Urgent Need For Repairs

We are getting closer to obtaining the much needed funds to cover expenses of urgent repairs! These urgent items roughly total $20,000.

As indicated in the previous bulletin, a parish family generously committed to matching all raised funds up to $10,000. At this time approximately $6,300 in donations have been received, with the matching funds we are at 64% of our goal. Your bighearted giving and support in helping St. Patrick meeting this goal is greatly appreciated.

There will be no Ladies Scripture meeting in December.

The December 19th meeting has been cancelled. We will resume once again on January 16th after the 9:00 AM Mass.


Pflaum Gospel Weekly Reflection and Questions for

next week: Third Sunday of Advent

Life Question: What are ways you have made the

world a better place?

Gospel Question: What was John the Baptist waiting

for?

In next Sunday’s Gospel John the Baptist raises a

question we often ask: Who is Jesus? Is he the long-

awaited Messiah? Jesus sends John a message—the

deaf hear, the blind see, lame people leap, lepers are

healed, the dead are raised, and Jesus preaches to

the poor. Jesus’ message tells us not only who he is

but also who we, his followers, are. Jesus and his

followers are people who heal, who give life to

others, who reach out especially to the poor. Working

for justice for poor people is one of the most

important ways we can follow the Gospel. To follow

Jesus is not to get ahead with God for one’s self. To

follow Jesus is to gather people together and to take

special care of those who have a hard time helping

themselves and to people who need strength not to

be scared. This is the spirit of Jesus we celebrate on

Christmas.

God has promised will come after him. In response,

Jesus recounts some of his miracles, all of which

were prophesied by Isaiah. Jesus affirms that John is

Everyday Stewardship—Jesus Is Headed Your Way

One day, we heard the news that a possible tornado was heading our way. We live off of a highway, and it was traveling

along that very road. My wife and kids huddled in the downstairs bathroom. Not many tornadoes surface in North Carolina,

so our children were particularly worried because it was something they had never contemplated happening before. The tor-

nado never did come into our neighborhood, but it did cause one of our sons to express that he needed to go to Confession as

soon as possible. He hadn’t done anything too over the top sinful, but coming face-to-face with a tornado had caused him to

have some second thoughts about his preparedness for meeting God. Hopefully, a tornado doesn’t make a path through your

city or town this Advent.

Sometimes, reminders of our mortality find their way into life. The passing of a loved one, a car accident, or a health scare

can all cause us to reflect on where we are in our relationship with God. Without those moments, we can find ourselves living

daily without a mindfulness of where God is in our life and if our actions are pleasing to Him … or if they drag us further

away into the world.

Advent is the time to take inventory of where we are with God. How are we living as good stewards and mature disciples?

What do I need to make amends for in the healing power of the sacrament of Penance? A tornado may not be coming, but

Jesus will be returning someday. Hopefully, you will run outside of your home to meet him, and he won’t find you huddled

up afraid in your bathroom.

As we begin our Advent journey in preparation for the celebration of Christ’s

birth and in anticipation of his coming again in glory, we are reminded of our

need to be prepared. This short season of Advent can be a mini-pilgrimage for us

who find ourselves living in a world that is often counter-productive to developing a

focused and meaningful relationship with God. Being a Christian and standing firm in our faith requires a strength that can

only come from prayer. These four short weeks can help us look back to what God

has done in history, to what God continues to do in our lives today, and to

what God promises for the future. May we use this Advent time wisely, and find our

calling to holiness.

Praying with Jesus in the Womb. We know his life on this earth began in the womb, at the moment of his conception. And, so we know that the first part of his journey among us - the first part of the Word of God taking flesh and dwelling among us - was nine months in his mother's womb. But, we rarely reflect on this part of the presence of “God with us.” From the moment that - “by the power of the Holy Spirit” - the life of Jesus began in Mary's womb, Jesus became one with us. He didn't magically appear as an adult. He began his life journey as a tiny bundle of cells. We can imagine those cells multiplying so quickly, day by day and week by week - silently, imperceptibly. But, this human life was already “God, made one of us.” No one could imagine God could be human. And, now we can imagine our God coming among us in this developing, new life - so small, so dependent, so powerless. We can feel the gratitude welling up within us as we contemplate the unseen journey of Jesus being “knit” in his mother's womb (Psalm 139). Though Son of God, he is becoming Son of Mary. We can imagine that already, in this very fine development, he is taking on her flesh, her cells, her shape, her looks, her heart. It is so slow, and yet, so planned. It is a journey which none of us can remember, but which every one of us took, to become who we are. And, now we contemplate that profound solidarity with us which our Savior began - even in the womb, for us. Already, this sense we have of his entry into our experience helps us remember that he shared our human journey and we never need to feel alone, on any part of our journey. He became one of us by taking on the very way we enter this world. This transition to a life born into this world, and the continuing journey of a child, a young person, and finally as an adult, is one Jesus made, for us. And, in these moments, as we contemplate this mystery and its meaning for us, we grow in gratitude for that first coming and we grow in our longing for our relationship with Jesus to develop in intimacy and love. On Sunday, December 8th from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM, our parish will participate in the National Night of Prayer For Life. The purpose is to unite our prayers with Catholics throughout the country in an effort to help bring back the world to Christ and bring about an end to abortion. The hours are chosen to coincide with Our Lady of Guadalupe’s appearance to Juan Diego.

The hour may seem late, but holds a great importance. Please consider joining Catholics across our great nation as we unite in prayer.
