From the Director’s Desk

- Frédérique Terzan

Dear Readers,

The past two months have been an exciting start to the new year for Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad, thanks to your enthusiastic participation and your love for all things French!

The excitement reached a wondrous peak this January when the President of France, Mr. François Hollande visited India and witnessed the 67th Republic Day celebrations. His visit culminated with a strenghtening of bonds between the two nations. Among the sixteen pacts signed between India & France, there are three MoUs under the Smart City program, and an agreement between the Airbus Group and Mahindra for manufacturing helicopters. The MoUs cover a wide range of sectors like urban development, urban transport, water and waste treatment and solar energy.

This bond of India & France continues to reflect in the festive months of March & April. While March is adorned with the colourful festival of Holi, April witnesses the equally joyous Easter celebration, known as Pâques in French.

Early this March, Alliance will conduct the first DELF/DALF exam session of this year. I wish our students ‘Bonne chance pour les examens!’

Join us in celebrating the International Francophonie week from 12 to 20 March, and participate in the plethora of activities in the classroom, and in the library. This year’s theme is ‘Words contributed to the French language by Francophone regions’. Having spent a wonderful time in French Polynesia, I will shed light on the word ‘Taboo’, a word of Polynesian origin which means ‘Reserved’. A Polynesian farmer divides his land into three portions, of which he cultivates only two and leaves the third one as Taboo, i.e. reserved for later.

Following the colorful precedent set by Holi, on 28 & 29 March I invite you to explore the vibrant crochet work of Sarkhej Roza’s underpriviledged women & girls.

Come April, we offer a treat to your olfactory & visual senses with a Fragrance making workshop and a Make-up workshop. Register soon as places are limited!

While we are on the topic of treating your senses, why leave out sound & taste? Join us on 10 March in the Rendez-vous evening to play some African drums - Djem-bé, and a workshop on preparing the French délicacy called Bugnes.

I will sign off by revealing a surprise for the month of May: There will be a musical start to the month with two concerts: the Gypsy Jazz, Beltuner & the Trans-Improvised, Piloot. More on that in the next Découvrir. Meanwhile, leaf through our Découvrir & discover what’s coming up next at your very own Alliance Française.

See you soon among us!

International Francophonie WeekThe International Francophonie Week is a worldwide celebration taking place around March 20, every year. This event was created in 1998 as a way for the 70 states and governments of the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF) to celebrate their common bond – the french language – along with their diversity. This day, devoted to the french language, unites 220 million speakers in the world and brings together 870 million Francophones.

Each year, the organization proposes 10 French words, based on a central theme. This proposal is called “Dis-moi dix mots” (Tell me ten words). This year, La Semaine de la Langue Française et de la Francophonie, has proposed the theme : Words gifted to the French language by the Francophone Regions.

We at Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad propose to you a plethora of activities during the Francophonie week this year, from 14 March 2016 to 20 March 2016. Hence, keep an eye out for the following ten words, in your French class & in the French library!

Rendezvous Evening

French Cuisine WorkshopBugnes, or Angel wings are a traditional sweet crisp pastry made out of dough that are shaped into thin twisted ribbons, deep-fried and sprinkled with powdered sugar. In France the fried pastry are made in central-eastern France, including Lyon and Saint Étienne, and are closely related to beignets. French bugnes varieties include crunchy bugnes and soft bugnes. The crunchy variety, known as “bugnes lyonnaises” (“Lyon bugnes”), are cooked in very hot oil with the dough spread out thinly and knotted once or twice. The soft variety, sometimes known as “pillows”, are made with a thicker dough, which is rarely knotted.

Join us for an evening of culinary delight, and learn how to make these savory delicacies. Better yet, you get to feast on them too!

YOU NEED TO REGISTER FOR BOTH THESE EVENTS AT ONCE

The word rhythm in Greek means to flow. Drumming is a path of healing that guides us into experiencing the flow of our mind and emotions so we may grow to experience more of our soul . This April, Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad, in association with The Drum Circle, propose an evening dedicated to connecting with one another, and with oneself ‘The Rendezvous Evening’. A Drum-Circle is a group drumming activity headed by a drum circle facilitator. One does not require any prior drumming or music knowledge to be a part of a drum - circle.

The ExperienceDrumming in a group is a fun, creative and rewarding ‘social experience’ - a chance to bond with others. It is an amazing way to celebrate and beat-the-stress-off. Every participant is given a drum (Djémbé) and the activity is facilitated by Mr. Rujul Vora, Founder of The Drum Circle.

The IntentionThe outcome or intention of this is to get everyone together in a sync. It is a way of community building, starting/ending any gathering/celebration memorable and rhythmic way.

How do you participate?Register at the reception of Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad, or send an email to Ms. Bansari Thakkar at [email protected].

EMPOWERING WOMEN & GIRLS FROM UNDERPRIVILEDGED

BACKGROUNDS

ABOUT SARKHEJ ROZA CRAFTSThe Sarkhej Roza Crafts and Womens’ Collective is an effort to create livelihoods for the people living around the monument of Sarkhej Roza with a focus of connecting

their lives to the monument. The Women’s Collective is an outcome of fifteen years of conservation and promotion of the site itself by ACF. The approach to all the promotion and conservation was done, keeping people at the centre. The people settled around the Roza are mainly a migrant population uprooted from their native spaces in various times of political

and economic distress. The Sarkhej Roza Crafts and Womens’ Collective consists of women and girls from underprivileged backgrounds and belong to the Muslim community.

The monument of Sarkhej Roza is a 15th century Tomb shrine of the Sufi Saint Shaikh Ahmad Khattu, popularly known as ‘Ganj Baksh’ for his generosity. It is one of the oldest monuments in the city of Ahmedabad. The design motifs found in this complex are a beautiful example of India’s syncretic culture. The architectural style of the Sarkhej Roza is a precursor to the Mughal period in a true amalgamation of Hindu, Jain and Islamic design vocabularies.

Sarkhej Roza Crafts and Womens’ Collective is facilitated by the Ahmadabad Community Foundation (www.acfindia.org). Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad is pleased to collaborate with Sarkhej Roza Crafts for this exhibition.

Jazz Manouche: Beltuner

Beltuner is a popular French band created in Paris in 2001, the original band was composed of Johann Riche (accordion), Pascal Muller (guitar), Arnaud Soidet (guitare) and Nicolas Pautras (double-bass). The four young musicians, essentially self-taught, first played a repertoire of traditional tunes from the gypsy swing “manouche”, parisian bal musette, tango, but also yiddish or balkanic musics.

Soon a special alchemy took place and the band started to get its very own way of playing, mixing the styles, bringing numerous new influences (jazz, world music, classical, pop, funk, etc), replacing traditional tunes by original compositions, and creating a very personnal sound based on impressive energy, expressivity and complicity combinated to a very free and instinctive playing. Beltuner especially got famous by this highly generous and communicatives concerts, where the musicians give in freely to their energy, sensivity and pleasure that always gain the audience, sometimes up to some kind of trance and concerts frequently finish in dancing party!

Catch this energetic Gypsy Jazz band LIVE in Ahmedabad soon!

Trans Improvization: PilootAbout PILOOT

PILOOT is a trio of «Trans-Improvised» which is composed of the flutist Florian Guibert, the double bassist Cyrille de Haes and the drummer Jean-Philippe De Gheest Influenced by complementary musical influences (jazz, rock, world and electronic music) the 3 accomplished musicians let go of all musical apprehensions while playing and surrender to the joys of spontaneous composition.

PILOOT MEETS INDIA2 CULTURES - 1 CONFLUENCE

The influences of the three musicians, their experiences in various fields and their enthusiasm for cultural exchange encourages P I L O O T to develop this project of touring in India in the spring of 2016.

PILOOT MEETS INDIA is a project of artistic exchange which includes various disciplines - for example: classical danse, puppetry, painting - who are invited to blend with the music of PILOOT. While passing through a city, the three musicians invite a specific local artist to come and develop a unique «trans-cultural» performance. Taking as a base the novelty of new meetings and the immediate result, the performances will be built around spontaneous composition and improvisation; a concept familiar to both cultures. As each performance would be as intense as it would be transient PILOOT MEETS INDIA will reveal the magic of the «unexpected» et will explore during this tour to promote dialogue and exchange between the Indian and European cultures.

Soon, you can hear them LIVE in Ahmedabad!

Messages from our students« J’ai commencé à apprendre la langue française à l’Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad il y a six ans. »

“I started learning French at AF six years ago, but took a break; I started learning again in 2015 because I love this language. I believe that AF is the best institute to learn French as the professors teach us in French itself. This helps greatly in learning the language.”

“Alliance means a union. And Alliance Française is a union of two nations. I hail from Rajashtan, and I have come far from home to study a new language. I am glad I chose Alliance Française, as the methodology of teaching here is really simple and effective. Professors are very kind to students. The best part about AF is its library. One can sit here the entire day and learn French.

What’s more, I get to discover a lot about French culture as well by watching the French TV channel TV5 Monde in the médiathèque.”

“I started learning French just for fun, however, now I am really excited about it and absorbed in this wonderful place - Alliance Française. It is like discovering a new soul within. Merci!”
