Demand for a Unified Surgical Consent Process at North Bristol NHS Trust Jessica Preshaw, Susie Hogg, Sanjay Vyas Results 132 responses received, 64% performing procedures requiring written consent. Few specialties use prepopulated consent forms: O&G, gastro/hepatology, anaesthetics. 58% utilise pooled operating lists. ‘Request for treatment’ forms sparsely used (5%), adopted by general surgery, urogynaecology, T&O. Majority (77%) supports an online, mobile consent process &resource. Majority (71%) supports a trust-wide policy on timing of consent. Aim To determine the surgical consent processes adopted by clinicians across the largest NHS trust in the South West, UK. Method A cross specialty online survey to consultants from all surgical specialties focusing on elective surgeries performed under general or regional anaesthesia within an operating theatre. Ambulatory procedures excluded. Conclusions High response rate with cross specialty input illustrates engagement & importance. Consent is recognised as a process starting in clinic to day of surgery; this journey varies widely depending on specialty. Most consent finally undertaken on admission for surgery & executed by consultant tier; some specialties use separate consent clinics. There is demand for a unified process pertinent not only at local level but also nationally. 76% 10% 9% 4% 1% On day of admission for surgery Subsequent outpatient appointment Consent clinic Pre-op assessment appointment First outpatient appointment When do you routinely take consent for surgery? 0 20 40 60 80 100 Specialist nurse SHO Registrar Senior registrar Clinical fellow/ associate Consultant Major Intermediate Minor procedures Who take consent for surgical procedures?
