Staff Profiles

Melody McKee—Bethany Elementary

1. What was your first artistic memory?

My grandmother kept me while my parents worked - from thetime

I was about 4 my “studio” was underneath my grandmother’s

grand piano. She kept all kinds of supplies close by for me to

use. I would cut boxes, cardboard, fabric and burlap (I was

ahead of my time with the burlap!) to make furniture, bou-

quets, hats, etc. She often played her classical pieces while I

worked. I realized long afterwards that it was her way to keep

me busy so she could enjoy some uninterrupted piano prac-

tice. I thought she was just providing me music for a great studio environment!

2. What lead you into art ed? There are two things I am naturally inclined to do: I’m a

maker and a teacher of children. I wanted to pursue something that would allow me cre

tivity and an avenue to teach. I took a class under Dr. Dorothy Pierce at SMU feeling out

the possibility of Art Ed. She encouraged me, enticed me with her awesomeness and cool

ness and mentored me long after I graduated – still love that lady!!!

3. . What is your medium of choice? I have two that tie: Collage, oils

4. Who is your artistic inspiration? Matisse

5. Share a current read? Artistic, Ed, or Fun For fun and health, The Complete Book

of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy

6. What is your top goal for the year? To get my new Art Room fully decorated and

looking good.

Sara Stevens-Slater—Carpenter Middle School

1. What was your first artistic memory? Hanging out with my parents friends at the Edom Art Fair. I was a kid

who ran around thinking I knew everything because my dad had a booth

there. So I would go into the pottery studio and ‘borrow’ clay without

permission. As well as watching the glass blower and raku artists do their

demos.

2. What lead you into art ed? Honestly I never thought I would, it sort of was an accident in

college. (Even though another parent friend who is an elementary art

teacher in Austin would take me to her workshops in the summer and I

thought she had the coolest job ever.) My credits for photography didn’t

transfer so Art Ed was next best thing.

3. What is your medium of choice?

Used to be photography now ceramics, but I love to dable in everything. Current obsession glass

fusing at home and fibers! Thank Becca for that one.

4. Who is your artistic inspiration?

That is a tough one, I used to be obsessed with Dali, Ansel Adams and in college Kiki

Smith. Now I love following and getting inspiration from fellow art teachers.

5. Share a current read? Artistic, Ed, or Fun.

How to Teach like a Pirate

6. What is your top goal for the year?

To figure out a better way to handle sketchbooks with middle school aged students.

It constantly gives me headaches. Advice anyone?

Tiffany Alvarez-Thurman –PSHS

1. What was your first artistic memory

Drawing a boat, meticulously and painstakingly, for an art contest in 2nd grade and losing to

some abstract colored butterfly. Not happy.

2. What lead you into art ed?

I decided after spending three years in television news consulting that I needed to do something

more fulfilling so decided to pursue a Master’s in Education. My dad was an artist and my mom a

teacher, so I combined their two loves into my own.

3. What is your medium of choice? Photography and watercolor.

4. Who is your artistic inspiration? I’m an art history teacher…too many to name!

5. Share a current read? Artistic, Ed, or Fun.

6. What is your top goal for the year? Have a 100% pass rate on the AP Art History exam.

On Thursday, December 11th, the Clark Fine Arts Department held its Fine Arts Showcase at Christ United Methodist Church. Student art work was displayed throughout the lobby, and the night was filled with music performed by the choir, or-chestra, and band. Students from Speech and Theatre emceed the evening introducing performers and participants, and sharing student accomplishments achieved this year. It was a wonderful night celebrating the end of a semester worth of hard work by all participants.
