In the year 2012, the much awaited New Delhi World BookFair (NDWBF) is entering the 40th year of its ‘foundation’.The NDWBF, first organized in 1972, is scheduled to have its20th edition from 25 February-04 March 2012 (Halls 1-14)at the sprawling Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. play. He said that NBT is planning to enterthe e-book market. He also spoke aboutthe various activities of NBT to promotebooks and reading habit especially amongyouth and children. He invited peoplepresent on the occasion to participate inthe forthcoming 20th New Delhi WorldBook Fair to be held from 25th Februaryto 4th March 2012. Ms. Farida M. Naik,Joint Director(A&F), NBT also spoke onthe occasion.

Around 40 well known publishersparticipated in the three day extravaganzaheld from 4th November to 6thNovember 2011 and displayed a widerange of books, offering huge discountson books.

The first day of bazaar was filledwith festivity, fun and fervour as severalcultural programmes were organized byNBT where students from Gyan PrabhaSchool of Performance, Indirapuramand Vivekanand College, University of

Delhi participated. Aninstrumental performance onSarangi by well known artistsMd. Ayub and Ghulam Wariswas also held. During the day,a book quiz was alsoorganized by NBT in whichthe students of SriVenketaswara Collegeparticipated in large number.

On the second day, aninteractive discussion on the topic“Careers in Fashion” was organized inwhich well-known fashion designers andconsultants Ms. Ashima, Mr. Ajay Mehra,Mr. T.K. Hume and Ms. Garima interactedwith students who wish to pursue careerin fashion industry.

The evening of the second day of theBook Bazaar was dedicated to humour andentertainment. A session on Hindi SatireReading was organized presided over byDr. Narendra Kohli. Hindi writers whoparticipated include Shri Alok Puranik,

Shri Awinash Vachaspati, Shri PremJanmejay, Shri Harish Naval and Ms.Sarojini Preetam. The session focused oncurrent issues which enthralled the peoplepresent on the occasion.

A Session on Storytelling in Hindi wasconducted on the third day where writersin Hindi, Shri Uday Prakash, SahityaAkademi Award winner, Shri PratapSehgal, the recipient of Maithali Sharanaward, Shri Mahesh Darpan, well-knownauthor and journalist, and Ms AkanshaPare Keshav, feature editor of themagazine Outlook participated. Dr. GangaPrasad Vimal, well-known author,presided over the function.

NBT in association with KathakKendra, Ministry of Culture,Government of India, organized apresentation of Indian classical danceKathak by renowned artist Mulla Afsarand presentation of Indian classical musicon Tabla and Pakhawaj etc.

As part of the NationalBook Week celebrations,special book exhibitionswere also organised byNBT in and around 50schools in Delhi andNCR.

A training course in Book publishingwas held in Chennai form 8-18

November 2011 in collaboration withNational Instructional Media Institute(NIMI) and the Book Sellers andPublishers’ Association of South India(BAPASI) at NIMI campus.

The course was inaugurated by Shri.Sashi Kumar, eminent media personalityand Chairman, Asian School ofJournalism. Speaking on the importanceof the written word, Shri Sashi Kumarsaid, “Writing democratised anddeheirarchised the society”. And as far astechnology is concerned, Shri Sashi Kumarsaid that it is bound to interpret new waysof reading and writing. And therefore, “Weare living in interesting times thinking ofwhat will the written word brings us”. He

The inaugural session was presidedover by Dr Dharampal Singhal. Thedignitaries present on the dais includedShri M.A. Sikandar, Director, NBT; DrBaldev Singh ‘Baddan’, Chief Editor &Joint Director, NBT; Shri D.S. Bedi,Director, Shivalik Public School; ShriSukhchain Singh Bhandari, Director,Haryana Punjabi Sahitya Akademi; DrKashmiri Lal Zakir, Vice-Chairman,Haryana Urdu Akademi; Shri ManmohanSingh Daun and Shri Sukhdev Madpuri.On this occasion, Puadhi Punjabi Sath,Mohali extended a special honour to ShriM.A. Sikandar, Director, NBT.

A book release function was also heldwhere eighteen titles in Punjabi forchildren, published by the NBT, werereleased. The released books were namely:Saheli, Ajube, Chatrai da Puraskar, Neem

Baba, Faisla ate Purab diyan HorKahaniyan, Baghiad da Nachna, Dard daRishta Ate aur Kahaniyan, Ki Hoya, Ravan,Nevla bhi Raja, Bulbul ate Munnu, Jungalde Dost, Gulle Awas, Pyara Dost, JeelaniBano diyan do Bal Kahaniyan, Amb WaliChidi, Bans da Ghar, and Choti Keedi diBaddi Dahwat. Dr Baljeet Singh presenteda paper on the books released.

The inauguration was followed by anexhibition of paintings by school childrenfrom eight different schools of Mohali.Later students enacted a playand danced to the tune ofbhangra. A Children’s KaviDarbar was also held where 25students from twelve differentschools participated andpresented their poems. This

programme concluded with children beinggiven books as prizes.

In the Meet-the-Author programme,Shri Sukhdev Madpuri and ShriManmohan Singh Daun, popular children’swriters, interacted with the children. APoet’s Meet was held later where SurjitMarjara, Manjeet Kaur Ambalwi, AtmaSingh Chitti, Darshan Banoor, KomalSingh, Mahendra Singh Manpuri, SiriramArsh, Daljeet Kaur Daun, Dr GurminderSiddhu, Dr Manjeet Indra, BaburamDiwana, Surendra Gill, Devinder Preet,Paramjeet Param, Surjeet Artist, BhagwanSingh Deepak and Shivnath.

NBT also organised a book exhibitionfrom 12 to 29 November 2011 at ShivalikPublic School, Mohali; Paragon SeniorSecondary School, Mohali; Ropar;Navashahar; Khanna and Sarhind.

NAT IONAL BOOK WEEK AT MOHAL I

National Book Trust, India in associationwith Kendriya Punjabi Lekhak Sabhaorganised a programme in Punjabi Bhavanat Punjabi Akademi, Ludhiana on 23October 2011.

Three titles in Punjabi published by theNBT, India were released, namely SantSingh Sekhon diyan Chaunviyan kahaniyan,Santokh Singh Dheer diyan ChaunviyanKahaniyan and Sat Bharati Sant. Shri M.A.Sikandar, Director, NBT and spoke about

Book Trust, India organised a two-day literary programme at Godhra,Gujarat in association with theGodhra Sarvjanik Shikshan Mandalon 20 and 21 November 2011.

“Books are of two types, thosewhich awaken your soul and otherswhich entertain and relax you. Butthese are the times when we requirebooks that need to stir us to dosomething,” said Shri Praveen Pandya,well-known poet and playwright whilespeaking at the inauguration of theprogramme, which was held in theChandramrit Hall of the New Era School,

Godhra on 20 November 2011.Smt Nayna Shah, popular children’s

writer talked about the importance ofbooks in our life. She said that thoughchoosing the right book is a tedious taskbut one can be sure that if it is an NBTbook, it has to be the best.

The inauguration was presided overby Shri Sharad Kumar Shah, Head,Godhra Sarvjanik Shikshan Mandal whothanked NBT for organising the event.Others who spoke on the occasionincluded Shri Dakshesh Shah, Principal,M&M Shah School and Shri MiteshDesai, Principal, New Era School.

On 21 November 2011, NBT’smobile van exhibition was held atvarious corners of the Godhra city.A large number of school childrenvisited the van and bought books oftheir choice along with the teachersand principals of their schools.

was organised at Mandi, HimachalPradesh by the National Book Trust, Indiain association with Himachal KalaSanskriti Bhasha Akademi, Shimla on 15and 16 November 2011, at the ConferenceHall, Office of the Deputy Commissioner,Mandi.

The year 2011 being the birthcentenary year of eminent writers Agyeyaand Shamsher, four titles in Hindi onAgyeya and Shamsher published by theNBT were released along with threepopular science titles in English by ShriIshwar Das Dhiman, Hon’ble Ministerof State for Education, HimachalPradesh. Commending NBT’s efforts andcongratulating it for organising such aprogramme at a place like Mandi, theHon’ble Minister was of the opinion thatsuch functions give a positive direction

to the society. “I feel that the freedom ofour country owes a tad to the revolutionarywritings of great Indian writers, poets andthinkers,” Shri Dhiman added.

The titles released were namely,Shamsher Bahadur Singh: SankalitKavitayen, Agyey: Pratinidhi Nibandh,Agyey ki Pratinidhi Kahaniyan, Agyey kiPratinidhi Kavitayen, Basic Biotechniques,Primer on Characterising Biodiversity andPrimer on Forest Biodiversity. The book

release function was followed by adiscussion session where Dr SatyapalSehgal and Dr Vijay Vishal presentedpapers on the books released and whereDr Rekha, Murari Sharma, GangaramRaji, Sunder Lohia, KrishnachandraMahadeviya, Chandra Rekha Dadhwal,Vikram Musafir, Prakash Badal, YadvendraSharma and Dinu Kashyap participatedin the discussions.

The following day Dr Sanjeev Thakurpresented a paper on the released popularscience books in English. Later a QuizCompetition on science based topics forchildren was held, in which four studentseach from eight schools of Mandiparticipated. DAV, CPS Mandi wasadjudged the winner in the competition.The function concluded with prizedistribution to children.

The honorable speaker Dash Beahur,another prominent children’s litterateur inhis speech epitomised that “Books caninspire a person to uphold the truth in allsituations of life.” Among other eminentspeakers Dr Rajkishore Parhi, a formerPrincipal of Navoday Vidyalay and oneprominent children’s author, Dr SaratKumar Biswai, the Director, Mass

Education, Odisha and Shri BrundabanSatpathy, Inspector of Schools, Cuttackwere present. All of them unanimouslyopined that books are the unfailing friendsof life and they unravel the truth of lifeand the world. Our increasing interest inreading of books can help our literature,culture and society flourish in a great

measure. They also extolled the role ofNBT in the promotion andpopularisation of children’s Literature.

Sixteen books for childrentranslated from English and otherIndian languages into Odia, publishedby the Trust under Nehru BalPustakalay series were released by theGuests together with ten students. Abook exhibition of NBT publications

was also organised. There was a goodresponse especially from the students inbuying books that spoke volumes of theirkeen interest in reading.

Dr Manindra Mohanty, a researcherin the field of Odia Children’s literature,presided over the Meeting. A training course in Book publishingwas held in Chennai form 8-18

November 2011 in collaboration withNational Instructional Media Institute(NIMI) and the Book Sellers andPublishers’ Association of South India(BAPASI) at NIMI campus.

The course was inaugurated by Shri.Sashi Kumar, eminent media personalityand Chairman, Asian School ofJournalism. Speaking on the importanceof the written word, Shri Sashi Kumarsaid, “Writing democratised anddeheirarchised the society”. And as far astechnology is concerned, Shri Sashi Kumarsaid that it is bound to interpret new waysof reading and writing. And therefore, “Weare living in interesting times thinking ofwhat will the written word brings us”. He

The inauguration was followed by anexhibition of paintings by school childrenfrom eight different schools of Mohali.Later students enacted a playand danced to the tune ofbhangra. A Children’s KaviDarbar was also held where 25students from twelve differentschools participated andpresented their poems. This

programme concluded with children beinggiven books as prizes.

In the Meet-the-Author programme,Shri Sukhdev Madpuri and ShriManmohan Singh Daun, popular children’swriters, interacted with the children. He invited peoplepresent on the occasion to participate inthe forthcoming 20th New Delhi WorldBook Fair to be held from 25th Februaryto 4th March 2012. Ms. Farida M. Naik,Joint Director(A&F), NBT also spoke onthe occasion.

Around 40 well known publishersparticipated in the three day extravaganzaheld from 4th November to 6thNovember 2011 and displayed a widerange of books, offering huge discountson books.

The first day of bazaar was filledwith festivity, fun and fervour as severalcultural programmes were organized byNBT where students from Gyan PrabhaSchool of Performance, Indirapuramand Vivekanand College, University of

Delhi participated. Aninstrumental performance onSarangi by well known artistsMd. Ayub and Ghulam Wariswas also held. During the day,a book quiz was alsoorganized by NBT in whichthe students of SriVenketaswara Collegeparticipated in large number.

On the second day, aninteractive discussion on the topic“Careers in Fashion” was organized inwhich well-known fashion designers andconsultants Ms. Ashima, Mr. Ajay Mehra,Mr. T.K. Hume and Ms. Garima interactedwith students who wish to pursue careerin fashion industry.

The evening of the second day of theBook Bazaar was dedicated to humour andentertainment. A session on Hindi SatireReading was organized presided over byDr. Narendra Kohli. Hindi writers whoparticipated include Shri Alok Puranik,

Shri Awinash Vachaspati, Shri PremJanmejay, Shri Harish Naval and Ms.Sarojini Preetam. The session focused oncurrent issues which enthralled the peoplepresent on the occasion.

A Session on Storytelling in Hindi wasconducted on the third day where writersin Hindi, Shri Uday Prakash, SahityaAkademi Award winner, Shri PratapSehgal, the recipient of Maithali Sharanaward, Shri Mahesh Darpan, well-knownauthor and journalist, and Ms AkanshaPare Keshav, feature editor of themagazine Outlook participated. Dr. GangaPrasad Vimal, well-known author,presided over the function.

NBT in association with KathakKendra, Ministry of Culture,Government of India, organized apresentation of Indian classical danceKathak by renowned artist Mulla Afsarand presentation of Indian classical musicon Tabla and Pakhawaj etc.

As part of the NationalBook Week celebrations,special book exhibitionswere also organised byNBT in and around 50schools in Delhi andNCR.
