Building an Excellent System by Building Systems of Excellence
Deer Valley Middle SchoolBoard Presentation

PDSA in our classrooms
•Students developed mission statements
•Set their goals
•Chart their progress
•Are involved in the learning process
•Perform a PDSA on their progress and learning
To ensure success for every child four pertinent questions must be asked:
1. What is it we want all students to learn?
2. How will we know if they have learned it?
3. How will we respond when they don’t?
4. How will we respond when they already
know it? Learn By Doing
Students are engaged in a systems approach to learning: Strategic approach – the what
•Set and communicate direction for student learning
•Clarify and communicate the learning requirements•Publish and post class learning goal•Chart an analyze learning results for class•Write class mission statement
Students are engaged in a systems approach to learning: Operational approach – the how
•Engage students in a regular and frequent evaluation and improvement of learning process
•Plan – frequent short cycles of learning target•Do - Determine what every teacher and student needs to do to ensure that everyone learns the target
•Study – The results of strategies used in the learning cycle•Act – Plan and make adjustments for the next cycle of learning
Continuous Improvement Cycle (PDSA)
PLANIdentify improvement
opportunity, collect baseline data and plan the change
DOImplement the change
and collect data
STUDYAnalyze the results
ACTAdopt the change or abandon the change

Do it all again!
1. Share test or finished product results.2. Determine how many students have
demonstrated mastery of all critical content. Post these data – by number of, not name!
3. Use a + to evaluate all learning opportunities.
4. Develop a plan for dealing with the ’s in the next learning cycle. Post the plan. Do the plan.
5. Study what happened.
6. Make improvements based on what was learned.

Explanation of the Study and Act
Examples of personal goal setting and PDSA
Example of weekly PDSA for every student
(Example of Act)What will you do with what you’ve learned?
• If you saw improvement, keep what’s working.
• If no improvement, create a new plan.
This part can become your DO for the next cycle.Act
We studied our results for: _____________
__ We improved.___ We did not improve.
Next week students will do the following things differently:
Next week the teacher will do the following things differently:
Once they have mastered the process, Goal Setting and
PDSA can also be used individually by students to
achieve even greater success.

Everyone Every Way Every Day
PDSA looks different in every class, but
EVERY class is teachingstudents how to be in CONTROL of their own
LEARNING.
