Charles Mankamyer Senior Vice President / General Agents

Why do Medicare Advantage (MA) members leave Medicare Advantage? Maybe when they ask, “What’s in it for me?”, they don’t get the response they want. Unfortunately, in the past three years, hundreds of thousands of Seniors across the United States didn’t even have the chance to ask that question. They were involuntarily disenrolled by insurers that did not renew their annual contracts with Medicare and withdrew from the market. Or their insurer dropped the member’s plan, the member wasn’t offered other plans, or the plans offered were not the right fit.

For members choosing to withdraw from Medicare Advantage, other reasons may also apply:

y Most Medicare Advantage plans are similar to HMOs or PPOs, and Seniors generally are limited in their choice of doctors, hospitals, and nursing facilities.

y Their doctor may leave the MA plan or be dropped by the plan.

y Senior moves out of the plan’s area.

y Finding covered medical care, such as emergency or urgent care while traveling, may be difficult, since the member’s access is generally limited to a certain network of doctors and hospitals.

y A claim under the Medicare Advantage plan may not have been handled the way the Senior hoped, or a claim may have been denied, causing the member undue financial hardship.

y The Senior didn't realize the MA plan is not guaranteed renewable, or that he would be responsible for copayments or coinsurance for doctor visits, hospital stays, etc., … charges a Medicare Supplement generally covers.

Whatever the reasons, Medicare Advantage members can opt out of their MA plans starting Jan. 1, 2013, and return to Original Medicare. In addition to a Medicare Supplement, they will likely need a Part D Prescription Drug Plan. As you know, UA and First UA Agents don’t sell Medicare Part D, but your Med-Supp customers can enroll in our plans online. Direct UA customers to www.uamedicarepartd.com and First UA customers to www.firstuamedicarepartd.com, where they can enroll in a Select or Enhanced Part D Prescription Drug Plan.

Make sure your customer knows ‘What’s In It for me'?What’s the most important point to make with Seniors leaving Medicare Advantage? Assure them Original Medicare coupled with a quality Medicare Supplement and a Part D Prescription Drug Plan from UA or First UA can satisfy their health insurance needs for decades to come. Guaranteed renewability is probably the number one feature of Medicare Supplements that can make them a great choice. Freedom to choose doctors and hospitals is probably number two. In addition, make sure prospects know our plans are accepted nationwide by any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. Tell prospects about our Companies’ longstanding A+ (Superior)* Financial Strength rating from A.M. Best Company. And don’t forget our outstanding claims service. Make sure your customer knows ‘What’s In It for Me'?

You successfully worked the Medicare Advantage Annual Enrollment Period

that just ended and were able to provide many new Senior customers with a quality Medicare Supplement from United American or First United American. There are, however, a multitude of Seniors across the country not yet tuned-in to the value of Medicare Supplements. I know you will be just as successful during the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period running Jan. 1, to Feb. 14, 2013.

As 2012 comes to an end, may you and your families be truly blessed this holiday season, and may the coming year bring you success beyond your wildest dreams. Thank you for being part of the UA and First UA family! I look forward to what lies ahead for all of us!

The Medicare Advantage Annual Disenrollment Period starts Jan. 1, and runs to Feb. 14, 2013. It’s time to get READY to boost your q1 production and start the year off RIGHT!!

Top five reasons to sell UA and First UA Medicare Supplements

1. Guaranteed Renewability: Customers cannot be canceled as long as premiums are paid on time … regardless of their health status.

2. Freedom of Choice: Customers can choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare without worry about being ‘in the network’ or ‘out of the network’.

3. Company Stability: UA and First UA have been selling Medicare Supplements since 1966 and 1986 respectively.

4. Company Longevity: Together UA and First UA have more than 70 years of experience selling to Seniors. We know Seniors!

5. Financial Strength: For a total of more than 50 consecutive years, UA and First UA have earned an A+ (Superior)* Financial Strength rating from A.M. Best Company. *Rating as of 6/12

See page 5 in the November issue of Summit for specifics on submitting applications for Medicare Advantage members disenrolling from MA plans.

Quality Benefits and Lower Premium

Medicare Supplement High Deductible Plan F (HDF and F+ for First UA) can be a great match for Medicare Advantage members switching to Original Medicare and purchasing a Medicare Supplement.

• In the past three years, UA’s HDF rates have lowered by approximately 36 percent in most states.

• If your prospect does not anticipate high medical expenses and can cover the annual deductible, a high deductible plan features quality benefits coupled with lower premiums and might be an appropriate option.

• Where approved, UA Agents can offer the Reserve Fund Annuity (RFA) to help the customer pay medical expenses before policy benefits take effect. The RFA, where approved, is also available with Plans A, B, D, G, K, and L.

Who’s your typical life insurance customer? Young newlyweds eager to start their lives together? Financially stable first-time

homeowners? Protective new parents? A lot of scenarios come to mind, but one important group is often missing — Seniors.

Encourage your Senior customers to give a gift of life and love!Source: http://www.ehow.com/how_5555723_make-life-insurance-senior-citizens.html

Seniors need life insurance too!in addition to covering final expenses and providing financial help for a remaining spouse, a life insurance policy with a child or grandchild as beneficiary can serve as a loving, financial legacy … one that may help that child pay off a mortgage or send a grandchild to college.

Here are a few tips to reach this large and important prospect pool:

1. Attend charitable events and other functions where Seniors congregate. Get acquainted with staff at local retirement communities, Senior centers, and organizations that cater to the needs and interests of Seniors.

2. Set up a booth at health fairs. these events often attract Seniors for free blood pressure or cholesterol screening. if you make contacts with younger folks, remember, they have parents and grandparents too!

3. Host a life insurance seminar at your local Senior center. Plan the event for mid-morning and provide coffee, donuts, etc., to make the seminar more inviting. Keep the seminar brief, but provide lots of ‘meet and greet’ time after – that’s when you make connections with potential prospects and start building trusting relationships.

4. Attend sporting events, university functions, and art gallery and restaurant openings. Seniors often have more time and money to attend these types of events. Also reach out to family members who may be in attendance and beneficiaries of the products you offer – they may even play a role in the decision-making process for their parents.

UA has updated and improved the UA Life Rate Calculator (see page 8), which makes selling United American’s Fundamental Life Series I and II even easier! With benefit levels ranging from $1,000 to $500,000, there’s an appropriate policy for almost everyone.
