Wednesday brought anothervictory for residents on both sidesof the border fighting a proposalto erect radio transmission towersin Point Roberts.A Skagit County Superior
Court judge dismissed an appealby BBC Broadcasting Inc. tooverturn a decision by WhatcomCounty to reject the company’sapplication to erect five 45-metre(150-foot) steel towers at anundeveloped lot on McKenzieWay, about 330 metres from theTsawwassen border. It was reject-ed because the towers exceededheight limits in the Americanpeninsula. The company filed an appeal,
arguing the antenna would be autility that would provide “vitalpublic services” for Point Roberts. The towers would have trans-
mitted South Asian radio stationKRPI, AM 1550, which broad-casts from studios in Richmondfor a Lower Mainland audience. Also known as Sher-E-PunjabAM 1550, the station currentlybroadcasts using antenna inFerndale, but wanted to relocatethem for a stronger all-day signal.Concerned about electrical
interference and health impacts, residents on both sides of the bor-der have been fighting on severalfronts for more than two years, including arguing the application
approved by the FCC was fraudu-lent because a map submitted bythe applicant left out Tsawwassen.Residents also gathered a petitionwith thousands of signatures ask-ing Ottawa to intervene.A liaison for MP Kerry-Lynne
Findlay and the Cross BorderCoalition, Tsawwassen residentUlf Ottho attended Wednesday’scourt proceeding on behalf of theMP, along with roughly 50 mem-bers of the coalition as well asCorporation of Delta staff.Ottho said the judge imme-
diately issued her ruling afterthe submissions, listing severalreasons to uphold the WhatcomCounty decision, including thefact there are alternative sitesavailable in Whatcom County thatdon’t have height restrictions.

Delta’s four federal elec-tion candidates squaredoff Wednesday night inTsawwassen for the finaltime of the campaign.Organized by the Delta
Chamber of Commerceand co-sponsored by theDelta Optimist and RealEstate Board of GreaterVancouver, the forum atSouth Delta Secondarysaw about 200 people takeadvantage of the opportu-nity to hear from LiberalCarla Qualtrough, NewDemocrat Jeremy Leveque,Anthony Devellano of theGreens and Conservativeincumbent Kerry-LynneFindlay.Written questions submit-
ted to the chamber aheadof time and from the audi-ence ran the gamut, rangingfrom terrorism to support-ing seniors’ health careneeds to the Trans-PacificPartnership.As far as some of the
hot button local issues,Findlay wasted no timeduring her opening remarksto break news that BBCBroadcasting Inc., thecompany behind the con-troversial plan to erectradio transmission towersin Point Roberts, lost itsappeal earlier in the day ina U.S. court. She used the opportunity
to go over all the work shehad done on behalf of herconstituents on the issue, noting it’s an example ofhow she works collabora-tively with others. When asked about the
radio towers later in themeeting, Qualtrough saidthe issue was an example ofhow the community needs amore effective MP.“I would suggest there
hasn’t been sufficientfederal leadership on this
initiative. I give creditentirely to the communityfor their success and anyongoing success,” she said.“There are other federalavenues that can and shouldbe pursued at the variousdifferent levels, whether itbe between the FCC andCRTC, whether it be in thehalls or Prime Minister’sOffice, there’s certainly arole to play for your federalrepresentative in issues thatso directly impact our com-munity.”Asked about protecting
farmland from industrialdevelopment, Findlay, whomet with a group of farm-ers earlier in the day, saidshe has been working hardto protect Delta farms andher many campaign signson local farms show she hasthe support of farmers.
Findlay was also askedwhether her governmentwould provide fundingfor a bridge to replace theGeorge Massey Tunnel, responding that neithershe nor her governmenthas received any informa-tion about the project fromthe province. She said sheexpects a funding request tocome on such a major infra-structure project. She addedshe has been working withthe Corporation of Deltain trying to ensure Ladnerwould not be cut off whenthe bridge is built.Asked for his position
on the contentious plan byan airline consortium atYVR to barge jet fuel to aproposed tank farm alongthe Fraser River, Devellanoadmitted he didn’t knowmuch about the issue and
instead talked about highjet fuel prices. However,on the question posed tohim regrading maintenancedredging of local riverchannels, he respondedthat a long-term programis needed just as roads andbridges are maintained, oth-erwise sediment will simplybuild up once again.Asked for his position
on the proposed Terminal 2at Roberts Bank, Levequeanswered there is no busi-ness case for the project, something confirmed bymanagers at Deltaport, andthat the potential environ-mental damage is immensefor the important ecosys-tem.“An NDP government,
like I said, would reversethe cuts the Conservativeshave made to the protec-
tion of our lakes and riversand would also ensure thatwe had a credible, science-based environmental reviewprocess that respectedFirst Nations’ rights, thatincluded robust communityconsultation, so that no pro-ject could go ahead withouta community buy-in andcommunity acceptance, andguarantees that the eco-logical and environmentaldamage can be minimizedand that the business case isworthwhile,” he said.Regarding Canada Post’s
planned cuts to home deliv-ery, which will see Ladneras the first Lower Mainlandcommunity to lose the ser-vice, Leveque said that planwould be reversed under anNDP government. The election takes place
Oct. 19.
Ottho noted the companyhas 30 days to appeal but inhis view the decision wascarefully explained and is“appeal proof.”In an e-mail to the
Optimist, an elated JimRonback with the coalitionsaid the judge’s decisionwas thorough and decisiveon all counts, not likely tobe appealed by the propo-nent.Delta South MLAVicki
Huntington said she wasecstatic for the coalition, adding it may be an historicmoment.“The members have man-
aged to do what is normallyimpossible: win against thepowers that be by engagingin hard work and excellentanalysis. And I thank allthe members of the publicwho helped in the fundrais-ing: very expensive lawyerswere hired to help win thisbattle,” she said. The coalition’s Nancy
Beaton said they movedone step closer to prevent-ing the towers.“There was no one magic
pill or strategy that createdthis success, but lots oflittle items and actions bydedicated individuals and
supporters that when addedtogether made us victoriousagainst this onerous injus-tice. Another huge relief, tosay the least,” Beaton said.Ronback and Beaton
added help is still needed tohelp pay for the enormousamount spent on legal fees. For more information, visitnotowers.webs.com.

Tsawwassen’s WinskillPark could be undergoing amajor transformation.Delta council this week
approved starting a processthat will begin by lookingfor a consultant to assistwith a community andstakeholder consultationprocess, one that will alsotake into account the impactof any redevelopment at theadjacent KinVillage. The Optimist recently
reported a new master planis in the works that couldsee KinVillage expand itscare facility, undertake arenewal of existing build-ings and add an expandedrange of seniors’ housingoptions.Members of the non-
profit society met withDelta council at a workshoprecently to discuss a vari-ety of ideas. Working witharchitect Patrick Cotter, thesociety is looking at suchideas as developing a newindependent living buildingwith community amenityspace, a new residentialcare building with over 200beds, new outdoor spacesand other changes.
The long-term planwould have “synergies”with Winskill Park, whichwould undergo its ownchanges in a separate planthat’s been initiated bymunicipal hall. KinVillageCEO Donna Ellis said theyneed to work closely withthe municipality to ensureeveryone is on the samepage.Coun. Sylvia Bishop said
community engagementwould be essential beforeany major redesign movesforward for Winskill Park.“We know that when we
go out to the communityand ask for their input, wewould have a very success-ful outcome,” she said. “Ijust want to highlight whata critical step this is forour community to have anopportunity for input.”Saying it’s still very
early in the process and thatnothing is written in stone,Coun. Robert Campbell, who chairs Delta’s parks, recreation and culturecommission, noted thingswill also be contingent onwhether KinVillage gets theprovincial funding neededto undertake an upgradeand expansion. The development of a
master plan for Winskillwould consider field devel-opment, the needs of artsand culture providers, on-site parking and more.Winskill Park was hot
topic almost 10 years agowhen the municipalitypitched an ambitious plan
to relocate the South DeltaLibrary to a new buildingat the 56th Street park. Theproject would have beenpart of a much bigger plan(costing $8.3 million intotal) that included con-struction of an artificial turfplaying field. The plan faced sub-
stantial resistance fromTsawwassen residents whodidn’t like the idea of thelibrary being moved fromits current location, nor theloss of green space at thepark. They also opposeda tax of $98 annually forfive years. In the end,Delta backed off buildinga library at Winskill, buteventually added the artifi-cial turf field.Another notable addition
at the park recently was aLions Club seniors’ well-ness park.As far as Delta retaining
a consultant to assist in theconsultation and develop-ment of a master plan, itwill go to a competitive bidprocess in which councilhas to approve the bidderand expenditure.

Speckles
Speckles was surrendered to the shelter along with her 4 friends. She likes to explore andis litter box trained. We believe an X-Pen set-up rather than a cage would be ideal for aclean little Miss like her!!
Rabbits are really fun, friendly and quirky pets! They do great as indoor pets and can belitter box trained! Not all rabbits are great with kids but out of the 30 + rabbits we have somethat would do fine! Most rabbits don’t like to picked up but are social and very interactive. For September & October rabbit adoption fees are waived and all we ask for is a donation(of any amount). All of the rabbits adopted from DCAS are spayed/neutered and providedwith ID. An adoption application is required so that we can help you prepare for the 10 yearcommitment of happy rabbit ownership!

TEDMURPHY
MURPHY’SLAW
Politics has long been a contact sport, but the advent of social media is allow-ing far more direct hits to land thesedays. In campaigns past, it was certainly not
uncommon for supporters of a candidateto shop stories about an opponent’s sup-posed indiscretions. It would be allegedthe opponent in question had said this ordone that, but unless it was documentedsomewhere, it was difficult to ascertainwhether there was any validity to theclaim. Not so anymore. Thanks to a hard-to-
expunge social media trail, and to thosethat spend copious amounts of time on it,it’s become much easier to bring the past— good, bad or appalling — to life.During this elongated federal cam-
paign we’ve seen all three major partiesdrop candidates like a bad habit afterpolitically damaging remarks have cometo light. If my math is correct, at leasta dozen MP hopefuls, stretching all theway from Nova Scotia to VancouverIsland, have either stepped down or beenremoved after inappropriate comments oractions have surfaced, largely courtesy ofsocial media. They’ve ranged from the bizarre (post-
ing videos of crank calls on YouTube andurinating in a coffee mug) to the down-right unfathomable (suggestions the 9/11attacks were a lie and that homosexualsaren’t normal). When Stephen Harper decided to
give us an 11-week campaign this timearound, I’m sure he didn’t envision theextent of the candidate carnage we’veexperienced thus far, but the additionaltime has undoubtedly allowed more skel-etons to emerge from closets. We’ve been alerted to the social media
history of a couple of our local candi-dates, presumably in an attempt to makethem look unfit to hold public office. Both times I’ve asked reporters to checkit out, being careful not to lead them inone direction or another. Both times theycame back with the same conclusion:there’s no smoking gun. That’s how Iviewed it, but I wanted to ensure I wasreading the situations correctly.Oh sure, there’s some language you
likely wouldn’t use during Sunday din-ner, particularly if Grandma is at thetable, which I’m sure is why some of theTweets in question were deleted, but thediscourse seemed far from dismissal wor-thy. I suspect officials for both parties areaware of the trails and came to similardeterminations. That won’t stop people from trolling
social media in search of dirt because ifthis campaign has proven anything, it’sthat plenty of it can be found out there.

When I was a teenager, PierreTrudeau came to my high school. He was welcomed like a rock star!In his honor, our music teacher,Mr. Ball, led the Point Grey stu-dent band in a rousing version ofHail to the Chief. After Trudeau spoke to the
packed gymnasium, I rushedthrough the breezeway for achance to meet him. He swaggeredtowards me grinning ear to eardressed in his trademark black pin-stripe suit with a crimson red rosepinned to his left lapel. With a twinkle in his eye he
shook my hand, moving quicklyto the next adoring teen along hisroute. He waved as he headed towards
the exit, burst through the glassdoors and ran down the stairs tohis waiting limo. I don’t rememberwhat he said, but I do remember
how he made me feel.Politics is emotional. Why
else would a discussion about thewearing of the niqab while takingthe Canadian oath of citizenshipbecome such a hot campaign topic?Emotion drives us, and hopefully itdrives us to the polls. When Stephen Harper called the
election, I was irritated. Despite mybackground as a broadcaster andpolitical science major, I cringedat the prospect of 11 weeks of end-less media analysis and politicalpropaganda. With election day around the
corner I’ve changed my tune and Iam grateful for this unprecedentedlong campaign. It’s led to countlessopportunities for heated emotionaldiscussions with friends and familyabout our next prime minister.Scrolling my daily Facebook
page, or reading the DeltaOptimist, everyone is talking aboutthe election and it’s not just aboutJustin’s hair, it’s about the futureof our country and how we seeourselves.Emotions are at play here in my
own community. Try having a dis-cussion with someone about portexpansion, traffic congestion, pro-tecting farmland or the rising priceof housing and you strike a chord.
Our community is ever changingand those who represent us mustspeak on our behalf, lobby forour best interests and address ouremotional needs. It’s a tall orderbut I’m confident everyone who’sput their name on the Delta ballotis emotionally committed and wemust be too.The party volunteers are calling
me at my Beach Grove home ask-ing for my support, but I alreadyknow who I’ll be voting for. I’vemade my choice, and it was withmy heart and not with my head. Igive my support to the party thatmakes me feel good about myselfand my country. In 1974 my music teacher
thought it was appropriate to playthe United States presidentialanthem for our French Canadianprime minister, something I cringeat 40 years later. Since it was firstplayed for George Washingtonin 1815, the lyrics remain true,“Hail to the chief who in triumphadvances.”We shall see who that will be
on Oct. 19 and it will be sung withemotion.Ingrid Abbott is a Delta-based

Editor:Re: Delta should treas-
ure our trees, not cut themdown, letter to the editor,
Oct. 7First of all, as an elected
official with an officeon Delta Street, VickiHuntington can’t reallydifferentiate herself as acitizen from an elected rep-resentative in a letter to theeditor.I am the biggest pro-
ponent for environmentalissues and keeping trees. However, having run abusiness on Delta Street forover 10 years I know oursidewalks are in a sad state.Over the last 10 years Ihave written multiple lettersto the municipality aboutthe state of our sidewalksin Ladner Village and havewatched municipal employ-ees over these years spendmany thousands of dollarspatching up the sidewalks. If you look outside our
yoga studio, you will seemultiple different mate-rial patching the streetand corners ground downfrom where the stones havelifted.I have watched an old
lady trip outside of ourstudio, smashing her face.To this day I still trip on thelifted sidewalks outside ofthe Dancing Pig and twoyears ago I attempted topush my 250-pound father-in-law around the villagein a wheelchair after hereceived a leg amputation.Every year when it rains,
multiple areas, includingoutside our studio, turn thesidewalks into the GreatLakes of Delta Street. When these large puddlesfreeze over, it is a danger toeverybody. They are the wrong
trees for the village. Theshallow roots have causedsignificant damage to thesidewalks and the buildings
with cracks extending rightout into the street from oneside to the other.Maybe Huntington
should try talking to theDelta Street merchantsinstead of being “baffled”by them. We are the onesthat deal with these issueson a daily basis. Yes, newtrees will be smaller but wewill still have trees. We need to think long-
term in our village and notbe so short-sighted. Wedon’t expect our electedrepresentative to be baffledby us. A perfect exampleof how the beautificationcan work can be seen along48th Avenue. The rest ofthe village needs the samerespect and treatment.I challenge our MLA to
try pushing a heavy wheel-chair around the villageand then see if she is stillbaffled.

Editor:Re: Roberts Bank eyedfor pipeline, Oct. 2
I am writing in responseto an article about theproposed Trans MountainExpansion Project. Thearticle suggests Delta is analternative option for anexpanded marine terminal. From our perspective, it isnot. We have answered ques-
tions about alternative ter-minal locations both insideand outside of the NationalEnergy Board (NEB)regulatory process currentlyunderway. In December 2013,
we submitted our 15,000Application to the NEB toexpand our pipeline andfacilities, including our
marine terminal in Burnaby. We outlined why we areproposing to expand theexisting dock facilities, andwhy it is the best option. As part of the project
Trans Mountain evaluated anumber of potential marinelocations on the West Coast, including Roberts Bank, and concluded that expan-sion of the existing terminalat Westridge is the bestalternative. Our evaluation found the
alternative locations wereless favourable for a num-ber of reasons, includingenvironmental, technicaland economic considera-tions.There is also an existing,
well-established marinesafety system in place for
vessels going to and fromWestridge Marine Terminal, which safeguards multi-ple oil-handling facilitiesoperating in Burrard Inlet, including ours.Activated in 1953, the
Trans Mountain pipelinehas been safely and respon-sibly transporting petroleumproducts from Alberta toB.C. and beyond for 60years.We have safely loaded
vessels in Burrard Inletsince 1956 without a singlespill from marine opera-tions.Trans Mountain remains
committed to seekinginput and answering ques-tions about our proposal. However, we firmly believethat expanding our existing
dock facilities in Burnabyis the best, safest and mostenvironmentally benignoption. That’s the plan we have
proposed, and that plan iscurrently almost two yearsinto the most extensiveregulatory review in thehistory of National EnergyBoard. We encourage Delta
residents and all those inter-ested to take the time tolearn more about our pro-posal. We encourage themto provide feedback and askus questions at www.trans-mountain.com.

Editor:Taking credit where cred-
it is not due shows a lackof ethics. The $440 millionthat Kerry-Lynne Findlaysays she delivered to Deltain her many speeches is notwhat it appears. Using theword “delivered” is correct
as in delivering the mail.Beware the illusion of herhard work. For starters, $365 mil-
lion was for the South DeltaPerimeter Road, a projectin the works long beforeFindlay arrived in politics. The other transportation
and infrastructure projects, such as dredging the LadnerHarbour and TFN watermain, are all expected pro-jects partially funded byany federal government. The community, educa-
tion, sports, cultural andbusiness activities must all
complete a grant form, thensubmit it to the governmentto request funding for theirprojects. This is the normalprocedure. It is the grass-roots organizations that dothe hard work in initiatingthe request, not the MP.

Editor:Today I received a
very important piece ofinformation with my dailymail. It was warning me ofterrible things that mighthappen should an NDPor Liberal government beelected on Oct. 19.I mean Thomas Mulcair
will not just ruin butdestroy 250,000 jobs ifhe is elected. Who wouldhave known? Now the Liberals, their
leader apparently just isn’tready. From what I cangather, the Liberals willcreate a deficit. Seemsthat the Conservatives dida pretty good job of thatthemselves, after taking
over the huge surplus theLiberals had left themwhen voted out.I desperately wanted to
know who I could thankfor this important informa-tion. I could see somethingwas written on the bottomof the card, but couldn’tread it. I thought whom-ever sent this to me mustsurely want to take creditfor warning everyoneabout the black hole wewill fall into if the NDP orLiberals are elected. So I pulled out my
magnifying glasses only tofind that it came from the“Authorized Agent of theConservative Party.”

Those involved with the construc-tion program at Delta Secondary areonce again looking for a large projectto get involved in.It could range from a shop, small
cabin or possibly even a tiny home, says instructor Casey Mynott.“We’re looking to work with the
community and see what projectsthat we might be able to get involvedwith,” he says.Students would work on the project
at the school initially.“We would actually frame it up in
our yard here and then that gets takendown and gets put on a truck and getstransported to a site.”Previous projects include cabins in
Stave Lake and 100 Mile House.Mynott is in his second year lead-
ing the program after it was helmedfor many years by Wayne McKinnon.“He really defined what it was to
really run a true high level carpentryprogram. So I’ve got some big shoesto fill,” says Mynott.Mynott says McKinnon, now
retired, really wanted to see the pro-gram continue.“I was totally on board, to see
the great things students were beingoffered and the opportunities theyhad.”It’s a life skills-based course, he
explains.“Your house is going to need
repairs, it’s going to need repainting, windows need to be replaced, hingeswear out. These are life skills the kids
are going to walk away with and beable to build on after they leave here.”There’s also a work experience por-
tion of the course.“That’s part of that project, because
it’s very real. There’s nothing morereal than actually building somethingsomebody’s going to live in.”Mynott, who also runs the auto-
motive program at the Ladner highschool, notes junior students in theconstruction program are involved inbuilding sheds for clients in the com-munity.The sheds are built at the school,
taken down and then erected at theclient’s home, he explains. To reach Mynott to discuss a large
project or a shed, contact [email protected] or call DSS at 604-946-4194.

How to bounce back to a healthy routineIf you’ve fallen off the wagon, dust yourself off and adjust your attitude
Having been a trainerfor over two dec-ades now (Wow, I’m
getting old. When the heckdid that happen?), I knowthere are a lot of people thathave a hard time getting fitand losing weight. In my 20-plus years of
being “in the trenches,” Ihave found that most peo-ple can find the energy andenthusiasm to start a fitnessplan, or a new eating plan.We make a commitment toourselves and we start. No problem.Where the challenge lies
is in staying committed tothose goals on an ongoing
basis.Think about how many
times you have triumphant-ly told yourself that today isgoing to be the day, only tohave that same enthusiasmwane as the days pass.Or, how many of you
have promised yourself, “Iwill start on Monday,” onlyto have Friday come andeverything we promisedourselves, and were kickingass doing on Monday andTuesday, is slowly startingto fall to the “not so impor-tant anymore” category inour daily lives. All these broken promis-
es to ourselves can leave usfeeling resentful, frustratedand angry. But, we are only human
and we all fall and slip withour health goals. I even fallprey to this. There are someweekends where pizza, cookies and rum dominate
my Saturday and Sundaynights and then Mondaycomes for me too. Now, first off I want you
to know that making poorchoices with your health, when you promised your-self that you wouldn’t, isnot failure. Failure is noteven recognizing that youneed to change your life-style.Ignorance is the big-
gest indicator to failure.Whereas admitting that youneed to change some (or alot) of things in your lifeto feel better, and then fall-ing on your face every sooften, is completely, utterlyhuman. So, what can you do
next time you fall off thewagon? You have threechoices. You can: A) Crawlback into bed and throwthe covers over your head;B) Yell and scream and
blame everyone else foryour slip up; or C) Dustyourself off and bounceback. And, you guessed it, C is
the clear winner.To successfully pick
ourselves up takes strengthfrom within, support fromthose around you, respon-sibility on your part, anability to embrace challengeand change, and a never-stop-bouncing back attitude.First, strength with-
in happens through self-love.You have to convince
yourself that you are worthit, that even if you are start-ing over again you are stillway farther ahead than youwould be if you didn’t.You need to remind your-
self that you are makingbetter choices in your life— for your life.Second, lean on those
around you.Don’t feel like a burden;
get help from your family, your social circle and evensocial media. The more people that
know you need help stayingon track, the more peoplecan help. And, who knows, maybe
one day they may needyour help too.Third, take responsibil-
ity for your actions. This is a tough one. It
can be a hard pill to swal-low, but recognize that youare completely and utterlyin control of your actions. No one is stopping you
from exercise (you arethe one creating the “I amtoo busy... too tired... toounmotivated... too sore...too old...” excuses thatstop you from getting thoserunners on), and no one isstuffing bad choices down
your throat in the formof burgers and beer. Takeresponsibility, learn fromyour mistakes, bounce backup and move on.Finally, it’s important to
embrace the challenges andthe inevitable adjust-ment that has to happen tochange the direction of yourhealth.Don’t put up stop signs.
If you want to make achange, start and then getout of your way and let thechanges happen.Work on those little
grasshopper, and thenyou will find that you canbounce back, come backand live through anything.PJ Wren is a local per-
sonal trainer and writer. You can check out her new-est online course, Over 40:Becoming a Fat BurningMachine, at www.fitness-withpj.com.

Now’s perfect timeto plant that garlic
Most vegetables need tobe watered all through theirgrowing season, but garlicis one crop that can han-dle intermittent drying outthrough May and can dowithout water altogether bythe time July starts.Garlic is very hardy and
pests dislike it — even thevoles that may spend winterturning fall-planted shallotsinto rowsof holes.Shallotsgrown incontainersescape thisproblem.October is
the perfectmonth toplant garlicbut there’sno hugeproblemplantingthroughwinter. Laterplanting, though, meansslower sprouting and clovesare often smaller.Garlic loves soil that
includes compost, fish fer-tilizer or organic fertilizer.Mulching deters weeds andholds on to moisture, evenin dry spells. This covering can be
mushroom manure, com-post or grass clippings. For planting, the garlic
clusters are broken apartand each clove plantedwith the point up. There are
many opinions on spacing, but I’ve planted five inchesapart and still harvestedlarge cloves of hard-neckgarlic.When the first garlic
shoots start emerging is thetime that many in-groundgardeners notice one ortwo renegade shoots thatescaped harvesting. If you leave them in
place, each individual clovein each cluster makes makea cluster of its own. They’re smaller, but quite
eatable.The next time garlic
needs attention is when itsprouts stalks in late spring
and produceswhat looklike largebuds. Theseare garlicscapes andthey need tobe removedor thecloves willbe smaller. They’re verytasty slicedinto stir-friesor soup.By July
(or earlierif we have another longdrought) garlic leaves startbrowning at the ends andsometime in August willhave died right back. It’sbest to harvest them in asunny spell because garliccures much better in sun.If you wait too long to
harvest them the stalksshrivel up and lose contactwith the clusters. At that point some
clusters escape harvestingentirely. You’ll find their newly-
sprouted shoots later in latefall or spring.Garlic lasts longer if you
can store it in a cool spot.Hard-neck garlic is verydifficult to braid and is bet-ter stored in a mesh bagwith the roots and stem cutshort. Mesh fruit bags canbe re-used for this.Hard-neck garlic doesn’t
keep quite as well as soft-neck garlic but hard-neckhas much larger cloves.Soft-neck is easier to braid. But the hard-neck garlic
is by far my favourite andis the variety most widelysold.Varieties abound. Music,
Red Russian, Persian Starand Fish Lake #3 are allexcellent, but there areexuberant descriptions ofcountless other garlic kinds.Another interesting varie-
ty is Elephant Garlic, whichis really a kind of leek. This has very large, long-
storing cloves. It’s saidthese can weigh up to onepound. It’s a perennial but can
apparently harbour diseasesunless you dig it up everyyear and replant a fewcloves.Garlic has very deep
roots in time. In ancientEgypt, it was apparently apopular medicine and someof the art in the pyramidsshow garlic. The Chinese are said to
have been eating garlic for6,000 years and possiblyeven earlier.Anne Marrison is happy
to answer garden questions.Send them to her via [email protected]. It helpsif you tell me your city orregion.

Live Green
While adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle mightseem like a major commit-ment, many people findsuch an endeavour is fareasier than they initiallyexpected, as some relativelyminor modifications here orthere can make a substantialimpact on the environment. One of the easiest ways
to go green is to make moreeco-friendly choices at the
grocery store. Shopping forand preparing meals canbe done in an eco-friendlyway that benefits the planetas well as personal health. Here are some ideas forgoing green at the grocerystore that do not require abig commitment:• Begin in the produce
aisle. When shopping forproduce, stock up on plentyof organic fruits and vegeta-
bles, which are now readilyavailable at many grocerystores. Ask the producemanager if the store sellslocally grown produce, andpurchase only those prod-ucts when they are avail-able.• Buy only what you
need. Shoppers are oftentempted to go from aisleto aisle, buying items theyboth need and don’t need.
Caving in to such tempta-tion can be wasteful unlessitems purchased have longshelf lives. Before visitingthe store, make a shoppinglist and stick with it. Notonly will you save money, but you will avoid throwingout spoiled foods as well.• Purchase store-made
items. If you’re lookingfor deli meats or breadfor dinner, visit the store’sbakeries, kitchens anddelis, where employeescook foods right inside ofthe supermarket, a practicethat cuts down on ship-ping of pre-made frozenfoods produced elsewhere. Many stores carry their ownhomemade breads, cakes, doughnuts, dinner entreesand sandwiches.• Ask questions in the
meat department. Don’tbe shy about asking storebutchers where the beefand chicken for sale comesfrom. If the meat and poul-try is not locally raised andall-natural, look for alterna-tives in the store or shopelsewhere.• Shop only the perimeter
of the store. Many stores
stock dietary staples alongthe outer edges of the store. The interior bulk of thestore contains packaged, processed foods that are notas eco-friendly.• Buy in bulk whenever
possible. Stock up on sta-ples like toilet paper andother items. Bulk itemsare packaged together, which reduces the amountof packaging needed.Separate meat and poultry
into smaller portion sizes athome before freezing.• Bring reusable tote
bags. Even though manyplastic shopping bags aremade from recycled mate-rials, many of these bagsend up in the trash afteruse. Reusable cloth bagsare more eco-friendly. Justbe sure to wash them fre-quently so you clean themof any bacteria that mayaccumulate over time.
Do you bring reusabletote bags with you to thefarmer’s market and pro-gram your thermostat to alower temperature whenyou’re out on the town orsleeping? Is a hybrid car parked in
your garage?Even if you are already
making great strides toreduce your environmentalfootprint, chances are youcan still find additionalways to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. For example, if you own
a pet, explore the followingways to incorporate greenliving into pet care:
AdoptionAdopting a dog, cat, bird
or bunny from a local ani-mal shelter or rescue organ-ization is more environmen-tally friendly than buyingdirectly from a breeder.Overpopulation of petscontributes to waste, andadopting a shelter animalcan help maintain the petpopulation while providingpets with a new home.
Buying in bulkPurchasing pet food and
other products in bulk savesyou trips to the store andreduces the need for addi-tional packaging. Considerchipping in with otherpet owners and splittinglarge bags of food or othersupplies if you have too
much surplus. You also candonate any extra food orsupplies you don’t use to anarea rescue group. When buying, look for
products made from natural, organic and recycled mate-rials. Shop at local pet sup-ply stores to minimize fuelconsumption.
Pet foodsSeemingly endless selec-
tions of pet food makes itdifficult to find the rightfoods for your furry friends.Foods made of all-natural,organic ingredients tend tobe the most eco-friendly.Check to see where a par-ticular food is manufac-tured.Foods that are made
overseas may not meetthe stringent requirementsplaced on food by NorthAmerican regulatory bod-ies, and transporting suchfoods consumes fuel andother resources, makingthem less eco-friendly thanlocally produced foods.
CleaningPet waste is not only a
nuisance and eye sore, butdetrimental to the environ-ment. Dog waste can betoxic to a lawn, causingdiscolouration and burns.Promptly picking up andproperly disposing of wastecan reduce the likelihood ofa potential parasite infesta-tion.
Eco-friendly shoppers can focus on organic items to decreasetheir carbon footprints.
Take an eco-friendly approach to grocery shopping
Going green can extend allthe way to pet ownership

Abundant place
M inister’sinute
Think of the years that havepassed since people have gatheredto sing a song of celebration for theyearly harvest. As the pumpkins lie waiting in the
field to be harvested and the cropsare all being pulled into the barnsready for distribution, I realize howfortunate I am to live in a place ofsuch abundance. So at this time of year especially,
I begin to hum my favorite ancienthymn by Henry Alford, “Come yethankful people come.”Come, ye thankful people, come,
raise the song of harvest home; Allis safely gathered in, ere the winterstorms begin. God our Maker dothprovide for our wants to be supplied;Come to God’s own temple, come, raise the song of harvest home.
I know that in times of sadness orsorrow it’s very difficult to find joyor celebration. However, it must bea part of our discipline of prayer toremember that God is with us andwill never leave us — even in themost difficult of circumstances. Nowis the time to give thanks!Oh give thanks to the Lord; call
upon his name; make known hisdeeds among the peoples! (Psalm105:1)So, on this Thanksgiving weekend,
let’s find something that reminds usthat we are all loved by God. Letus lift our heads to see the brightcolours of the harvest and rememberthat God calls us to proclaim God’sfaithfulness and love throughout theworld.Happy thanksgiving everyone!

Corporation of Delta staffwill join other individualsand organizations acrossB.C. next week for a prov-ince-wide earthquake drill. The B.C. Earthquake
Alliance Society is onceagain organizing the GreatBritish Columbia ShakeOut.Set for 10:15 a.m. on
Thursday, Oct. 15, theannual event is aimed atenhancing public awarenessof the potential for a majorearthquake in this regionand to encourage personalpreparedness.During the drill, partici-
pants are asked to “drop, cover and hold on” for upto two minutes in responseto a simulated earthquake.“In other parts of the
world, an increased aware-ness about what to do dur-ing an earthquake has beenproven to reduce injuriesand deaths,” fire ChiefDan Copeland stated in areport to Delta council. “AsBritish Columbia is at highrisk for a major earthquake,it is important that indi-viduals prepare for a majorearthquake and practiceproper response for selfprotection.”
B.C.’s coast is the mostearthquake-prone region inthe country.“An earthquake capable
of causing structural dam-age is predicted to occurevery 10 years,” Copelandsaid in his report. “A sub-duction earthquake occur-ring on the fault line off thewest coast of VancouverIsland could cause exten-sive damage.”The chief referenced
the August windstorm thatresulted in widespreadpower outages acrossthe Lower Mainland andVancouver Island, whichsaw some areas withoutelectricity for several days.“This was a short-term
loss of one utility butwas a clear reminder thatemergency preparednessis of utmost importanceat all times,” he said. “Ina major event, such as anearthquake, all utilities maybe down for a much longerperiod of time.”It’s recommended that
residents have enough sup-plies on hand to be self-sufficient for 72 hours fol-lowing a major disaster. For more information on
the earthquake drill, or toregister, visit www.shake-outbc.ca.

I have always been a moderately active person but havehad numerous issues with my pelvis since a skiing collisionsome forty years ago. Doing back extensions at the gymaggravated my old injuries. Shortly after that, a seeminglyinnocent ballroom dancing move left me with a constantburning sensation in my left rear pelvic area. Sitting wasextremely painful; only icing the area relieved the pain. After months of trying chiropractic, physiotherapy, andnaturopathic remedies, nothing worked.
The osteopath suggested strengthening my core area.A friend referred me to Linda Mallard, a Pilatesrehabilitative specialist at Tsawwassen Wellness Centre.Being very nervous about re-injury, initially I booked onlyprivate sessions. Linda was extremely patient with me and,in time, I felt confident enough to join the HealthyBack class.
Pilates did indeed strengthen my core but I also receivedunexpected by-products. Several years earlier, a mysteriouslump had developed on my left achilles tendon. I oftenfound it painful to walk. Traditional therapies did nothing. Tomy amazement, Pilates reduced the achilles lump in only acouple of sessions. As for my aging and occasionally achingknees, Pilates relieved them as well. It would seem that mybody loves Pilates. I feel longer, leaner, lighter and stronger —and much more pain free.
In fact, I have been so impressed with Pilates that I recentlyintroduced my 90 year old mother to the discipline. After onlyone session, my mother no longer hangs onto the walls asshe walks around the house.
The admin staff and instructors at Tsawwassen Wellnessare some of the best people I have ever dealt with. I wasalways made to feel welcome and taken care of. I wouldnot hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking tostrengthen their entire body. You won’t be disappointed.

Vitamin D deficiency drains $9 billion

Research has left no doubt that Vitamin D
deficiency - which affects 97% of Canadians
in winter - is nothing less than a Canadian
crisis and world wide problem.
Dr. William Grant (www.sunarc.org)
calculates the cost of Vitamin D deficiency
to be no less than $9 billion annually.
A Creighton University study showed
that people rich in Vitamin D have
up to a 77% lower overall cancer risk.
In the Canadian Pediatric Society
recommended that pregnant women
consult their physicians about getting
2000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily - 10 times
the current government recommendations.
The Canadian Cancer Society has called
for all Canadian adults to get 1000 I.U. of
Vitamin D daily.
The key message the Vitamin D Society
wants Canadians to receive is: that we are
at risk of Vitamin D deficiency because
of our country’s relatively weak sunshine
most of the year and the fact that
Vitamin D is rare in diet.
With thanks to the Vitamin D Society
for this info, who incidentally recommends
asking your doctor for an annual blood test
to check your Vitamin D levels.
Optimal Vitamin D blood levels are
50ng/ml (125nmol/L). Calcidiol Test.

The Vancouver Stealthannounced last week thatthey have signed Ladner’sLogan Schuss to a three-year contract pendingleague approval.Schuss, a Delta
Secondary grad and formerDelta Islander, enters histhird season in the NationalLacrosse League (NLL)and first full season withthe Stealth. The forwardappeared in seven gameswith Vancouver during the2015 season after beingacquired last March ina trade that sent JohnnyPowless to the MinnesotaSwarm (now GeorgiaSwarm).“It is a great feeling
knowing I am going to bewith the Stealth for thenext three years,” said
Schuss. “It is an awesomeorganization that I havereally enjoyed playing for,and hope to help the teamanyway I can on and off thefloor.”Schuss was the first
overall selection in the2013 NLL draft and in 34career games has rackedup 139 points (58 goals, 81assists). In his first seasonin the NLL, he was namedthe Rookie of the Yearafter registering 73 points(36 goals, 37 assists) in 18games.With his hometown of
Ladner being just a shortdrive from the LangleyEvents Centre, signing thislong-term deal is extra spe-cial for Schuss.“It is great playing so
close to home. A lot of
my family and friendswere thrilled when theyheard about the trade toVancouver last year. I hadabout 10 to 15 members ofmy family that came outon a nightly basis to watchme play, and it’s a specialfeeling looking up into thecrowd and seeing them.”Stealth president and
general manager DougLocker has been thrilledwith how Schuss has fitinto the Stealth organiza-tion.“Logan is a player we
wanted to have playing inthe Stealth organization forthe foreseeable future, andthis long-term agreementmakes that clear. He is oneof the top lefthanders in thegame and is a threat everytime he steps onto the floor.
We could not be happierhaving him with us for thenext three years.”With training camp
approaching, Schuss islooking forward to gettingback on the floor with histeammates.“I am really looking
forward to this upcomingseason. Looking at some ofthe players we have signedand drafted, I believe weare going to have one ofthe deepest rosters in theleague. In talking withsome of my teammatesthroughout the summer, they are just as excited as Iam to get things going.”The Stealth open the
2016 schedule at theLangley Events Centreon Jan. 9 against the NewEngland Black Wolves.
• The Stealth have alsosigned Ladner product EvanMessenger, one of sevenplayers the team selected inthe 2015 NLL entry draft. They have all agreed
to one-year contracts forthe 2016 season, pendingleague approval. The seven draftees will
be among the list of play-ers invited to Stealth train-ing camp beginning in lateNovember.Messenger was taken
in the fourth round, 39thoverall, after an outstand-ing year with the DeltaIslanders of the B.C. Junior“A” Lacrosse League.Messenger scored 62 points(26 goals and 36 assists)in the regular season andadded another 23 points inseven playoff games.
