DENBIGH AND CLWYD ANGLING CLUB April 2015 Your committee wish you tight lines for 2015 CLWYD SEA TROUT The photographs are of two Clwyd sea trout, the one on the right a nice 4lb fish caught during bright sunshine, the other a cracker of 9lbs taken at night. Both fish were caught during the low water conditions which have prevailed over the last two seasons. Last year Shaun had over 50 fish for the year, whilst Tony Espley had well over 40. Shaun’s were taken at night , Tony’s during the daytime. All Shaun’s fish were retuned and all but two of Tony’s lived to be caught another day. The reason I have added this item is to point out that even in low water conditions the fishing on the Clwyd can be fantastic. The run of sea trout over the last two years have been exceptional and we see no reason for that to change. Our river is usually forth in the league of top Welsh sea trout rivers. CLWYD BROWN TROUT As you know, we have stopped stocking fish in the river, and also asked you to voluntarily release all brownies. The result has been a noticeable rise in the size of the average brownie, as the picture shows. ( the fish was returned after the photo was taken) There was even a three pounder recorded last year. Our brown trout fishing is rapidly increasing in quality as well as quantity. We believe we now offer some of the best wild trout fishing to be had. At the start of another season we thought it was time to thank you all for your contribution to making our trout fishing so good. For those who wish to take a fish for the pot, we would ask that you take advantage of the reduced rates for fishing at both Llyn Derwyn and Tan y Mynydd. However the catch and release policy is still voluntary, so it really is up to you. CLWYD SALMON Salmon runs on the Clwyd, as with many other rivers, were poor last year, as the year before. Water levels were low during most of the season and few fish were recorded or indeed seen in the river. The Clwyd, Conwy and Gwynedd Rivers Trust are working hard to identify work which can be done to improve the in river habitat to improve the survival rates of fish, as well as removing obstacles to fish running, such as the removal if the obstruction on the Lady Bagot’s drive stretch of the Clywedog and another barrier on the Wheeler. For those of you that keep an eye on the fish pass at Bontuchel, when the pass gate looks to be only partly open, it is still letting fish through, experience has shown that the opening set is ten best for the pass. We hope to see better runs of salmon soon: water conditions permitting.

DENBIGH AND CLWYD ANGLING CLUB April 2015

Your committee wish you tight lines for 2015

CLWYD SEA TROUT

The photographs are of two Clwyd sea trout, the one on the

right a nice 4lb fish caught during bright sunshine, the other

a cracker of 9lbs taken at night. Both fish were caught during

the low water conditions which have prevailed over the last

two seasons. Last year Shaun had over 50 fish for the year,

whilst Tony Espley had well over 40. Shaun’s were taken at

night , Tony’s during the daytime. All Shaun’s fish were

retuned and all but two of Tony’s lived to be caught another day. The reason I have added this

item is to point out that even in low water conditions the fishing on the Clwyd can be fantastic.

The run of sea trout over the last two years have been exceptional and we see no reason for that

to change. Our river is usually forth in the league of top Welsh sea trout rivers.

CLWYD BROWN TROUT

As you know, we have stopped stocking fish in the river,

and also asked you to voluntarily release all brownies. The

result has been a noticeable rise in the size of the average

brownie, as the picture shows. ( the fish was returned after

the photo was taken) There was even a three pounder

recorded last year. Our brown trout fishing is rapidly

increasing in quality as well as quantity. We believe we now

offer some of the best wild trout fishing to be had. At the

start of another season we thought it was time to thank you

all for your contribution to making our trout fishing so good. For those who wish to take a fish

for the pot, we would ask that you take advantage of the reduced rates for fishing at both Llyn

Derwyn and Tan y Mynydd. However the catch and release policy is still voluntary, so it really is

up to you.

CLWYD SALMON

Salmon runs on the Clwyd, as with many other rivers, were poor last year, as the year before.

Water levels were low during most of the season and few fish were recorded or indeed seen in

the river. The Clwyd, Conwy and Gwynedd Rivers Trust are working hard to identify work

which can be done to improve the in river habitat to improve the survival rates of fish, as well as

removing obstacles to fish running, such as the removal if the obstruction on the Lady Bagot’s

drive stretch of the Clywedog and another barrier on the Wheeler. For those of you that keep an

eye on the fish pass at Bontuchel, when the pass gate looks to be only partly open, it is still letting

fish through, experience has shown that the opening set is ten best for the pass. We hope to see

better runs of salmon soon: water conditions permitting.

Those of you who have not yet renewed your membership, please do

it soon, otherwise you may have to be added to our waiting list.

involved in fishing.

This is your club, just as much as it is older member’s, so if you have any ideas or requests why

if you fancy writing an article for the newsletter or have a photo you would like to see in it, again

just email or call.

You are the future of your club, we will do all we can to help and encourage you.

The free try the fly day detailed opposite is aimed especially at

younger members and those who fancy a try so we hope you can make

it.

If you can’t, then keep an eye out for the next one, to be held at Tan y

Mynydd at the other end of the Vale. Details will follow soon.

from 10am onwards.

Bring along your own fly rod and they’ll match it with the perfect flyline!

Fly casting demonstrations on the river behind the shop from 12-3, followed by an informal

Q&A tuition session, free and open to everyone.

A fantastic opportunity to discuss and try tackle, improve your own casting and pick up some

professional tips.

RIVER WALK

This years river walk is planned for Sunday 10th May.

Meet at Brookhouse car park for 10:30. The event is open

to all especially new members. The itinerary for the day

will depend on the numbers that turn up and their

wishes. The aim is to spend time looking at the upper

river beats, then a break before looking over the lower

beats. You “guides” will be happy to offer advice on

methods and lures: anything. All are welcome.

RIVER MAINTENANCE!

In your membership book, you will find the name and contact details for

the beat manager for each of the river beats, please call and let them

know what work you would like to be done on your favourite beat:

otherwise we have no idea who wants what doing and where. We also

need volunteers to help with maintenance: it’s not all hard work, any help however little will be

much appreciated. Please let us know if you are willing to help. We do get to the river before the

season starts, the exercise is great and we enjoy the work. Please help: you know it makes sense.

Grateful thanks in anticipation.

PLEASE NOTE: If we don’t maintain our waters nobody else will. The Environment

Agency, now part of Natural Resources Wales, have made it quite clear that they will only carry

out river maintenance work to prevent potential flooding of buildings, not

land. WE were fortunate last year that unlike the River Elwy, the floods

actually helped clear our waters. The lower section of Glan y Wern has been

almost unfishable for some considerable time, so we are hoping to make a

major improvement to that section of the beat. If you would like to join the

working party please let a committee member know. However small your

contribution it will help. Anybody got a stove to boil a kettle for tea?

PHOTOGRAPHS: PLEASE.

I make this plea for photo’s in every newsletter, but still so few are sent. A big thank you for

those that do send them in. For those that don’t I appeal for your help: I need photo’s to liven up

the web site and to encourage those that are not doing so well, to keep on trying. There were

some cracking fish taken last year, but so few pictures. I don’t want to know when or where they

were caught, and promise not to either divulge locations or to run there myself. Some pictures

PLEASE. Thanks
