JUNE 2011 DEJA VU IN THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS My wife and I have been fortunate enough to go to the British Virgin Islands on a number of occasions. Usually when we go we rent either a mono-hall or a catamaran. We rented a 46 foot catamaran from C.Y.O.A Charter Company in St. Thomas. The catamaran had four liveable staterooms and four electric heads. The cat was equipped with generator, air conditioning, t.v., stereo, and a power wench for the davit. We saw many beautiful sights. On the first evening we stayed at Hawk’s Nest Bay on the Island of St. John and saw an absolutely gorgeous sunset. We were one of four boats in the Bay that evening. The next day we went to Soper’s Hole which is also called the West End on Tortola and checked in through British Customs. We had a refreshing drink at the Pussers’ Bar, and then quickly made way for the caves on Norman Island. The caves are an event that is not to be missed. You can swim into three fully enclosed caves. The caves have fish in them and unusually brightly colored coral due to the lack of sunlight. We also enjoyed snorkeling the wall which is on the outside of the caves. There were four boats sharing the caves with us that afternoon. After an hour and a half of that experience we went to the Indians which are right outside of Pelican Island. The snorkeling was spectacular. The day was capped off by going to the BIGHT on Norman Island for the evening. We had drinks and took photographs of the sunset from the Pirates Bight Restaurant. Shortly thereafter, we went to Willy Thornton’s Restaurant for dinner. The night was capped off by an absolutely gorgeous sky filled with thousands of stars which are CONTINUED ON PAGE 8 the

Memorial Day 2011 It is important for us to remember as we celebrate Memorial Day 2011 that in the pursuit of freedom everyone gives something, but some give everything and this is the day to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifi ce. I started the day by placing a new American fl ag on the bow of my boat as a tribute to servicemen in the harbor. The WHYC also chose to fl y the American fl ag on the highest mast in the courtyard. We fi nished the afternoon with a cookout and are fi nally glad to have some warm weather. It was a busy

weekend that brought us four new members. Be sure to check the calendar for all the events coming next weekend including the wine tasting and Saturday night dinner. Wii bowling will be starting soon as wll and many other events planned for a fun fi lled summer.

See you at the club!

BVIunseeable in an area where there is signifi cant light. Two shooting stars were spotted that evening. The next morning we traveled by Peter Island ( in honor of Peter Webster, one of the participants), Cooper Island, Salt Island, and snorkeled over the WRECK OF THE RHONE. The WRECK OF THE RHONE is a fascinating 1860’s ship wreck which is approximately 20 feet under the surface. The visibility was easily 80 feet and the fi sh were plentiful. For some reason the rays of sun coming in from above us were sparkling throughout the water. It was quite beautiful. After the WRECK OF THE RHONE, we went up to Virgin Gorda and spent the night at the Bitter End Yacht Club. We got a mooring ball right next to shore. For some reason some of the crew wanted massages and in all four people had that experience. The Bitter End Yacht Club is a wonderful place to go, has many luxuries and the staff is extremely friendly to boaters. We ate dinner at SABA ROCK. SABA ROCK is a unique destination. It is a small island right in the center of the cut between two large islands. Built on the island is a resort , restaurant and bar. The restaurant and bar has a fantastic collection of antique outboard motors and antique racing boats. The next day we went across North Sound and obtained a mooring ball at Leverick Bay. Leverick Bay is a very nice resort, but is considerably understated compared to the Bitter End Yacht Club. We called the hotel front desk at Leverick Bay on our way over to Leverick Bay and had them arrange for a taxi. The taxi took us from Leverick Bay to the BATHS. The trip along the top of the island was absolutely wonderful. The view was probably at least 12 to 14 miles. The water was the stereotypical aqua blue that you think of when you think of the Caribbean. We arrived at the BATHS and asked our taxi driver to come back for us in 5 hours. There is a restaurant at the top of the BATHS amazingly enough called “Top of the BATHS’. The restaurant has a phenomenal view and a fresh water pool. The food was quite tasty and the costs were relatively modest given the location. We spent approximately three hours going down to, walking through, and coming up from the BATHS. That is an experience not to be missed. Everyone should see the BATHS at least once in their life. I have been through the BATHS more than eight times and still see new things. It is imperative to waterproof wear shoes while walking through the BATHS and on the paths up and down.

As an alternative to taking a cab to the BATHS, many travelers moor their boats on the day moorings outside of the BATHS and take a dinghy in to one of the dinghy lines. Hopping off the dinghy you then swim into the beach. The best beach to do this is the beach at the bottom of the island. Have a ladder on the dinghy to make your re-entry possible. That evening we ate dinner at what is reputed to be the fi nest restaurant in the Virgin Islands. The restaurant is on the top fl oor of the Leverick Bay Resort. While it was pricey, it was not outrageous and the food was delicious. Peter and Connie Webster chose a bottle of wine that was one of the tastiest I have ever had.The next morning we fi lled up with water at the dock at Leverick Bay. That service is included in your $20 mooring fee. What we didn’t know was that the restaurant would have reimbursed us our mooring ball fee if we had asked them to.After fi lling up with water, we sailed over to Sandy Cay. Sandy Cay is an approximately one square mile island with an amazing sand beach in the lee of the island. We anchored off of the beach, and a number of us went ashore to walk the trail that goes all of the way around the

island and discovered the beaches. You must wear shoes. At about 4:00 p.m. that afternoon we left Sandy Cay and attempted to fi nd a mooring ball in Great Harbor on Jost Van Dyke. The mooring balls were all taken and the boats were anchored right next to each other in the remaining spaces so we went to Little Harbor. Little Harbor was a diffi cult anchor, but fi nally was accomplished. There is another Bay on Jost Van Dyke that is called White Bay. White Bay is off limits to a number of the charter groups, but is very worthwhile if you are willing to take the risk. The next morning we traveled by Sandy Spit, and a very well protected Bay on the north easterly end of Jost Van Dyke. I have never had the opportunity to go by that area, and I intend to spend a night there on my next visit. We then traveled down to Leinester Bay on St. John’s. Leinester Bay has an unforgettable beach which is probably a mile long. We were fortunate enough to get the ball that was closest to the beach and have relative privacy. As you sat on the front trampoline of the catamaran, at some times it felt like you were the only boat in the anchorage. Some of our party walked the trail up to the abandoned, yet restored, rum distillery. I didn’t go, but I saw the pictures and it was quite interesting.

The next day we went to the City of Cruz Bay and checked back into the United States through customs. Cruz Bay is an interesting and quaint little town with some wonderful shops and restaurants. We then went back to St. Thomas where we refueled the boat at an absolutely gorgeous marina. The marina’s name is Crown Bay Marina, and it is truly a world class facility. We then took the boat over to the charter base and ate dinner at a local restaurant named Bella Bleu. I have eaten there a number of times and have never been disappointed, and usually quite impressed, with the food. They have a wine cellar for those that like special wines. Every time I go to the Virgin Islands I have more fun that the last. I highly recommend that experience for everyone. If you want to do a lot of sailing the rental of a mono-hall is probably to be preferred over a catamaran. Power catamarans and power boats are also available.

We are currently discussing the possibility of taking another trip with a group from the Yacht Club in March of 2012. We think we are potentially close to having three couples to go on a mono-hall ( a 50 foot Juneau) and relatively close to fi lling a four stateroom catamaran. The cost for a trip of this sort is approximately $2,300.00 for the boat per couple, $1,000.00 for food, liquor, and incidentals. Our air fare was relatively reasonable. The direct fl ight from Chicago to St. Thomas is the way to go.

If anybody is interested in talking about the March 2012 trip, please let me know. The requirements for going on a trip are few. You must have the money to go, you must have a ready and willing smile and happy attitude, and be a non-smoker. Rick Scott
