10/01: 27 United States Governors declare October 2001 as COPD Awareness month in their
states (See text below 11/13/01)
11/13/01: President Bush announces Presidential Proclamation of November, 2001 as “National
COPD Awareness Month’. This began with Dr. Dennis Doherty and Dr. Thomas Petty, Co-Chairman
of the National Lung Health Education Program (NLHEP) and Sam Giordano, Executive Director of the
American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC) to petition the U.S. House of Representatives to declare
October as National COPD Awareness Month to help raise public awareness of COPD. This was well
received to the point that on July 25, 2001 Congressman Cliff Stearns (R-FL) and John Lewis (D-GA), in a
bipartisan fashion, introduced House Concurrent resolution 197, a resolution that would designate October as
COPD awareness month. In anticipation of this we also asked President Bush to join this effort with a
Presidential Proclamation. Several leaders of other organizations/societies (AARC, ATS, ALA, ACCP,
NAMDRC, NMA, NEF) joined this coalition and signed a letter sent to President Bush July 24, 2001. Due to
the tragic events of Sept 11 we asked the President and Congress to forestall the effort until next year in light
of other issues facing our nation. The support was so strong however, that 23 individual states had already
declared October as COPD month and we were called and asked by the White House to consider having a
Presidential Proclamation to declare November as National COPD Awareness Month. This came to fruition
on November 13, 2001
