    ATHENS: 25/11/2009

    PRESS RELEASE

UInternational day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Even today, the International day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and

Greece still does not provide sufficient protection to women victims of violence.According to data which came into the light yesterday during a press conference, the Center

for Womens Studies and ResearchDiotima, regarding the laws and policies for the

elimination of this phenomenon in Greece it has been observed that : In Greece today,

practices rather aggregate and amplify the problem. Violence against women is not a privateissue. It rather constitutes a form of invisible criminality-rape, beating, threats, verbal

assaults- which usually take place at home, a place where a human being should feel

confident and secure. The lack of specific conventions to provide assistance and protection to women victims of

violent demonstration is considered as a great problematic issue while few supportiveinstitutions hardly exist.

According to a research 28 supportive institutions have been recorded in Greece while

according to rates of minimum specifications set by Ste which assigns one consultative

service for a number of 50.000 of women. That means that 84 more supportive institutionsshould have been in operation.

Furthermore, 50 per cent of these institutions are based upon a mixed system of funding, for

instance in 6 form 10 cases in total the operation cost presents the last three years deficitcomparatively with the amount of funding . Only two of them are able to provide legal

support and intercession to women victims while only one welcomes victims of human

    trafficking.

Concerning Trafficking is the main form of illegal trafficking and trading of human beings

in Greece which leads women to prostitution and sexual manipulation. The majority of

human trade concerns women and under -age girls. In Greece despite the evidences for

thousands of women victims, a great difficulty has been observed in order to crumb thesecriminal networks.

Moreover, according to data collected by the Greek police, between the years 2003- 2006only 416 women have been hunt down. The majority of them are women of Russian,

Rumanian and Ukrainian nationality. For the year 2002 it has been estimated that around

17.200 women participated in the prostitution market. It has to be mentioned that the 72%of

these women of illegal trafficking participate in the process of the trade at least for threetimes.

The Immigration Union of Greece supports the attempt so a Special fund can be established

for the victims of violence with the states contribution as well as suggests the establishment

of a National Observatory and the compilation of a National Action Plan for the Eliminationof violence against women.Regarding the issue of trafficking and its massive dimensions taken place in Greece, the

Immigration Union of Greece states that it constitutes severe manipulation of the human

being and mortal insult of the human dignity. Earlier the Union has been suggested more

strict measures regarding the regulation of statue against the traffickers of illegal immigrants

as well as the human traffickers. The Union will remain to support these suggestions until they can be realized.

According to a research accomplished by journalists associates to the Immigration Union of

Greece, several are the bordellos in Athens where women victims of trafficking are sexuallymanipulated. These women, the majority of them come from states-members of theEuropean Union, have been maneuvered in prostitution mainly by their partner who is also

their boss. Likewise, they are trapped in a reality with no way out since they cannot receive

    any assistance from their intimates.
