    Plotter Support

Quick PrintOn Windows, the quick print option relies on the standard Windows File/Print mechanism. As long as the printer has a properly installed Windows printer driver that conforms to the printing mechanism of Windows, DecisionSpace® Suite software should support it. Significant testing was performed on Dell, Xerox, and HP small-format devices as well as the wide-format HP T1100 and 4000 Designjets. If you are experiencing missing data using the Quick Print option to wide-format HP devices, try disabling the “Send job as bitmap” option of the driver.

On Linux, the quick print option relies on the Linux LP queue configured on the operating system. PostScript data is sent to the LP queue. Therefore, only PostScript-enabled devices are supported when using the Quick Print option on Linux.

ZEH ServerIf submitting to a ZEH plot server, those printers supported by the ZEH Plotting Solutions software are supported. ZEH supports the following plotter makes:

    • Calcomp• Canon• EPSON• HP (PCL, RTL)• iSys• NeuraLog• Océ• OYO• PostScript printers• Versatec• Xerox

It is recommended that you use ZEH rasterizer 3.5.70 or above.

Other Plot ServersIf you are submitting to a third-party print server, consult its documentation for a list of supported plotters.

For SDI rasterizers, it is recommended that you use version R12.0 or higher.

    *Memory Considerations

While the application can run on a system with as little as 8 Gb of RAM, the required memory configuration for optimal performance is dependent on both data set size and customer workflow. Even with small memory sizes, the system will handle a large amount of named data added to the session. Also, the number of other applications running and their memory requirements are important to include when considering the needs of the overall workflow.

Shared memory for seismic data is frequently the single largest contributor to memory usage. For most workflows, when shared memory is used, the aggregate size of shared memory volumes should be considerably less than available system RAM. This allows space for interpreted data objects and other system activity. It is important to balance memory use among shared memory usage and the requirements of other applications, including DecisionSpace® Suite software.

General guidelines for DecisionSpace® Suite geophysical workflow session sizes are as follows:

    • 24 Gb – Up to 15 Gb of shared memory seismic data, 50 horizons, 2500 faults and

  • DecisionSpace® Suite Version 5000.8.3.0 Installation Guide

    5000.8.3.0 Installation Guide Page 12 of 65 August 2013

DSDESKTOP_MEMORY is set to a value greater than 32000 MB, the issue could occur more frequently.

Finally, while memory utilization is an important factor, system performance is also affected by the number of objects displayed. While the system may perform well with the above quantities of data objects loaded into a session; the number of objects that can be displayed performantly will be a function of several factors, including the specific graphics card installed. Efficiently controlling data visibility is important for memory usage and overall system performance.

    Graphic Cards

    NVIDIA Graphic Cards

It is recommended that DecisionSpace® Suite software requiring high-end graphics support be run only on NVIDIA Kepler K5000, K4000, NVIDIA Quadro (Fermi Series) and NVIDIA Quadro FX high-end, ultra high-end, and QuadroPlex graphics cards..

    Windows 7 64-bit driver recommendation:Tested with NVIDIA 311.35

Linux 64-bit driver recommendation (see note below)RHEL 5.x tested with NVIDIA 310.32------------------------------Limited testing on the NVIDIA K6000 (Kepler Series) graphics card was done for this release, and these cards are considered provisionally qualified for use with DecisionSpace® Suite software. Complete testing is planned for the next major release of DecisionSpace® Suite software. Testing was done on Windows with beta (unreleased) drivers. Formal testing will be done when production graphics drivers are released.-------------------------------Hillshaded displays of horizons and grids in Map views are not supported on cards that are not OpenGL 3.0 capable. The QuadroFX 3500, 4500, and 5500, and older cards are not OpenGL 3.0 capable. The newer QuadroFX cards (such as 4600 and 5600, and later), and the Quadro, Fermi and Kepler series of cards are OpenGL 3.0 capable.

The performance of datasets with many components (large pointsets, or horizons) may be improved by use of the NVIDIA driver setting “Workstation App – Dynamic Streaming”. To enable this setting, open the NVIDIA Control panel and select: Manage 3D Settings -> Global Presets -> Workstation app - Dynamic streaming. Please note: the “Workstation App – Dynamic Streaming” setting is not compatible with 3D stereoscopic displays. Stereoscopic Display Options

    Introduction

DecisionSpace® Suite software supports 3D stereoscopic displays with the release of DecisionSpace® 5000.8.3. Stereoscopic 3D displays provide additional visual depth cues, providing the viewer with improved understanding of complex spatial relationships.

    Hardware for Stereoscopic Display

DecisionSpace® Suite software utilizes the NVIDIA Quad Buffered OpenGL Stereo feature and has been tested with NVIDIA 3D VisionPro hardware. NVIDIA® Quadro® professional graphics boards support many stereo display solutions and Quad Buffered OpenGl applications, including NVIDIA 3D Vision glasses and displays.

Note that stereoscopic displays are supported only in a local workstation environment. They are not supported in conferencing and remote graphics configurations.

To use the stereoscopic display features, the system configuration must include:

    • A 3D-capable NVIDIA GPU supported by DecisionSpace® Suite software

More information on 3D-capable NVIDIA graphics cards can be found on the NVIDIA website. In addition, see System Requirements on page 9.

    • A ‘3D Vision-ready’ display or projector

Active stereoscopic displays are compatible with CRT-based desktop monitors, high-refresh rate LCD monitors, and with certain types of projection equipment. More information on 3D Vision-ready displays can be found on the NVIDIA website.

Note: NVIDIA Quadro Graphics Boards and 3D Vision Pro support a wide range of stereoscopic projectors and display devices that are not “3D-Vision Ready” as well. When you work with most projectors, you must have a VESA-compliant stereo sync signal for proper operation.

    • 3D glasses compatible with the display or projector

For more information, see the NVIDIA website.

    Configuring Linux for Stereoscopic Displays

The "Stereo" option in the Device section of the xorg.conf file is used to enable the offering of Quad Buffered OpenGL Stereo visuals on NVIDIA graphics cards that support stereoscopic displays.

More information on configuring the xorg.conf file can be found in the RedHat Deployment Documentation on the RedHat web site.

For information on the allowable stereo settings, see the "Stereo" X configuration documentation in Appendix B of the NVIDIA Accelerated Linux Graphics Driver README and Installation Guide for complete information and specific options (/usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README.txt).

The value assigned to the "Stereo" option indicates the type of stereoscopic hardware being used. Stereo options 3, 10, 11, and 12 are known as "active" stereo.

Here is an example of the xorg.conf option line for the onboard stereo support mode:

    Option “Stereo” “3”

    TwinView

Stereo options may be used with TwinView if all modes within each MetaMode have identical timing values. When active stereo is used with multiple display devices, it is recommended that modes within each MetaMode have identical timing values (modelines). See Chapter 19, Programming Modes in the NVIDIA Accelerated Linux Graphics Driver README and Installation Guide for suggestions on making sure the modes within your MetaModes are identical.

3 Onboard stereo support. This is usually only found on professional cards. The glasses or synchronization emitter connect svia a DIN connector on the back of the graphics card.

10 NVIDIA 3D Vision mode for use with NVIDIA 3D Vision glasses. The NVIDIA 3D Vision infrared emitter must be connected to a USB port of your computer, and to the 3-pin DIN connector of a Quadro graphics board (based on G8xGL or higher GPU) before starting the X server. Hot-plugging the USB infrared stereo emitter is not yet supported. Also, 3D Vision Stereo Linux support requires a Linux kernel built with USB device filesystem (usbfs) and USB 2.0 support

11 NVIDIA 3D VisionPro mode for use with NVIDIA 3D VisionPro glasses. The NVIDIA 3D VisionPro RF hub must be connected to a USB port of your computer, and to the 3-pin DIN connector of a Quadro graphics board (based on G8xGL or higher GPU) before starting the X server. Hot-plugging the USB RF hub is not yet supported. Also, 3D VisionPro Stereo Linux support requires a Linux kernel built with USB device filesystem (usbfs) and USB 2.0 support. When RF hub is connected and X is started in NVIDIA 3D VisionPro stereo mode, a new page will be available in nvidia-settings for various configuration settings. Some of these settings can also be made via nvidia-settings command line interface. Refer to the corresponding Help section in nvidia-settings for further details.

12 HDMI 3D mode for use with HDMI 3D compatible display devices with their own stereo emitters. This mode is only available on NVIDIA Kepler and later GPUs.

    Other Issues

    Unified Back Buffer (UBB)

UBB must be enabled when stereo is enabled. (This behavior is the default.)

    The X.Org Composite Extension

X.Org X servers, beginning with X11R6.8.0, provide experimental support for a new X protocol extension called Composite. This extension allows windows to be drawn into pixmaps instead of directly onto the screen. This extension is incompatible with stereo and must be disabled if stereoscopic rendering is desired.

Here is an example of the xorg.conf entry to disable the Composite option:

    Section "Extensions"

    Option "Composite" "Disable"

    EndSection

    Configuring Windows for Stereoscopic Displays

Open the NVIDIA Control Panel and enable the OpenGL stereo display method in the “Manage 3D Settings” tab.

You can access the NVIDIA Control Panel by using clicking the right mouse button (MB3) on the Windows Desktop background and selecting NVIDIA Control Panel in the pop-up menu.

In the NVIDIA Control Panel dialog box, illustrated below, Under Manage3D Settings, select 3D OpenGL Stereo. If you are not using Stereo, the correct setting is Worksation App – Dynamic Streaming.

    Troubleshooting

    Stereo synchronization problems:

Check that the left and right eyes are not reversed. This is often a problem in visualization centers if the stereo-sync is not correctly wired. To determine if this is the problem, put on the stereo glasses upside down, so that the left eye is looking through the right lens (and vice versa). If the image looks markedly more 3D, then the left and right eye images are most likely reversed. This problem can be corrected easily by setting the stereo eye separation to a negative number. The left and right eye images are thus reversed.

    Linux Operating System Configuration

The primary test Linux platform for DecisionSpace® Suite 5000.8.3.0 is RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.8. Limited provisional qualification on RedHat Enterprise Linux 6.4 was also performed.

Install the operating system (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x) and the packages listed in the OpenWorks® Installation Procedures guide. Detailed instructions are provided in that document. Below are a quick reference set of instructions:

    1. Install with or without SELinux set to enabled. If you install with SELinux enabled, you may need to execute a script to change the security context. Please refer to the OpenWorks® Software Installation Procedures guide, and follow the instructions in the section Linux Only: 64-bit Servers.

    2. Select these "major" options:

    • KDE• Legacy Software Development• System Tools• Legacy Software Support

    3. Under Legacy Software Support select the additional options listed below.

    For Version 5.x:

    • openmotif 22-2.2.3-18_x86_64• compat-db-4.2.52-5.1.x86_64• sysstat-7.0.0-3.e15.x86_64• compat-readline43-4.3-3.x86_64• compat-libf2c-34-3.4.6-4.x86_64• sharutils-4.6.1-2.x86_64• ncompress-4.2.4-47.x86_64

    4. Install the NVIDIA driver. Contact customer support for information on obtaining the recommended video driver. See the recommended graphic card note on page 13 for more information. The driver needs to be installed when the OS is in init run level 3 (no graphics) and the user is logged into the console as root.

    # init 3

    # sh .run

On systems with dual monitors, it is also useful to set up the x-config file now. This can be easily done for twin-view configurations using the following command:

    # nvidia-xconfig --twinview

    5. Set the shared memory limits. The value for kernel.shmmax is defined in bytes, while the value for kernel.shmall is defined in blocks. For x86_64 and em64t the default page size is defined as 4KB.

The value of kernel.shmall specifies the amount of shared memory that can be used at one time on a system, expressed in pages. It should be at least (kernel.shmmax / PAGE_SIZE), where PAGE_SIZE is the page size on the machine (4KB on x86_64 and em64t).

For example, for a system with 24 Gb of physical memory, add the following lines to

/etc/sysctl.conf (Note that the settings appropriate to other memory sizes are also included here as comments):

#use for systems with 8.00GB RAM #kernel.shmmax=8589934592#kernel.shmall=2097152#use for systems with 16.00GB RAM #kernel.shmmax=17179869184#kernel.shmall=4194304#use for systems with 24.00GB RAM kernel.shmmax=25769803776

kernel.shmall=6291456#use for systems with 32.00GB RAM #kernel.shmmax=34359738368#kernel.shmall=8388608#use for systems with 48.00GB RAM #kernel.shmmax=51539607552#kernel.shmall=12582912#use for systems with 64.00GB RAM #kernel.shmmax=68719476736#kernel.shmall=16777216#use for systems with 96.00GB RAM #kernel.shmmax=103097215104#kernel.shmall=25165824#use for systems with 128.00GB RAM #kernel.shmmax=137438953471#kernel.shmall=33554432

    6. Set Security Limits. Add the following lines to /etc/security/limits.conf:

##System wide resource limits## control locked-in-memory address space, stack size, address# space limit, resident set size, data size, file size#* soft memlock unlimited* hard memlock unlimited* soft stack unlimited* hard stack unlimited* soft as unlimited* hard as unlimited* soft rss unlimited* hard rss unlimited* soft data unlimited* hard data unlimited* soft fsize unlimited* hard fsize unlimited

    KDE for Version 5.x

It has been determined that users running on KDE may have trouble with applications exiting because of interference from a KDE program called klipper. To disable this program from automatically starting, remove the following:

    rm -f /usr/share/autostart/klipper.desktop

Remove it from the taskbar by clicking the right mouse button (MB3) on the KDE taskbar and then:

    Licensing

Licensing allows controlled use of Landmark applications in network, local, or stand alone environments. When you purchase a Landmark application, you also purchase one or more licenses, which give users the right to use the application. The number of licenses an application has determines the number of users who access the application(s) concurrently. Before running DecisionSpace® Suite software, you must have a valid license environment. This may mean you are accessing or pointing to a valid license server. If you are unsure or need help, see your System Administrator or contact Landmark Customer Support.

If you are a current DecisionSpace® Suite software user and you experience poor performance upon launching the desktop, do the following:

    • Verify you are pointing to a valid license server. This may be verified by checking that your environment variable LM_LICENSE_FILE is pointing to a valid, functioning license server or file.

    • Set the environment variable FLEXLM_NO_CKOUT_INSTALL_LIC to the numeral 1 (that is, FLEXLM_NO_CKOUT_INSTALL_LIC=1).

    • Remove all license file entries in your registry or file system:

    • Windows - Delete all entries in your registry whose key is LM_LICENSE_FILE, LICSRV_LICENSE_FILE, or LGCX_LICENSE_FILE.

    • Linux - Delete all instances of the file: .flexlmrc.

For more information about Landmark licensing, refer to the Landmark Application Manager guide on Landmark Software Manager.

To launch DecisionSpace® Suite software, you must have a DSDBASE license. If you receive a License Failure error message, or if the Session Manager displays a License Failure message, you must close the application.

A failure may mean any of the following has occurred:

    • License server host name is incorrectly specified.

    • License server has stopped.

    • License has expired.

    • DecisionSpace® DSDBASE license has exceeded the number of allowed users.

License features are checked out by the system when functionality is accessed. They are checked back in when the application or feature is closed or released via the Release Licenses dialog box. For example, when you access Earth Modeling, the DSEM license is checked out. This will also display the Earth Modeling task bar tab. However, if you are not licensed for, or do not install Earth Modeling, the Earth Modeling task bar tab will not display.

During this installation, all modules will install. If you do not have a license for the interpretation aspect of a particular module, the modules selected at startup can control the ability to view particular data types. Although viewing data is typically available without a license, there are exceptions to this rule.

Installation InstructionsThe following pre-installation section provides procedures for installing the DecisionSpace® Suite software version 5000.8.3.0 on a Linux or Windows platform.

    Pre-installation Steps

    OpenWorks® 5000.8.3.x

Before you install the DecisionSpace® Suite software on your platform client/server, install the OpenWorks 5000.8.3.x client/server. (See version 5000.8.3.0 of the OpenWorks Software Installation Procedures manual.)

    Fonts on Linux

For release 5000.8.3.0, the font Liberation Sans was chosen as the standard font for the DecisionSpace® Suite software on the Linux platform. If Liberation Sans was not installed on your Linux platform, the software fonts will default to a standard Java font and the font in the application will appear sub-optimal. To remedy this issue, install the Liberation Sans font on your Linux platform. Liberation Sans is available on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation media. You may need to contact your System Administrator.

    Introductory Movies

DecisionSpace® software includes introductory movies. They are located under Help > Movies in the main menu of the software. The movies are designed to quickly familiarize you with basic concepts, components, and workflows. Appendix: Post-Installation NotesThere may be specific items that you need or want to change once DecisionSpace® Suite software has been installed. This section includes information on the following optional changes:

    • Configuring the Customer Support Portal

    • Setting the LGC_LICENSE_REJECT environment variable

    • Respecifying a Directory for DecisionSpace® Suite Software Output

    • Configuring KDE and Gnome for DecisionSpace® Suite Software (Linux)

    • Uninstalling the DecisionSpace® Suite Software

    Configuring the Customer Support Portal

DecisionSpace® Suite software 5000.8.3.0 contains access to a default Customer Support Portal administered by Landmark. However, you can also point to your own Customer Support by doing the following:

Open the HelpMenu.properties file located in the [installation directory] help folder.

Add a valid Url to the ContactCustomerSupport URL property.

    For example:

    Current default code:

    CustomerSupportPortalURL http://css.lgc.com/InfoCenter/index?page=homeContactCustomerSupportURL

    Modified code:

    ContactCustomerSupport http://www.yourcompanynamesupport.com

    Save the HelpMenu.properties file.

You must relaunch DecisionSpace® Suite software to see the change from the Help > Contact Customer Support menu option.

    Setting the LGC_LICENSE_REJECT environment variable

The application will check for valid licenses at session startup and at various other times when working in the session. For example, a feature may be enabled through several different licenses, and the software may move through the list to find an appropriate one. If you know that you do not have a specific license and you are using several different license servers, performance issues may appear. The LGC_LICENSE_REJECT environment variable allows you to specify the

  • DecisionSpace® Suite Version 5000.8.3.0 Installation Guide

    5000.8.3.0 Installation Guide Page 52 of 65 August 2013

licenses that the DecisionSpace® Suite software should not check for, but assume they do not exist. This can avoid a delay when the environment requires checking several different license servers, especially servers that may be remote.

    All platforms

To create the LGC_LICENSE_REJECT variable, do as follows:

    1. Open the .lgclogin file located in your Home directory.

    2. Set the value of the LGC_LICENSE_REJECT environment variable. The string represents the license features that the software should ignore when launching. For example, your environment variable can be as follows:

    setenv LGC_LICENSE_REJECT LicenseFeatureName1

    or

    setenv LGC_LICENSE_REJECT LicenseFeatureName1;LicenseFeatureName2

where Feature is the name of the license feature that the software should ignore when launching. The feature names must be separated by a semicolon. For example, the LGC_LICENSE_REJECT variable can be as follows:

    setenv LGC_LICENSE_REJECT PRECISIONTARGET;TRACPLANNER;DRILLVIEW_KM

Respecifying a Directory for DecisionSpace® Suite Software Output

5000.8.2 Change to LGC_DATA_HOME - Affects currently set environment variable

With 5000.8.2, the environment variable LGC_DATA_HOME has been slightly modified to define a different default path. Previously, the default location for DecisionSpace® log files on specific platforms was:

    • Windows:

    • The default location of DecisionSpace log files was %USERPROFILE%\Landmark\DecisionSpace\logs

    • Linux:

    • The default location of DecisionSpace log files was ${HOME}/run.

If you have been specifying LGC_DATA_HOME and want the files written to the same location as before, then append "/Landmark" to your LGC_DATA_HOME value. See example below.

  • DecisionSpace® Suite Version 5000.8.3.0 Installation Guide

    5000.8.3.0 Installation Guide Page 53 of 65 August 2013

When you run the software, by default, log files are written to a default location for the specific platform:

    • Windows:

    • The default location is %USERPROFILE%\Landmark\DecisionSpace\.

The name of the log file containing runtime messages is “DecisionSpace5000.8.3-N.log”, where N is a number from 0 to 9.

    • Linux:

    • The default location of DecisionSpace runtime files is ${HOME}/run.

The name of the log file containing runtime messages is “DecisionSpace5000.8.3-N.err”, where N is a number from 0 to 9.

You can specify a different location for Landmark applications to use when storing certain files on your local machine by setting the environment variable “LGC_DATA_HOME”. By default, the log files are stored in the user’s home directory. If the “LGC_DATA_HOME” environment variable is set, log files will be stored in the “DecisionSpace/logs” directory under the directory specified by “LGC_DATA_HOME”. Please note that the directory specified by “LGC_DATA_HOME” must already exist when DecisionSpace® Suite software is launched, otherwise a warning message will be displayed and the launch will exit.

To set LGC_DATA_HOME on Linux, type the following at the command prompt, or add this line to your .lgclogin:

    setenv LGC_DATA_HOME /disk1

    where/disk1 is an example location.

In this case, console output is written to the following directory:

    /disk1/DecisionSpace/logs

    To set LGC_DATA_HOME on Windows:

    1. To create the environment variable, go to the Start menu > right mouse click Computer> Properties > Advanced system settings > Environment Variables

    2. In either the User or System Variables table, click the New button. The New System Variable or New User Variable dialog box opens.

  • DecisionSpace® Suite Version 5000.8.3.0 Installation Guide

    3. Type the path to which you want the system to write all runtime files.

Configuring KDE and Gnome for DecisionSpace® Suite Software (Linux)

There are settings available in KDE and Gnome that enhance ease of use.

    • Setting the ALT key

    • Moving windows

    • Assistive Technology

    Setting the ALT key

You can switch back from Edit/Interpretation mode to Navigation mode temporarily by pressing the ALT key and manipulating the object with MB1. This allows you to stay in Interpretation mode, but still be able to manipulate the object. Note: Use the Compass with Controls to zoom, reposition, or change the vertical scale while still in Edit/Interpret mode. Release the ALT key to return to Edit/Interpret mode.

By default on Linux systems, the ALT key is used by the windowing system to move windows.

To reclaim the ALT key for Landmark applications, you can do the following:

    Gnome

If you are using Gnome, go to System>Preferences>Windows and change the settings to use the "windows logo" key.

    KDE

If you are using KDE, right click in the top left corner of any window and select "Configure Window Behavior". Then go to “Actions” and in the bottom right corner, switch from Alt to Meta.

You MUST reboot your machine before this change takes effect.

    DecisionSpace® Error Reporting

When DecisionSpace® Suite software is launched, a directory is identified to hold a log file containing runtime messages. The directory location is determined by the LGC_DATA_HOME environment variable. If LGC_DATA_HOME is set, console output is written to:

    [LGC_DATA_HOME]/Landmark/DecisionSpace/logs.

If LGC_DATA_HOME is not set, console output is written to a default location for the specific platform.

    • On Windows, the default location is %USERPROFILE%\Landmark\DecisionSpace\log and the name of the log file containing runtime messages is “DecisionSpace5000.8.3-N.log”, where N is a number from 0 to 9.

  • DecisionSpace® Suite Version 5000.8.3.0 Installation Guide

    5000.8.3.0 Installation Guide Page 58 of 65 August 2013

    • On Linux, the default location is ${HOME}/run and the name of the log file containing runtime messages is “DecisionSpace5000.8.3-N.err”, where N is a number from 0 to 9.

To avoid accumulating too many log files, the number of files is limited to 10. (Hence the use of the digits 0 to 9 in the log file name). A new log file is created each time you start a new session with the increment number increasing by one each time up to 9 and then repeating at 0 by overwriting the existing file.

The application uses the Java Logger to generate output to the log file. The file that controls the level of diagnostic output is logging.properties, located in your DecisionSpace installation directory.

To Increase the Level of DecisionSpace® Suite Error Reporting

You may want to change the level of error reporting output to the log file for diagnostic purposes. To do this, you will edit the logging.properties file located in your installation directory. Be aware that increasing the number of diagnostic messages output to the log file can substantially reduce the performance of the desktop, so be sure to restore the logging.properties file to its original level after you are finished debugging.

To increase the diagnostic level when running the DecisionSpace® Suite software:

    1. Copy the logging.properties file from the top level of your installation directory to a location of your choice.

    2. Now, open this logging.properties file in a text editor.

    3. Find the Default Global Logging Level line. The default line to change is:

    #

    # Default Global Logging Level

    #

    .level= CONFIG

    Change it to:

    #

    # Default Global Logging Level

    #

    com.lgc.level= FINEST

    Save the edited file.

  • DecisionSpace® Suite Version 5000.8.3.0 Installation Guide

    5000.8.3.0 Installation Guide Page 59 of 65 August 2013

Set the environment variable, DSDESKTOP_LOGGING_PROPERTIES_FILE to the full path to your edited logging.properties file. For example:

    set DSDESKTOP_LOGGING_PROPERTIES_FILE=C:\temp\my_logging.properties (windows)

    export DSDESKTOP_LOGGING_PROPERTIES_FILE=/disk1/temp/my_logging.properties (Linux)

Now, whenever you run the software, more detailed diagnostic messages are generated.

Remember: When you are not trying to diagnose a problem, do not leave this diagnostic setting set to FINEST. This setting substantially decreases performance.

To return the diagnostic level to normal usage, unset the environment variable:

    set DSDESKTOP_LOGGING_PROPERTIES_FILE=

    unset DSDESKTOP_LOGGING_PROPERTIES_FILE

This logging.properties file is a standard Java Logging properties file. More information on the logging levels and granularity can be found by examining the logging.properties file distributed with the Java JRE in your DecisionSpace® install image:

    /logging.properties

and at the Oracle web site.

Appendix: Environment VariablesThe following tables describe environment variables used in DecisionSpace® Suite software. However, refer to a specific module documentation for more information.

    Variable Description Value

ARCGISHOME Sets the home directory for the ArcGIS Engine Runtime

    setenv ARCGISHOME /home/arcgis_engine

    DSDESKTOP_LOGGING_PROPERTIES_FILE

Set the environment variable to the full path to your edited logging.properties file.

    set DSDESKTOP_LOGGING_PROPERTIES_FILE=C:\temp\my_logging.propertiesor,export DSDESKTOP_LOGGING_PROPERTIES_FILE=/disk1/temp/my_logging.properties

DSDESKTOP_MEMORY You can override the default maximum Java heap value.

In C - Shell; use setenv

    In Bash; use export

This environment variable can be set in either .lgclogin or in a terminal window prior to launch.

To verify the amount of memory being allocated to the application, search the log files in (~/run) for"-Xmx". The value following "-Xmx is the maximum amount of memory the application is allowed to use. Note: The software only uses the amount of memory needed. For more information see *Memory Considerations on page 11.

DSD_PLOT_CGM_DIR You must provide a directory path within the installation folder for the application.

Set the variable to an existing directory or folder, which you create.

DSD_CUBE_VIEW_WELL_LIMIT Sets a limit on the number of wells that display in the Cube view.

The default limit is 5000, but you may enter an integer for this environment variable to override this value.

ERR_LEVEL See detailed information below this table.

LGC_DSDESKTOP_AUTOSAVE You can turn off auto save, however, we do not recommend this action.

    Set to 0 or false.

    LGC_GIS_USE_ALTERNATE_LINUX_WMS

For GIS, use this as an alternate way to access the WMS map services on Linux.

If this is set in the environment (to anything, no specific setting required,) then an alternate implementation will be used to access WMS map services. This is only recommended if using the 10.0 version of the ESRI ArcGIS Runtime Engine.

LGC_LICENSE_REJECT For more information see Setting the LGC_LICENSE_REJECT environment variable on page 51

LGC_NUM_RMI_SERVERS This setting controls the number of RMI image servers used by the GIS subsystem.

By default, the number of servers started will be equal to the number of cores, with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6.This may be overridden by setting this environment variable, which may have any value between 1 and 24.

This default was chosen as the most reasonable trade-off between system resource consumption and performance gains – it is rare that someone would have more than 6 elements in a view, and, because of the coarseness of the concurrency, you should have at least three available so that one or two long running jobs do not block shorter ones.On the other hand, on Linux especially, each RMI server process consumes a significant amount of memory (app. 1.2GB,) so you should not start too many of them. CPU usage does not seem to be as critical a factor. You can certainly safely start more than the default on Windows, but be careful about increasing it much on Linux.

LGC_PLOTCAP_FILE Points to the location of the plotcap file.

    The default location is $OWHOME/hardcopy.

LGC_SEGYNDX_DATA This environmental variable makes a special interface appear in the SEG Y Analyzer that lets you create SEG Y index files when you scan files in the Analyzer.

After you type in the environmental value, follow it with the path to the directory where you want your index files to reside.

LGC_TILES_MAX Forty is the default number of files the QuickView feature allows you to work with before opening the Tile Layout Setting dialog box. This dialog box allows you to choose the number of files for a data type to display as tabs in QuickView. LGC_TILES_MAX allows you to increase or decrease the default number of files.

Set maximum number of files to work with prior to opening the Tile Layout Setting dialog box.

OW_TNS_FILTER_FILE To ensure that the DecisionSpace Suite only sees the Oracle SIDs from the OpenWorks software database instances, create a text file (for example ”tnsfilter.txt”) with the same format as ”tnsnames.ora”, listing only those SIDs that you want the DecisionSpace Suite to access and then add the OW_TNS_FILTER_FILE variable in lgcenv.cf file and assign it the path to the file containing the list of SIDs.

In Linux, the environment variable is added to "lgcenv.cf." The following command adds the variable in $OWHOME/conf/lgcenv.cf :

    OW_TNS_FILTER_FILE /Landmark/DecisionSpace/tnsfilter.txt

Note: The "tnsfilter.txt" is replaced by the actual file name.

PV_COR_MAXNEWWELL Correlation views cloned from a Section view only display 20 wells. If you open a Correlation view from a Section and are displaying a large number of wells (for example 100 wells), the Correlation view displays only 20 wells, randomly selected from the well list. The environment variable PV_COR_MAXNEWWELL lets you increase the number to as many as you desire.

Set to the maximum number of wells you wish to have displayed in a new correlation tab.
