from 7th July to 25th

July and the forty students who

attended the camp were extremely satisfied with the scope and depth of the matter

that was taught. Numerous components were purchased and distributed to the students

and classes were taken on a wide array of topics ranging from microcontroller

programming and interfacing to high voltage applications.

PROJECTS DEVELOPED

The summer camp helped to motivate and inspire the students to come up with a large number of

project ideas, many of which are under construction and some of which have already been completed.

Here we present a list of some of the most significant projects.

Completed Projects

1. Slayer Exciter: The slayer exciter is a solid state Tesla coil that produces at the

lower end of the high voltage spectrum at extremely high frequencies and works on

the principle of magnified resonance transformation. The device is currently being

researched by our team to use in wireless energy transmission for fluorescent

lighting purposes.

2. Plasma Speaker: This is a type of speaker that works by varying air pressure using

a high voltage spark gap. The design that we adopted uses a 555 timer IC to produce

a PWM signal that is modulated with an audio signal. This PWM signal is given to a

fly back transformer which creates an ark between the spark gaps. The variation in

width and temperature of the ark by the PWM signal produces sound.

3. Mouse Controlled Robotic Arm: A custom made robotic arm is controlled by a

PS/2 mouse in Arduino UNO. The codes, including the interfacing of the mouse has

been done in Arduino itself. The arm consists of two servos and a High-torque

motor which is driven by L2938 IC. All connections were soldered into a compact

module on a dotted board for mobility.

Page 15: Department of Electrical Engineering · • Electrical Aptitude Test 2017. SUMMER CAMP 2015 REPORT An EEA initiative AUGUST 3, 2015 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION NIT Calicut. OVERVIEW

Projects under development

4. Bluetooth Controlled Robot: This project uses an arduino board interfaced with a HC-

05 Bluetooth module to control a robot. The move commands are send via an android

application. The motor IC LM32D is used to drive the motors of the robot.

5. Reaction Time Tester: A random blink of an led, on a 3x3 matrix along with a 3x3 array

of buttons to capture the user’s response were soldered into a dotted board. The setup

could calculate the player’s reaction time to touch the button corresponding to the random

LED and display it on a 2x16 LCD screen. The project was achieved with Atmega 32 MCU

and the codes were indigenously made by us.

6. Reverse Parking Assistance: A distance sensor measures the distance of the nearest

obstacle on the rear side of the vehicle and displays the distance on an LCD. When the

distance between the obstacle and the vehicle is very less, the driver is alerted. If the

distance reduces further, the vehicle is stopped automatically.

7. Pocket Theft Alarm: An alarm system used to alert the user when a theft occurs. This

project is implemented using operational amplifiers.

8. Voice Controlled Device Switching: Devices like bulb, fan etc. are controlled using

voice commands by sending the commands through Bluetooth to a microcontroller. The

scope of this project could be extended to control many other electrical equipments. This

project can be of great help for the physically challenged people.

9. Automatic Water Pumping System: The pumping of water to overhead tanks is

automated using a simple circuit consisting of 555 IC and relays to activate the motor. The

pumping of water starts automatically when the water level falls below the lower threshold

and the pumping stops when it reaches the upper threshold. The idea can be implemented

in real life to avoid wastage of water, reducing man power at pumping stations etc.

Overview

One of the major undertakings of EEA is the Tathva Stall. The hard

work that the members put in throughout the year has made this year’s

EEA stall a resounding success. The stall had numerous electronics

as well as electrical projects. This year’s exhibit occupied 2 rooms in

the Electronics Lecture Hall Complex and had more projects than all

preceding years. This was mainly due to the substantial increase in

the number of electrical projects that were included. The stall was

active on the 30th and 31st of October. A huge number of people

visited the stall, including student groups from nearby schools. They

had very positive reviews about the stall.

Jobs and Responsibilities

The 1st year EEE students who aspire to join EEA were put in charge

of explanation of the easier projects.

The 2nd year EEA executives were in charge of the stall and provided

the explanation of the working principles of the more complex

projects to the audiences.

Page 43: Department of Electrical Engineering · • Electrical Aptitude Test 2017. SUMMER CAMP 2015 REPORT An EEA initiative AUGUST 3, 2015 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION NIT Calicut. OVERVIEW

The 3rd years undertook the overall management of the stall and

devised logistics required to ensure smooth conduction of the stall.

The 4th years maintained quality control and ensured that the stall

was up to the high standards that is expected from an event

conducted by EEA.

Projects Exhibited

TESLA COIL : The tesla coil was built as a joint project by the third year

and fourth year EEA members. This was one of the most ambitious

projects undertaken by EEA and the overall cost of completing the

project was around 15,000 INR.

8x8x8 LED CUBE : The LED cube was yet another project that captured

the curiosity of the audience. It involved 512 LEDs connected to an

Arduino board that was programmed to display 3- dimensional

messages. It finds application in small scale display and interior

design.

VOICE ENABLED DEVICE CONTROL : The Arduino board is controlled by

Android speech recognition using an app AMR (Android Meets

Robots), via Bluetooth. The app works by pressing the mic button,

then it will wait for you to say a command. The app will then display

the words that you've stated and will send data strings for the Arduino

to process.

Page 44: Department of Electrical Engineering · • Electrical Aptitude Test 2017. SUMMER CAMP 2015 REPORT An EEA initiative AUGUST 3, 2015 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION NIT Calicut. OVERVIEW

BLUETOOTH CONTROLLED ROBOT : This project uses an Arduino board

to control two motor wheels attached to the robot via a motor driver

IC. Direction instructions are sent to the Arduino board via a bluetooth

module paired to an android phone using a custom made app.

GSM BASED DEVICE SWITCHING : This project uses a SIM 900 GSM

module along with an Arduino board and relays to control electrical

devices. Devices connected to the Arduino can be controlled either by

sending SMS text or by sending voice commands to the installed SIM.

Points for Improvement

EEA BELIEVES THAT NO MATTER HOW GOOD WE MAKE OUR EVENTS, THERE IS

ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.

This year there has been a suggestion to avoid placing first year for

explaining projects since they have an incomplete understanding of

its working principles. And the second years were recommended

PROJECTS

The summer camp was conducted with an aim to inspire students to pursue projects

of their own which involve honing skills in programming and circuit simulations.

Few projects that are currently under development:

Number plate recognition

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is an image processing technology

which uses number (license) plate to identify the vehicle. The objective is to

Page 78: Department of Electrical Engineering · • Electrical Aptitude Test 2017. SUMMER CAMP 2015 REPORT An EEA initiative AUGUST 3, 2015 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION NIT Calicut. OVERVIEW

design an efficient automatic authorized vehicle identification system by using the

vehicle number plate.

Neural Network Based Face Recognition Using Matlab

A face recognition system is a computer vision and it automatically identifies a

human face from database images. The face recognition problem is challenging as it

needs to account for all possible appearance variation caused by change in

illumination, facial features, occlusions, etc.

Arduino playing piano tiles

Using a light sensor, relay, and arduino, a circuit is made to play piano tiles. Depending

on the specification of the components used and the precision of the source code, this can

be made to play the game even at very high speeds (approximately 21 tiles/sec being the

world record).

LED illusion mirror

A mirror, plane glass, led bulbs and a tin foil ,if arranged in the desired manner

will create an optical illusion which looks something like LED tunnel.

Electrical Engineering Association

LED matrix controlled via bluetooth and arduino

An 8*8 led matrix android app is made into which the user may enter their desired

pattern. This is connected to red dot matrix module via an arduino and a Bluetooth

module. The mirror image of the pattern which given on the phone will be then

diplayed.

Electronic voting machine using Arduino board

Page 79: Department of Electrical Engineering · • Electrical Aptitude Test 2017. SUMMER CAMP 2015 REPORT An EEA initiative AUGUST 3, 2015 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION NIT Calicut. OVERVIEW

Components include push buttons, arduino uno, 16*2 LCD and bread board

Working: The candidate may press the button corresponding to the desired item, doing

do will increment the voting value for that particular item by one. The ‘result’ button

may be used to get the number of votes per item. This process of recording and

summation of votes is achieved using an arduino uno board. The result is displayed on

an LCD screen.

Voice controlled bot

Any device may be controlled using voice inputs to a mobile phone. A Bluetooth

module will play interface to the data transfer between the phone and the arduino board

that brings about a desired output based on the voice input. The voice input is

transferred in form of data strings using an android app.

Gesture controlled device switching

Proximity sensors and accelerometers can be used to realize gesture controlled circuits.

The output of the accelerometer or the proximity sensor that varies with gestures may

be fed into an arduino board for further processing to give the desired effect.
