Sentinus in partnership with NIE delivered an exciting STEM workshop on Tuesday 22nd January 2013. The STEM workshop was targeted at Year 10 students and was designed to give the pu-pils an insight into career op-portunities in Engineering. The timing of these work-shops will allow Year 10 stu-dents to make more in-formed decisions regarding subject choices at GCSE. NIE is a major employer of engi-neers and the event proved most informative and benefi-cial to our students. They particularly enjoyed making fully operational generators!!

New-Bridge Integrated College U15 Team played their Semi Final match in the South

Down League against Dromore High School in Cheney Park, in horrendous condi-

tions, on the afternoon of Tuesday 29th January 2013. While the weather played a

huge part in the game, New-Bridge were able to get the ball on the ground making a

series of passes to score 2 excellent goals. Well done lads!

Pay It Forward at New-Bridge! Sixth Form Students Kristiane Cooke and Rebekah Gilpin co-ordinated the very successful ‘ Fall Fete’ held in the College recently. The initial aim of the ‘Fall Fete was to raise money for charities and school funds but as the evening progressed it was evident that it achieved so much more. Staff and their children together with the students enjoyed an evening of fun and games and chat with the local community. Over £500 was raised and rep-resentatives from the nominated charities Buddy Bear trust and the Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke foundation visited the College on Mon-day 17th December 2012 to receive their cheques.

The Buddy Bear trust is a school in Dungannon with specifically designed education programmes essential for children suffering from cerebral palsy and other motor dis-orders. The charity is especially personal to New-Bridge as Sixth Form student Tammy Reid’s cousin Jack is a pupil at the school. Jack visited the College with his parents and the Patron of the Charity Mr Brendan McConville to be presented with a cheque for £200. Mr Doyle, our Network Manager, who is an avid fund raiser himself, received a cheque for £200 on behalf of the Chest, Heart and Stroke Foundation. Well done to all the students who contributed in some way towards this fund raising event.

New-Bridge Eco Club new members received their club badges at the first meeting and created a display for visitors on Open Day. They also received a visit from Miss Aishling Higgins a member of RSPB to inform students about the “BIG SCHOOLS’ BIRDWATCH” challenge. Club members were given guidance on how to observe and record a variety of birds around the school site and in their local area. A large variety of birds were observed by club members to include Robins, Starlings, Wrens, Rooks, Black-birds, House Sparrows, Blackbirds, Magpies and Wood pigeons. Information can be found at www.rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch and www.naturedetectives.org.uk/adventure. The Eco Club are look-ing forward to planning their new spring activities around the school site and supporting the Woodland Trust to improve biodiversity.

Eco Club meet ‘at least once a week on a Friday

at break in 1MV’.

New members welcome!

Year 12 Home Economics Students Receive Certificates In Healthier Food and Special Diets

Year 12 pupils studying GCSE Home Economics have recently obtained the Level 2 Award In Healthier Food and Special Diets from the Char-tered Institute Of Environmental Health. The benefits of a healthy and varied diet are indis-putable. This qualification has been designed to provide a good, basic understanding of nutrition. All employees in catering environments are in-volved in the selection of menus, recipes and in-gredients. It is also relevant for those in the health care and education sectors. Finally the Award helps pupils to understand the link be-tween diet and health

In GCSE Home Economics Child Development at New- Bridge Integrated College the pupils have the opportunity to take the Virtual Baby home for a night. It helps the pupils to under-stand that parenthood, is busy. Caring for the Virtual Baby enables them to experience a real life event of juggling parenthood with a social life and homework. The pupils are keen to take the Virtual Baby home for a night. One pupil said “Looking after the Virtual Baby was bene-ficial to me ,as it taught me just how difficult it to care for a baby and how much commitment is required on a daily basis. It was a good ex-perience for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it” Another pupil said” Taking the baby home was a good experience however it was a demand-ing night but I enjoyed it”

Recommended read for January I was really puzzled about what to recommend this month, maybe

a pick-me-up book to while away the January blues. But after

looking through the new books we received in November, I stum-

bled across the book Border Crossing by Pat Barker. I thought it

was another book about ‘The Troubles’ but instead found a very

cleverly written book for teenagers. It is about a child psychologist

who saves someone from drowning in a river. After the rescue, it

becomes apparent that the two men had met before when Danny,

the person drowning, was imprisoned for killing an old woman

based on evidence from Tom, his rescuer. It is a gripping book,

filled with moral challenges for the reader. So I’m sorry for not

giving you a mug of hot chocolate in book form, but a cool slushy

which you will still enjoy, despite how cold it gets outside!

Amy Jordan, a Year 8 student at New-Bridge Integrated College, Loughbrickland joins 120 young musicians from both sides of the border to take part in a national tour as the internationally acclaimed Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland led by Ireland’s premier conductor Maestro Gear-oid Grant. The CBOI, established in 1995 as a peace initiative, has de-veloped ‘Peace Proms’ over the past 18 years, the ultimate vision being to create a cross culture and cross community link between Catholic and Protestant school children throughout Ireland and to educate children about commit-ment, tolerance and friendship through the medium of music. It is recognised as one of Ireland’s most important education initiatives providing outstanding cultural oppor-tunities for young people while promoting peace, unity and tolerance. A vision understood and shared by New-Bridge Integrated College.

The musical programme which highlights pop, folk and traditional cultures of the Island of Ireland uses all the instruments of a full symphony orchestra and includes the Lambeg Drums, Uilleann Pipes and High-land Pipes. This year to help them showcase their combined cultural talents and work together towards a better future for all the CBOI will be joined on their national tour by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Associa-tion Northern Ireland Branch which now has far and away the largest membership of any branch of the Association and is, in its own right, one of the largest pipe band organisations in the world. Amy is looking forward, in particular, to the final two performances of the tour which take place in the

Waterfront, Belfast on Sunday 3rd March at 2pm and 7pm respectively, tickets priced at £10. Here the

CBOI will be joined on stage with a 700 strong choir of schoolchildren from all over the North of Ireland

and Co. Louth and Amy’s family, friends and teachers will be able to enjoy for themselves the fruits of

Amy’s hard work! We are very proud of Amy and wish her good luck!
