We hereby announce
as the recipient of the
2011 Dr. Marvin C. Rulin Resident Research Awardon this day,
Friday, May 20, 2011at the Annual Research Day in
Reproductive Biology & Women’s Health
Established in 1992, Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI) is the nation’s rst research center devoted exclusively to the health concerns of women and infants. Today, the Institute is the largest women’s health research facility in the country. In tandem, Magee-Womens Foundation is responsible for raising money to support patient care, education, and research for Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and MWRI.
MWRI’S mission is three fold: * Advance knowledge in the eld of reproductive biology and medicine; * Translate discoveries into improved health for women and their infants, and; * Train the next generation of reproductive sciences scholars.
Across the street from Magee-Womens Hospital, MWRI occupies 125,000 square feet of modern laboratory facilities, core space, and conference rooms. From its inception, MWRI was well-recognized nationally for its research and currently receives more funding from the National Institutes of Health than any other research institute in the country. Now in its second decade, the Institute has grown from 20 faculty members to over 100 faculty and more than 300 sta.
The Women’s Cancer Research Center (WCRC), of which Dr. Krivak is a part, is also housed at MWRI. WCRC expands MWRI’s research capacity becoming a nationally and internationally recognized center for women’s cancer research and treatment.
Under the direction of Adrian V. Lee, Ph.D., an expert in molecular and cellular biology of breast cancer, and Robert Edwards, M.D., a noted gynecologic oncologist and vice-chair of clinical aairs and director of gynecologic oncology research and the Ovarian Cancer Center of Excellence at Magee, the Center is building upon the already outstanding women’s cancer clinical care and is a vibrant center where novel ideas are translated into clinical trials for the prevention and treatment of women’s cancers.
Working on prevention, early detection, and better treatment, the WCRC continues to recruit outstanding new faculty in women’s cancer research, enhance interactions, communication, and collaborations between disciplines and provides a resource for techniques and models in women’s cancer research.

A Glimpse into Dr. Krivak’s Training &
Ambitions
DR. KRIVAK’S RESEARCH FOCUSES ON
• The development of prognostic markers to identify patients at high risk for developing gynecologic cancer • The development and validation of biomarkers to identify who may respond to specific chemotherapy and biologic agents when treating patients with cancer
For more information about Dr. Krivak’s ovarian cancer research projects,
please contact Ann Felter in the Magee-Womens Foundation oce at
412-641-8923 or [email protected].
MISSION STATEMENT To develop a nationally recognized gynecologic cancer research program at Magee.
DR. KRIVAK
• Served in the Air Force for 12 years• Completed fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center• Conducted research at the National Cancer Institute, the National Institutes of Health’s cancer investigation branch• Shows concern and seeks the best care and outcomes for his patients • Demonstrates expertise that patients can trust, maintains a unique, personal relationship with them, and respects the individual decisions they must make• Is highly regarded in the field of gynecologic oncology, taught numerous national courses, peer reviewed over 45 articles and wrote numerous book chapters• Oversees the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship program at Magee• Has achieved more than most physician-scientists his age due to his drive and talent
GOAL: Raise $2.5 million to support ovarian cancer research initiatives led by Dr. Thomas C. Krivak and his team from the Magee-Womens Gynecologic Oncology Program and Magee-Womens Research Institute.
Funding from the National Institutes of Health continues to decrease. Without this funding, many important ovarian cancer research projects are unable to be conducted. The nationally recognized Magee-Womens Gynecologic Oncology Program continues to enhance its prole through the remarkable accomplishments of Dr. Krivak and his colleagues.
Magee is poised to become the best gynecologic cancer research program in the country. The projects and programs will allow Magee to increase its knowledge about gynecologic cancer, provide individualized care tailored to the needs of each patient, and nd new ways to prevent and treat these diseases.
Learn More About Ovarian Cancer and Magee’s Role in the Treatment of the Disease
NATIONAL OVARIAN CANCER STATISTICS
• Ovarian cancer is the most serious of all gynecologic cancers.• According to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, an estimated
one in 58 women will develop ovarian cancer during her lifetime.• According to the American Cancer Society, in 2010, about 21,880
new cases were diagnosed and about 13,850 women will die of the
disease in the United States.
• When one is diagnosed and treated at an early stage, the 5-year survival rate is over 90%.
• Due to the cancer’s non-specific symptoms and the lack of early detection testing, only 19% of all cases are found at such an early stage.
• If ovarian cancer is caught at Stage III or higher, the survival rate
can be as low as 30.6%.
POSSIBLE SYMPTOMS
When symptoms do appear, they are often advanced. Symptoms may include:
• Pain or swelling in the abdomen• Pain in the pelvis• Gastrointestinal problems, such as gas, bloating, or constipation
Magee-Womens Gynecologic Cancer Program of UPMC Cancer Centers
• Treatments Magee offers include: Surgery, minimally invasive surgery, robotic assisted surgery, sentinel lymph node mapping, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy, radiation oncology, lymphedema management, pain service, and palliative care.
• High-Risk Ovarian Cancer service offers: Individual assessment, counseling, testing, and surveillance to women throughout the region.

SMALL PACKAGE,
Great Possibilities
By deciding to donate or store your baby’s umbilical cord blood, you and your baby may make a dierence for a patient or family member suering from cancer, leukemia and many other diseases.
Did you know? You have Cord Blood
OPTIONS
YOUR OPTIONS:
1. Donate to a Public Bank to help others (no cost) 2. Store in a Private Bank for your family’s own use (fees)
3. Donate to medical research (on an as-needed basis; no cost)
For more information or questions, visit www.danbergercordblood.com or contact Mary Wiegel at [email protected], 412-209-7479 or 412-327-6025.
Congratulations!Erin McGrough
Among all nurses, you came in 1st place for cord blood assistance and
collection in 2010!
Thanks for your hard work and dedication toThe Dan Berger Cord Blood Program.
The blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta after the birth of a child, called “cord blood,” is a rich source of stem cells for blood and marrow transplants (BMT). Approximately 70 percent of BMT patients do not nd matching donors within their families and must receive transplants from donor registries.
As you prepare for the birth of your baby, please consider donating your baby’s cord blood. The focus of your labor and delivery remains on you and your baby, and the birth will not be aected by the collection of the cord blood, which is collected after your baby is born.
Cord blood is needed from people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds in order to match the diverse tissue types of patients as closely as possible. We identify the cord blood type and list it on the registry of the National Marrow Donor Program®, which operates the largest and most racially and ethnically diverse donor registry available worldwide. The cord blood is stored in a public cord blood bank until it is needed.
For more information, or to learn how you can partici-pate, contact The Dan Berger Cord Blood Program at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC at 412-209-7479.
Provide a lifeline to the futureDonate your baby’s cord blood.
Your Baby’s Cord Blood Could Save A Life.
Tiani Hodges is a grateful mother. When her son, Tristin Ross, was 3 years old, he was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma. His treatment included a bone marrow transplant. Then, at the age of 5, Tristin developed acute myel-ogenous leukemia (AML) - a fast-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. In the past ve years, he has received two cord blood transplants at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Today, Tristin is a healthy, active 10 year old, with no restrictions, who likes to ride his bike and play outside from dawn to dusk. Tristin’s family will forever be thankful to the generous mothers who chose to donate their babies’ cord blood to potentially give someone, in this case Tristin, a second chance at life.
