Supranationalism !?!?!?

??

Supranationalism•A form of international cooperation in

which countries give up some control of their affairs as they work together to achieve shared goals

Supranational Organizations• NATO- North Atlantic

Treaty Organization▫ A focus on defense of

member states rather than unity

• UNASUR- Union of South American Nations▫ Combines  two

existing customs unions – Mercosur and the Andean Community of Nations

•EU- European Union•An experiment to form the United States of Europe

(Not all excited about idea)

•UN- United Nations

•Worlds largest organization (193), must put world interests above own (difficult to do)

Benefits & Challenges

Take a few minutes to record some of the benefits and challenges of supranationalism.

Processes that Effect Power to Control Territory

 •  Ability to control

territory is dependent on access to resources (and moving them)

• Examples: energy sources, human capital, labor, development, technology and favorable geography.

Oil exports are virtually the only source of foreign revenue for landlocked South Sudan.

Processes that Effect Power to Control Territory

• Favorable geography = easy movement of products and people. (not so easy for South Sudan)

• Conflict/war results around the arising need for access to resources.

• Ethnic and cultural differences may be manipulated to gain support for conflict/war.

Despite denials, both governments have aided insurgents on neighboring soil.
