FIVE ARTISTS | SEVEN DAYS

14 October – 8 November | Yellow House: 59 Macleay St, Potts Point Euan Macleod | Watters Gallery Angus Nivison | Utopia Art Sydney Charmaine Pike | Defiance Gallery Dave Teer | Defiance Gallery Jason Capobianco | Title Artist Management

Following the extraordinary success of the inaugural AWC exhibition in 2013, which raised over $200,000 for the work of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, this year a second exhibition will celebrate the Pungalina-Seven Emu Sanctuary in the Gulf of Carpentaria. This important area, traversing the Calvert River and 55km of the coastal plains of the Gulf of Carpentaria, protects nearly 50 mammal species, over 200 bird species and over 100 reptiles.

In August of 2014, the AWC, in conjunction with Lea and Bill Ferris and Defiance Gallery, organised for five leading Australian artists - painters Euan Macleod, Angus Nivison and Charmaine Pike and sculptor Dave Teer alongside photographer Jason Capobianco and writer John McDonald, to travel to Pungalina. The artists spent a week exploring the 307,224 hectares of protected wilderness working closely with scientists from the AWC Research Centre. AWC is a registered NFP organisation whose mission is the effective conservation of all Australian animals and their habitats. AWC manages 23 sanctuaries covering over three million hectares across Australia, with 80% of their staff working on the ground to implement conservation programs such as fire management and carry out strategic scientific research to help turn back the tide of extinction. This year’s AWC exhibition will take place in the Yellow House in Potts Point to raise money for the AWC,

with each artist who undertook the trip donating a work developed from their experiences, the proceeds of which will go, in full, to the charity. In addition to this 6-8 smaller works from the trip will be for commercial sale courtesy of Watters Gallery, Utopia Art Sydney and Defiance Gallery. The exhibition will also become the venue for a program of talks by scientists to discuss the Gulf of Carpentaria and the work of the AWC, as well as artists’ talks about their experiences at the Pungalina-Seven Emu Sanctuary. Alongside this, acclaimed photographer, Jason Capobianco is producing a documentary, bringing together footage of the expedition and studio interviews with each of the artists by John McDonald, art critic for the Sydney Morning Herald. The exhibition is a celebration of the Australian landscape and of our continued attempts to see our land from the perspectives of both the artists and the scientist.

PEARLS CHARITY AUCTION

The Annual PEARLS Charity Auction is scheduled for October 17 this year. Several artists including Elisabeth Cummings, Peter Godwin, Tim Allen, Dave Teer, Daniel Kyle, Charmaine Pike, Luke Sciberras, Alison Mackay and Richard Morecroft have already generously donated works to this year’s auction, which will take place at The Art Gallery of NSW.

The 2014 auction was the most successful in the organisation’s history, with a staggering $85,000 raised. The PEARLS auction raises money for vital research into the cause and the early detection of Preeclampsia, which affects 1 in 10 women in pregnancy. The PEARLS research team, under the auspices of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Campbelltown Hospital are the world leaders in their field, working towards a system of early detection through screening.

ARTIST PROFILE ISSUE 32

Issue 32 of Artist Profile magazine is now of the shelves of all good newsagents and we couldn’t be prouder of Defiance artists Dan Kyle, who has been interviewed by Owen Craven, and Peter Godwin, who features on the cover, with a fantastic article by John McDonald.

Peter and Dan both have upcoming exhibitions at Defiance Gallery, with Peter showing his new body of large scale carborundum reliefs Mountains / Clouds at the Yellow House (Sept 16-Oct 4). Developed in the UK with master printmaker Andrew Smith (famous for his work with William Kentridge , Howard Hodgkin and Richard Long), these arresting works are a continuation of Peter’s recent series of calligraphic landscapes.

Dan Kyle will also be having his very first solo show of superb recent landscape painting at Defiance Gallery between Oct 28 – Nov 20.
