    EXERCISE ONE

    THE PRACTICE OF NON-JUDGMENT

There is a prayer in A Course in Miracles that states: .Today I shall judge

nothing that occurs. Non-judgment creates silence in your mind. It is a

good idea, therefore, to begin your day with that statement. And throughout

the day, remind yourself of that statement each time you catch yourself

    judging.

    Deepak Chopra

A Course In Miracles was first published in 1975 by the Foundation for

Inner Peace. I first hear about it around ten years ago and a few years later I

practiced its exercises with a group for a few months. I have always seen it

as a practical method for recognizing Maya and escaping from the veil of

Illusion. Its central message can be summarized in two words: Be Still.

And its basic principle is: Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unrealexists. This is where the peace of God lays.

    On January 1, 2008, Oprah Winfrey opened a year-long course on A

Course in Miracles on her daily radio show, offering a lesson a dayuntil

covering the 365 lessons from theCourse in Miracles Workbook.

In charge of the Oprah radio shows daily lesson was the bestselling authorand internationally recognized expert in A Course in Miracles, Marianne

Williamson, who states that spiritual transformation begins with shifting

your physical perceptions of what's real. If you think what you see and hear

is all that's real, you'll be dictated by the limits of your senses. Extend your

perception beyond what your senses registerto whatyour heart knows to

be true. Be willing to have your eyes opened to the love in any situation,

even when with your physical eyes you cannot see it. That is the miracle

    beginning.

The following exercise, based onA Course in Miracles, will only take you

    a minute or so.

PART ONE: THE MEANING OF THINGS

The first part of this exercise is based on the fact that if you are

indeed experiencing a dream created by your own mind, then

you necessarily must have given everything that surrounds you,

including your own self, all the meaning that it has for you.

    STEP I:

Start out by reading the following statement:

I have given everything I see in this room (on this street, from

this window, in this place) all the meaning that it has for me.

    STEP 2:

Slowly look around you and watch the objects you see.

If you are in a room, look at the furniture, the walls, the lamps,

etc. Scan the place for a minute or so and as you do so, say to

    yourself:

All these objects dont really mean anything because my

imagination has given them their meanings.

    STEP 3:

    3/6

Now sit or stand back and slowly scan the place. saying the

following and adapting it to the specific different objects that

    you see around you:

This computer doesnt really mean anything.

This table doesnt really mean anything.

This chair doesnt really mean anything.

And everything this room doesnt really mean anything

either because my imagination has given them their

    meanings.

Begin with the things that are near you, and apply the idea to

whatever your glance rests on. Then increase the range outward.

Turn your head so that you include whatever is on either side. If

possible, turn around and apply the idea to what was behind you.

Remain as indiscriminate as possible in selecting subjects for its

application, do not concentrate on anything in particular, and do

not attempt to include everything you see in a given area, or you

    will introduce strain.

Merely glance easily and fairly quickly around you, trying to

avoid selection by size, brightness, color, material, or relativeimportance to you.

Take the subjects simply as you see them. Try to apply the

exercise with equal ease to a body or a button, a fly or a floor, an

arm or an apple. The sole criterion for applying the idea to

anything is merely that your eyes have lighted on it. Make no

attempt to include anything particular, but be sure that nothing is

    specifically excluded.

    STEP 4:

Now glance farther away from your immediate area, look out the

window if you can and apply the same basic idea to a wider

    range:

This street does not mean anything.

This city and this country do not mean anything.

And not even this world and everything within it means

anything because my imagination has given them their

    meanings.

You can adapt these statements to your particular reality if

you like, as the Course in Miracle Workbookrecommends:

Notice that these statements are not arranged in any

order, and make no allowance for differences in the kinds

of things to which they are applied. That is the purpose of

the exercise. The statement should merely be applied to

anything you see. As you practice the idea for the day, use

it totally indiscriminately. Do not attempt to apply it to

everything you see, for these exercises should not become

ritualistic. Only be sure that nothing you see is

specifically excluded. One thing is like another as far as

the application of the idea is concerned.

    WARNING:

    5/6

The Course In Miracle Workbook warns that this exercise

should not be attempted for more than a minute or so. Also that

it should not be done more than twice a day, preferably in the

morning and in the evening. unless that entails a sense of hurry.

A comfortable sense of leisure is essential.

PART TWO: THE PRACTICE OF NON-JUDGMENT

The second part of this exercise is based on the fact that if you

are indeed experiencing a dream and have given everything all

the meaning that it has for you then why judge things?

Begin by reading Deepak Chopras comments regarding the

mental turbulence created by our constant judgments and then

follow the basic steps of what he calls the Practice of Non-

    Judgment:

    ON MENTAL JUDGMENT:

    * Judgment is the constant evaluation of things as right or wrong, good or

    bad.

*When you are constantly evaluati ng, classifying, labeling, analyzing,

you create a lot of turbulence in your in ternal dialogue.

This turbulence constricts the flow of energy between you and the fi eld

of pure potentiali ty (real reali ty)...

    * I t is that state of pur e awareness, that sil ent space between thoughts,

that inner stillness that connects you to true power

    * There is a prayer in A Course in M ir acles that states: Today I shall

judge nothing that occur s. Non-judgment creates si lence in your mind.

I t is a good idea, therefore, to begin your day with that statement.

    * Throughout the day, remind yourself of that statement each time you

    catch yourself judging.

    * I f practicing this procedure for the whole day seems too dif fi cult, then

you may simply say to yourself: For the next two hours, I won t judge

anythingor For the next hour (half an hour , ten, f ive or even one

minute) I wil l experience non-j udgment. Then you can extend it

    gradually.
