By now, most o the 310 GCV LilyCollections have been planted andmulched or the winter. I your soil has

not rozen hard, there is still time to separatebaby bulbs (clones) rom the mother bulb orto divide large clumps. Loamy, rich soil andwater will encourage root growth. Mulchwell to prevent uture reezing. Remember towork in some shale or sharp gravel to determoles and voles in your raised bed.

Many o the visitors to the PetersburgGarden Club show were taking noteson particular specimens. Catalogs wererequested or orders. Tere were so manyspectacular blooms rom which to choose.

I there were an award or the mostvarieties in an inter club collection, theCharlottesville Garden Club would havewon it, with twelve entries. We had to adda table or their display. For reasons o spacelimitations, each inter club collection will belimited to eight varieties in the uture.

Lily enthusiasts are also noting thehybridizing o the darker colored lilies. Teforal market is dictated by the trends inthe realm o the decorative arts. It will bechallenging and interesting to see how ourGCV arrangers incorporate these newervarieties in the artistic section o the show.Te contemporary designs will be antasticor showcasing these color combinations.

On November 17, the lily chairmenand guests were invited to a back-to-basics workshop. Helpul inormation waspresented on growing, sowing and arranginglilies. Attendees were encouraged to maintaina loose-lea notebook or color correctphotographs o the GCV lily collections andpertinent handouts. Hands-on judging ospecimens, and practice in lling out entrycards were ollowed by a boxed luncheon.

Te Garden Club o Fairax is planning

our next show June 22 and 23, 2011. Teschedule Green Spaces in Busy Placeswill havea pleasing blend o arrangements depictingthe rich history o Fairax County and itslovely parks and gardens.
