Scholarships from Bangkok Bank Public Company Limited

Computer Training on E-Learning ProgramThe International Affairs and Corporate Relations Division of SIIT and the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC) arranged a computer training program, namely, “E-Learning Program,” at SIIT, Rangsit Campus, on October 29, 2013. Sixty school teachers from Bangkok and the Metropolitan Region attended the training program. The objectives of this computer training program were to share computer knowledge with our neighboring school teachers and to increase the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of SIIT.

Delegates from the Defense Technology Institute (Public Organization) Ministry of Defense

Ten delegates from the Defense Technology Institute (Public Organization), DTI, Ministry of Defense, led by Dr. Pornthep Nisamaneephong (Deputy Director, General Service of DTI) and Rear Admiral Wachara Karunyavanij, Royal Thai Navy (Executive Director, Knowledge and Publication Management Department of DTI), visited SIIT, Rangsit Campus, on December 20, 2013. The visit was intended to initiate academic collaboration between DTI and SIIT. Academic and research collaboration, strategic planning, operation, management, and joint academic activities between the two institutions were discussed. DTI is responsible for large equipment research and development that requires advanced science and technology and extends existing knowledge to a more complex and advanced level. To develop prototypes that satisfy the requirements of the armed forces, resources within the Ministry of Defense are utilized, along with the cooperation with other research organizations, educational institutes, private sectors, and industries. DTI also provides academic services by distributing and transferring scientific and technological knowledge to various organizations.

The Bangkok Bank Public Company Limited, led by Mr. Watchara Phongthai, Branch Manager - Klongluang Branch, donated a total of 50,000 baht to SIIT on December 19, 2013. The donation was deposited to the Sirindhorn Technology Scholarship Fund. The fund is used for granting scholarships to more than 300 students annually. The distribution of scholarships to appropriate scholarship

recipients is administered by the Institute with recommendations from the SIIT Scholarships Committee.


New Faculty MembersDr. Chung-Hao Hsu joined Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT) as a full-time faculty member of the School of Manufacturing Systems and Mechanical Engineering (MSME) in October 2013. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University, USA, M.S. in Applied Mechanics from National Taiwan University, Taiwan, and B.S. in

Mechanical Engineering from National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan. His research areas are nano energy with applications in renewable energy technologies and thermal management of integrated circuits (IC), materials science and engineering, nanotechnology fabrication, mechanical design and automotive engineering, and finance theory in technology management.

Dr. Konstantinos (Kostas) Senetakis joined SIIT as a full-time faculty member of the School of Civil Engineering and Technology (CET) in October 2013. He obtained his Ph.D. in Experimental Soil Dynamics, M.Sc. in Earthquake Eng inee r i ng and S t ruc tu ra l Dynamics, and B.Eng. in Civil Engineering, all from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He worked as a postdoctoral

research fellow at City University of Hong Kong for 2 years. His research areas include experimental soil mechanics and dynamics, micromechanics - contact mechanics and tribology, geosynthetics - reinforced soils - ground improvement, and geotechnical earthquake engineering.

Dr. Thunyaseth Sethaput joined SIIT as a full-time faculty member of the School of MSME in October 2013. He obtained his Ph.D. in Systems and Control Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, USA, and B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering, SIIT, Thammasat University, Thailand. His research areas include systems biology, biomedical mechanics, neurosurgical systems, cardiovascular systems,

simulation modeling, signal analysis, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Dr. Truong Ton Hien Duc joined SIIT as a full-time faculty member of the School of MSME in November 2013. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Systems Engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Korea, M.B.A. in International Business, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, and B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT),

Vietnam. His research areas are bullwhip effect, inventory management and control, time series forecasting, supply chain management, revenue management, supply chain risk management, and contract management.

Excellent Paper Award at the 2013 4th International Conference on Distance Learning and Education (ICDLE 2013)

Ms. Nichawan Jarutawai, Ms. Asama Lowsuwansiri, Mr. Poranut Taechamaneesthid, Ms. Nattana Tangsangob, and Assistant Professor Dr. Pornpimol Chongphaisal (all from the School of Management Technology (MT), SIIT), in collaboration with Ms. Yau Yan Wong (Kasetsart University Laboratory School Center for Educational Research and Development, International Program) and Dr. Voranij Vasuratna (Bangkok University), have won the Excellent Paper Award at the 2013 4th International Conference on Distance Learning and Education (ICDLE 2013), which was held during October 12-13, 2013, in Paris, France. Among over 120 papers which had been submitted, the paper entitled “Mindfulness Training at Schools in Thailand: an Experimental Approach” was selected to receive the Excellent Paper Award. The paper discussed two experiments undertaken at a school and a university in Thailand utilizing “mindfulness” concepts as the basis for development of an original, work-skill integrated with mindfulness training. The training has been adopted in classes for a specified time period with the aim of enhancing students’ emotional intelligence.


The 7th IPS International Collaboration Symposium 2013 at IPS Waseda University, JapanAsst. Prof. Dr. Suthathip Suanmali (a faculty member of the School of Management Technology, MT) and Ms. Nuchjarin Intalar (a graduate student of the School of Manufacturing Systems and Mechanical Engineering, MSME) were invited to participate in the 7th IPS International Collaboration Symposium hosted by the Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems (IPS), Waseda University. The symposium was held during November 11-13, 2013, at Waseda University, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Japan. The Symposium was intended to bring together researchers from different countries and to promote a synergy collaborated research with the creation and exchange of ideas related to IPS fields. Research posters and oral presentations were presented by both SIIT representatives. Asst. Prof. Dr. Suthathip Suanmali introduced academic programs and degrees offered by SIIT to the audiences. She also presented a research project entitled “Asset and Route Maintenance Management Module” done by

a group of researchers from the Transportation Research Center (TREC), SIIT. Ms. Nuchjarin Intalar presented both posters and an oral presentation on the research entitled “Multi-objective optimization for large-scale power generation system with CO2 emission.”

Mr. Dana Blouin, a Ph.D. student of the School of Information, Computer, and Communication Technology (ICT), was a panelist and presenter at the IoT Workshop 2013 which took place at the Computer History Museum, Silicon Valley, CA, USA, during November 5-6, 2013. The event was hosted by the IEEE Standards Association. The workshop explored future technologies, research, and standards needed to allow the expected 100 billion “things” - sensors and actuators embedded in physical objects - to be electronically connected via the Internet by 2020. Keynote speakers and panelists from Siemens, General Motors, Qualcomm, GE, and Stanford University addressed security and privacy issues, semantic web, smart electricity grids, and health-care applications.

In addition, a discussion to further establish several dual degrees between SIIT and Waseda University took place to determine courses and possible research areas for each dual degree.

Top Voted Presentation at the Internet of Things (IoT) Workshop 2013

Mr. Dana presented on utilizing the Internet of Things to improve global water supply. He discussed research issues utilizing low-power wireless sensor water quality networks to assist in water supply management. He was the top voted presentation which secured full financial support from IEEE. He was also a panelist discussing IoT research and applications.

With 10 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, Mr. Dana is now researching new protocols for the Internet of Things under supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Steven Gordon.

ACM – ICPC Asia Phuket Regional Programming ContestThe ACM-ICPC is one of the world’s most prestigious worldwide team-based programming contests. In the contest, each team is given real life problems to solve by coding. During November 21-22, 2013, the “ASCII” Team consisting of Mr. Thanakron Tandavas, Miss He Rin Kim, and Miss Pimprapai Wisuthseriwong, all from the School of Information, Computer, and Communication Technology (ICT) under supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Gun Srijuntongsiri, was qualified to attend a pre-final round of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Asia Regional Round at Prince of Songkla University, Phuket, Thailand. Furthermore, the final round of this contest is scheduled to be held in Russia.


TU Open House 2013Thammasat University (TU) held the “TU Open House 2013” during November 13 – 14, 2013, at the Thammasat University Convention Park, TU, Rangsit Center. The objective of the fair is to provide admissions and course information of faculties in TU. There were a lot of activities, such as demonstration of academic performance, campus tour, and sharing of experiences about entrance examinations, studying, and student life by TU students and alumni.

The 8th TU Rice Farming Project: Harvesting RiceAsst. Prof. Dr. Veeris Ammarapala (Assistant Director for Student Affairs and Alumni Relations, Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology, SIIT), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chalie Charoenlarpnopparut (Assistant to the Rector for Student Affairs, Thammasat University, TU), faculty and staff members, and SIIT students participated in harvesting the rice grown by the Thammasat community in the rice field of TU, Rangsit Campus, on December 18, 2013.

The harvested rice will be milled, cooked, and served to new TU students of academic year 2014, as part of the welcoming activity during the TU Orientation Event.

SIIT also joined the fair in the exhibition area. Information of the Institute was presented and several research topics, such as, “Nanoencapsulation of Active Compounds from Plants using Beta-cyclodextrin and Microwave Enhancement” (which won a Gold Medal and a special prize of excellent achievement from the Malaysian Association of Research Scientists (MARS) at the 41st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, Switzerland) from the School of Bio- Chemical Engineering and Technology (BCET), “Automatic Lighting System for Smart Homes” from the School of Information, Computer and Communications Technology (ICT), and “ErgoCom: A Computer Program for Recommended Ergonomic Settings of Computer Workstation and Accessories” from the School of Management Technology (MT), were demonstrated. The SIIT exhibition attracted attention from school students and visitors. There were more than 10,000 visitors including school students, parents, and other participants attending this fair.


Donation for Haiyan Victims in the PhilippinesOn December 13, 2013, a group of SIIT faculty and staff members and students, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Waree Kongprawechnon (Assistant Director for International Affairs and Corporate Relations) and Asst. Prof. Dr. Veeris Ammarapala (Assistant Director for Student Affairs and Alumni Relations), represented the SIIT community to present a donation for the victims of the Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Philippines to the Philippines Ambassador in Thailand,

Ambassador Jocelyn Batoon-Garcia, at the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in the Kingdom of Thailand, Bangkok, Thailand. Our deepest sympathy was conveyed to the Philippines government and her people.

Voluntary activities to raise funds were done among SIIT students (coordinated by the SIIT Student Committee) and faculty and staff members throughout November 2013. The total amount of 66,230.87 Baht (USD 2,063.91) was transferred to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center (NDRRMC) account at the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP).

Internship and Job Opportunities for SIIT Students and Graduates

Schlumberger Overseas S.A., Siam Cement Group, DST Worldwide Services (Thailand) Ltd., International Financial Data Services Limited, Siemens Limited, Toshiba Thailand Co., Ltd., Kasikorn Bank PCL., Siam Commercial Bank, Ek-Chai Distribution System Co., Ltd. (Tesco Lotus), Digital Alchemy (Australia) Pty Limited, and Defense Technology Institute (Public Organization) visited SIIT to introduce their companies, offer job opportunities to fourth-year students who will graduate in academic year 2013, and recruit third-year students for technical internships.

Trip for Basic Thai Language CourseEvery semester, SIIT arranges basic Thai language courses (listening and speaking) for new SIIT international students to help foreign students know basic Thai language for daily life. At the end of the course, a one-day study trip is organized.

In semester 1/2013, the International Affairs and Corporate Relations Division arranged a study trip to Chon Buri province on September 29, 2013. International students had a chance to practice the market conversation that they learned in the classroom at the Pattaya floating market. Furthermore, they visited an art museum named “Art in Paradise” and enjoyed taking photos with 3D illusion painting. There were different kinds of painting, such as underwater world, dinosaur world, waterfall, Egypt, and historical places in Thailand.


Orientation for New Exchange Students

The International Affairs and Corporate Relations Division held an orientation for new international students who enrolled in courses at SIIT in semester 2/2013 on November 6, 2013, at SIIT (Rangsit Campus). There were 69 new international students, including exchange students from SIIT’s partner universities and graduate students who received

SIIT graduate scholarships in various scholarship programs. The orientation was intended to provide information about academic life, regulations, visa issue, and campus life, and Thai culture to new students.

In conjunction with this orientation event, SIIT students from the International Club also held a campus tour on November 7, 2013 in order to introduce the facilities around the campus to new international students.

The Scholarship Orientation and Agreement Signing for the “EFS and AUN/SEED-Net Scholarship programs” was organized on November 6, 2013, at SIIT (Rangsit Campus) by the Student Affairs and Alumni Relations Division. There were twenty-four foreign students qualified for the EFS (Excellent Foreign Students) and AUN/SEED-Net (ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network) scholarship programs in semester 2/2013. The scholarship recipients were informed about the scholarship details, including scholarship policies, privileges, service obligations, and payment guidelines.

The EFS scholarship program is fully supported by the Sirindhorn Technology Scholarship Fund. The AUN/SEED-Net is mainly supported by the Japanese Government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and partially supported by the ASEAN Foundation with matching funds from SIIT. Both scholarship programs provide full tuition and education support fees, living allowance, and other benefits for excellent foreign students from reputable universities to pur sue a mas te r ’s o r doctoral degree at SIIT.


Thai Study Day

The International Affairs and Corporate Relations Division held a “Thai Study Day” on November 8, 2013, at SIIT (Rangsit Campus). This event was organized for foreign exchange students who enrolled in courses at SIIT in semester 2/2013. Students learned Basic Thai language and culture, such as, greeting in Thai, Thai currency and shopping, Thai food, directions and transportation, tourism and sightseeing, and significant traditions. At the end of the event, students learned to sing and dance a Loy Krathong song

Design and Decorate My Krathong 2013On November 15, 2013, the Student Affairs and Alumni Relations Division of SIIT organized an activity called “Design and Decorate My Krathong 2013” at the Rangsit and Bangkadi campuses. The purpose of this activity was to encourage Thai and international students to share their ideas in designing and decorating hand-made krathongs. More than 300 Thai and international students, together with faculty and staff members, participated in this activity. Most of the krathongs were taken to float at the “TU Loy Krathong Festival 2013” at Thammasat University, Rangsit Center.

In addition, the Student Committee of SIIT also organized the “SIIT Krathong Contest” to unite SIIT students in each Baan. There were 2 themes for the contest: Theme A - Beautiful Krathong and Theme B - Creative Krathong. The most beautiful Krathong by a group of “Baan 3” students and the most creative Krathong by a group of “Baan 11” students won prizes.


Welcoming Activities for New Students – Semester 2/2013

On November 21, 2013, two activities, namely, “First Meeting” and “SIIT-TU Campus Tour,” to welcome new undergraduate students of semester 2/2013, were organized by a group of second-year students under supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Veeris Ammarapala (Assistant Director for Student Affairs and Alumni Relations) and the SIIT Student Committee. The “First Meeting” activity was intended to provide freshmen an opportunity to meet each other, and to join recreational activities in order to establish unity among students. The “SIIT-TU Campus Tour” activity was intended to provide useful information regarding the learning facilities, buildings, and sport complexes at the Rangsit Campus to freshmen.

Cultural trip

The International Affairs and Corporate Relations Division arranged a cultural trip for international students and Thai students (from the International Club) on December 1, 2013. The students visited the Damnoen Saduak floating market and Siam Cultural Park in Ratchaburi province, and visited Bang Kung Temple in Samut Songkhram province. The cultural trip was intended to let foreign students learn Thai culture and traditional lifestyle with Thai students (from the Buddy System Program).

SIIT Alumni Special SeminarKhun Paminee Kusolpoon, an SIIT alumnus - batch 6, gave a special lecture to SIIT students on December 17, 2013, at Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), Rangsit Campus, on the topic ent i t led “Tips for Job Applications.” She presently serves as a Technical Performance Manager at BG Thailand, a leading international energy business company. She was proud to share her working life with more than 13 years of experience in leadership, management, and technical operations

in top international organizations. The students received useful tips in selecting good employers, including knowledge that can be applied to their own future. Khun Paminee met SIIT faculty members, students, and staff for increasing better working relationships.


14th Chemical Engineering Sports Activity

During October 23-25, 2013, the School of Bio-Chemical Engineering and Technology (BCET) participated in the 14th

Chemical Engineering Sports Activity, known as “Sritrang Game.” This event has been held annually to enhance relationships among chemical engineering students from different universities across Thailand. Hosting of the sports activity has also been alternated. This year, the sports activity was organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Prince of Songkla University (PSU). Students from the School of BCET, SIIT, won the second runner-up prize in the men’s basketball activity.

Building Camp at Baan Ta-Ko-Bhee School, Tak Province

On October 21-31, 2013, more than 50 students from the Volunteer Club of SIIT and the Issara Sanfun Group of Thammasat University jointly constructed a library building at Baan Ta-Koh-Bhee School, Tambon Mae Song, Amphoe Tha Song Yang, Tak province. The students devoted their effort to construct a 6 m x 4 m building. The structure of this new library building is made of steel which is much better than the previous one that was made of wood. The building will be used as a public library, not only for students, but also for villagers. In addition, the students helped to install a new permanent flag pole at the school. This volunteer activity benefits the education of children and strengthens the local community.

English Camp at Wat Khai SchoolThe Volunteer Club of SIIT and the Issara Sanfan Group of Thammasat University jointly organized a one-day voluntary activity at Bang Pahan, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. On December 22, 2013, a group of 64 students, under supervision of Dr. Itthisek Nilkhamhang (club advisor), went to Wat Khai School to organize an English camp, games, and other recreational activities for its students. The purpose of this trip was to teach basic English for daily life and to provide a chance for the students to speak English with foreigners (i.e., exchange students from Germany and Japan). In addition, cash and supplies were also donated to the school and its students.


TU Cheer Song Contest 2013

The SIIT Student Committee, in conjunction with the SIIT Music and Chorus Club, participated in the “TU Cheer Song Contest 2013” on December 23, 2013 at Gymnasium 5, Thammasat University (TU), Rangsit Center. The “TU Cheer Song Contest” is a traditional annual chorus singing competition in which students from the faculties in TU compete in teams. This year, an SIIT team of 50 students participated in the competition and won the first runner-up prize for The Royal Trophy graciously given by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn’s daughter, Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha.

There are five exchange students from Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Finland. Among them, two students (from left), Mr. Joonas Petteri Kahiluoto and Mr. Jukka Verneri Ruotsila, are enrolled in the Management Technology (MT) program. The other three students (from right): Mr. Oskari Raimonpoika Kruth, Mr. Joonas Kristeri Rintala, and Mr. Mika Lalevi Latvala are enrolled in the Civil Engineering (CE) program.

University of Porto, PortugalMr. Ponkris Klaywittaphat (a Ph.D. s t uden t f r om the S choo l o f Manu fa c t u r i n g Sy s t ems and Mechanical Engineering (MSME) in the area of Nuclear Fusion Energy) received a scholarship from Erasmus Mundus Action 2 (Lotus II) Project for a Student Exchange Program to conduct research in nuclear fusion at the Department of Engineering Physics, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Portugal, during September 2013 – July 2014. The project is financed by the European Commission.

UEHAS is an interdisciplinary program by the Department of Urban Engineering and School of International Health of the University of Tokyo, along with six partner universities in Thailand and Indonesia. This program implements a student exchange program with mutual transfer of credits.
