Standard Form EquationsConvert the question into standard form first
Straight-forward
1. 0.1 x 0.1
2. 0.1 x 0.01
3. 0.1 x 0.001
4. 0.2 x 0.0002
5. 0.1 / 0.1
6. 0.1 / 0.01
7. 0.1 / 0.001
8. 0.2 / 0.002
Can you see a pattern emerging?
More Challenging
1. 0.02 x 0.004
2. 0.003 x 0.000000000003
3. 0.000036 / 20
4. 250,000 / 0.00004
5. 0.00001 / 50,000

Standard Form Multiplication
1. Convert the equation into standard form. 0.0001 x 0.001 becomes 1x10-4 x 1x10-3
2. Multiply the initial parts of the standard form i.e. 1x10-4 x 1x10-3 becomes 1 x 1 = 1
3. Add the powers together i.e. -4 + -3 = -7
4. The answer is 1x10-7

Standard Form Division
1. Convert the equation into standard form. 0.0001 x 0.001 becomes 1x10-4 x 1x10-3
2. Divide the initial parts of the standard form i.e. 1x10-4 x 1x10-3 becomes 1 / 1 = 1
3. Subtract the powers from each other i.e. -4 - -3 = -4 + 3 = -1
4. The answer is 1x10-1

Finish Yesterday’s Activity
• Calculate density in SI units (kgm-3)• Plot a graph of densities for at least three ball
bearings, preferably four or five• Calculate the gradient• Write a paragraph explaining how you can
improve accuracy and precision• What’s provided your biggest uncertainty• How can you represent errors on the graph
I will be taking these in for marking.

Defining Material Properties
Using laptops collected from the Biology Prep room, research the following words:
• Stress
• Strain
• Tension
• Compression
• Plastic
• Elastic

Homework
• You are going to work in groups of no more than four
• You will create an A3 poster which will show the following:– Definitions of the words already provided
– A use of the properties in different materials
– Describe why the materials were chosen for that property
– A bibliography of resources used
