Personal Statement

Whilst finishing my school studies I was interested in a medical related vocation but unsure which path to follow. Dentistry was appealing as it allowed me work with the public but also form personal relationships through repeated visits which I had enjoyed thoroughly through part-time work. I was inspired to attend University after seeing my father graduate from a Law degree as a mature student at the age of 41. I enjoyed my time at University but found that I only began to have a real passion for my chosen profession during the clinical years of study.

I initially struggled to settle at University having to repeat an exam in 1st year as I did not reach the standards expected of me. However, upon graduation I received a first class merit certificate for restorative dentistry, oral surgery and oral medicine. This was

achieved through hard work and I have continued this ethos ever since. After graduation I wished to sig-nificantly improve my skills working in general prac-tice and continue to strive to improve the quality of treatment I provide. VT provided a taste of continuing education but I remained motivated to achieve more. I started by completing my MFGDP qualification. Despite

the local study group being full I did not wish to wait and completed the examinations and course work without help from any tutors to achieve my qualification.

I graduated with my qualifica-tion from the Royal college of surgeons 18 month after finishing University. Despite

the significant investment for debt ridden graduate and at a time when my University friends and col-leagues were buying flats and cars I reinvested in my education. I attended courses throughout the country always trying to move out of my ‘comfort zone’. This was because I have the opinion that you have to strive further than your local peers to be successful

“you have to strive further than your local peers to be successful and for my patients to receive the

best care.”

I was a nervous patient previously, I was quickly re-assured and my mind put at ease. My whole treatment plan was a good experience with professional and friendly staff. I’m really pleased with the end result. Thanx!!

p4.and for my patients to receive the best care. It was around the completion of my MFGDP I obtained a passion for minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry and preventative treatments. The most significant education program I have undertaken was my diploma in restorative dentistry. I travelled from Glasgow to Manchester for 2 days per month to complete 2 days of tutorials and lectures on various subjects. This course also involved significant reading, essay writing and preparation for a written exam at each meeting. I presented 4 advanced clinical cases for examination and completed my graduation on 2010.

I Have since continued my studies by undertaking a masters degree in advanced restorative dentistry and am due to graduate December 2011. I feel that patient education is the most important factor in maintaining good oral health and must be approached delicately not to alarm or offend patients.

My practice work as a team and the combined efforts of all our staff can create and maintain healthy beauti-ful smiles. Nowadays education often involves telling patients that treatment is not in their best interest, particularly when they request full mouth veneers or

crowns on healthy teeth. My practice aims to provide high quality painless dentistry and excellent service to our patients. We have branded ourselves as ‘pio-neers of pain free dentistry’ and ‘dentistry for busy people’. We aim to provide pain free dentistry and through the various techniques and equipment we employ our patients are very happy with our efforts as can be seen in my testimonials. Our dentistry for busy people model is derived from our late night and weekend opening hours. We also have a 24/7 call overflow service so that our patients never encoun-ter an engaged tone or answering message and targeted call back within 10 minutes from the on duty staff member. The practice was opened as a squat in November 2009 and I feel that we can only compete with more established practices is by having the high-est standards clinically and service based.

Our patient journey begins at our first phone call and I have trained my staff on managing patients to make their whole experience as pleasant as possible and this is demonstrated in my testimonials. I feel many dental practices fail to build rapport and relationships with their patients and we place great emphasis on doing so. As we see many phobic and new patients

Page 6: Dentistry On The Square Brochure

referral basis and generally do not see my own patients who prefer to be treated by myself. I do enjoy leading a team of such highly skilled individuals and we continue to motivate each other with our clinical discussions and treatment planning. It would be very easy for me to provide many of my patient with full mouth fixed prosthetics as they often request. I have become very enthusiastic about minimally in-

vasive dentistry and in par-ticular cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetics should always be secondary to health and function but with modern techniques this can be achieved in many cur-rent situations.

The concepts of align, bleach and bond are applicable to many cases and are demonstrated below. I think that any clinician would agree that this is far better than placing upper 3-3 crowns or veneers and cre-ates a very satisfactory result and conserves tooth tissue as much as possible. Training in the use of Inman Aligner and Clear Aligner Ortho appliances as well as attending fantastic courses with Didier Dietchi -

this brings down their ‘barriers’ to dentistry and makes their whole experience far more pleasant. The biggest compliment a patient can ever pay me is by referring a family member, friend or colleague. Last month this totalled 53 new patients alone with business cards and word of mouth being the most popular method of referral. I feel this is particularly significant during times of recession and austerity the practice has had to manage with. I complete many large treatment cases for patients who often refer others for more advances cases which can only be done by building relationships and obtaining trust.

I oversee and plan the most complex treatments within the practice which has only been possible through my further training and qualifications how-ever, I do know my limitations. The practice does have specialist clinicians in orthodontics and maxillo-facial surgery as well as those with advanced qualification an training to masters level in implantology and endodontics. Most of these clinicians work on a

The treatment went by smoother than I had ever imagined and the staff were all very helpful. Mark – great guy who looked after me and my teeth incredibly well. Thanks to all at the practice for completely changing my life! I’ll recommend to anyone.

My aim is to grown my practice and build on our reputation. I’m sure that this will in turn grow patient number and referrals from other practices. My ulti-mate personal professional aim is for inclusion onto the specialist register. Through gaining further qualifications (ideally a diploma in implantology by 2014) I hope this can be possible.

About The Practice

Originally opening in the 70’s it became the 1st private practice in Glasgow. The original owner sold the prac-tice and it was rebranded as Niddrie Square clinic and became a referral only specialist centre. It was closed and left dormant for 9 months in 2009 and was reopened by Mark in November 2009. The practice has grown organically since then and 4 surgeries are utilized at all times. With a number of specialists and reputable clinicians working at the practice it has now become a referral centre offering high quality care to patients with specific needs. Mark hopes this will con-tinue to grow in the current market and will follow the continual advances in clinical dentistry.

Page 11: Dentistry On The Square Brochure

I cannot thank you all enough. Everyone in the practice makes you feel so special & thank is a rare experience today I now look how I always wanted to look & there was no pain or discomfort. Thank you all for making me smile again!

specialist orthodontist, implant dentist, endodontist, general dentist, therapist and hygienist. The practice is becoming predominantly based on referrals from local practices with a particular need for implants and orthodontics.

Mark has a keen interest in pain free dentistry. Mark feels patient comfort is paramount in maintaining

a patients motivation and their attendance. With the use of ‘the wand’ and the soon to arrive ‘waterlase MD’ Mark is keen to improve his ability to provide pain free treatment.

He is currently completing his studies in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Leeds, where he will hopefully finish his MSc course in the Autumn of 2011. Mark is also keen to take the Diploma exam in Implant Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, and is currently studying and collecting relevant cases to sit this exam in the near future.

p12.

BiographyOriginally from just outside Glasgow, Mark has con-tinued to practice in the greater Glasgow area since graduation in 2005. He worked mainly as an NHS practitioner continuing as an associate in his original VT practice. He volunteered as a clinical assistant 1 afternoon per week at the village dental surgery in Bothwell where he assisted in the placement and resto-ration of implants as well as other advanced restorative techniques.

Upon completion of his Diploma in restorative den-tistry from the Royal college of surgeons in London Mark wanted to move away from simple restorative dentistry and move into a more demanding field to put his newly acquired skills to practice.

In November 2009 he opened a squat practice in the South-side of Glasgow from a previously closed down practice. Starting only himself he now leads a clinical team compromising a specialist maxillo-facial surgeon,
